The Salenese War; Salenitia moves against Alexanderhaven

It finally happened. After weeks of suspicious talk over the radio and telegraph wires, finally a confirmation of Bahenau's worst fears.

Three hours before, a trawler fleet in the West Mediterranean Sea spotted a large fleet of warships bearing the Salenitian insignia. Unlike other ships that had also spotted them from their journey in the Baltic, the captain of lead trawler knew the politics between Alexanderhaven and Salenitia and decided to report it in to transmission posts in the Byzantine Empire, who relayed the message until it reached Alexanderhaven.

At once, Bahenau organized the Black Sea Fleet to lurch to the Dardenelles and then into the Levant, to lie in wait and engage their enemy.

Meanwhile, the message spread throughout the middle east and europe that war was approaching. Now many who cared would have to decide to support the strategically located Alexanderhaven or the more powerful Salenitia....

We demand passage to the Black Sea. You shall grant us this passage. Ten gold nuggets per ship will be what we pay for your troubles.

Message from Alexanderhaven-

Your assistance will not be forgotten.

- Grand Duke Sebatian IV

-----------------

Recieving no response from the Byzantines, and discovering that ships sailing under the Bahenau flag were near the Levant, the Salenese Imperial fleet made their way to sink the ships of what they saw as a rebellious provincial authority.

------------------

What they did not know was that those ships were of the Alexanderhaven Navy, rather than the merchant marine fleet. The trap was set...

Official Statement from Angelcynn

As a result of our North African province, we should have a say in what occurs in the area. Though we have made no decision as yet, we wish to remain on favorable terms with the Byzantines, our neighbor in the Mediterranean. However, Salentia lies near us as well.

In an attempt to slow these problems, the navy shall come between the dissenting parties.

*****

Moments later the order went out and the Western Mediterranean fleet gathered at Gibraltar. Any ship under the flag of Salentia would not be permitted to pass unless it obviously had buisness in the sea.

OOC: Coming between the parties to buy time for RD. I guess Salentia could just go around Africa or smash through Gibraltar anyway.

"An outrage, these developments," the Salenese Emperor muttered.

"Yes, they are," his brother agreed.

"Not to worry, Your Majesties, Salenitia will have her rightful territory yet," replied the Salenese head general, Ferdinand Begovic Cech.

"Send a message to Angelcynn. Tell them to move out of the way," the Emperor decreed.

Cech smiled,

"Yes, Your Majesty,"

-----------------------

Order from Salenitia to Angelcynn-

"Move."

Response to the 'order' from Salentia

Very blunt. Therefore, your answer shall simply be: no.

*****

Telegram to High Admiral of Norțdǣl Sciphere

Salentia's reaction to the somewhat of a blockade has made clear, actually very clear, that they care not of who is in their way of their goal. Make them regret this, and fire immediatly upon any vessel under their flag who makes an agressive mood. I trust you will enjoy these events, admiral.

*****

Telegram to the High Admiral of Hām Sciphere

The nation of Salentia will likely make a move towards Angelcynn. Be prepared, and do not let them pass the channel.

*****

Telegram to the High Admiral of Gārsecg Sciphere

Take whatever ships you can spare and patrol the western coast of Europe, just out of sight of land. You are patrolling for vessels of the Salentian navy.

The Salenese were not ones who meddled in small talk. There was no use for it. So while they did not understand why these foreigners were trying to get involved in their bid to reclaim what was rightfully theirs, the Salenese also did not care. All who stood before Salenitia will perish, by the Grace of God and the blessing of the Emperor.

The Salenese fleet wasted no time. Immediately they went into battle formation. Nobody alive dared challenge the might of the Salenese Empire. Perhaps when their cities were occupied and in ruins, they would know the true value of minding their own bussiness.

--Statement to Angelcynn--

"Then we are at war. Good day."

High Admiral Clifton Knight sat in the bridge of the battleship, HMS Duke of Rothesay, that also served as his flagship. Reorganization of the placements of the fleets set the Gibraltar blockade under the watch of the Gârsecg Sciphere, freeing up his own ships for the larger battle ahead. He didn't know how far into the Mediterranean the Salentians had gotten. The were plenty of other things he didn't know, like how many ships they had, classes, etc. What Knight did know was that he was in no position to stop them as yet. Northern Africa had a very large coastline, all of which he had to defend with his fleet.

"Excuse me, High Admiral, but we have reports from the eastern portion of the fleet. They've found the Salentians, or at least some of 'em and are currently trading fire with them."

"Excellent! Where are they?"

"HMS Swiftsure reports them to be centered at about 12 miles east-northeast off Malta, heading dead east. They've not slowed regardless of the fire we've thrown at them."

"Find out how fast they're going, and set everything we can spare on this side of Italy moving twice as fast or as close as we can get. Everything to the east of Italy can circle over and delay them. Send in the telegraph operator. Dismissed."

As the telegraph man walked in, Knight felt the throbbing of the deck pick up as the large engines in the battleship moved to full throttle.

"Here as ordered, sir."

"At ease. I need you to draft a telegram to the Byzantines. Tell them that, ready or not, the Salentians are coming."

"Right away, sir." The telegraph operator spun on his heels and left the bridge.

*****

Eastern half of the Mediterranean, somewhere NE of Malta

The HMS Swiftsure raced across the surface of the calm sea. A destroyer, the greyhound of the sea, could do 33 knots. A destroyer could run rings around almost any battleship it wanted, provided the battleship had poor gunners. Now it used its speed to race ahead of the Salentian fleet, along with a few other destroyers that had caught up to them. The battlecruisers, more heavily armed and armored ships, couldn't go as fast as the destroyers.

The current tactic for now was for the battlecruisers to pound the enemy fleet while the destroyers raced ahead to cut them off, showing their side and thus crossing the 'T', an achievment in any naval battle. As the destroyers pounded the Salentians, the battlecruisers could catch up and the tactic repeated itself.

The Salentian fleet was relentless, and kept sailing full ahead, detering from their course only to go around a ship in their way. They fired as they went, no doubt affecting their accuracy, but with more ships and more guns at the moment, who cared? It was not even definate the Englisc ships were even slowing them down at all. But still, they tried.

The lead ship of the Salenese naval group being sent out to Alexanderhaven was the ISS Laconia, a heavy battlecruiser. They had gotten reports from some of the ships that they were engaging the Englisc forces while not stopping toward the Byzantines.

The commander of this ship, Commodore Jean Anton Szell, ordered the fleet to keep its course and save their ammo, firing only when necessary as they had been doing. He then gave command of the fleet to another warship, the pocket battleship ISS Lagress some two hundred knots further ahead. Then the Laconia dropped back and turned south.

It would fight the entire Englisc fleet by itself. It had the munnitions and the armor. Now it would have the will too.

-Message to Angelcynn-

Laconia brings you death.

Most of the destroyers had caught up to the Salenese fleet. A few battlecruisers had also arrived, including, ironicly, a Star class from Alexanderhaven, HMS Star of the Thames. 5 destroyers, 4 battlecruisers, and a cruiser present, the portion of the fleet was now concentrating enough power to severely damage a few ships, even sink some.

At one point, a Salenese battlecruiser swung around and headed back west. Largely undamaged, why it turned around was a mystery to the easternmost portion of the fleet, but not their care. They continued to pound away and direct allies to the fight.

*****

The sixth destroyer, the HMS Sniper flew across the water at it's full 33 knots. So intent on going forward to the fight, the vessel didn't notice a battlecruiser sailing the other way until several large collumns of water gushed up off to port of the destroyer. Swinging left, it fired back, only to be smashed by a direct hit from the unidentified ship. Destroyers traded armor for speed, but even the extra armor wouldn't have helped. A shell had smashed right through the engine room, the men never had a chance.

*****

The HMS Duke of Rothesay rumbled forward, 3 battlecruisers and 2 cruisers alongside.

"-taken a direct hit. Only one boat was launched."

"I beleive this is the Laconia, it sounds like it."

"How did you know, sir? I didn't even give you the estimates yet."

Knight passed the telegram to the aide, "The Salenese are very straightforward boastfull people. Have our small group here set a course to intercept it. I want to personally handle this 'deathbringer'."

"Right away, sir."

About 20 minutes later, the Laconia was spotted on the horizon. The small, heavily armed force swung towards it and waited as the ships drew closer.

"Have the main armament fire immediately. Only the battleship should be able to reach yet." As ordered, the heaviest guns in the flotilla roared. They took longer to reload, but you'd barely notice from the ringing in your ears. Artilleryman's ear was a common ailment.

A few minutes later, the Laconia opened up on the forwardmost ship, a battlecruiser. The gunners were amazingly accurate, the ship went down, though many boats were able to get off. Another battlecruiser suffered a similar fate, though only 2 boats were launched, the rest being torched when the magazine room blew.

Just as the Laconia turned towards another ship, High Admiral Knight screamed, "Don't just sit there, all gun, all ships, fire away!"

Main and secondary armaments fired almost immediately. At least half the shells missed, but just as many scored a hit. The ship burned, lifeboats filling quickly. As it went down, Knight decided its men would be loyal enough to follow. The lifeboats were shot, in a cruel display of barbarity. But who would know? Their telegraph went down with the Laconia, and the luckless saps in the boats wouldn't tell anyone, dead men told no tales.

A mere taste of what is to come. Salenitia forgives not your interference. Death to you all.

The first of the Salenese warships were approaching Byzantine waters. Soon, they would know if they had to fight their way to Alexanderhaven or if they would be allowed to retake their birthright.

Any further action against Angelcynn or Alexanderhaven, as well as any further attempt to intrude into the internal waters of the Roman Empire will be viewed as a declaration of war as well as an insuffrable blasphemy.

"Sir, the Byzantines have issued a warning to Salentia", an aide said as he handed High Admiral Knight a copy of the warning.

"Have the Salenese made any response? They're not making any indication of stopping or even slowing." As if to underscore his words, the Duke of Rothesay opened up with a salvo from the main armament.

"No response, but they've stopped fighting us and are just focusing on moving forward."

Another aide walked in, "Sir, we've entered the Byzantine's territorial waters!"

"Ah, already?! Send a telegram warning them. We'll just continue to do as we can."

***********

The Salenese navy has entered your waters. We have done what we could and will continue to assist, but we cannot go on just nipping at their heels. Act now before they get too close to shore.

The famous Salenese laconic expression came through clearly in the single message given to Byzantium by Salenitia-

"Meddle in others bussiness and we shall meddle in yours. Stay quiet."

----------

The Salenese fleet continued forth, nearing the islands of Greece.

-----------

In the Black Sea, the Navy of Alexanderhaven was preparing itself, awaiting their hated enemy at the mouth of the Dardenelles, with permission of Byzantium. They would maintain their sovereignity and protect their trade magnate, which Salenitia so desperately wanted.

Grand Duke Sebastian IV gave a small statement and broadcast it over the air, intending on their enemies as well as their friends to recieve it.

"Alexanderhaven is indebted to both Byzantium and Angelcynn. Together we shall turn away this foolish menace and show them that they have no place here."

OOC:
I didn't pay enough attention to naval movements earlier, but can we figure something about a bit? I have RP'd before that there is a naval base on Cossyra (Pantelleria), the western most island under imperial rule. That is the homebase of the West Mediterranean Fleet. Also there is a customs port at Malta, where all foreign ships outside of nations approved to travel in imperial waters, are expected to check in before proceeding. (exceptions are nations the empire has free trade with, for merchant ships, and those with right of passage for military ships) Would the Salanese fleet have stopped to engage the Roman one, or simply sped through without concern?

OOC: Thanks.

IC:

Near Cossyra, the West Mediterranean Fleet was being ordered to double back into imperial waters in order to pursue the Salenese renagades. At the same time, dispatches were being sent to Constantinople, Thessalonica, Alexandretta, and Alexandria so that naval groups from throughout the Eastern Mediterranean would assemble to intercept the interlopers.

OOC- I love writing the dialogue of these guys. Hopefully you guys can discern what they mean in less laconic terms.

IC-

"Captain, they swarm," announced the first officer of the battleship SIV Hallen, the lead ship of the fleet being sent against Alexanderhaven.

"They swarm, they die. Prepare," replied the Captain tersely.

"Fleet at ready. We move at their risk," the first officer responded proudly, "By the Emperor's will."

At that the fleet went to battle positions and prepared to do battle with those who would dare interfere in matters that did not concern them. Alexanderhaven was Salenese property and Salenese property alone.

IC-

The Salenese fleet went forward to the islands and made a charge for the closest naval group to the straits they needed to make their way through to clear a path. They fight began fiercely.
