"The Star of the Atlantic" steamed into the Carribean Sea on it's way to Florida, belching a trail of black, oily smoke behind her. Several miles west, just out of sight, it's black smoke plume was being shadowed by two much smaller, and faster ships, steaming under a solid black flag. All masts have been removed to create as small a profile as possible, and the two ships, a torpedo boat and a monitor slowly moved on a shallow angled intercept course. By midnight, if all goes as planned, the two pirate ships would be within .5 kilometers of the Star Class battleship on this dark and moonless night, in open waters, after the target ship passes between Hispanola and the Eastern Cuban Coast. There, the pirates would act.

In another part of the world, off the Cape of Africa, a transport is steaming east at aprox. 12 knots. As it reaches the southernmost point in its journey it is overtaken by a small barque flying only the black flag of the pirates, and boarded by 80 men at arms. There are a few shots fired, but no one is killed. The crew of the cargo ship is held on deck while men go below and retrieve three crates, each holding one of the precious Van Gogh paintings. No other cargo is taken. The crates are loaded aboard the Barque which sails an Westerly course away from the stunned cargo ship, which continues its course East into the Indian Ocean.

"Pirates? Are you joking, boy? There is no way anyone could have known that ship was going around Africa!"

"Sir, nothing else was taken, and none of the crew were permanently injured. They knew exactly what they were looking for!"
The ill-lucked messenger quaked to his bones, cowering before the Emir's ire.

"Damn it all. Well, don't just stand there, tell the War Ministry to post a reward for the paintings, make sure they come back safely! Spare no cost, I want those damn paintings back!"

Word spread quickly of the million-dinar bounty on the three paintings' safe return. Soon every two-bit treasure hunter, mercenary or adventurer would be hot on the trail of the barque and its precious cargo.

OOC:
NH, I'd like to let others participate in this little expedition, if that's okay by you. You could post the reaction in New Harumf, and players interested in seeking the bounty could PM you and I with plans and ideas.

OOC: Oh, absolutely! It's a shame we don't have E-bay tho, you might find them listed there. You might want to keep your eyes on various auction houses around the world as well!

IC:
The small unmarked barque reached the islands that might be called Islas Malvinas. There, in the lagoon of the larger archepeligo, the three crates were transfered to a small battle cruiser flagged with a Lambda League ensign. The barque continued west, to eventually go North along the South American coast while the cruiser proceeded North to join with the New Harumfian South Atlantic Fleet for routine patrols. Over the course of the following weeks the crates were moved from ship-to-ship, until not even the fleet commander knew the location of of them.

Meanwhile, in United Province of New Harumf's national capital, Current head of "The Group", Mary Smiles, senior member of the legislative branch, released the following press notice:
Quote:

It has been widely rumored that a pirate barque boarded an Al Qalaa cargo vessel in the passage between the South Atlantic and the Indian Ocean and absconded with several works of Modernistic art. I have received assurances from Chief of State, Elder Max Elam of The Harumfian Province, and Pirate King Anaconda of the Lambda League Province, that our ships were not in any way involved in this theft. It has been further speculated that Al Qalaa may be misrepresenting the claim for insurance reasons.

Regardless, we have asked the detective arms of both provinces' judicial branches to investigate, first, for the existance of any unregistered barques that may have been seen in waters patrolled by our shore fleets, and second, for any sign of attempts to sell works of European art, particularly Dutch abstract art. Personally, I see no value in this sort of "Impressionistic" art, and could not understand anyone's desire to own such ugly things, but will respect the desire of the Emir to recover the canvasses. When the investigation is complete, we will make known whatever has been discovered.

"Stop your ship, or we will sink you."

That message came from the monitor cruising alongside the Star of the Atlantic, it's guns ready to fire. Up ahead the torpedo boat kept its distance but the pilot of the Star new its torpedos were loaded and ready to fire. He therefore gave the command to go to full stop in the calm seas off the Cuba coast. Immediately armed men began swarming on deck from the monitor and began rounding up the small crew delivering the Star of the Atlantic to Miami. Once the entire crew was aboard a new man from the monitor took the helm and began steering the boat out toward the waters of the Atlantic.

A pirate approached the crewmen, now all tied and in a circle amidship. "Gentlemen, you have nothing to fear. The majority of you will be sold back to your families and loved ones for very modest ransoms. A few of you, considered worthy, may be taken as slaves, but you will be treated fairly. I suggest you act appropriately, stay quiet, do as you are told, and none of you will come to harm."

"Listen here, you filthy pirate scum," came a voice from the circle of men . "I am the commander of this ship, and it is the property of . . . "

Before he could finish the sentence a bullet was put through his head from a man standing behind him. The speaking pirate continued, "As I said, act appropriately, STAY QUIET, and do as you are told!"

"Now, ye swabs, stand and get below decks!" This command came from a rather scurvy-looking pirate with rotted teeth. He started grabbing shirts and pulling the men toward the ladders to the lower decks. He then grabbed one of the youngest crewmen and held him. "Not you, my pretty. You come with me!" He then dragged the young sailor toward the aft quarters, and the young lad started crying, not knowing what would become of him. The rest went silently below decks.

The Quartermaster of Havana's deep water harbor was woken by a loud thumping on his home's door.

"Damn kids" he thought as he rose, sleepily shrugging on a bathrobe. However, through the peep hole he saw not a miscreant youth, but instead a nightwatchman from the harbor.

"Sir, please open up. It's one of the new ships that was due to arrive this morning. According to fishing vessels in the area, it has dropped flag and turned around, headed out to sea. What should we do?"

Cursing, the Quartermaster slipped on his shoes. He could see that he had a long day ahead of him.

Upon hearing of increased pirate activity, the Irish navy increased patrols in the East Indies, the Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic. If the pirate in question happened to be captured by these patrols, he would be turned in for bounty. All others would be sent to penal colonies.

Takeo Hirose reeled in his line.

He was finishing from the deck of his Ironclad warship. Hirose was granted a large amount of leeway with his ship - the Imperial Council sought to replace the Ironclad warships (all too recently built) with metal hull cruisers. Captains of the "obsolete" vessels that made up the bulk of the Nagian Navy were given a free hand to roam the open sea - the serious defense of the homeland falling to newer ships of the line. Hirose's days, like many Ironclad captains, were spent protecting the Nagian merchant navy's fledgling trade routes, keeping fishing areas secure and engaging in respectable mercenary actions (actions that would not bring dishonour to Nag Ehgoeg).

A million-dinar bounty to run down pirates and return stolen treasures to their rightful owners certainly seemed like an honourable use of his ship.

"My dear Pirate King, I think you are going to like this little demonstration."

"I had better. You took me out of my cool home into this jungle, and this better be good," said The Anaconda.

"Sir," said Captian Welsh, "you remember how we have always discussed how we could be suseptable to a land assult?"

"Yes, if someone was crazy enough to lead forces through the jungle. They'd lose have their force, of course, but we have no real weapons to defend a land assult through the underbrush. No targets can be seen to aim a gun and our cutlasses are worthless in such heavy foilage."

"Well, sir," continued Capt'n Welsh, "I was with a small force heading to the mines beyond the Amish country and I saw the most peculiar thing. I borrowed it, and have been dying to show you."

"Get on with it, Welsh, quit wasting my time."

"Yes. Look to the tree line yonder." Welsh pointed east from the riverbank to the dense undergrowth. At first, The Anaconda couldn't see anything of note, but as his eyes ajusted to the dark behind the trees he saw several shadowy figures. "There are 100 men behind the trees there, almost unnoticed."

"Are you planning some sort of mutiny, Capt'n?"

"Oh, no, my dear King. Those men are prisoners form our recent raids. They are all tied and chained in place, but I wanted to show the effectiveness of what I have found." Welsh raised his arm to signal the start of the demonstration.

A lone pirate came into the clearing with some sort of contraption. It looked like he had three tanks strapped to his back connected to a hose he held in his hand. He pointed the hose toward the woods filled with prisoners, and then let loose with a stream of fire. Burst after burst of flame shot forth, and the prisoners could be heard screaming while they burned alive. In a matter of seconds all the screaming died down and only the smell of petro and burnt meat remained. In addition, the woods were now clear of underbrush and all the smoldering bodies could be clearly seen.

"Interesting." Said The Anaconda. "Begin production and training at once." He then stormed away, and left Welsh grinning widely.
