Windows XP 64-bit?

Ok, I built this very awesome computer. For some reason, I decided to put XP 64-bit Pro on it as the OS. All of my games work exquisitely and they're really pretty. Unfortunately, my Zune software doesn't work with it. And iTunes wouldn't install either, so I didn't buy an iPod. Is there an mp3 player that will work with XP 64-bit Pro, because I like it, or am I going to have to go to Vista or Windows 7? I don't think it'd affect the gaming much, but it still seems like a pain in the ass to have to change OS's because of this.

Just upgrade. If you know what you're doing, and you have a clean install, there's nothing wrong with Vista. I haven't tried 7 yet, probably gonna upgrade over winter break.

I've had bad, bad experiences with Vista on my laptop. It's now practically dead. :(

64-bit Vista Ultimate is pretty much the best thing ever. I've had no problems with it, and I'm one of those turbo-nerds who hates Vista.

That said, 64-bit Windows 7 Pro is 100% worth it.

Apparently, because I'm a college student, I could buy Windows 7 for my computer for $30, but idk if it will work on my computer. The upgrade advisor won't work on XP 64-bit.

Get a Sansa.

I've put my through hell and it still works(Its been through the washing machine twice), they use Window's media player. They are cheap, and have a bunch of nice features.

What are the benefits of the 64-bit processor over the 32-bit one?

A 64-system allows 64 binary bits (1's and 0's) for memory addresses, as opposed to the standard 32-bit, meaning it can use 2x10^32 times as much RAM. 32-bit systems max out at 4 GB, 64-bit maxes at about 17 billion GB.

IIRC: 3 GHz of 64-bit processor, 6 GB of RAM, 500 GB of hard drive space, NVIDIA 9800GT video card (so I think it has DirectX 9). In theory, I *think* it should work.

Not really a matter of theory

Unless it's a prebuilt machine that, for whatever reason, has weird hardware modifications that does these things (I only dabble with computers... I don't actually know why it changes up) then you should be able to just fine.

Ah. 4 GB is a simple thing these days whereas 17 billion GB should be plenty for the foreseeable future. That sounds excellent

64-bit systems are horribly incompatible in my experience.

As to upgrading to Windows 7, you would have to upgrade to Vista first. XP can't upgrade to 7.

The hardware can utilize 64-bits for memory addresses, but the software, in many cases, is lagging behind. The concrete benefits of a 64-bit OS aren't nearly what they will eventually be because you have to run almost everything as a 32-bit machine anyway. It's exciting stuff, conceptually. Unfortunately, speaking as one who is using a 64-bit computer, the current reality doesn't live up to the hype.

They are probably waiting for me to switch over. After that all software will be 64-bit.

Formatting is better anyway imo. Lots of weird stuff can happen if you don't. Just get W7 on its own, backup anything you want to save, and do a fresh install

I did the $19 ACM subscription right when they added Windows 7. Since then, the service was abused (by people like me) so badly they've removed W7. But hey, I got it while the getting was good ^^

FUCK.

I used Lansdallius' link to order a copy of 7 32-bit Professional at the discount price. I ordered the 32-bit version because my computer is currenlty running Vista Ultimate 32-bit.

But looking through my control panels, I found this little fun fact: "64-bit capable Yes"

If I had seen that before, I would have ordered the 64-bit version. Any thoughts on whether I can change my order?

Is there a customer service phone # or email address? That might be used to change the order.

They're selling Windows 7 Home Premium for CAN$225 here in Quebec City.

Too much for me. I would have paid $150 max (taxes included).
