Altanta, Georgia, United Confederate States

President Littleton read the morning paper, the Southern Current, as he did every morning before breakfast. Head still throbbing from the heavy drinking he did the night before, sometimes reading the paper was difficult. Still, headache aside an article in the international news section caught his eye. It was a break he had hoped to catch and quickly phoned his cabinet and the Vice-Presidium for a meeting.

Within hours both parties were assembled at the Grey House, in the conference room for a meeting with the President. A bit disgruntled that most had missed their own breakfast, aids ensured them that the President would have breakfast served after the meeting. Wearing one of his more stylish suits he entered the conference hall and took his seat at the head of the table.

"Gentlemen" he stated firmly "I do apologize for the swift call for a meeting, of which made most of ya'll miss breakfast but something has arisen which boast a promise of good fortune for myself and the country. No doubt most of you have read this mornings paper, specifically the article on the Porcu elections? It would appear that current President Nixon is in favor of such a meeting."

"I feel that such a meeting within President Nixon would help kick start my foreign policy of seeking out new democracies across the world and bringing about a sense of brotherhood between us. Some nation has to stand for the free world and by damn I hope to make the United Confederate States that said world. Therefore I want to plan a trip to Europe, to meet with President Nixon and discuss matters of diplomacy with him. With any luck he'll meet with me and the two of us can create a bond favorable for both nations."

"All I need now is my Vice-Presidiums support."

The members of the Vice-Presidium look at each other and discussed the matters a bit in whispers. Eventually the group came to a consensus and Arkansas Governor Sebastian Fulton, a fellow party member of the President, stood and speak for the group.

"Sir, we feel this move would be great in helping to boost the image of the South as well as help to kick start your foreign policy. The South needs allies and what better country to start with than Pocru, a nation surrounded by Monarchist and Communists."

"Excellent" said President Littleton " then I shall waste no time in contacting their government. Mr. Bragg, find any expert in the country you can on the Porcu people, specifically their language and have a message sent to their government at once."

Secretary of State Jim Bragg gave a nod "of course Mr. President."

"Well gentlemen, you're dismissed" said the President. "Enjoy the eggs and bacon before you leave. With any luck, I'll be dinning in Porcu soon."

Open Diplomatic Transmission

To: Democratic government of Porcu
From: Secretary of State Jim Bragg, United Confederate States of America

As your government must well know, President Littleton of the United Confederate States of America wishes to begin a foreign policy whereby the Confederacy has more open diplomatic discussion with fellow democracies such as yourself. It is his sincerely hope that the Confederacy can bridge the gaps between the world's current democracies and help lead the free world into an area where democracies stand strong against Communist and Monarchical oppression.

In it his personal hope that this mission can start in Porcu. Noting from news media that President Nixon is not opposed to meeting with President Littleton, the Confederacy's President would like the esteem honor of meeting with President Nixon in Stockholm which would not only mark a historic first trip by any southern president to Europe but also the first time the Confederacy has ever open diplomatic relations with a country outside the Americas.

If able, President Littleton would like to leave at once for Stockholm to arrive and begin talks with President Nixon on issues of democracy, defense, and faith.

Official Communique
To: Secretary of State Jim Bragg, United Confederate States of America
From: Senate of the Swiss-Roman Republic of Porcu

On behalf of the citizens of the Swiss-Roman Republic of Porcu it would be an honor to host the honorable President Ted Littleton here in Stockholm. Please excuse us, the President is still in the process of organizing his new cabinet and has not yet announced whether he will keep his former Minister of State or name a new one.

In any case, should President Littleton require any special accommodations during his stay in Stockholm we would be honored to see those carried out immediately. All formal discussions will be held in President Nixon's abode, several kilometers outside the city itself, although President Littleton will be greeted at the airport upon his arrival and then escorted through the city, visiting such sights as the Senate building and the Royal Palace, before being transported to Nixon's home. If our proposal does not meet your approval please do tell and we shall look to have it meet your requirements.

The people of Porcu anxiously await the leader of the Confederacy.

Open Diplomatic Transmission

To: Senate of the Swiss-Roman Republic of Porcu
From: Secretary of State Jim Bragg, United Confederate States of America

President Littleton has requested no special accommodations for his stay in Stockholm. He is pleased that President Nixon has agreed to meet with him and looks for to the hospitality of the Porcu people. His flight will be leaving shortly from Atlanta and will arrive in Stockholm promptly.

President Littleton's stings were packed and loaded onto Confederate One, a special airliner he had constructed before he publicly announced that he would be seeking a foreign policy whereby he'd be visiting foreign nations. Somehow he was able to keep it hidden, even after his announcement. However, on the early morning of his departure just a day after contacting the Porcu government, the jetliner was a secret no longer.

Hundreds of people, both journalists as well as bystandards came out to see their President off. It was a historic moment for Confederate citizens everywhere. Never before had a President of the United Confederate States traveled outside the Confederacy on a diplomatic mission. Though a few before him had attended weddings of foreign dignitaries, for the past decade or so the Confederacy had not once seen a President off. Ted Littleton however was changing all that, and would soon go down in the history books as the first Confederate President to visit the Swiss-Roman Republic and the first to travel to Europe for diplomatic matters.

Aids abound on his jet, including an interpretor, the President loaded onto the jetliner and watched as the hundreds that came out to see him off cheered on while the jetliner lifted off and into the skies.

The plane ride was a relatively smooth ride, with the President spending his hours inside his office. He hadn't had a drink in hours which was a record for him. Citing the importance of the meeting he opted not to take a drink, believing that if he was successful he'd not only win a major victory for his country but also a victory for his party back home. A success in the Swiss-Roman republic could promise him a second election.

After going over what records and information the Confederacy had on the Procu people, their government, and their military the President soon noticed that they were nearing the end of the journey. His suspicions were confirmed when the pilot announced over the intercom that they would be landing soon. Cleared to land in Stockholm's airport the jetliner came to a soft landing.

Outside the President could see that the Swiss-Roman had come out much as his people did for the historic meeting. News media was everywhere taking pictures of his plane as well as their own delegation which was awaiting the President outside. When the stairs were finally brought to the side of the plane, the door was swung open and after adjusting his tie one final time President Ted Littleton made history as he stepped out of the jet and into the air of the Stockholm airport.

He paused momentarily as he waved to the crowds of citizens and media as they furiously took pictures. He then slowly made his way down the stairs and across the way to the Swiss-Romans awaiting him. Extending his hand to the welcome party, he politely introduced himself with a translator relaying his message in the Porcu language.

"On behalf of the United Confederate States of America, and the South people may I say what an honor it is that I, President Ted Littleton have the esteemed privilege of coming here to Stockholm to meet with you. I look forward to our conversations and hope that our two countries make great strides forward in diplomatic relations between us."

President Richard Nixon was firm on his decision to personally meet the Confederate President himself at the airport and was certainly happy to see his guest arrive safely. Much pomp and splendor had been put into the greeting, an honor guard of the Swiss-Roman Security Force bordered the area around the jet's stairs providing a clear path to the Swiss-Roman delegation. Scores of reporters and journalists from all over Europe had gathered off to the side, elbowing each other for prime picture positions, and even more scores of citizens waving Porcuian and Confederate flags greeted President Littleton and his delegation.

President Nixon eagerly extended his hand and firmly shook Littleton's hand once he came before him. Littleton's message was quickly translated.

"Your accent is near perfect!" Nixon responded in Latin, the official government language of Porcu. "May I say that on behalf of the people of Porcu it is an honor to host such an esteemed guest as yourself today. I have no doubt that our two nations shall become immensely stronger after our discussions the next few days." Nixon then decided to switch over to English, a secondary language but one that all Swiss-Romans were taught as children. "Please follow me Mr. President..."

With that Nixon kept one hand on Littleton's shoulder while showing him the way towards the motorcade which would take them through a short tour of Stockholm before heading out to Nixon's residence. Nixon had not had the time to study up on Southern culture and saw the tour to be an excellent way of reaching out to his guest. As they took their seats next to each other in the open motorcar Nixon decided to kick off the preliminary discussions.

"Mr. President" Nixon began in English, feeling that such beginning discussions didn't merit a translator. "Again, it is an honor to have you here and I do hope that you enjoy your stay. I shall see to it that you receive everything you desire. I shall be frank though, I do not know much about Southern culture and am eager to learn more...For example, while Latin is the government's language all Porcuian children are multilingual from an early age, taught French, Dutch, Italian, and German besides for simplified Latin. I also hope that our foods and alcohol meet your standards..."

Porcuians were serious enough people, but recognized the value of getting to know their guests, friends, and allies before beginning with serious business. Nixon could only hope he wasn't boring his guest...

After a meeting, the Personal Assistant of President Anatolia noticed him focusing on a news report on a national daily, The Asian Tribune, about the important meeting. Something about the way he was immersed into the news report made the P.A. very suspicious and cruious as to what thoughts where encircling in his mind.

President Littleton chuckled and then noticed the odd look President Nixon had one his face. He was most likely wondering what he had said that was so funny to Littleton and Ted felt the need to explain.

"I hope I caused no offense" said President Littleton, "but my party, the Beer lover's party prides itself for have a taste for alcohol. We're told that our party members are some of the harshest critics of beers and other alcoholic beverages but I promise I will go likely on yours."

Littleton the smiled as he looked out the window of the car at the beautiful city outside.

"I must admit President Nixon that you look over a beautiful city. An your English is damn fine if I may say so. Multilingual children you say, must come in hand when you need citizen in jobs that require a multilingual individual. The South doesn't have a plan such as that in education and the plans we do have differ from state to state given that each state operates it's own education department. There have been strives to bring more unity to the differ department but nothing has come to fruit just yet."

President Littleton then turned his attention complete back to President Nixon.

"I feel that a good amount of relief has just washed over me and should you as well for I know probably about as much of your country that you do mine. To be honest the South hasn't looked outside it's borders with any great interest since it's conception after the fall of the Union and the Second secession of the states. Frankly we didn't need to because at our birth we were border by several other Southern nations that harbored the same values as well did and provide us with strong economic and military partners. However, those days I fear are gone. Those neighbors I speak of fell into anarchy and have now be absorbed into my nation, leaving only one Southern country left and they have been silent for some time."

President Littleton paused.

"That is why I've made this trip and intent to make trips like this one, as many as I can, while I am in office. Democracy in our world has always been a fragile institution. In the past the South was content that they could protect their own interests however, now citizen of the Confederacy have begun to concern themselves with the spread of Democracy on a global scale. They understand that the biggest threat to our country is Communism and Monarchies. They know that without allies we will not be able to stand against the rest of the world. That is why I have taken it upon myself to seek out democratic countries such as your Republic and plant the seeds of diplomacy. My country is very powerful economically, and military an it is my hope to use such a power to defend the free world and help fragile democracy, where they pay sprout, survive against a dictatorship fill world and grow into the strong country the Confederacy has become."

President Littleton then leaned in and placed his hand on President Nixon's shoulder.

"It is my hope Mr. President that by the end of our negotiations both of us will leave with a better understanding of the other, economic agreements that will help both our nations grow, and the promise of embassy exchanges to ensure that future lines of communications are kept between Atlanta and Stockholm."

"I would like that very much President Littleton." Nixon said, smiling brightly in response. "Since the untimely demise of Cerdone Porcu has had to stand against the forces of Communism and Monarchism alone but I am happy to hear that those days are now numbered. I think you shall find Porcu to be a very valuable trade partner, our history is filled with stories of Porcuian merchants and bankers providing funds to people ranging from average people to Kings and Popes....Porcu even financed a couple crusades during the Middle Ages."

The motorcade continued at a good pace down the large brick streets of Stockholm, its style being very European in nature something which President Littleton was no doubt interested in taking note of. As a few police motorcycles lead the way the crowd lined up along the sides of the streets seemed to increase as the motorcade continued into the city center.

"I hope you don't mind standing for a bit Mr. President..." Nixon said looking over to Littleton before standing up in the open motorcar next to his guest and waving cheerfully to the legions of reporters, television cameras, and average citizens. As the motorcade closed in on the Senate building one could clearly make out Porcu's national anthem playing in the background along with the CSA's anthem.

Within five minutes time the motorcade had come to a halt in front of the Senate building, first built in 905 AD with the last renovations being done in 1485, and Nixon guided President Littleton from the motorcar to a podium set up on the Senate steps. Nixon had forewarned that a small speech was tradition for visiting members of state but he promised that it wouldn't take any longer than five minutes. After a quick introduction and acknowledgment the two statesmen could make their way to Nixon's residence. Quickly stepping in front of the podium, President Littleton to his right, Nixon waited for the crowd to quiet down before beginning. After fifteen years as President Nixon had become a master of the memorized and impromptu speech alike.

"My fellow Porcuians it is with great pride that I stand here today to welcome a good friend, a man who stands for the very same fundamental principles that we all here in Porcu do. Hailing from the Confederate States of America I would like to welcome the Honorable President Ted Littleton!" Nixon spouted in Latin, Littleton's translator having to quickly decipher the introduction before Littleton took the stage for his short response.

Straightening his tie he shook President Nixon's hand before taking to the Podium. He had prepared during his flight a small speech, knowing that the opportunity could arise for him to speak in front of the Porcuian people on behalf of his beloved Confederacy. Waving to the crowds of people he waited until the roars died down before speaking. Knowing that most if not all in the crowd were fluent enough in English to understand him, he hoped his deep southern accent would not confuse them.

"May I first say that on behalf of the people of the United Confederate States of America that it is my deepest honor to stand before you today on the steps of your beloved Senate Building, a symbol of democracy for the European Continent, and address you as President of the Confederacy and as a fellow human being who like you, loves democracy and the democratic institution. For years now our two countries have stood alone as light houses to the world. Sending out a guiding light to those nations and people who are ready to throw off the shackles of Imperialism and Totalitarianism in the hopes of building a new future for themselves where freedom and justice reign as supreme powers!"

"Today however, I am pleased to announce that your lonely stand as well as ours is almost at an end. It is my deepest hopes and I know it is of President Nixon as well that, during this week of discussion, our two countries will find in each other the ally they both have been seeking. An that by the end, the Confederacy and the Swiss-Roman Republic will rise together as new partners in the fight to foster, save, and spread the democracy our two countries so dearly love."

At his speech's end the Porcuian people again irrupted in thunderous applause. President Littleton stood back a moment and then called President Nixon to his side. President Nixon, standing only a few steps away came to Littleton's side and the two men joined with arms crossed to each other's back, a sign of the friendship both men hoped to found as they waved to the cheering crowd in front of them.

The thunderous applause from thousands of Swiss-Roman citizens certainly sent a clear message to President Littleton, Porcu was ready to join hands with the Confederate States of America and one could almost feel a sense of growing optimism on the part of the Porcuian people in the audience. Photojournalists continued to take their pictures and television cameras continued to follow the two leaders as they made their way back to the motorcade. President Littleton was temporarily slowed down by the other Swiss-Roman Senators who were gathered behind Nixon and Littleton standing further up the Senate stairs. A few handshakes here and there and Littleton was again on his way. Being ever the one to keep to a schedule Nixon didn't wish for precious discussion time to be taken up by Senators or even adoring citizens and so quickly barked an order to an secret service agent next to him. Immediately, the crowds which had managed to slowly leak through the police barriers were slowly pushed back to allow a good opening again for Littleton. A few more handshakes with the populace and a few more waves were all that Nixon and Littleton managed before making themselves comfortable in the leather seats of the motorcar.

The lead police motorcycles turned on their sirens once again and the motorcade was off, next stop: Nixon's private residence.

It was a relatively short thirty minute drive into the mountainous area outside Stockholm. The Presidental Residence actually was a rebuilt Romanesque villa that had housed the Kings of Porcu during the Middle Ages before the Royal Palace had been built in Stockholm in 1312. Surrounded by luscious Scandinavian forest and the clean, refreshing air of the mountains the Presidental Residence proved to be a welcome resting place for Nixon during the tougher times of his previous terms. With elbow turns a frequent occurrence Nixon hoped that his guest wasn't getting sick due to his possible lack of experience with mountainous driving. The gravel road surrounded by large trees and thick brush eventually gave way to an opening where the Presidential Residence was located.

"Sir, we have arrived..." said the driver as the motorcade came to stop in front of the main steps. "Let me get your door sir!" Quickly hopping out of the car the driver opened the door for the President Littleton first followed by President Nixon.

Beckoning his guest Nixon asked him what he was up to first. "Taking note that you will be spending several days here in Porcu if you are in need of a small break I can oblige you with a drink before we continue with business. Or if you prefer we can take a small walk, there are many paths leading through these mountains all very beautiful if I may say so, and begin our discussions...Please, what is it you would like to do?"

"A drink you say" said President Littleton as his right eyebrow lifted at the invitation for a drink "Well now that sounds mighty fine. Yes sir mighty fine indeed. I do believe I'll accept your invitation and might I say what a beautiful mountain country you have in this part of Porcu. You know we have mountains back home, the Great Smokey mountains as we call them back home. The official Presidential retreat is there, called the Biltmore House. It really is a beautiful house, if you ever come to visit I will have to host you there I think you will appreciate at it as much as I do."

President Littleton began to follow Nixon into his beautiful home.

"You know, if you're not opposed to the idea, I don't mind sitting down to start our discussions over that drink" said President Littleton with a smile. "I found that I do some of my best decision making while having a nice beverage in hand."

"Certainly!" Nixon responded with a large smile over his face. Ever under the careful eye of the secret service who managed to keep their distance Nixon and Littleton made their way into the residence, the doors guarded by two sharply dressed army soldiers who promptly opened the door for the two Presidents. Upon entering a servant immediately came to Nixon's side and after requesting two drinks in Dutch Nixon lead his guest to another room, this one with a grand view of the mountain side. Two armchairs awaited the men and once comfortable the servant came back with two glasses containing Scotch.

"Another perk of keeping the Dutch East India Trading Company tied to Porcu is delicacies such as this!" Nixon said in English raising his glass high in a salute to the Confederate President. The acknowledgment was quickly returned as both men savored the rich drink. "There are all types of drink here Mr. President so please do not be shy in requesting a favorite of yours, chances are that the VOC has stashed a few bottles here. Also, I shall make it a priority that you taste some of Porcu's wine and liquor at some point before your departure. A refined gentleman such as yourself can no doubt appreciate them. Now...Down to business!"

"I am in total agreement with you about setting up strong relations between Porcu and the Confederate States, our world needs more nations like us to join together otherwise we shall not survive. I believe a good starting point would be to knock out a trade agreement before we move on to other things, such as a mutual-defense pact..."

"I could not agree more" said President Littleton after enjoying the good scotch given to him. He had during his time as a Beer Lovers Party member, enjoyed his fair share of scotches from all over the South and even a few from some of the more remote places of the world, but the scotch President Nixon had was by far of a quality he had not had the pleasure before now to enjoy. Trying to stay moderate, Littleton savored the drink instead of downing it in one gulp that many knew he could and did often back home. "If our countries are to get any union off the ground, we must first start with a good trade foundation."

President Littleton took another sip of scotch before going on.

"I don't have of course, any of the statistics in front of me, but as you may know the South is perhaps one of the most prosperous textile, chemical, and agricultural centers in the world. We have an over abundance of food supplies and textile products such as cotton that we can put on the table to offer for trade. More over we also have an large arms, lumber, and banking industry with which to share with the Porcu people. Though it is not as strong as say countries in the Middle East or Russia of Europe, the south also has oil reserves for which we have tapped in the Gulf to trade should you wish to seek such fuels. We have been experimenting for some time with bio fuels but have yet to perfect any such fuel that we'd be prepared to offer."

"In return what the Confederacy needs to most are raw materials such as metals for which we can manufacture steel as well as the materials for technology like coppers. An of course we're open to whatever else the Porcu people are willing to trade. If your government is willing, the Confederacy hopes to agree on trade agreements that are as tariff free as possible."

President Littleton took another sip of his scotch. He had purposely not mentioned the strong and wealthy slave trade that operated in his country for obvious reasons. The Porcu people from what he could tell and what information they had, had no need for slaves for a stake into the slave trade industry. Although Littleton believed this to be a pitty, he respected the Porcu people and their deicisions on such matters and would not seek to push such a topic as others were of more importance in his mind that he'd may have to push for.

"It seems then that you have come to the right place" Nixon responded, finishing off his remaining scotch before setting his glass off to the side on a small table located in between the two armchairs. "Porcu is ideally located on some of Europe's best iron ore fields. Much of Porcu is also rich in natural metals such as copper so should that be a prime concern of yours then Porcu certainly has you covered."

"Porcu also has a large technological sector, producing high quality electronics, machinery and scientific instruments. Oil certainly is something that we lack here in Porcu and although we have made great strides in providing alternative energy sources as well as a topnotch public transportation system, best in the world if you ask me, I would be more than happy to have Porcu purchase its oil from the Confederate States now rather than from despots in the Middle East as our oil need is not outstanding. Should you wish to look into the energy plans Porcu currently has set up, providing energy through several different sources including solar, wind, nuclear, and biofuels then I would be more than happy to provide your assistants with some paper work."

"You have also come to the right place if you're looking for free trade. I firmly believe that the freer the trade the freer the people and so I have managed to pass several Senate resolutions which have essentially wiped out the tariffs for imports into this country. However, such graciousness does not come without a price and as part of any trade agreement I make sure that our trade partner's tariff rates are at least lowered on Swiss-Roman exports. Certainly the materials needed to make clothing are lacking here in Porcu and should the Confederacy see benefit in including excess cotton to an agreement then we would be very happy."

"Also, before I forget, being that the VOC is semi-independent from the Porcuian government I wish to make you aware that you may be contacted at some point, especially following our discussions here this week, by them. Porcu does not care for the business they do as long as it provides a steady flow of tax revenue back to Porcu. Specializing as a diversified global financial services company the VOC also trades all types of services and goods around the world. I'm certain that what we don't officially include in our trade agreement will be sought after by the VOC. I just wanted to give you the "heads up", as they say..."

Littleton finished off his own scotch, placing his glass on the same table as Nixon had place his. Leaning a little forward in his chair now, he was already very pleased with the conversation so far. If it went this well for the remainder of the week, then he saw little that would get in the way of the two countries and a strong international friendship.

"Well as I said" started Littleton "the Confederacy has an over abundance of Cotton, so much so that we literally have store houses on store houses of the stuff mostly sitting there and collecting dust"

The two Presidents chuckled at the idea before Littleton continued.

"We've made strives as seeing to foreign investors in the past few years under the presidency before mine, but we've found little sound investors and the one other country in North America that we trade with has their own stock so imports very little of the stuff from us. Needless to say President Nixon, I think within a months time of trading with the South you too will have more Cotton than you know what to do with."

"Speaking of energy though, perhaps our two nations would best gain from each other if perhaps the trade agreement involved the trade or cooperation between our two governments and their efforts to provide an alternative fuel and power source for our people. As I said, some Confederate companies believe they are seriously close to cracking this global problem but most feel they've hit impasses they don't believe they can get through on their own. Perhaps an exchange of scientists is in order, whereby we seen a few of our boys over here, you send a few of yours over the pond to us, and together we work on the problem. Hell, if I may be so frank, we make lick this problem within out presidencies."

President Littleton then sat back, getting a bit more comfortable in his chair.

"I'll be honest, I don't know much about the VOC. There name hasn't come up in the limited circles the Confederacy trades with but if they're as reasonable as yourself I don't see why we or a company within the country doesn't do a little business with them. Of course, don't be too surprised yourself if by the end of this week, we hash out good relations with our two countries that a few of our business back home don't look for government approvals from yourself to begin investing over here."

"All in all I think it appears that the two of our nations can economically benefit greatly from a trade partnership and I think that good. As democracies around the world as rare today as a $2 Rebel is back home in the Confederacy I think it is important that we help each other out to grow as economically powerful as we can. I think this will be a powerful statement to the dictators and totalitarians in the world that we're here and we're not going anywhere."

"You have an excellent point there Mr. President" Nixon began shifting his weight in his chair a little. "There is so much to be gained from an exchange of scientists and from an joint effort to solve such problems. As I mentioned earlier, Porcu is one of the world's innovators in this particular field. There are already several projects underway in universities across Porcu, all financed by the government, and results have been seen. However, it is never a bad thing to bring in new ideas and should we be lucky enough to preside over such a breakthrough I will buy you dinner!" Nixon concluded with a loud laugh.

Allowing himself to chuckle for a bit Nixon quickly straightened up again. "No, I would have no quarrels with American businesses wishing to expand their services here to Porcu. Both our countries have such a large market that it may prove difficult not to get any business! I'll pass on your feelings to Hans Van Diepen, a good friend of mine who is also the Company's CEO and Grand Duke."

"Your last point was also an important one. Trade agreements are obviously just a first step but even those send a clear message to the tyrants of the world, a message of sound resolve and even sounder belief in the spirit of democracy and liberal progressivism."

Feeling that at least the economics had been taken care of Nixon decided to shift gears a little wishing to move on to another topic, but because he didn't have a set plan of what he wanted to get done he allowed Littleton to set the topic.

"Mr. President, I assume that you wish to bring more than just a trade agreement back to the States so if you are in agreement then I believe we can progress to another topic of discussion..."

"Oh yes I believe we're both on the same page when it comes to trade between our countries" said President Littleton "an there's no sense beating a dead horse as they say back home. Of course I hope to discuss the possibilities of joint military exercises as well as perhaps a joint military defense since as you and I both agree, we're a select few in a world of enemies. Friends and allies must be made or democracies will go the way of the dinosaurs."

"However, if it is not too much of a heat topic I would first like to move towards something that is certainly important to my country and find out from you how receptive your country would be to it. The topic of which I speak of is that of Religion. During the days of the old Union, most of the states that today make up the United Confederates States were known as the bible belt of America and for good reason. Religion is important to my people but we're not a country controlled by it's religious institutions but are instead guided by them."

"We of course practice freedom of religion and a separation of church and state. But of some of us, most of us perhaps, can't argue that many of the decisions we make sometimes rely on our beliefs in our religious practices. I tell you all this President Nixon so you'll understand a bit more of the Confederate culture and see where I am coming from. If you don't mind my questions, where does the Republic stand when it comes to religion, is it deeply invested in it's government or do you practice a separation clause such as ourselves. Are people here free to practice whatever religion they wish and how does the government feel about new religions cropping up in the country?"

Although trying not to seemed a little shocked Nixon couldn't help but adjust himself in his seat again. It certainly wasn't everyday that a Swiss-Roman was questioned about his beliefs and luckily Littleton was only asking about Porcu's governmental policies towards religion.

"Well...I...uh...Porcu has a very long history Mr. President, one that is filled with years of domination by the Church of Genesis City. I am myself a practicing Colognian Catholic but that in no way affects the decisions I make as President of Porcu. As President I must look at my options in dealing with a situation and decide along secular laws, not moral ones, which is the best path to take. Since the foundation of the Republic all the way back in 945 AD Porcuians have maintained a very serious separation of church and state and I have looked to uphold that belief. That of course is not to say that Porcuians are not religious people, it just shows that while they can hold deep personal beliefs they do not allow them to influence their public actions, or at least do not allow it to drive their actions. If so, you'd probably see many more bishops and priests elected to higher offices. Nothing his stopping them from running and in fact a few do but they do not do well. Religion is something to keep to yourself."

"In terms of practicing religion, I think Swiss-Romans are the most privileged people on Earth. Although percentage wise they do not make up a large amount there are many individuals who follow their own religion, Porcu acts as a haven for them. From Buddhism to Satanism to Neo-Druidism any type of religion may be practiced within our borders free of interference from the government. Obviously some people get made fun of and are thrown around a bit but as long as their actions are not illegal or criminal then we see no reason to refrain people from exerting their rights. Freedom of speech is very similiar here in Porcu. As a Porcuian you may say whatever you want about whomever you wish. There are no legal barriers against expressing exactly how you feel, except in the case of yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theater. Safety for others is something to always keep an eye on, however after centuries of these policies no one would dare yell "Fire!" in a movie theater. Chances are they would yell "Fuck Nixon!" in front of the Senate building. Just because someone may become "offended" by what someone else says or does does not justify limiting their god-given rights."

"We here in Porcu pride ourselves on being able to maturely handle more individual responsibility than any other people on Earth. Truly, if you ask most people what the role of government is many will tell you one or a combination of three things: funding for private research projects, national defense, and/or construction of some public works. The idea of government is extremely limited here in Porcu and regard for an individual to express themselves fully without interference is held higher than almost anything else."

Realizing that he had gone on for sometime without taking a breath he decided it was best to slow down the pace of the conversation and take a moment to catch his breath. Calling for his maid Nixon politely asked for another glass of scotch but waited for President Littleton to hop on for another glass as well before continuing...

President Littleton had a refill to his scotch as well, taking a good swig before continuing on with the conversation. He noticed that he had caught President Nixon a bit off guard, it wasn't exactly his intention though he knew that religion in any discussion would be a questionable subject that would either leading to better understanding or a slug fest between the two Presidents. Luckily however, it wasn't so much a question to question the faith of the president or the Porcu people but instead it was Littleton's attempt to see if Porcu would be receptive to the possibility of protestant religions from the Confederacy spreading over into the Republic.

"Well I certainly can respect the Republic's position when it comes to religion and I should make an attempt to clarify myself as I too try to make secular decision whenever possible when it comes the affairs of state. I can confess with some honesty however, that I am not the most religious myself. Sure I attend Sunday service as regularly as a man of my office possibly can but lets face it, sometimes the office of the president requires decisions that are not always align with the beliefs of the church."

President Littleton took another sip of his scotch.

"I asked my question President Nixon not only to understand a bit more of the Porcu culture but also to explore the possibility of the spread of the protestant faith here to the Swiss-Roman Republic. You see when in the Confederacy have found, with no intention on my part to insult your religion or any other, that the Protestant faiths are the most receptive to the ideals of democracy and freedom. No other faith in the world is headed by a council of priest besides the Protestant faith. Catholics have the Pope, the Orthodox have patriarch, most of which look towards one as their leader, Muslims have the Caliph, etc.etc."

"Now I'm in no way trying to dictate the internal policies of the Porcu people. Lord knows if someone came over to the Confederacy and try to do so, I for one know for a fact the citizens of my country would run the son of a gun out with their shotguns on their hips. What I am asking is if it is possible that churches have the possibility of Protestant churches coming over and trying to introduce the faith to anyone here that may wish to convert. Sure the Confederacy would love to see the Swiss-Roman Republic a bastion of the Protestant faith in Europe but we're no dictatorship, we'd never look to force your people to convert. However, before I left a multitude of churches did send me letters to see if I'd talk with you on this subject to see if your government would allow such establishments in your country."

Littleton took another sip from his scotch, finding that he had through the course of his little speech, drank his scotch dry. Ordering another, he knew personally that he'd like to see the Porcu people become protestant. As a mostly protestant nation the Confederacy was suspicious of Catholic nations, Colognian or Genesian, given their loyalties to their Popes. In their mind they could figure out how a country could call themselves a democracy and yet still see their people bow down to a monarch-like figure. Still the President knew he was in no position to demand a change and to do anything towards such a demand would seriously hurt any relations they hoped to establish with any democratic nation.

"I personally have nothing against those Protestants wishing to come here and set up their churches and faith groups so long as they follow Porcu's laws and proceedings. Tell me Mr. President, how would your fellow Protestants feel about prostitution or gambling? How about same sex marriage? The truth is that several decades ago Porcu struggled a little bit with Islam or at least its fundamentalist groups. We experienced a rapid increase in homicides particularly among people Islam considers bastards of the faith. Although the state never outlawed Islam it made it perfectly clear that freedom of religion did not allow a person to break secular laws using religion as a defense. In our courts religion is of no importance, if you break a law you shall pay for your crime. I'm not sure if you're aware of what is called "honor killings" but we also had to deal with that for sometime."

"I believe I can speak on a little more than just my behalf when I say that although I find prostitution slightly deplorable, as I do with several other things, and I will not ever engage in those activities but I will not deny the same opportunity to another individual who does wish to partake in those types of extracurriculars. If he is a hard working taxpayer then he is entitled to the freedoms that everyone else enjoys. Again, religion for Porcuians is something to guild your individual life not to use as an excuse to push socially conservative or socially liberal policies. I have noted all too often in my travels to other nations that religion has been used as merely a vehicle to push reforms that look to constrain an individual's rights. A vast majority of Porcuians will tell you that because they don't approve of a certain thing they personally will not indulge themselves but will not look stop another person from indulging themselves."

"To reiterate, I have no problems with members of the Protestant faith coming here to Porcu and looking to live peacefully among the populace converting who they are able to, but as soon as they begin to look to curb the rights proved by society then I'm afraid that they will have to go. This is not a threat. I just wished to provide a direct and honest answer. I hope I have not offended you but my answer is firm..."

"Not at all" said Little " I asked a question, believing I deserved a truthful answer and you delivered. If anything, I am honored to know that you and your government are as committed to good, truthful, and strong relations between our two countries as we are and an honest answer of that nature only goes to prove it. Now as I said, I am not a perfect man nor have I ever pretended to be. Though I consider myself a Christian, I know I am not an ideal model of the Christian faith, failing in many areas others succeed in with little difficulty"

He held up his glass of whiskey, an example of one of his vices. He took a drink and then continued on.

"Now I cannot speak for the entire Protestant faith, nor do I believe I know enough about anyone denomination of Protestantism to say for sure, but I can guarantee this much. We in the South are of equal mind to you and your people here in Porcu when it comes to an individuals freedom. Now I can't say honestly that there aren't groups out there that don't push for conservative values in government decision, but overall our government operates on the same idea as yours, feeling that no man should be denied something on the basis that his neighbor feels it should be outlawed. "

"Now as I said, we do have groups in the Confederacy who do, with some gusto try to do just that. Most prominently is the religious minded political party that has held good success in our more religiously minded states. But given that our system allows for the individual state to rule in favor of their majority, laws remain community specific. Therefore though one state may outlaw many of the extracurricular activities you just mentioned, another may not. It all depends on the community and how the community feels. With this system in place we've found that those who don't like their system, simply move to a state that is more favorable to their beliefs."

"It's not a perfect system, but it works for us and it works well." President Littleton paused to look at his watch. He found he had to blink a few times to adjust his eyes to see the time. It was getting a bit late, and he found that he realized the trip had taken a bit more out of him than he imaged. "I say President Nixon, how's about you and I ending our discussion for today. I feel that the trip here took a bit more out of me than I had first realized. If you don't mind I'd like to see to getting some dinner and then perhaps retiring for tonight. If of course that works within your plans for the evening."

Nixon nodded in approval, cocking his head back to finish the strong scotch he and his guest had thoroughly enjoyed. The sun was beginning to set and as Nixon and Littleton made their way out of the room they had been in for sometime Nixon was sure to mention where Littleton could see a fantastic sunset.

"I'll advise the cooks that we'll have dinner in three hours time. That should give you plenty of time to rest, shower, and get used to the time change before having dinner. I'm not sure what we'll be having but I hope that your Southern taste buds will approve." Nixon said concluding their conversation for now.

================================================

- Approximately 4.5 Hours Later -

Dinner had been splendid, even by Nixon's standards. Despite being born in the former Canton Rouge years of living in Porcu had exposed Nixon to foods he could only have dreamed of before. French, German, Italian, Dutch, and Scandinavian dishes had over the years been mixed and combined together creating the modern Porcuian cuisine. This evening's dish had been "Lapin a La Cocotte", a traditional Porcuian rabbit stew and although Nixon had been lucky enough to eat it on several other occasions the Presidential cooks had truely outdone themselves; he certainly was proud of their efforts.

All major diplomats on both sides were gathered around a large table and to conclude the evening Nixon wished to propose a toast. After waiting for almost everyone to finish their desserts Nixon ordered for everyone's wine glasses to be filled again and then stood.

"I believe that I speak not only for myself but also for President Littleton when I say that I truely believe that today was just the first step on the path towards a bright and illustrious future for both our nations. May the rest of your visit Mr. President prove to be as good as today...Peace to you all!"

The Porcuians gathered around the table all gave an enthusiastic cheer, although by the Americans' standards it probably sounded more like a collective grunt of approval. With that the night concluded peacefully and with all the wine drunken at dinner everyone was guaranteed a good night's sleep.

The dinner he was given was truly something to write home about and he had had enough wine afterwards to fill many large barrels. He slept very comfortable in the state room provided for him in the President's home. When he awoke the next morning, he took a long shower to wash away the night's excess and then went down for Breakfast.

President Nixon was of course already at the table reading a local news paper when he rose and greet Littleton. The two then sat down and had a traditional Procu breakfast which was also a delight for Littleton. Not the eggs, grits, sausage and bacon he was used to back home in the Confederacy, but again something worth telling the folks back home about when he returned.

When the two men finished, Littleton turned to Nixon and said "How about that walk you offered yesterday. I feel that with such a large breakfast eaten it might be best if I took an hour or so to walk it off." The two men enjoyed a hearty laugh and then Nixon proceeded to show Littleton the way out. While beginning their walk towards the door Littleton decided to break the ice on what could be the most important topic of their week's discussion.

"So President Nixon, in all honesty where would you like to see our two nations when it comes agreements on a military level?"

Nixon held the door open for his newfound friend when Littleton asked him about a potential military agreement.

"To be perfectly honest, I had no specific interest in setting up anything more than a mutual defense pact between our two countries but after our discussions the other day I do believe that something much more substantial may be in the works. I do not know if you read about Porcu's military during your flight over but the Swiss-Roman Security Force, while relatively small compared to other European and world militaries, is very well trained and armed. Please tell me exactly what is on your mind and we'll work together to get some good results. I am an open man Mr. President and always willing to discuss..."

"Well I do believe" said President Littleton as the two began their stroll "that a mutual defense pact between our two countries should first and foremost come with a clause whereby our countries are obligated to help one another. Now I mean this as no disrespect to you and your government but lets face it. I for one am limited to a two four-year term time limit and I am nearing the end of my first term. On the same note, though I don't believe your government instills term limits, there is no guarantee that you'll win the next election. I don't feel it would be productive to have our country made to help one another especially when there is no guarantee that our governments will always agree with each other's leaders."

"So I think a clause whereby our governments have the option of not aiding each other militarily is a more sound decision. Now when it comes to the details of an agreement between our countries I know for certain that the Confederacy would like to see agreements whereby our military comes together for joint exercises. I think we can only strengthen our own militarises more by bringing them together every year or so and sharing information on training and tactics."

Littleton paused a bit as they continued down the outside path.

"Though certainly both our government, with no disrespect meant to either, will want to keep somethings secret, somethings classified. That being said, I do believe that an agreement should also include the exchange of information where possible, allowing both our militarises to be as up to date as possible. Since lets face it, in this day and again as it was a hundred or even a thousand years ago, information is still the greatest weapon an army can possess. "

"Finally the Confederacy believes that it would be beneficial to both countries if both governments are allowed to operation a military installation within the other's country. Now I can understand concerns that may come when introducing such an idea to the rest of your government as concern will certainly pop up back home. However, if we truly wish for both our militarises to prosper through cooperation, what better way than to be there within the homeland of your ally. Not only that but these installations will provide a true statement to the rest of world. They'll show that we democracies are here for one another and that we will stand united against the threat of totalitarianism and Monarchism."

"Of course for the Confederacy this will also mean an important port for us in Europe. You see President Nixon, we have no oversea possession as we've always operated a foreign policy strictly against colonialism. A port military installation in Porcu would be a refueling point for our Atlantic fleet as it makes it's patrol as well as a launching ground for a Pacific fleet. In return of course, the Confederacy is more than willing to offer to Porcu military a port military installation along our coastline as well, perhaps in the Gulf of Mexico, or along our Atlantic coast."

"However, if your government is completely opposed to the idea, the Confederacy will not press this issue. More than anything we hope for unity between our to governments and if that means dropping an idea or two that we previously had then we are more than willing to do so."

"I personally do not have anything against your proposals, especially those dealing with joint military exercises, and military bases, and do see your point regarding a clause containing words that state that our governments are not obligated to assist each other. However, I am not so sure that such actions will be widely accepted even among members of my party. Also, in terms of military bases being set up on Swiss-Roman territory were your military commanders looking at setting up bases in all of Porcu's protectorates as well as Porcu or only in certain ones? I must let you know that Porcu gives its protectorates a lot of freedom in choosing their own course of action and so while I may support such a move your government will have to talk to the Governor of that particular protectorate, as the decision is out of my hands."

"I don't think that a military installation in your territory is necessary from our point of view. Swiss-Roman Brasilias is Porcu's front line in North America and has worked perfectly so far. How would you feel about paying a yearly tribute in exchange for military installations in Porcu and possibly in the protectorates as well?"

"In terms of joint military exercises I know that the SRSF is planning on conducting several naval exercises in two months time and should it meet to your approval we can immediately begin to have our military forces cooperate and trade information. The Swiss-Roman Security Force, like I mentioned before, may not be large but is highly advanced both in terms of technology and training and certainly could benefit immensely from such a joint exercise."
