Wargaming is amazingly fun. Couple that with an undying interest in ships of sail, and we get naval wargaming. I've searched on and off for naval wargames and naval wargaming models/miniatures. Can't find anything, or at least anything current. Help? |

Not working. I was thinking more along the lines of model ships on a mat, moving with a ruler/tape measurer, measuring range, rolling dice to determine hits, calculating damage, etc. The nerd stuff. Like a Warhammer game but with ships. |

Something unrelated to wargaming, but has to do with navies and ships. Where could I find a complete, or as near complete as possible, list of ship classes? I keep getting pages of crap from something called Galaxy Online. I can't find the same kinds of lists for both aircraft or weaponry. I hate search engines. Also looking for something along the lines of a warship "designer". I'd like to be able to create my own destroyer, cruiser, battleship, etc, but still have realistic specs. Maybe a vague blueprint. |

Are you focusing on sail ships or modern ships? |

I need modern ships for here, so I can create my navies and such. I'd perfer a generator so I can have original ships, but a list would be just as nice. While I don't need one for sailing ships right now, I love ships of sail enough that'd it be equally appreciated. I get the feeling I'm asking for the impossible since I've searched on and off for years. ... A free online copy of every edition of Jane's All the World's Fighting Ships would be nice as well... Damn my modern brain, corrupted by the convenience of everything being simple, quick, easy, and understandable! :furious: :furious: :furious: :furious: |

Oh hell, there are several versions of the type of ship-to-ship game you are looking for - I've seen them in every gaming store I've gone into - of course they are all for the age of sail. I've got a bunch of packs for one of them around here somewhere. |

Bump. Still haven't found anything. Still researching on and off. What do you mean? I haven't seen anything, unless you're referring to those Wizkids Pirates things. I've played them, and actually still do with my cousin and uncle. We build massive, 500 point fleets (Usually amounts to 40-50 ships plus crew) and spend days fighting it out. One of our games took us 8 days. These are oversized display versions of the ships: Spoiler: click to toggle My problem with that game is, it's plastic pieces, easily breakable with printed art on it, rather than actual wood crafted and hand painted stuff. The game is incredibly steampunk, with cranes, submarines, spike traps, etc, set in the 1700s timeframe. It's also very mythical, there's ways to create currents and fog, things that make a ship eternal so it can't sink. There's even a thing called Neptune's Trident, which essentially creates a massive tidal wave that is capable of destroying half a fleet, and an Altar of Loa, which lets you control an opposing ship with no logical explaination. What I'd like, is something that looks more like this: Spoiler: click to toggle No special abilities and such, just cool looking miniatures with a tape measurer in a legitimate mock battle in which you can recreate battles like Trafalgar. |

Then get to work! It takes me about 2 years to build a good wooden ship model (then again, I usually onlwork on it on Sundays), so I guess in about 10 years you could have enough for a nice naval battle! This way you can build all types of classes. |

you build your model from scratch from a block of wood, or from a kit? Edited by Tristan da Cunha, Oct 4 2009, 09:43 PM.

I've done both, but never from a block of wood. I always plank up my hulls. Brass fittings I always buy, but with good plans you don't need a kit, once you have built a few kits it becomes very easy. Time consuming as all hell, but pretty easy. |
