OOC: This is a bit of a hijack, but yeah... Game idea. IC: Around four hundred years ago a Dutch man invented the revolutionary bend drive, a machine capable of bending space around it through magnetism allowing vessels to reach destination faster than light, while never actually reaching the speed of light. Believing Earth's end to be imminent, he and his corporation constructed several colony vessels to head for the nearest star system, Alpha Centauri. Tens of thousands took up the journey, and upon reaching their destination, they found the system rich with colonizable moons, most needing some terraforming or life support, but a valued few being terra approxima. Within the next few decades, the colonies flourished, and trade with Sol brought great prosperity. But soon enough the Dutchman's prediction came true, and Earth was snuffed out all too easily by a solar flare. The colonies panicked. Infighting ensued. The dominant trade organizations of the most structured moons took power, and formed the League of Free Nations. Resistance to the new power was quickly and easily crushed, and unity was restored. The LFN rebuilt and continued to colonize and explore, even reclaiming the now volcanic Earth. However, the LFN was biased to the terran moons, and other worlds began to grow discontent with the trade bias. The city moon of Centauri Prime seceded, taking with it several mining corporations, ship corporations, and ice moons. It declared itself the Centauri Republic, and established an Emperor on Centauri Prime. The LFN had no choice but to recognize their sovereignty, as the new Republic held too valuable resources to go to war with. However, upon seeing this successful succession, the outer moons rebelled as well, creating the Imperial Union. Low on resources, the IU attacked the Centauri Republic, exterminating one of its colonies with a terrible fleet. A great war ensued, ending with the LFN and Centauri Republic conquering most of the IU, banishing them to the four most outer moons. The IU had no choice but to look elsewhere for its survival, and its war fleets quickly recommissioned to explore. Eventually a holy war broke out between the Centauri Republic and the LFN, and the LFN quickly proved to be the stronger. Up to this point the main mode of in-system travel had been solar sails. Knowing that they could not keep up with the LFN in production and quality of such ships, the Centauri Republic engineered new ships, constructing grand fleets of ion-engine powered dreadnoughts. With inferior numbers, the Republic pushed the LFN out of its colonies, and an eventual cease fire was reached. In the next few centuries, the LFN and Centauri Republic flourished through trade with each other and alien nations found through exploration. The occasional trade war was fought between nations within the LFN, and occasionally against Centauri corporations, but overall the situation was stable. Meanwhile, the IU gained strength colonizing more and more worlds beyond the Centauri system, and bringing other alien nations under their Union. The stocky Geln people and the immense Nyrac of the Nyrac Empire were the main nations to join the cause, and eventually the IU rivalled the other humans in trade. However, a greater threat lurked beyond. The ancient Robusian Empire, a peaceful, advanced, yet fallen nation, and main trade partner to the human nations, warned the humans of such things, advising them not to expand too far. Yet the threat could not be stopped. A people that had managed to throw off the yoke of oppression of this unknown empire sent out for help, and the Centauri Republic answered their call. The Grand Fleet was sent to the distress coordinates, finding odd ships organic in nature. Upon entering this far away system, the Centauri fleet was brutally attacked by the odd fleet, but it easily prevailed. The Centauri Republic found itself with a grateful ally, the nations and peoples of Telnar, but did not know how great an enemy they had provoked. The Verrick Empire's planets were uncountable, its armies endless, its ships limitless. Yet somehow the Centauri and Telnarians resisted the onslaughts. However, somehow the Verrick found the location of the Centauri system, and quickly sent motherships to open gates to the system. It was not long before the Centauri Republic was overwhelmed, and Centauri Prime was blockaded by the Verrick fleet. The LFN stood by and did nothing, going on with their business, though millions of mercenaries flocked to the cause of the Centauri Republic. Surprisingly, the IU seemed to come to the aid of the Centauri, but their intentions were soon revealed. In reality, the Verrick and Nyrac Empires had been fighting a war for over a thousand years, and the Verrick were simply using the Centauri system as another jump point to get closer to bringing vengeance upon their enemies. Their policy of warring with the local nations was no different than it had been for many peoples subjugated before, explaining the reason for the Verrick's rapid expansion. Ironically, however, the Verrick were not the threat that the ancient Robusians warned about. It is now the 27th century AD. War runs rampant across many systems. The Verrick die in waves, yet never stop coming. The IU subjugates alien worlds, fights pointlessly with the other humans hoping to reclaim worlds lost centuries ago, and wages a brutal war with the Verrick. The Centuari Republic continues to launch crusades and jihads against the invaders, hoping to distract the Verrick from their home world by striking vital worlds. The LFN simply sits by and continues to trade with everyone, being the only ones who heeded the advice of the Robusians. It is a time of death. It is a time of corruption. It is a time of total war. OOC: Like how I stole from Total War at the last? Who's interested? This is the story of me and my brother's game, but it is totally flexible. One could take up a conquered nation within the Verrick Empire and throw off the yoke of oppression, be a nation within the LFN (which have many rights and are quite free), or be a different alien race all together. There are overall systems, plans, and plots to be explained and revealed if interest is given. Believe me, this won't be disappointing if given some commitment. |
