Doctor Chipahua Itztli has petitioned the government for foreign assistance in efforts to control the spread of Western Syphillis in the Mayan regions of Yocatlan, Chollan, and Copan. Death tolls are high at 2,734 and another 6,000 are estimated to have contracted the disease. "We need to reach out to the West to find the medicines necessary to treat such a disease," reports Dr. Itztli in a meeting with Mexica legislators in Tenochtitlan yesterday. "We must put aside our prideful policy of isolationism and reach out to the science and technology that is improving the lives of peoples in countless nations beyond our shores." Such remarks upset the conservatives who threatened to remove Dr. Itztli from his post as Head of Medicine of Chollan Province. However, with more than enough progressives in power in the House of Huitzilopochtli, a plea for international assistance has been approved by a majority of 71% of legislators. Meanwhile, refugees from neighboring Mayan areas under Western occupation are cause for concern as they bring more disease and economic constraints to Ozomatlan. Foreign aid is also included in the petition for international assistance. "We have at least 12,820 refugees accounted for in a camp near Copan," says Governor Axayacatl Macuilxochitl of Copan Province. "Tenochtitlan is providing us with additional food resources to assist the refugees, but as more arrive daily, we will soon have too many mouths to feed." Not all refugees are infected with the disease. Rather, most are escaping the colonial activities that harm and destroy their lands and way of life. "Many are distraught that acres of forest are being flattened to make way for Western-style farming. Temples once shrouded by pristine tropical rain forest are now exposed to the elements of erosion by the sun and the wind. |

The Imperial Roman diplomat Isaac Xanthou set out from the Golden Horn with several ships after recieving word from the Imperial Foreign Office. He had been assigned a medical team and supplies, as well as experienced navigators with American maps. The ships first arrived in Alexandria, where several other Greek and Egyptian physicians would join the medical team before the ships made their voyage westward, toward the lands of the setting sun. After departing from Alexandria in Egypt, the ships sailed west, where the stopped in Malta for customs going out. Naturally this was not an issue because Isaac Xanthou was an imperial envoy. So the ships then continued to sail west past the Pillars of Hercules, across the Western Sea toward the lands of the Mexica. When the finally arived at the Mexican ports, they were greeted by an emissaries sent to welcome them by the government of Ozomatlan as well as Atlantean translators to facilitate communications. |

Governor Ocelotin Atlatonan of Totonacapan Province received the Roman envoy at Tlaloctlan harbor in the early morning hours of 5-Tecpatl 1-Cozcacuauhtli 2-Ollin, or 26 Ioulios 1900 as the foreigners recorded it. Unsurprisingly, these were the same foreigners that spoke a language quite similar to that of the Atlanteans who make their homes here in Ozomatlan, as reported by a representative to the recent Global Summit held in Tokyo. Through Atlantean translators, Atlatonan greeted his Roman counterpart Isaac Xanthou and presented his crew with offerings of gold and jade. A feast fit for royalty was had aboard Xanthou's vessel, as the foreigners are yet allowed to set foot ashore pending medical clearance from local doctors. Though they did not resemble the colonists responsible for introducing the plague to the Maya, they were from the West regardless and all precautions had to be taken. Nor did they quite exactly resemble their Atlantean cousins, who are slender, long-faced, and darker-skinned. Nevertheless, there was much festivity aboard the Roman ship which carried into the night, accompanied by a magnificent display of fireworks. As cold-shouldered an empire as Ozomatlan makes itself out to be, there's always been a penchant for exuberant displays of might and majesty to outsiders, be it in the form of warfare or merrymaking. Meanwhile, another response to aid was received at Xoconochco in Cuzcatlan Province. Three foreign vessels approached the harbor with gunmen aboard. In response, five ships were prepared to intercept these seemingly apprehensive newcomers. After finding an interpreter who made known the reason for their arrival, the mayor allowed them to dock. As nobody was allowed to board their ship, and no foreigner was allowed to disembark, all transactions took place on the gangway, where relief supplies were given to the local government in order to alleviate the refugee crisis escalating in the hinterlands. Because of the nature of the procedure, however, no festivities were held aboard the Harumfian vessels. |

The Telosan Empire shall remain neutral in these affairs. More troops have been sent along the Ozomatlan-Telosan border, to prevent any foreigners from attempting to cross. A station was set up along the border, which quickly grew to the size of a small town or large village. Telosan announced that this town would be considered international territory for the plague only. While Telosan provided supplies to the foreign doctors they invited, they avoided the Ozomatlan citizens. The relief center was a way for aid to reach more inland people. |

OOC: Telosan, aren't you Cynerice of Angelcynn in NS2? The envoy from Ezo was moored in the harbor of Xoconochco alongside the Harumfian vessels. After thorough examination of the physicians and priests, they were permitted to disembark. However, the samurai, brandishing their long, slender swords, were not permitted for fear of disturbing the peace, for it is lawful duty in Ozomatlan to strike down a non-Mexica carrying a weapon. Also having been cleared, the Roman envoy was escorted ashore by Altantean priests and Mexica warriors early the next day. The entourage would make their way first to the capital city, Tenochtitlan, to pay respects to His Holiness Hueyi Tlatoani Cuauhtemoc III and engage in diplomatic endeavors. |

As the Roman travelled to Tenochtitlan, Xanthou spoke to the Atlantean translator, and occasionally to Atlatonan by way of the translator. The Greek spoken by the Atlanteans was a more archaic kind than that spoken at court in Constantinople. It had changed little from the Greek spoken when the ancestors of the Atlanteans had first arrived on these shores. Xanthou's education had naturally taught him the Classical forms, but it required some mental adjustments for him to get used to speaking the Classical manner. But, generally speaking, he was glad to find some who spoke his language in this strange land. When the Roman party reached Tenochtitlan, Xanthou and the other Greeks and Egyptians who had accompanied him were introduced to the Mexican ruler in order to pay their respects. |

Nag Ehgoeg sympathises with the plight of the Mayans. Unfortunately, the logistics of providing medical aid to your people present a challenge that we do not feel we can overcome. Kinjō Heika is pleased that our brothers in Ezo have taken a more active role in this event. The Emperor would be pleased if the Ezo expedition share the knowledge that they gain in Mexico with Nagian physicians. Appropriate reparations will of course be granted in exchange. OOC: In NS2 I'm still Telosan. By the end of the week I will assume enough time has gone by for Emperor Trekon to return from the world conference. Upon his return, the government will capsize and then it will be the Cynerice. Till then, just Telosan. Nothing much for me to say IC here. Need people to take notice of the place I set up. Oh, and forgot to mention that there is a train that runs near the border. The town would be adequetly supplied. |

Posted Image Xanthou was much entertained by the Atlantean priests, specifically Kahotepe Xochixocoyotzin Atlantiuh, whose handle of the Mycenean language was unmatched among them. It was through their discourse that Xanthou was able to piece together one of the world's greatest puzzles...the lost world of Atlantis. Apparently the people of the Aegean island of Thira, who escaped the massive erruption that occured nearly 3500 years ago and nearly destroyed all vestiges of their civilization, wound up thousands of miles away in a world unbeknown to the ancients. Their trade with the Mycenean Greeks provided them with the means to communicate with the Romans, though their own language was somewhat akin to that of the Egyptian physians, who also were able to take part in their own conversations with other Atlantean priests. Their arrival in the “New World” predated the arrival of the first mighty mesoamerican civilization of the Olmecs, who came to power in the 1200’s BC. Throughout the various Mesoamerican Empires, the Atlanteans have enjoyed their status as a protected people, bringing various arts and sciences with them and teaching their neighbors. Perhaps the most notable are the Maya, who owe their astronomical and mathematical acheivements to the teachings of the Atlanteans. Upon reaching the glorious city of Tenochtitlan, Xanthou was awed by the shear spendor of the valley surrounded by smoking mountains and in the middle a city appeared to float on water. Kahotepe guided them across one of the many causeways that lead to the island in the middle of the lake, up to the main palace complex. The highpriest of Huitzilopochtli, Quetzalcoatl Totec Tlamacazqui, performed ritual blessings on all who were to enter the Emperor’s chamber, passing around a bowl of pulque for everyone to partake of. Hueyi Tlatoani Cuauhtemoc Ipanyei was prepared for the occasion. His headdress of dark green and purple quetzal feathers contrasted with the gold jewelry that adorned his body. A jaguar skin cloak hung around his shoulders and covered his feet. Yet nothing else covered his body except for a loincloth. Xanthou, a bit taken aback by such immodesty, averted his gaze from the perceived nakedness of the emperor. This gesture alarmed the priests, who instructed the Roman to regain his poise lest he insult His Majesty. And thus he spoke: |

Isaac Xanthou quickly regained his composure, and resolved to avoid further embarassing his hosts. He bowed in respect to the great Mexican sovereign, and then began to speak. His speech was translated line by line by one of the Atlanteans. "Greetings," he said, "mighty and honored archon of these furthest western countries. In the name of my master, the ruler of Crete and Thera and Mycenae and Egypt and the countries of the east, I pledge my assistance to your country in this time of troubles. I have come from my homeland bringing some of our most talented physicians and appropriate medical supplies, and I offer them and their service to you as a token of our friendship. "It is my hope that these contributions will aid your people against illness. It is also my hope that our countries can establish a relationship of friendship and trade across the great ocean that divides us." |

His Holiness spoke through the Atlantean interpreter to Xanthou: "It is the answer to our prayers to Patecatl that he send us the long-lost brethren our our friends with the knowledge to rid our people of this pestilence. As the chosen people of Patecatl, you will be exalted and venerated as gods among our people. We will build a temple in your honor for your own use however you see fit, and we will equip your team will two-hundred of our finest warriors to do your biddings." Another man, seated along the left side of the throne room moved towards the Romans, followed by his servants, and adorned the men with necklaces of gold, rubies, and emeralds. The Romans' eyes gleamed with excitement, yet such adornments were not as valued among the Mexica as they are in Byzantium. Ozomatlan teemed with such marvelous quantities of precious metals and stones and knew how much they meant to Westerners. Then the man spoke to them: "I am His Majesty's Chief Economist, Tochtli Yacatecutli. It is the emperor's wish to commence economic relations with your people, and we have many goods to offer. Our tribute lands bathe us with luxury goods like gold, silver, turquoise, jade, rubies, emeralds, copper, bronze, greenstone and feathers. Our fertile volcanic soils grow the finest cacao beans in America, as well as corn, beans, coffee, bananas. coconuts, sugarcane, and rubber products. We also have thousands of slaves at any given moment for sale for any purpose. We desire that you send your learned men to teach us the secrets of your medicine and technology so that our nations are made an example of greatness to the world." OOC- Tristan or New Harumf, this is not exclusive, you can send a delegation to Tenochtitlan to commence trade talks as well if you like. Send me a PM with a story idea if you like, or just post in here. Edited by lilgrexicano, Dec 25 2008, 12:08 AM.

Xanthou thanked the Mexican monarch for his precious gifts, and promised to send for Roman scholars from Constantinople's universities and other institutions to come to this land to teach its people Roman learning. He was delighted by the listings of goods made, and eager to begin trade as soon as possible. The continued to discuss this amiably, and a new friendship between nations seemed to have begun. |
