I am diabetic. I smoke. I should not. smoking f&%ks with arteries, as does diabetes. It does not aggrevate the diabetes, per se, but it hurts you with what long-term diabetes can screw up. In my humble opinion, if this is a young diabetic, tell them to QUIT NOW. Drinking is also not reccomended.

Type I or Type II diabetes? I'm going to assume type I because you are too young to have type II. You could talk to Devon Wire as he is type I, but I haven't seen him around much.

Work hard to get your A1C hemoglobin numbers where your doctor wants them, then you can have your occasional Gen. Tao, pizza, or even Ice Cream. Blow off your A1C number and you'll be killing yourself slowly by drinking, eating lots of sweet Hunan dishes, and smoking.

I must also assume you are insulin dependent?? Well, that's not going to help you much either because insulin dependence causes weight gain. If you don't already, start excersizing as this will help control your weight, and your blood sugar. Also, if your insurance will pay for it, talk with a real medical nutritionist and learn what you can eat the IS good for you - my favorites are cinnimin (sp?) in my coffee (no sugar), real black olives (not the silly canned ones that are just died green olives), broccolli, fresh, steamed or stir-fried, and I have an apple a day.

Also, take good care of your feet. White socks, even if you are in a suit. Keep them clean. Look out for hang nails, broken skin or signs of infection. One of the first problems you can have as a diabetic is a foot infection that will not heal (due to the circulatory problems that occur with diabetics, particularly SMOKING diabetics) which might eventually lead to a full or partial foot amputation (see Ron Santo, former 3rd baseman for the Cubs). See your doctor regularly and monitor your sugar for low blood sugar - that can kill you quick. High sugar can kill you slow.

Regarding smoking - you won't have any problems there until you are about 40 years of age, except for shortness of breath.. Please make sure you have quit by then, since smoking into your 50's is when all the trouble begins, and everyone I know that quit smoking after 50 had open-heart bypass surgery within three years of quitting, which is why I won't quit.

Stay away from the diet sodas. It is actually better to have a real Coke rather than a diet Coke in spite of the sugar - but you are best not to have either. Black coffee, tea and lemon, water, or scotch and rocks are much better for you.

If you have specific questions, feel free to ask me, or even better, your doctor. Don't be afraid to bug him/her with questions, or better yet, get an endocronologist as your GP. Also, be totally honest with your Doctor - telling fibs to keep from getting yelled at is a real no-no.

Now, the last bit of bad news. Because of poor circulation you will probably suffer from ED (good ole erectile dysfunction) at an early age, like in your 40's. The various meds for that help a whole bunch, and by the time you reach that age they will have better meds, I am sure, if not a cure. Again, nothing to worry about now.

I had a very sugar and meat heavy diet, and almost everyone in my family has diabetes, so I had a genetic disposition. I was also a picky eater, and must now accept vegetables back into my life.

I'm having a hard enough time getting use to the prospect of most likely never eating a Tootsie Roll Pop ever again.

And stuffing my face with disgusting rabbit food. Bleh.

I was a porterhouse.

Control it well, with your diet. Keep your A1C low, and you can eat anything - within reason!

As a Hispanic, diabetes is always a factor for me. It is on both of my families side, my mom was borderline diabetic, my dad is diabetic and my maternal grandma died from it. I wised up a few years ago and started going to the gym and watching what I eat. I could do better, but I eat alot of fruits and vegetables with a little bit of meat, avoid sodas (except mixed drinks) and avoid fruit juice as those are loaded with processed sugars. The biggest change came with more exercise, I go to the gym four times a week now and my doctor was very happy to see so many changes at my last check up.

I should do more research about it. Seeing how I am at greater risk, I can be more prepared and find better ways to prevent it.

You are smart to be dealing with it now, so you won't have to later. Just remember, being hispanic, you have genes from both Europe and Native American ancesters, and it isn't from the European, Mediterannean side where the diabetes inclination comes from. It's what the lousy Western diet does to your Native American genes. If you must eat meat, eat fish. If you must eat red meat, eat game (venison, bison, elk). Whole fruit is excellent. Grapefruit is death. Keep up the excersize routine too, and you'll never come close to getting diabetes! Good luck.

I'm Hispanic too, Harmuf, and fully European.

The problem with the European blood is the mediterranean predisposition towards anemia, which combines with diabetes to wreck havoc.

Goddamn Hispanics. My friend from high school who was half-Icelandic and half-Galician and 100% white, blonde hair, and blue eyes, got a substantial college scholarship for "Hispanics and other underrepresented minorities"

Have you seen my picture recently Tristan?

I'm a fucking albino, with blue eyes, pale skin, and bleached blond hair.

I'm a National Hispanic Scholar, and got a full scholarship to Georgetown for it

Not as bad as my Afrikaaner friend, who was born in Cape Town, was white as anyone, and got into college as an African-American. Bitch.
