Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. That's where I'm probably going. I've got a scholarship there, but I might go elsewhere.
Congratulations :D

As I understand Phys Ed courses are generally required only in engineering-oriented schools where the administration fears that students' muscles will atrophy from disuse after spending all their waking hours staring at a CAD console, MATLAB, or WoW.

Yes. Drinking in moderation is undoubtedly the way to go. I didn't drink at all last semester and ended out with a 3.6, but I flirted with a nervous breakdown for about the last eight weeks and that necessitated my transfer. Maybe it was all for the best. But having the option to drink and living with good friends that you can get tipsy with on occasion is definitely nice. It helps to relieve the stress generated by all of that studying and learning. There's a reason that college and alcohol go hand in hand. A lot of people just carry it a little too far.

I've also never heard of required PE in college. That's pretty bizarre...

Things I hate about transferring, you put in all your applications in november, then you get your grades and you see your nice 3.48 GPA go down to 3.36 and you start crapping your pants in fear of being rejected due to that drop... especially when you only applied to two schools... and you were fearing being able to get into either of them with a 3.48 to begin with.

That made me swear that taking up drinking during finals week saved my ass as I passed all my finals with either high or very high marks. Though I must say the class that dropped my GPA was not the one I expected to do that. (Looks at Contemporary Moral Issues and wonder WTF then looks at English and goes "How did I do that?") But then again I know exactly what assignment killed me in that class... damn final paper...

So yes, take up drinking, but do NOT over do it.

Queer.
The, uh, depth of your use of language amazes me.

But what did you expect, football, boxing, lifesaving and wrestling?? Hmm, wait - those all require LOTS of physical contact with other men, right? Hmm . . . . .

OK, what did you expect, gymnastics, diving, ballroom dance and syncronized swimming??

Actually, it's very nice to know how to fence, especially being left-handed, because I can beat people even better than me, and nothing intimidates some big jock as much as coming across a room at him with a foil in three thrusts, tip neck high  I love to see them turn away and cower :P

I had 4 required PE classes at my school. I took badminton for all of them. Badminton is a great invention, simply brilliant.

What an odd conversation.

I drank a third of a bottle of vodka last night. Paying for it now. Blah.

I fence. Or used to. I didn't get much instruction, but I'm a good natural. Be odd to fight a lefty.

I only had to take one PE course, and my school offered Capoeira, so I took that one. That was at FIU, as I don't think any other school would offer that as an elective.

So this frat house I've been going to is really pushing me to join.... I don't know. I'm against it, but they seem like decent guys and its always a good time.

Advice? :shy:

Well, if you want to be a fourty-year-old alcoholic with a failing liver and have a bunch of drunken buddies that have never grown up, go for it. I pledged a house my first year in college (Beta Sigma Psi), went through pledge semester, became a "brother" and after getting my grades the second semester requested de-activation. It was just too much for me, but then, I lived in the house, which might have been a big mistake.

It works for some people. A good friend of mine went into Sigma Chi and came out fine, and it helped him with his career (he went into a big-eight accounting firm). I guess it just depends on your personality - I find non-frat ubergeeks to be better people than frat boys, and I think they make better friends, so it depends what you want out of your college experience. If you meet people easily, have an easy time with girls, and can make your way through Uni on your own, you just may not need the frat. Also, remember, being in a frat also has obligations - mandatory party attendence, office holding, chores around the house, community service, etc. depending on how active a particular house may be. If you lliked being in "clubs" when you were a kid, then it might be the right experience for you.

What house is it, and what sort of rep do they have on campus??

I definitely don't need that frat... I can get along with anybody, and people generally like me. I mean I have no problem finding stuff to do or people to hang out with most of the time. It would be nice though knowing that every weekend I would have that backup I could attend if other things fall through. Two of my friends are in the frat already, which is partly why I'm tempted to join, living in the frat house with them would be pretty cool. That really is the biggest reason. The rest of the people in the frat seem cool, definitely fun to hang out with. I really don't like obligations that come with it though. Too lazy, and I have other things that come first (Ohio Bobcats Basketball B) ) that I doubt the frat'd be open to... The frat is Sig Ep, it is liked on campus, but at the same time has its issues as most frats do... Being sued due to a fight that broke out in the house... And that is just that I know of. That said, I don't see the current pledges that I am friends with causing problems like that, and could honestly turn it around in that sense. Not sure, really leaning against it but they are pushing for me to join harder then they push most people, and I've had a good time everytime I've gone to the house or one of there parties... Like I said, probably going to pass.
