"Are you willing to go all the way with this, Sayyid? The new Nizam leaned forward expectantly. Risay felt uncomfortable in the office, silent but for the conversation and the tock-tock of a grandfather clock. He chose his words carefully. "Yes sir, I will find the murderer with any of the tools at my disposal, within the bounds of the Ulganian law and the Quran." The Nizam frowned. "I am worried that the Ulgania's laws will strangle your efforts. The bureaucrats are too easily bribed to be trusted. You didn't hear that from me, of course," he added, "but if Gujjar doesn't get avenged somehow, the Company will be highly upset. And we don't want the Company to get highly upset." "Do I start with any leads besides a body?" Risay ran his hands through his hair frustratedly. This was seeming more and more suspect a mission as his briefing went on. Nizam now grinned--Risay's exasperation was showing on his face. "Absolutely none. The entire body of our current info is that Gujjar was found in Hussain Sagar lake, garroted to death. You couldn't tell much else from the corpse; it was too waterlogged to give much up. You'll need to pick up the word on the street." "Fine, then, sir, may I go begin this now? I can't imagine you have anything else to tell me." He rose to leave, but froze when the Director spoke frankly to him. "Risay Sayyid. I know that this task seems impossible, but it must be done. Baahir Gujjar was a good Nizam, and a good man. Now you go, and find his killer with that on your conscience. Khuda Hafiz." |
