Guys, I must thank you all for your warm and welcome B-day congratulations. But I am on this early to deliver some unexpected, and for myself, terrifying news. At 3 AM Monday, we ended up rushing my father to the ER. He was complaining of excruciating pain when lying down, particularly on his side. It all started rather benignly on Friday, by Saturday we were nagging him to get it looked at. Of course, being the stubborn Son of a Gun that he is, he refused. Blowing it off as just a bad scratchy airway. Sunday it got worse, and by Monday Morning, the pain was so bad that he was unable to do much of anything, except walk, stand and lay. That's when we all went ballistic and demanded he go, he caved, still vouching it was just a bad case of nothing. Well, they did some tests, and an EKG... Turns out its a miracle he's even alive... If he delayed another day, he probably wouldn't be here. He had a heart attack involving his Left coronary artery. Blood pressure was 170/100 and his heart rate was rather high. Blood work itself lead towards tell-tale signs of muscle damage/destruction as they released toxins into the blood stream, so they prepped him for immediate catheter exploration of the heart, and found that his LCA was by "medical standards" completely blocked. His secondary left artery (Can't remember the name) is also, as the Cardiologist put it "80% Blocked, and will require treatment in 6 to 8 weeks." Right Coronary is 40% blocked, and needs monitoring, and possible treatment. They managed to clear a fair bit of the complete blockage, but they aren't sure if it'll stay that way. Doc also said there was "noteworthy" as he put it, damage to the lower heart. To what extent and to how much it'll heal, is a step-by-step process. Worse off, we have no way to really pay off the bill for this as he never seen the need to look into insurance, which will be devastating to us financially. Though we're looking into options. It looks like he'll be okay, but its too soon to tell. And he waited a pretty long time, damage to some Heart tissue is already done, and its serious. I got a chance to see him at the CCU after surgery, he was stable, awake, semi-lucid, and seemed to be in pretty good spirits. I must say, I was terrified I may loose my dad this day. For the first time in over 5 years, I was emotionally shattered. Losing a dad will never be an easy thing for anyone, but to lose a dad on your Birthday would be something that, for me, would haunt me for the rest of my life. However, thanks to modern medicine, science, exceptional doctors and, in my opinion, to whatever higher power the universe answers to, he's still with us... So, it looks like I'll go on to celebrate my birthday, just not in the way I had expected... His road to recovery is a long ways off, and its going to take a lot of strength, will, and sacrifice to ever return to the life he ever had. To all you here of faith, please keep him in prayer, he'll need all he can get, and in whatever God(s) you pray to. Sincerely, Eleytheria-Duo. |

What Kas said. That could be called good luck, but good luck would also mean you weren't in that position anyway. I hope for the best. |

I will keep your father in my prayers. I lost my father on Easter Sunday a few years back, and Easter will never be the same for me. My brother, at the age of 48, had pains similar to what you described, and he went into the doctor. That same day they performed bypass surgery on him and replaced 5 of his coronary arteries. He is now 61 and going strong. Your father has a good chance for full recovery with a good diet, and proper excersize, and if he gives you any gruff on this, or doesn't obey his doctors, then you get on him and make him! It is unfortunate about not having insurance, but the most important part is getting your father healthy again. Don't worry about the cost now, that is the last thing he or any of you need to be worrying about. Money is only money, and is not important now. The best to you and your family. Stay calm, and give him all the love and support possible. |

If there's one thing that can be pulled out of this, it's that a glimmer of hope can be enough to pull people through. Your father's recovery should be an emotional one, but use those emotions the right way and great things can happen |

Well, I have an update... Just called less than half an hour ago. He says he's feeling better and the pain is gone. They're going to keep him for a couple of days, monitor his condition. He should be home by Friday. So thank you all for your support. Looks like the family is going to have to keep atop of this, seeing as how there's so much pride in this family. |

I'll eat a sodium-free, tasteless, bland "ultra-healthy heart" diet for the rest of this week in solidarity with your dad's heart E-D. I will consume nothing but wheat fibers, water, and milk. Which happen to be the only things I have left in the kitchen... been too lazy to go to the store in a while :gnarkgnark:

Well I guess that makes eating healthy easy! Getting my dad on a good diet is going to be a nightmare. :phear: And yeah, as you can tell I am a lot more optimistic with this good news. I know he's not out of the woods, but I have faith. I just don't feel as if I need to spend the rest of the week/month worrying what's out of my control, and focus on what is in my control. |

Damn, man, damn. I wish I hadn't missed our IM chat last night, if only to lend some moral support. That kind of birthday must be the turbosuxxor. I'd wish you a late happy birthday, but I guess that would be pointless and rreeeeeaaallllyy insensitive/dickish. |
