In the post-dominion world, the Roman Empire had taken notice of the dissolution of the former Telosanti trading empire. One successor state in particular had caught the imperial eye, the Most Serene Republic of Venice. Based in Venice and the Dalmatian Littoral, the crowned republic also held territory in other parts of Europe. Sitting within the areas of the empire's influence, it was natural that the Romans should seek friendly relations with the Venetians. For that reason, the emperor had the imperial chancellor draw up an invitation to the Venetian government, inviting them to negotiations in Constantinople.

A Roman naval escort was prepared to bring the Venetian delegation from Venice to Constantinople. With the Most Serene Republic (i.e. Telosan Europe) at war with the other factions of the former Telosanti trade empire, the Romans took extra caustion to protect their guest. If the delegation was in any way harmed by their enemies while under Roman protection, it would be an unspeakable humiliation. When they arrived in Constantinople, the Venetians were brought before the Emperor Constantine XIII and the Lord Chancellor of the Roman Empire, Prince Thomas Rangabe. |

OOC: I've got some groundwork done on the nation. I actually have a leader now! Hehe... IC: Once in Constantinople, the Venetian delegation was given time to settle, and then taken before their hosts. With the government still in the process of being built, there were few actual positions entitled to the delegates, though they would eventually be members of the government. Most notable of the delegates, was Imperator Drake Reed, the elected head of state of the new Venetian country. Though busy with maintaining a war, the Roman Empire was by far important enough to summon Drake's undivided attention, at least while he was here. "We thank you immensely for your invitation. We're honored to have gained the attention of such a large force, and the Roman Empire at that. The fledgling Venetian nation is open to any and all negotiations." |

The emperor smiled, "Wonderful. Lord Reed, Chancellor Rangabe and I are quite interested in forming relations with Venice. We have noticed that your nation currently has some troubles, but we believe that you have a lot of potential as an independent realm. We would be interested in establishing trade relations and a security pact with Venice." |

"A security pact with the Roman Empire is most only seen in a small nation's dreams, and then rarely. We gladly accept, though we request that the Romans not get involved in our current dispute as it is an internal matter. As for the trade relations, what do you propose? No tariffs on trade? Access to all ports?" |

Lord Rangabe said "We would be happy to have completely free trade between our nations, with access to all ports, and no tariffs. This would be very beneficial to both our nations. Also, freedom of movement of our citizens between our two countries would be beneficial in this regard. "We would be happy to stay out of your current internal dispute. Other than that, however, we can offer total protection of Venice and her possession, in exchange for your military support whenever we deem it necessary against an enemy. We would also like the option to station naval fleets in your ports, in areas where we do not have ports of our own. "Those are basic interests. We would also be interested advancing the status of the Orthodox Church in your country, if you are amenable. If not, that is acceptable, but if you were to agree, then your orthodox bishops would recieve positions in the imperial Estates-General." |

OOC: Orthodox is Colognian or just plain orthodox? Currently, the Celtic church is highly popular, but I think I chose Colognian as the main religion. IC: "We agree to these requests. Your navy would also be welcome in our ports, all of them. As for the church, I can't control my people's religion, but you are most welcome to send religious officials back with us." |

OOC: Orthodox is Orthodox. Why would it be Colognian, which is completely unrelated and has no connection? |

OOC: Religion is sooo confusing here. There needs to be a factbook that clearly defines them somewhere. |

OOC: Honestly, you've confused me at this point. Orthodox is the religion I have been RPing here for 5.5-6 years, and which is the foundation of the Empire, Russia, and other nations at various times. It is Eastern Orthodox, but more like in the Byzantine Empire than in modern times. Colognian is identified with a modernist version of Roman Catholicism. I don't know why you would associate them, which is what confused me.

OOC: Sorry for the OOC tangent. IC: The Emperor said, "We would happy to establish an Orthodox hierarchy in your domains, even if you reasonably cannot force your people to join it. We would not ask you you to. But as long as you do not interfere with its activities, that is acceptable to us. I will have have Lord Rangabe draw up a treaty." Thomas Rangabe took the time then to prepare a treaty, and then offered it to the Venetians for review. ***** ROMAN-VENETIAN TREATY OF AUGUST 15, XXXX Whereas, the contracting parties of the Empire of the Romans ("the Roman Empire") and the Most Serene Republic of Venice ("La Serenissima") desire to establish relationship for the purposes security, mutual economic benefit, and just order, the contracting parties agree to the following terms: 1. The contracting parties will allow citizens of either party to trade freely within their borders. No tariffs will be placed on goods from either contracting party, and access to markets or trade ports will not be hindered in any way between parties. 2. Citizens of the contracting parties will enjoy full freedom of movement between contracting parties, and the passports of either party will be honored at both parties' customs checkpoints. 3. The Roman Empire will entirely guarantee the security of La Serenissima from any aggressor. This does not apply to the current internecine conflict, but shall apply to all future conflicts. 4. La Serenissima agrees to provide the Roman naval forces unfettered access to the ports of Venice and its other territories, allowing the Roman Empire to station forces in these cities. 5. The friends of the Roman Empire shall be considered friends of La Serenissima. The enemies of the Roman Empire shall be considered enemies of La Serenissima. La Serenissima will provide military aid against any enemy the Roman Empire requests. 6. The Roman Empire will provide for the establishment of a hierarchy of the Orthodox Eastern Church in the lands of La Serenissima. La Serenissima, while not obligated to enforce the orthodox religion, will not hinder its activities, and will look upon it positively and not restrict it in any fashion. Signed, in Constantinople, August 15, XXXX Parties: The Roman Empire Constantine XIII Monomachus Emperor and Autocrat of the Romans Thomas Rangabe, Prince of Adrianople, Lord Chancellor of the Roman Empire The Most Serene Republic of Venice Drake Reed, Servant of the People, Imperator of Venice Edited by Rhadamanthus, Aug 15 2009, 10:07 PM.

With the treaty signed, the emperor invited Drake Reed to spend as much time in the City as he liked, and to enjoy its attractions. |
