The Malagassian Armed Forces are a professional/conscript army. It is relatively small as defence is only a secondary priority and as Malagassia as a UN member can count on an alliance that would outnumber any enemy.
The army is 210,000 strong in ground fighting capability (combat infantry).

They are mainly equipped with assault rifles, and machine guns and can carry grenades and other miscellaneous assault weaponry with them.
Heavier equipment used by the army are 100 Leopard 2A6 heavy tanks; 120 PT-76 light tanks; 350 BRDM-2; 200 M-8; 200 M-3A1; 100 FV-701 Ferret reconnaissance vehicles; 300 M-3A1 half-track armored personnel carriers and hundreds of 'technicals' (open jeeps with a heavy gun, anti-tank gun or light cannon installed). The army possesses also 500 14.5-mm ZPU-4 and 200 37-mm Type 55 air defence guns; 120 76-mm ZIS-3; 120 122-mm and hundreds of 105-mm artillery pieces. The mortar inventory consists of 800 120-mm M-43; 240 82-mm M-43 and hundreds of 81-mm M-29s in addition to thousands of of 89-mm rocket launchers and 106-mm M-40A1 recoilless launchers.
Additionally there's heaps of logistic material present such as trucks, jeeps, ambulances, cranes and others.

The army is relatively well-trained focusing on mountain, coastal, amphibious, jungle, island and urban warfare (types of warfare applicable to Malagassia), their morale is quite good. They're mainly responsible for defensive land operations and ground-based air defense and to protect the nation's institutions from armed opposition.

The other part of the army is called the Malagassian Aeronaval Forces and is some 10,000 men strong.

A 5,000 personnel air component includes combat, transport, and maritime patrol duties. The air force maintains its headquarters at Ivato, near Antananarivo (the Malagassian one) and operates from bases at Antalaha, Antsohiky, Arivoniamamo, Diego Suarez, Fianarantsoa, Fort Dauphin, Majunga, Nosy Be, Tamatave and Tuléar.
The air force component consists of 10 fighter wings with each 100 MiG-21 Fishbed and 40 MiG-17 Fresco aircraft; ten transport squadrons that include 4 An-26 Curl, 2 Yak-40 Codling, 3 BN-2 Defender, 2 C-47 Dakotas, and 2 C212 Aviocar aircraft; and ten helicopter squadrons with 6 Mi-8 Hip transport helicopters. Additionally, the air force possesses 2 Cessna 310, 6 Cessna 337's, 4 PA-23 Aztec utility/communications aircraft and 8 Cessna 172 trainer aircraft.

The 5,000 member Malagassian navy (the other part of the aeronaval forces) mainly concentrates on coastal patrol missions from bases at Diego Suarez, Tamatave, Fort Dauphin, Tuléar, and Majunga. The naval inventory consists of ten Malaika (French type PR48-meter design) patrol boats, ten Toky (French BATRAM design) vessels, ten LCTs (French EDIC design), ten LCAs, and 30 LCVP amphibious craft.

The third part of the army and the elite forces are called the Republican Guard. They are a unit of circa 800 heavily trained commando forces like the SAS. They can perform special operations behind enemy lines, high-risk recon and high-risk target operations. They have different equipment which varies from operation to operation. They are the elite core of the fighting forces and can save the day when defeat seems imminent.

A fourth part is the 75,000-strong paramilitary Gendarmerie. They are only concerned with internal security and are a Military Police force as well as a police force. Their morale is high and they receive slightly better pay and accomodation. Therefore they're considered 'elite' as well.

Malagassia's valuable armed forces can be called upon for UN operations. The constitution allows for 25% of the forces to be deployed for such missions.
