FOREWORD

The events chronicled here took place in the Gregorian year 1900, the town of Qeshm, on Qeshm Island in Qalaa'i Persia. Everyone agreed that the extraordinary event that occurred was rather out of place in the rather ordinary town, a sleepy little port on the Gulf,.

The town, by most accounts, is like most other Gulf towns, perhaps made a little brighter by the presence of the Hara marine forests, a popular destination for migratory birds and hapless tourists alike. The town also hosted a small fort of the Emir's men, where I was stationed as an army doctor. This most ordinary town was caught well off-guard, then by the plague, which descended most vengefully upon this hapless little village.

I intend, with this journal, not to keep a medical record, but rather a record of the human reaction in the face of calamity -- in the face of the absurd.
