....anywho you know there was a computer game that came with our very first desktop, an ole Packard Bell computer which was of course a chess game (keeping with the topic) but it had an option where you could change the pieces of the game from the standard or classic style we're all familiar with to all sorts of other styles including something along the lines of a fairytale-style board.

If I remember correctly the pawns were something along the lines of Orcs, Rooks were castle towers, knights were well knights on horseback, bishops were wizards, and well the Queens were Queens and the King was a King. It was interesting and how I originally took up the game.

My second PC came with a game called Battle Chess. It's what got me interested in Chess.

Fairy Chess, anyone?
Is this a gay joke?
Surprisingly, no. Standard chess doesn't have enough pieces, (nor are they diverse enough,) to assign one to each of us. However, if someone were to invent a "fairy" variation of chess, it would be possible, and cool as hell.

I'm a big fan of KoL Chess.

Per side there's 15 different pieces - 33 pieces overall. And there's Pawns (members), Monsters (Vets), The Tower (NRE), Legends (General Mods), and two Royal Pieces (Admin).

Spoiler: click to toggle

I'll be a vet soon enough. Not the kind that takes care of animals, though I do love puppies.
