The last soldiers had fought bravely, Jakob was fully aware of this.
But their value was not enough, the imperial tanks had driven out them like rats from their burrows.
There were still fighting, especially near the borders of Etruria, in Marradi or Vernio but it was a few isolated troops.
The Republic of Etruria, which had nothing to do with the Etruria in Po Valley, took refuge in Lucca and the counselor Mauro Rabatti had assumed the post of president of the republic.
Jakob looked at the map and smiled.
Although the Republic had decided to continue fighting its resources were limited and its soldiers folded morally.
An direct advanced on Lucca was not yet possible because Florence was not yet secure and groups of partisans roamed the countryside.
However, the news coming from the Po Valley were reassuring, Lodi and Mantua had accepted the message of the emperor and had joined the empire.
Was a success more limited than it seemed, being merged with Milan Porcu, but it was still a gain for the empire.
However now the problem remained Lucca, Jakob spread a map and began to think of a plan of attack.

Lucca was a beautiful city with the approach of winter.
Its long medieval walls were a marvel with the trees raised their skeletal branches toward the gray winter morning.

Mauro Rabatti was consulting the map on his desk.
For months, the imperial army was standing near the town of Capannori and the towns of Massa and Carrara had joined the cause of the republic Etruscan.

Yet he knew that the war would end quickly.
Months, not more.
Much of northern Italy had fallen into the hands of the empire and were soon surrounded.

Then attacked by both sides, would have fallen without a doubt.

Could not allow it, would never have allowed the end of democracy.
The government of the Popes was obnoxious but at least it was national.
The Grand Duke Christopher was a foreigner and did not believe in democracy, not for sure.

Picked up the phone "I'm the president."
"This is the Admiral the republic," said a voice.
"Or what is left of it," the president thought .
"Orders?" Asked the admiral.
"Put the fleet in the water, attack Pisa".

THE BATTLE OF PISA
Souther Tyrrenian sea, mouth of the Arno

Newly appointed General Lucius Pirgalli not know where to bang his head.
Pisa was his city and had recently fallen into the hands of the Austrian Empire.
The hate that felt for the enemies of his country was burning but the task that the Chancellor of the Republic had given him was too difficult.

The landing was easy, virtually without a fleet, the Empire was unable to put up great resistance.
Unfortunately, the problem was not the coast but the city itself.
The Austro-Hungarian army had placed great defense led by General Jackob Redlinger.
Pirgalli looked at the map and shook his head "It is not practically possible to win," he said at the microphone speaking with the president Rabatti "we can not win".
The barrels of the tanks class Attila, the feared tank of the dual monarchy, sparkled in the sun.
"Attach" said Rabatti "a republic if you do not go forward."
"But if you attack my kids will have their hours counted.
He looked at the map "But I would have an idea Mr. President, I could leave here a division and the rest of my forces to attack Livorno.
Mauro Rabatti thought a bit 'on, was not a bad idea.
Livorno had practically no fleet and Pirgalli could enter the port without resistance.
"Permission granted General," said Rabatti "but must gain a victory

Battle of Livorno

The attack was tremendous.
The fleet of the Republic of Etruria, broke through the defense of the port and began to land troops on the docks.
There the situation became more complicated.
Although surprised, the Austro-Hungarian troops resisted despite losing a good third of the city with the port.

Informed of this, General Redlinger ordered that the troops who controlled Prato and Pistoia corrected to give a hand to the city of Livorno.
As soon as Colonel Bela Khan arrived in town, the tide of battle begins to change.
Etruscan troops were too weak and too few to address the full weight of Attila tanks.
As Admiral Pirgalli had planned, the fate of his men was becoming more like a massacre.
The only other solution was, therefore, the retreat.
After just over two days of fighting the battle of Livorno (and with that of Pisa) was over.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The President of the Republic of Etruria
and
The sovereign people

I failed.
And my failure opens foreign domination on our land.
In the name of God, if you ever forgive me, reminding me at least as brave, I ask to be buried in my Arezzo.

Your Lucio Pirgalli

Lucca, Two weeks after the battle of Livorno

A map hanging on the wall, but otherwise the room seemed to have been swept away by a cyclone.
It was not, however, the kind that cause senseless destruction, but the artillery of Colonel Khun.

Although the Hungarian troops, who fought for the dual monarchy, had tried to avoid hitting monuments and churches, were not entirely successful and so, in addition to civilians, even the artistic heritage of the city was seriously threatened.

The President of the Republic of Etruria, Mauro Rabatti, sat in his chair, in what once was the mayor's office and looked absently at the map.

"Perhaps," he said "I do as Admiral Pirgalli and shoot me."
The gun he had in his pocket, he might end his life when he wanted.
But he did not believe was necessary, his death, perhaps, could not redeem him, but would save the country.
That now, but no longer existed.
He shook our hands the mail sent from Massa Carrara, the city also fell in front of the Austrian Redlinger.
Now the end had come.
His death was brave, but futile.
Picked up the phone "Here Rabatti," he said, "ordered the cease-fire, have won."

Firenze, a Week later

The Archbishop of Florence walked down the aisle of Santa Maria del Fiore.
The city had surrendered to the Germans and the Hungarians without a fight and therefore the damage had been minimal.
The archbishop was in the hands of the golden Grand Duchy.
On the altar, kneeling, was Christian von Hapsburg, who by the will of the Roman emperor Philip IV °, was among a few minutes crowned Grand Duke of Tuscany.

Christian on the other hand, kneeling on the red velvet altar in front did not know what to think.
He accepted the throne of Tuscany to the spirit of adventure, his uncle, Philip, had entrusted him with such certainty that he felt ready.
Now that the crown was to descend on his head, however, did not feel quite certain of what he was doing.
It was still a teenager, early twenties, just finished university, he should rule the people of Tuscany who was known for his reluctance to ungovernability and power.
Good, however, was that he was young and the young people always enjoy.
And was a Habsburg-Lotharingen, which was the ruling house of Tuscany.
He sighed and put his fate in God's hands
Then the coronation ceremony began and Christian, he forgot all thoughts.

In Nome dio Dio e dell'Impero
Sua Maestà Imperiale, Granduca di Toscana, Cristiano I°

People of Tuscany.
Thank you for the honor you have given me, entrusting the task of guiding you as your Grand Duke.
As today, the day of my coronation, is a festive day I start my reign with an act of justice.
I order the immediate release of all political prisoners who fell into our hands during the conquest of this land that was ours by divine right.

Will be issued all members of the Cabinet of the Republic of Etruria, all civil servants who had not sided with the Habsburgs and finally all the soldiers of the republic fell into our hands during the conflict.
Also found that not to be prosecuted unless they swear loyalty to our person and are free to move freely to the Grand Duchy.

NEW STORY - The EXPANTION IN GERMANY

Vienna - Reichstag building

Posted Image

The bad drubbing suffered by Mrs. Fenec had not changed her intention to scale the heights of political power.
That afternoon in the Imperial Diet chaos reigned.
And chaos was a term for a few days after the slip of marriage morganatic crazy on almost every newspaper empire.
From small 'Salzburg Fenster', the great "Der Standard", Budapester Zeitung in Austria to Hungary or the Tyrrhenian Sea in Tuscany, all newspapers had stormed Herr Petofi for that story.
Over all, however, Mrs. Fenech, was distressed for her role in the affair.
But now Petofi pulled out of a hat a new opportunity: the empire expands into the German area.
The proposal was to take the Sudetenland in the south, and Bavaria.
Fenec was very happy with this possibility.
Bavaria was willing to enter the empire with a little 'diplomacy for the Sudeten should have been using force but the fate of these areas its was sealed.
Petofi was her least the opportunity to participate in the diplomatic mission to Bayern Munich.
However, the situation was tense.
Delegates Erbe Partei not want this new expansion, while a large part of the Hungarians, in the ranks of the FDP, criticized Petofi for what they called "Germanization Frenzy", which would reduce the number of Hungariansin the Empire.
While you are thinking about these things, she noted absently some passages of Defence Minister Rudolf von Reichenau, who member of Erbe Partei, was accusing Petofi to be an imperialist.
"Our Empire", Reichenau was saying "is not based on the expansion, nor the war."
A round of applause from the Green Left and the Social Democrats.
Fenec looked in the direction of Petofi, was embarrassed.
Could not be him to lead the FDP, for now I would have exploited to reach the top, then you would have thought to take its place at the right time.
"The country needs stability and peace, centered in Vienna with the proposals of our esteemed colleague?"
More applause.
Richenau seemed inspired and continued, "We have always favored peace, even at the time of the Dominion, our empire remained neutral promoting peace and the economy," he paused.
It was then that Fenec spoke "Sir," the woman said "she is an excellent politician, his administration's defense was superb," made of sheets in equal balance, reduced costs, new equipment ... But she now tells us that we are a peaceful empire.
Right, we are, and in fact we do not need to move a single soldier for Bavaria from ours.
Monaco already clamoring to get into this great Reich, the Bavarians are praying to be received as brothers, and subjects of Philip II.
Not a single soldier to die, not a single house will be destroyed.
You can say the same, "she smiled," the conquest of Tuscany? "

Vienna - Reichstag

"In the name of God," Boka was watching the voting results "but this is crazy."
Heider sat beside him, though he had to fill the seat of Minister of Foreign Affairs.
"Janos has gone," he said "I think there is little to do."
Boka looked again the results "Incredible," he murmured.
Von Reichenau climbed the steps that separated the benches of Ministers, the Prime Minister that "I seem to dream," said looking at the map of the vote "all Austrians, no Hungarian.
"That means," said Boka "the end of government."
Heider said laconically, "and that of the FDP.
Already, there was the FDP, what would happen now that the two halves of the second party of the empire there was more dialogue?
"The guard has already decided Magyar something?" Asked Reichenau.
"Not that I know, George?" Asked Boka.
"No, no," said Heider "Petofi has not yet made comments but it is obvious that the FDP does not exist any more after this vote."
"The emperor can do something?" Asked Reichenau.
"No," said Boka "the imperial powers are limited, could not block a procedure of the diet."
"So there is nothing to do?" Reichenau could not believe what was happening.
"For now no," Boka hoping for a change in the vote, but the explanations of vote gave the government under ten points, in practice the death of the coalition.
Fifteen minutes passed, while the delegates of the Reichstag voted.
Then came the official announcement of the Reichstag speacher "The Reichstag has decided, the people of the empire, through its elected delegates freely expressed."
Boka ran his hand over his face, Heider fell in the government benches.
Reichenau looked at the screen again indicating the vote.
The percentage was lower by about a point, but it was evidence that the government was under.
New elections and the uncertainty of what would happen to the FDP.

Passua - Bayern/Austria borders
Posted Image

The city was located directly on the border.
The border was easy to cross.
So easy that Bavaria had decided to join the family of nations of the empire.
There was little more than a kilometer from the Austrian border (and imperial) to the side of the Inn, where was held the first conference on this important political action.

Imperial ship arrive at Passau with the delegation

Edwige Fenec was very pleased with the role he had received.
Head of the delegation would meet Klaus Brewer, chancellor of the Republic of Upper Palatinate and Bavaria.
Sure, it was an honor that had touched her own, having been forced to share it with Adam von Liechtenstein and Jackob Redlinger, two soldiers very close to the imperial throne.
Instead of a train, as was expected.
The meeting was held on the ship.
Frau Fenec knew what to ask Herr Brewer, his country would have to give independence and put themselves under the sovereignty of Philip II of Habsburg-Lotharingen.
So far no one had foreseen trouble, had been the Bavarians to seek admission to the Empire.
The real problem was the fate of Bavaria after entering.
Liechetnstein had no doubt about it, a member of the aristocracy would have to take the crown, and swear alliance to his most serene imperial majesty.
Everyone knew that he was very appy to see his son to ascend the throne.
Since the emperor had no male relatives to fill the throne.
Brewer was not the same opinion.
Bavaria enjoyed years of a full democratic system, especially a strong and republican constitution.
Accept the empire did not mean, as regards the Chancellor Bavarian accept a king.
A bill was the empire until the emperor ruled from Vienna, and an account was to have a king in Munchen.
Of course, the willingness to cooperate was very strong and, within themselves Frau Edwige Fenech, had no doubt that would be a success.
Because in truth had already achieved much with this appointment.
She had to be chosen and Petofi.
If she could find an agreement, the emperor would have admired and, the Reichstag would be recognized for what it really was worth.
Any government would have punched it to the Ministers.
Liechtenstein knew how to win, it would have worked the young Redlinger and would draw on his side.
Then finally the time to think when a team of soldiers in full uniform, fired a salvo from the river banks.
The Bavarian delegation waited on the dock.
"Wait, my success," thought Edwige Fenec

Augsburg -Freie Republik von Bayern

The city was not chosen at random by the authorities of the free republic, Augsburg, in Latin, was written Augusta: The city of Augustus, the imperial city.
Chaos in the world the choice to join the Roman Germanic Empire might seem bizarre, but Brewer, as Chancellor of the republic, he knew that the alternatives were few.
To the east were the Amish Children, with their primitive culture, or just emptiness of small states without any political force.
The choice of Brewer was forced.
The interior minister, the Social Democratic Heinrich Luger, whispered "Klaus, we could not expect better than this."
"It is true Heinrich," Brewer said, "but give away ...", so the republic left the sentence suspended.
The morning had been spent to house the imperial delegation, headed by Edwige Fenech, a conceited woman who was not liked Brewer.
A quick panoramic tour of the fountains, the house of Fugger, and then in the main hall of the Town Hall.
The proposal of the empire, for what he saw written in white on black, not like a lot to Brewer.
Before him, impassive, Frau Fenec smile wink.
"Madam Minister," said Brewer, "we see no reason to change our constitution."
Liechtenstein. sharp, said "The empire is not a Federal entity but countries linked to the person of the emperor Philip, therefore, concluded the general" you have two choices, accept or swear loyalty to the emperor or a king to do it for you " .
His eyes brightened, the possibility of the Bavarian throne for his son flashed concreate like never before.
"Herr Chancellor," said acting Fenec "His Majesty Philip is really a man by the democratic spirit and as you can see our imperial constitution provides for strict controls on the prince."
Brewer he could only nod, and Luger with him, it was true "However", he said "we should give up on calling people to become subjects."
"But you would be subjects," said Fenec "the great Roman empire heir to the tradition of the Caesars."
Brewer worked out the words, that the imperial delegate, had said.
A warning but not for him.
Pour the solution could be so simple, reread constitutions and charters, then said, "Our delegation withdraws, we must weigh up the situation well."
Not escaped the smile of Fenec when he leave the room.

"There is nothing good," said Felix Jeger "we had to postpone the interim.
Brewer shook his head "No, Felix said" there was no other solution, as you know, the better of me. "
Luger, who was drinking beer in a corner of the room nodded "There was really no other solution. Look around Felix, Empire is the only real choice for every good German."
Is an unavoidable fate, which would you choose otherwise?" Chuckled "the Amish? Or Kasnya? ".
Felix Jager surrendered evidence "but we can not become subjects."
"Well," Brewer said, "there would be an idea, first we must remember that our country is a republic only in 1918", Felix was about to reply but Brewer raised his hand "wait, let me continue," he said and continued "even disregarding this, Mrs. Fenec offered me an interesting opportunity," spent a substantial memorial to their "useless read it all, just look at the last page.
The two got up and went to read "There would be granted the status of a free state, a wild sort of imperial city, subjects of the empire, but citizens of Bavaria."
They'll want something in return," said Felix.
"Yes," said Brewer, "but it's nothing that we were not willing to pay. New elections, adjustment of our economy to them and things like that."
"So we have to sign the treaty," said Luger.
"Well yes," Brewer said frankly "and our people and even if elections do not lose the majority."
"Brewer," Luger said "it's time to call Frau Fenech and define those agreements."
Brewer picked up the phone on his desk and called.

Süddeutsche Zeitung

Today is a day of tense in the old Regensburg.
The Chacellor of Bavaria, Herr Brewer, signed by the delegate of the Holy Roman Empire, Frau Fenech, a treaty that guarantees full protection to Bavaria and began a journey that will bring in some years, the Lander to really become part of the empire.
Most of the Bavarian people have accepted the compromise that transformed from citizens into subjects but leaving unchanged their freedom.
In fact, His Majesty, Philip II, as we now call it, has granted to Bavaria a number of rights (including the ability to coin money, but on par with the Imperial fiorint, called Bavarian Mark).
Moreover, the Emperor has left full freedom to Bavaria internal administration.
All this has been rightly hailed as a personal success Klaus Brewer that own and against all brought forward the negotiations.
Brewer fact Klaus has created a precedent in our history and opened the doors to the empire of Germany.
Many here in Bavaria (but in Saxony, Hanover, Luneburg, Brandenburg, Thuringia and many other German cities) will be inspired by this action and the courage to Brewer.
Will be the beginning of a new Germany?
Having seen that the emperor has truly desires peace, stability of nations and has civil and democratic spirit, rather than the old Habsburg arrogance, there will be new Lander choosing what he chose to Bavaria?
New flags will be hung in the Reichstag in Vienna?
Maybe, but probably will be at the expense of the flag of Hungary.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Liechetenstein was red with anger.
He tore the paper into pieces so thin and small, seem to be confetti.
"God damn that horrible bitch !!!", said.
In the hotel room where he was housed and Jakob Redlinger uneasy silence reigned.
"What do you think Redlinger? Eh? Am i not been cheated?" Adam Von Liecthenstein.
Redlinger Jakob, the youngest general of the imperial army, did not think at all, but refrained from commenting, merely a simple "There was no other way out."
"Oh no!" He rears Lichtensten "Edwige Fenech wants to kill me."
In fact it was the first thing I thought too.
The Fenec was ambitious and sure of herself.
Skilled to perfection.
"She will point to the Reich Chancellery, said, and within himself he added," and you're an idiot chasing a crown for her child, like a gift. "
"With that title?" Asked another.
"With the obvious title," said Jakob dry, cutting short the discussion "with Bavaria and perhaps the whole of Germany."
