You know, I remember back in the day we had a little web chat interface that allowed us to talk live with anyone who A. Took the the time to actually click the button, and B. Knew that it even existed. I kind of miss it, as we don't always share the same Chat-dedicated program (such as MSN, AIM, etc.) and on occasion PM's are just not sufficient for going into further detail regarding a subject (such as a RP.) Another thing that made it, in my view, extremely powerful is each thread on the board was regarded as an independent "chat room," and only people who are viewing that particular thread will see each other in the interface and be able to communicate; Allowing you to discuss particular subjects away from the main page, and thus, away from prying eyes of whom it doesn't concern. For the more chatty types (like myself for example :P ) there's always the main page of our forums, a lobby of sorts, while the rest of the categories/threads are much like the rooms of a massive, winged library. Despite scrounging for it and trolling the forums trying to find a copy of the link, I have yet to find it. Furthermore the search tool doesn't work for me, so I'm left rather scratching my head as to where the hell it went. To the point I am trying to make: I know the project failed, but I am speculating this has more to do with general lack of knowledge/memory of it being there than an absence of utility. I think I can speak for most of us when I say we all come to the NSWR boards by some kind of clickable shortcut, bookmark, homepaging etc. Which got me thinking, why don't most of us just bookmark/homepage the chat program which, in turn, automatically directs us to the NSWR homepage? Of course this tiny step will require a one-time effort from those wishing to use the program, but I believe it would be well worth the one-time, teeny weeny hassle of bookmarking a damn website and clicking its button rather than installing more chat software, registering, making an account, blah blah... every time you want to talk to a single individual. Furthermore, the fact that it does divide the different threads into separate "chat rooms" is brilliant. For those of us in the lobby, we can idly chat about whatever, and those in the RP threads can discuss whatever it is that needs discussing to further the RP. A wide-spread, live exchange of dialogue and discussion can be a healthy thing. It could potentially help with spawning great RP ideas, and to socialize a bit. The only thing we discuss in the Off-topic threads is mostly politics, ethics, and our beliefs, which can result in some of us being branded an ass, ignorant bastards, or worse; Negatively impacting how these individuals will interact with each other. The lack of communication beyond story-telling can be counterproductive to understanding each others concerns and the person itself, stifling creativity. In a nutshell, I believe it to be (although not an ideal way) a solution to form RP's quicker, in greater depth, to exchange ideas for those RP's, and potentially stumble upon a few epic plot lines. All the while, giving us the opportunity to communicate as a community outside of Political ideology alone; All without ever needing to touch MSN or AIM. |

I hiiiiiighly suggest a jabber chat. I believe (if someone's willing to host it) it can be integrated into most IM clients (even AIM and Windows Messenger/MSN or whatever the kids are calling it) ED, I think it's something you could figure out if I'm able to figure it out. Anyone with a solid web connection and a computer they don't usually turn off can run it, and anyone who uses it can just sign into it whenever they sign into their choice of IM clients. That and you can do individual chats, and chatrooms just like everything else. Just a preference though |

Ventrilo My friends and I use a Ventrilo server. You can get free servers that have a max of 8 people, or you can pay for a larger server. I've seen Ventrilo servers with 300+ people in it. 1 time download, and while operating it opens a window so you can see the names of everyone who is listening to you. |

Actually, I am glad this thread wasn't taken too seriously. Before I made it, I cracked out an old bottle of Stoli and hit a few, was starting to feel a bit sociable, if you catch my drift. Surprised I was competent enough to write anything at all. Guess I've the Russian blood in me, after all. ^^ In any case, what WAS the name of that old chat program we used, Para? |
