It's more than just a symbol of fascism. It represents strength through unity. It is seen in a wide range of empires, countries, and in a variety of uses. It is a beautiful symbol. The Romans even had actual fasces(es) which were carried around by the consuls. I see it as a symbol of Western civilization, today being destroyed by internal political conflict and the powerful enemies of Islamism and liberalism. It is only when we unite that we will be strong enough to resist. I see myself as nothing more than a lictor, in this regard. Edited by Union, Aug 25 2009, 07:20 PM.

Looking good. Very lictor-like. I might someday get this picture tattooed on my back. (Everything including foreground and background) Posted Image |

Huesca, you know that me of all people would be aware of Roman symbology. I actually agree with all the things you just said. That changes nothing about the advice I gave you above. |

You will live to regret getting that tattoo. Edit: Also, we're seriously within spitting distance. Edited by Quaon, Aug 25 2009, 07:21 PM.

I do not think so. It is a timeless symbol. Why do you think so, may I ask? |

Are you saying that about the particular tattoo, or about tattoos in general? |

Any symbol with a predominantly political meaning's utility is contingent on the user of the symbol's continued identification with that political movement. Though, I also would say the same about large tattoos in general, as RD suggested. |

I did give the matter a great deal of thought, of course. I do not see it as a political tattoo, but a philosophical one. Even if I do grow beyond my current philosophical inclinations, I realize the tremendous impact this philosophy has had on my upbringing, and my life in general. It was not a decision I took lightly, and this will probably be my only tattoo. |

I think its as good a tattoo as any, and I am sympathetic to Huesca's argument behind the tattoo. But I do not think that I would want to get a tattoo at all, both because I don't want to permanently mar my skin, and because I don't think that kind of image would contrast as well against my darker skin. |

In honesty, I think mainstream society sees the swastika as more a symbol of Fascism than the fasces. Maybe its just me, but I have a feeling you'll have to actually tell more people what the hell it is over having to worry about what they think of your political and philosophical inclinations. That said, the tattoo as an piece of artistic expression looks well done although I still believe AA tops the tattoo charts in most original  Edited by NRE, Aug 25 2009, 07:37 PM.

While as I said above, I'm not really interested in tattoos, I have thought about getting swastikas before, but rather as a symbol of cultural heritage, not a political movement. But that would be a very poor idea, I think. |

Yeah although certainly done in good taste and with the best of intentions, I do believe mainstream society would still frown upon such a tattoo and take it in the wrong context which is a shame. I'll get a tattoo one day but of what I have no idea, although it will be strictly in black and white as I personally do not like colored tats. |

I think it's silly. It's a double-headed axe with an extremely fat handle. WTF? Nothin' wrong with that, though. I didn't even know it was a symbol of fascism. Honestly, though, I think the sickle and hammer look way cooler. I've always loved that symbol. If it were I girl I'd tap that. |

While the primary symbol of fascism is the fasces, the fasces is not a uniquely fascist symbol.

I honestly think the swastika gets too much flak. It used to be such a good symbol. Now people are stupid because they think it means Nazi. If I ever get a tattoo, it'll probably be my coat-of-arms (shown in my avatar). |

They are fasces, as Quaon said. The sticks are bundled to demonstrate that weak and worthless men, when united, can be strong and unbreakable. It is based on the symbol of a lictor's power in ancient Rome. Lictors formed the honor guards for important magistrates, so the fasces were a symbol of the Roman Republic. I fucking hate the hammer and sickle. I agree with your other post though that the swastika gets too much flak. That is a cool symbol. |

Push down hard enough on the fasces, and becoming unbreakable becomes your weakness. But then again, an unbreakable will among men inherently becomes its own weakness. |

I didn't know that was related with fascism, but symbols aren't exactly a specialty of mine. I would probably never tat it up; if I did it would be a small one. I just don't find tattoo's appealing. Their are only two tattoos I really could see myself getting, both related to my running career (which isn't too hot right now, so those are probably both gone).
