At the end of the Boshin War more than 30 years ago, the defeated Northern Alliance was given clemency by Shogun Yoshinobu, and allowed to go on their way peacefully. They settled in the northern reaches of semi-barbarism, in the land known as Ezo inhabited by hairy men and wild beasts.

There they would carve out a new life for themselves, but not with an eye towards the future but towards the past and the timeless glories of Yamato civilization for which they had fought and spilled their blood in the Boshin War and which cannot be taken away from them in life or death.

Many thousands of samurai, farmers, artisans, merchants, and their wives went to Ezo, under the wise guidance of Prince Kita-Shirakawa, the priest and imperial uncle who led the Northern Alliance in war.

The Yamato cities in Ezo have grown in stature, new ones founded, and land brought under cultivation. They fought skirmishes on the margins against the native people, hairy and ruddy in complexion; most battles decided in favor of the Yamato who were of superior organization and technology.

Today the Prince looked with satisfaction on the Ezo country where the people were content and Buddhism secured. But inn technology and methods the disparities between Ezo and the foreign barbarians who sailed across 3 seas from the south could not be neglected for the country's safety. The foreign black ships that entered Matsumae harbor to trade were faster, larger, more ominous each year.

The Prince knew it was time for Ezo to modernize. He rejected the modernization proposed by the Emperor's Council more than 30 years ago during the Boshin War, which he thought came at the barbarians' terms, but he felt secure to modernize today, on the Yamato's terms.

Therefore he authorized a ship, the Fuji Yama carrying learned and intelligent men, to visit the countries of Europe, so that they might identify the most advanced countries and report back with their findings, and teach Ezo what is the best and most modern way of doing things, in technology, government, and military.

The Fuji Yama set sail from Matsumae March 1st, 19___ and sailed to the Suez Canal where they will proceed to Constantinople and learn more about the Byzantine Empire, before proceeding to the other advanced countries of Europe.

The Fuji Yama will stay in Zuhrahlburg, and learn about the ways and technology of Kasnyia.

The Fuji Yama, being crewed by skilled sailors and warriors, does not require the generous assistance of the Irish Navy on this voyage, however it would like to visit Ireland and learn about the ways and technology of Ireland.

Angelcynn would like to invite the Fuji Yama to London. It might be advantagous to both of us to know about eachother if we face similar situations, geography-wise, policaly, or militarily.

Be wary of these Europeans, they seek to place the whole world under their command. And a stronger Ezo would threaten that goal. Do not trust them.

Constantinople

The Fuji Yama reached Constantinople with 31 of the 32 men who originally left Matsumae. The last one died on board the ship during the voyage, of a sudden paroxysm which could not be cured.

The Japanese party consisted of samurai, priests, scribes, and painters. The scribes' and painters' instructions were to commit to paper all the small details of this strange land of Europe.

The Japanese drew much attention on the dockyards of the Golden Horn, where they stood out because the strangeness of their appearances. They were led by a samurai called Hagana, which is translated as "the alchemist". He was no practitioner of alchemy, though he was the most trusted servant of the lord of Ezo.

The Japanese toured the city which they judged bigger than Tokyo but not as big as Beijing. There was a wide variety of people from all over the world here, of every strange skin color and hair color. They also studied the architecture and fortifications of the city, including the grand cathedral of St. Sophia which was a marvellous and delicate sight.

Then they went to the palace where they were received by the Greek Emperor. They presented him with a box filled with gold and silver treasures from the far east.

"We are from the land that is on the easternmost boundary of the world which is the abode of the sun. The sun-goddess is therefore the divine ancestress of our mighty Emperor, who is equal to the Emperor of China and triumphs over barbarians. I am a servant of Prince Kita-Shirakawa, the noble proprietor and lord of Ezo and cousin and vassal of Emperor Meiji." Explained Hagana, the alchemist, to the Byzantine Emperor.

"We came here to learn more about the far westernmost boundary of the world. Here the countries are highly advanced and modern, and we would like to learn about them for the betterment of our own country.

"Tell us, Lord, what is the arrangement of your country? Who are the rulers of the government, and what are their qualifications? What is the state of agriculture and industry of your country? What is your method of ensuring the rectitude of moral-religious ritual among your people? What is your method of maintaining order and harmony in your society?"

Communication to the Fuji Yama in Constantinople

Dear Prince Kita-Shirakawa,

I, Nikolai Alexyevich Matroska wish to host the Fuji Yama for a time. If at all possible, its presence would be considered an honor at the Coronation Ceremony scheduled for the induction of the new ruling government.

Yours, etc...

To, Fuji Yama

If you shall be returning via the Straights as opposed to the Cape, we would like nothing better than to host you in New Rome for trade talks and possible peace agreements, particularly, protection from pirates on the high seas.

"Many centuries ago," the Emperor explained, "God took manhood in the country of Palestine, which is near to here. He established the Christian religion, which is the most divine and perfect of all faiths. The Christian priests are encharged with ensuring the morals and ritual correctness of our people, and it is that God who grants authority to ourself as emperor. For it is considered right that just as there is one God in heaven, Christians should have one Emperor on earth. By assuring that the civil authority works in everyway alongside the Christian priests, order and harmony are maintianed in our society."

The Emperor followed up by describing the economic situation in the country, aided by his advisors. He sought to sell the Japanese on the merits of the Byzantine socio-political order so that they would not turn instead to his rivals.
