The Fast Ship to Constantinople

Glasgow, Midnight.

As stormclouds of war threatened the British Isles, the Prime Minister of Scotland, Lord Buchan Douglas, furtively boarded the fastest cutter on the Glasgow dock. He travelled with only one companion, a bodyguard. Each carried at their side only a sword and pistol.

Their highly maneuverable ship flew the diplomatic colors of the Scottish royal banner, and would cover the distance to Constantinople at lightning speed.

The Prime Minister left his son Phillip in charge of the defenses of Edinburgh. The Prime Minister himself needed to champion the cause of his liege the King of Scotland at the court of the Greek empire. He sought to speak to the highest ranking official in Constantinople who would have him, preferably the Emperor. Obviously his authority superceded the resident Scottish ambassador in the City.

Their banner was waved past the Pillars of Hercules and by the end of the week they crossed the Internal Sea and arrived in Constantinople.

OOC: Somebody should diagram the relationships between, at minimum, the Roman Empire, the County of Edessa, France, the Breton separatists, Ireland and Man, Scotland, Wales, Wessex, and any other interested parties that I am forgetting. This might be the most complicated RP in a while (other than the Dominion, which goes without saying).

IC:

"Lord Buchan Douglas is here, Your Majesty," the recently appointed Chancellor, Thomas Rangabe, informed the emperor.

"We shall recieve him," said Emperor Constantine XIII.

Lord Rangabe led Lord Buchan Douglas into the room, where after the intricate formalities, the emperor bid them both sit down. Lord Rangabe then took a brief few minutes to run down the situation in Britain: the movements of Scotland and Wessex, the Celtic League, the situation with France, and the summit which the Count of Edessa, Viscount Fleischmann, and the Duke of Petra were in attendence. When the emperor was finally brought up to speed, Lord Buchan Douglas was invited to speak.

OOC: This is the best I can do. It's ugly as sin. Didn't pretty it up because I think it's only half complete.

Spoiler: click to toggle

[Edit]

Thanks? For that? Really?

....

That's the worst thing I've ever been thanked for.

The Buchan Douglas spoke:

"Lord Basileus, you are aware of the tensions troubling Britain and potentially leading to war, even if all parties seek only peace. I therefore come here to beseech you to recognize the claim of my liege the King of Scotland on the crown of England. The recognition of Roumania of King James' rightful authority in England will enhance the legitimacy of James's crown in the eyes of foreigners. Though I believe our forces are sufficient to secure the King's claim, I seek your commitment for a loan of 2 million thalers at low interest if Scotland ever needs this, met by substantial collateral. I am aware of recent tensions between your court and the French republicans, but additionally I ask for your court's formal recognition of French overlordship in Brittany, as we believe involving French support is key to our effort and may be beneficial to relations between Roumania and the French republic in the long run, which may be conducive to the achievement any of your goals.

"In return Scotland is prepared to lease the 3 English port cities of Liverpool, Portsmouth, and Southampton to the Empire for a period of 20 years, commencing after the satisfactory securement of James' claim to the crown of England, with the right of your agents to collect all duties and tariffs visited upon those ports."

The Chancellor, Lord Rangabe, said, "My lord emperor, these Atlantic ports would be highly useful, especially as a waystation for the ships going to Manitoba."

The mention of the Republic of Manitoba was a reminder of Thomas Rangabe's most recent success. The securing of the republic's allegience, along with his conquest in the Penninsula of Haemus, had secured for him the prestigious position of Chancellor. He was, after the emperor himself, the most important person in the government of the Roman Empire.

The emperor asked, "What about the Irish?"

Rangabe responded, "The Irish prince is meeting with the other Celts, I believe. The Count of Edessa, Viscount Fleischmann, and the Duke of Petra are present there. However, I see no reason why the Irish should prefer Welsh or Wessexian rule to Scottish rule of England. Brittany is a touchier issue, but France's hold on Brittany is rather strong. I sincerely doubt that Ireland has anything to gain there."

The emperor said, "Then it seems that we have much to gain from this Scottish proposal, and little to lose along as we can bring the Irish on board." Turning to Lord Buchan Douglas, he gave his answer, "I find your offer compelling, but I would append two conditions. First, Scotland should win the good will of the Irish, and second, we should able to sway the Irish to our cause prior to annoucing publically our support for Scotland in England and France in Brittany. Is that acceptable."
