Hmm,. Tom and Tony. Tony is either Norightsa, or Keinsland. Who is Tom?
I did make their names hyperlinks to their profiles.

And Malkav said "Wow, Harumf is still playing."
What? Is he surprised I am alive??

So how long is it going to take to put this all together? I know it can be quite an involved process and I expect it will be awhile.

Assuming I don't get a job interview, I can have us going for next weekend if we're sticking with Scelchester. I got most of the barebones planned out - just fleshing out and dialogue to write.

I never do too much in advance: the point is we tell a story together, not that you act out the story I tell you.

That's generally the more entertaining way to do things. And if this is going to be a sandbox style game, that's just about the only way to go. I'd be ready to start next weekend if that can be worked out with all the other players.

What are we looking at, a few hours? I could probably do that next weekend.

Well a lot of places have turned me down flat, but I'm still waiting to hear back from half a dozen. And Monday is the day I spam my CV to a dozen more hospitals.

There's a very real chance that I will get an interview. But assuming I don't... I'm thinking that before we start playing we need an hour together to make characters and decide on a hook that will let you realistically come together as a group. Not saying you have to come together as a group - you really don't have to, but I want there to be a good reason for you to work together from the word "go" if you so choose.

After that, we really need to do one-on-one sessions to flesh out your character - give you that "human touch" that adds realism.

Then we can start in earnest - I'm thinking two hour weekly sessions.

As for play time... what day and time would suit each of you best? (Please give times in both your local time and GMT).

Before I think I suggested 17:00 GMT (18:00 my time) on a Sunday.

****

[Edit]

Ah, and also, Scelchester isn't quite sandbox. Usually I like to run sandbox games where events happen on a schedule, but how you react to those events is completely up to you. Sure the King might have a job for you, but bandits are raiding local villages, the tavern owner might be looking for a rare mushroom and the prince from the neighboring kingdom is missing because a rouge witch put a spell on him - there's always far too many things going on in the world for you to do them all and the people with "missions" aren't going to sit around and wait patiently wait for you (they've got their own lives). I like to run games where you have complete freedom to do whatever you like, but everything you do (or don't do) has a consequence.

In Scelchester, I'm going to let you do whatever you want (within reason) but the plot will only move forward once you do the "right" thing. Think less Saints Row and more GTA. Less Fable 2 and more Fable 1. The point is that you solve the damn mystery.

And on that note... what level of fantasy are we expecting here?

1. "Realistic" drama? (CSI)
2. Realistic with fantasy undertones? (The Village)
3. Realistic with supernatural mystery ever prevalent but always in the shadows and never overt? (Scoobie Doo/X-files)
Supernatural mystery that builds to a big reveal at the end? (Quantum Leap (especially the "Blood Moon" episode))
4. Monster mystery? (The Ring/The Grudge)
5. Modern Fantasy? (Twilight/Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

I can make any of those work, but I was aiming for something around the middle (2,3,4).

Either 2 or 3 would be good. I'll probably get more than my fair share of strict realism in the near future. Something at least a bit supernatural would be good.

As for time, 17:00 GMT works fine for me. That's 10:00 am my time, which is a little earlies than I usually get up but for the sake of the game, I think I can modify my typical lazy-Sunday schedule. The modified sandbox concept sounds good to me too.

I'm jake with that. though I'd prefer 10 or 11am EDT, but I know that is VERY early on the west coast.

This thread is relevant to my interests.

But I can't do 17:00 GMT, I'm at school. are there any alternatives, or am I gonna have to sit this one out?

EDIT: Is a good-ole-fashioned Play-by-post out of the question?

I guess I can do Saturdays if you've got school on Sundays. I can definitely start an hour later if that helps.

We'll be doing the bulk of the action via a live chat program. I'm strongly leaning towards IRC - you can download a free client from just about anywhere and I can code in a dice bot with very little hassle.

But we'll be blue booking by e-mail (or some other suitable method). For those of you who don't RP a lot, in lots of RPs players are given a cheap book/notepad (a "blue book") where they can keep notes. In between RP sessions they can write down what they want their characters to be doing during "downtime" (time spent between sessions when you're not actually playing - like going to work or sleeping). If that makes no sense, just ignore it - it's not important.

Saturday would work better for me, I think. That's my "off" time so-to-speak, when I don't generally have obligations.

What are we doing for character creation?

Curiosity: is this thread supposed to be only for planning this game we are playing, or is it a more general table top rpg thread? Just want to know because I don't want to start a new thread for anything else if its not appropriate.

Keep it general. If anything needs its own thread it can be split.

Cool. I had a few RPG related things I wanted to discuss, but hadn't yet been sure whether to post them here or start new topics.

1) Has anyone played Ars Magica? Looks like a fun game and appeals to the history buff in me; I was curious to know if any one had any experiences with it.

2) "Angels have descended from Heaven, and they have begun to do the things that angels generally do: obliterate cities, spread plagues, rain down blood, and dispatch swarms of locusts to rend the flesh of innocent people.

You have to stop them."

Spite: the Second Book of Pandemonium sounds awesome from that description; I haven't played the first one Dread; anyone heard of these games?

I think we let this fall by the wayside. This weekend will be bad for me because I am in exam period, but in a few weeks, as I get settled into the summer, I would like to get this going. Also, in the future, perhaps after Nag's game, I have an idea for a game I would like to run.
