I stocked up on about 4 cartons before the ban went in.

Hail, the black market.

Nice summary from wikipedia.

Quote:

The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, H.R. 1256 is a United States federal law that gives the Food and Drug Administration the power to regulate the tobacco industry.

The bill bans flavored cigarettes, including cloves, cinnamon, candy, and fruit flavors, with a special exception for menthol cigarettes. Because the exception helps the largest maker of menthols, Phillip Morris, and eliminates potential competition, the bill has been nicknamed the Marlboro Monopoly act of 2009.[5] Philip Morris strongly supports FDA regulation.[6][7]

The bill was largely shaped by Philip Morris (now called Altria), which sells more cigarettes than nearly every other American tobacco company combined.

"It is a dream come true for Philip Morris," Michael Siegel, a professor at the Boston University School of Public Health, told me. "First, they make it look like they are a reformed company which really cares about reducing the toll of cigarettes and protecting the public's health; and second, they protect their domination of the market and make it impossible for potentially competitive products to enter the market." Other tobacco companies have taken to calling the bill the "Marlboro Monopoly Act of 2009."

Because they have a "flavor". Of course, cloves account for less than 1% of sales in the USA, compared to menthol, the cigarette of the black community, which remain untouched and have a 27% market share.

It is a stupid law meant to pander to the liberal core of the Democratic Party, while not doing much of anything except to the few souls who actually enjoyed clove cigarettes. This is the same core which would love to legalize marijuana, in a contradiction that has never been adequately explained or understood by myself.

This bill is politics and corporate lobbying at its very essence. It is disgusting.

Be sure to find out if the company you are ordering from reports your purchases to the state Internal Revenue Service. If they do, you may find yourself with a big tax bill at the end of the year!

Doesn't it suck to be part of a demonized minority?

If you need flavored tobacco I suggest switching over to Shisha. Of course the only problem is that you need a hookah, and its kind of stationary. But its a good replacement.

You know it wasn't until they thought about banning in door smoking at restaurants that I realized my town has like two hookah bars. The law put them into a good pickle, so as a compromise they moved the hookahs outdoors.

I'm sure you can get cloves flavored shisha. Hell, if you can get pipe tobacco flavored shisha I'm pretty sure you can find anything.

And now I want to smoke...

I spent all last night resisting the urge to smoke some truly premium weed. Now I want to smoke the most delicious type of regular cigarette there is.

....

Actually I can see why they got banned. Methol sucks ass, would not tempt me in the slightest. The mere mention of cloves has got the addiction centre of my brain blazing and I've only smoked them once. Those are tasty, tasty cigarettes.

The cartons came in today! Really cheap, as well - roughly $2 a pack. Djarum went for about $10 a pack before. I should have done this ages ago.

Thank you government, for showing me, indirectly, the path!
