My next paper is going to be a comparison of a figure of both legend and history. Specifically, it compares the legendary accounts to the historical accounts.

I was hoping to do it over High King Niall, but it is very hard to get any solid historical information on him. I have found the full books usually referenced, but looking over the data there just simply isn't enough to write a paper. It's amazing that such a great figure doesn't has more specific literature over him.

So, are there any suggestion as to where I might look?

Or are there any suggestions on another historical and legendary figure, preferably one with good amounts of information? I was thinking perhaps Charlemagne would be a good one.

Charlemagne and King Arthur are definitely your best bets.

Richard the Lion Heart is actually harder than Niall. I've visited his grave though. NH's other suggestions also look good.

What exactly is the topic of your paper? You should find a lot of data around Niall (rather than about him) by looking at accounts of the High Kings, Irish Legend and most importantly documents about Saint Patrick. Aside from the Annals of the Four Masters, you're not going to find much in the way of a documentary about Niall's lifetime. You should be able to write a lot about the impact Niall's reign had on Ireland and lots of retrospective stuff.

The problem is actually finding good historical texts on him.

Class is about to start. We'll see what the instructor thinks.

She's fine with me still doing it over Niall if I can find enough points to compare.

Nag: The type of essay is comparing and contrasting two accounts or two versions of the same thing. Hence, I chose to compare the historical figure of Niall to the legendary figure of Niall.

I thought of another good topic: the medieval Teutonic Order as compared to the modern Teutonic Order. ^^

Ooo, Davie Crockett is a good one. People generally don't think of the 19th century as legendary but there was a lot of mythologizing around American frontier personalities because of the hearsay nature of communications on the frontier stemming from the low population density.

Sed: Aren't the medieval Teutonic Order and the modern order both largely historical/factualized?

Yes. That's why I'd be comparing medieval to modern. The essay doesn't need to be over history and legend, just two versions of the same thing.

Problem. Need topic with good pieces of literature.

The history/legend thing is a great idea, IF one can find a solid piece of literature for each side.

The paper is a rhetorical analysis. I can't just compare say the Soviet Union to Russia. I would need an article someone wrote on their opinion of the USSR, and a current article of opinion of Russia. If I wanted to analyze a political figure, say Putin, I would need an article supporting him and an article against him.

So yeah, this just got more complex. The rough draft is due yesterday. I need it done by tomorrow for workshop. Argh! If I could just find one good historical biography over Charlemagne and one good compendium of legends over him.

How about someone like Stalin? I believe there's a certain amount of legend or mythology surrounding a historical figure of his stature, and there's surely a lot of pro-Stalin propaganda out there. Furthermore, enough time has passed that the actual facts about his life should have come to light long ago. It wouldn't be my first choice, but it seems like it would be an option which there is enough literature about out there that you could piece something together rather quickly. Then again, maybe I've just misunderstood the assignment.

Also, don't judge my grammar. I feel like there were a lot of mistakes but, being really sleep deprived and riding the beginning of a caffeine crash, I can't actually proofread anything. Everything's spinning and static-y. I really need to sleep. But first I need to wait for that Red Bull to work its way out of my system. I'm glad I didn't start crashing during the exam. Apparently I cut it kinda close.
