The Ever Growing Irish; Conquest and Colonization

Ireland and its colonies were fast becoming overcrowded in the wake of decades of relative peace and prosperity. New lands were needed for the Irish people, and the world was full of unclaimed territory.

South Africa was an obvious point to claim, for he who controlled the Cape controlled the trade that flowed past it. The Irish fleets regularly patrolled past the Cape, making it an ideal place to set up naval bases for refueling and maintenance. However, South Africa was already very populated with its native peoples, and it was very likely the natives would not take kindly to white men suddenly building towns on their lands. Military force would likely have to be used.

Australia was another obvious place to colonize. Its population was sparse, and the Irish were already on good terms with the major native power of Xakhara, having traded with them for centuries. Terms would need to be negotiated with them out of respect. Australia would be a good place to send surplus immigrants, the foremost cause of the overcrowding problem. The immigrants surely wouldn't mind being sent to a place where they would own swathes of land rather than being living in cramped apartments.

China and India would also be logical placse to claim territory, though those peoples were numerous, organized, and thus dangerous. Full scale war would attract to much attention, but the option would be there.

High King Hugh O'Neill issued orders to the military to expand bases into South Africa, and he sent diplomats to the Xakharan Aborigines to negotiate for permission to settle Australia. Spies disguised as merchants would be sent to China and India to assess the situation.

The five members of the Upper Noocratic Council of Xakhara sat in a line of chairs behind a long table in the capitol building. Each one was an elderly aboriginal man wearing a fine suit. The Irish diplomats arrived in Eora and met with the council.

The councilman to the furthest left, Adoni Yuin, was a man with a large bushy white beard which he would constantly stroke. He stood first and said, "Good evening, good sirs. Welcome to Xakhara! My friends... you are welcome here at anytime. As friends. As neighbors however? We cannot allow it. I am sorry! It cannot be done! It simply cannot be done."

As soon as he had finished and taken a seat, the man to his right, Desmond Thaua, stood and waggled his busy, white eyebrows. His small shriveled frame shook as he rose from his seat. He was obviously quite old, possibly the eldest of the council. His stance was quite hunched and he leaned on a western-style cane. Thaua gave a feeble cough followed by a few weezes, then he spoke in an incredibly low voice. "Surely not! My dear dear friends, I'm certain that my esteemed colleague, Mr. Yuin, was simply... confused. Yes. We cannot wait to have you as our neighbors! Yes! We simply cannot wait. Please, by all means. Move in! Come come come..." Thaua smiled and nodded, giving a slightly senile appearance, and sat.

The man on the far right side of the council, Berrigan Keating, rose. Nearly everything about him was completely average except for an oddly pronounced nose. He took a step forward, and muttered something to the man seated next to him, which traveled down the line of council men like a child's game of telephone. By the time it reached the other end, the council members were nodding their heads approvingly. "My friends... I think that Mr. Thauasa is... mistaken. Yes. You see, he is right in one way. We do respect the Irish. Yes. How could we not? The bringers of enlightenment... hm... yes. But you see, we cannot just give away our native land! Perhaps we can... make a bargain? You see, we would like to expand a bit. Yes? In the south. Mmm. Yes. Perhaps if we establish your peoples in the west, then you might be willing to assist us in our expansions? Yes? Here is my proposal. Yes." A map was brought in and placed on the table.

The senior Irish delegate spoke. "Of course. We find this proposal quite agreeable. Though we were hoping for some of the more fertile land in the Southeast, these are your lands, and thus yours to decide what to do with. It would be most hypocritical of us, given the history of our people, to demand any different than what you have proposed." The delegate paused for a drink of water to refresh his voice. "Understand we only ask for this land due to our rapidly growing population. There is overcrowding even in our colonies, and Irish homeless grow daily. I cannot express how great a service your people have done the Impireacht na hÉireann by allowing our people this land. We will gladly assist Xakhara in expanding its civilized rule into the proposed area. This, however, will be a matter for military men to discuss. If this is all, I suppose we ought to draft a treaty covering what we have discussed here. Do not hesitate for any other assistance should Xakhara require any."

A detachment of the Irish Grand Fleet reached the shores of south Africa, escorting an army of ten thousand men. Native Africans could be seen lurking in the woods watching the Irishmen make their encampment. Eventually one came out of the woods to confront them, shouting profusely. Several soldiers raised their rifles ready to fire. "Stand down!" said their commander. "We don't want this to get bloody. Minimize casualties, King's orders." The man continued to shout. The commander let out a sigh, and said annoyedly "Get me the translator."

Suddenly the man raised his spear to throw, and an Irish soldier quickly reacted, shooting the man in the heart. A swarm of natives suddenly came down upon the encampment. "God damn it! Well men, it's kill or be killed! Let's to it!" Gunfire was sporadic at first. The natives had managed to procure a few muskets, and the Irish had little time to organize. Melee soon ensued, with the commander drawing his saber and cutting native after native. Soon the Irish were able to take up formation, and two Brennan meaisínghunnai were brought up, quickly thinning the numbers the the assaulting natives. With this, they were in full retreat. The Irish suffered less than a hundred dead, but this would not bode well for the coming occupation.

Within a week the Irish had established several forts along the South African coast. Scouts were sent inland to gather intelligence on native settlements, and policies were still kept to keep both native and Irish casualties to a minimum. Unfortunately, native assaults continued daily on one of the forts causing their death in the multitudes, though because of this they seemed to be losing steam. The commander of that fort recommended that these violent attackers be crushed, while commanders of the others forts attempted to continue diplomatically.
