My friend just called me and told me Russia invaded Georgia and while we where on the phone i found this bit of info for those who haven't heard yet

August 8, 2008 After weeks of tension and low-level clashes Georgia says it has taken control of the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali. Russia sends reinforcements into the territory, saying Georgian attacks killed more than 10 of its peacekeepers. Russian warplanes also reportedly bomb Georgian targets.

My buddy Waffles and I decided to resort to... building a house of crack and store it with drugs, we plan not to be in the east coast of the united states, but we do plan on getting really really really high... crack house party for everyone!!! If you don't die you can come.

Where is Joe Staal when you need him??

I told Don this morning that Georgia and Russia were at war - he called his sister in Atlanta to check on her.

Oh god... if Iran, Saudia Arabia, Azerbaijan and and some of the other surrounding countries would decide to "liberate" Georgia from Russia... life would be so much more hilarious.

So you know, couldn't Russia just be bullying Georgia right now just to show them that they can? I mean, couldn't this lead to Russia having more influence over Caspian oil reserves?

You know, just sayin'...

Additionally, Russia may be trying to tell Georgia that trying to join the Western sphere and leave the Russian sphere is a bad longterm strategy for a country in its position... which it is.

I was wondering when this was going to happen. Ossetians must be celebrating to finally be out from under Georgia's thumb and back with their bros in North Ossetia. Now just waiting for Abhkazia to make their move.

Shame that the third breakaway province is no longer struggling against Tblisi.

No. Only the UK, the US, the Russian Federation, France (WTF?), Pakistan, India, and Israel (allegedly) have nukes. Georgia has the benefit of being the ancestral home of my family and...Stalin's ghost. Other than that, they got nada.

I agree with RD. Also, the peace conference has to be in Delhi...and there has to be a military coup in India. And then Russia needs to join the EU. Yeah. And then there needs to be a war between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. Yes.

Edit: Also, your coping mechanism shows you to be a dumbass.

So... uh... whether or not Georgia was in the wrong... is anyone else worried about a nuclear warmachine that's had steadily deterioating relations with the US going to war with one of it's allies?

I mean... logic kinda says that this won't escalate. That Russia's made their point and diplomacy will have this wrapped up within the week. But then, they said the same thing about both world wars...

Well, thankfully we all haven't fast-tracked Georgia into NATO like people over here were actually advocating trying to do...

But, I'm actually not as worried as I expected to be. I hope this will drive home to our politicians here how stupid allying with little countries on Russia's border actually is. I once read an article which had a great line on this subject. I don't remember the exact quote, but I'll paraphrase it to something like "Small countries on Russia's borders are independent by Russia's sufferance."

How so? India has a very professional military IRL. They're pretty much always on alert because of the threat Pakistan has posed in the past, and while they wouldn't be able to invade China, they sure as hell could repel an invasion

Ghost Recon begins in 2008, with civil unrest in Russia. Ultra-nationalists have seized power in Moscow, with plans to rebuild the Iron Curtain. Their first step is clandestine support of rebel factions in Georgia and the Baltic States. This is where the Ghosts come in: to silence the rebellion. Armed with some of the most advanced weaponry in the world, the soldiers of the Ghost Recon force are covertly inserted into Eastern Europe and given specific missions to curtail the rebel actions and overthrow their benefactors.

During the first few missions of the game, the Ghosts battle South Ossetian rebel forces from the north of Georgia, who are harassing the legitimate government and its allies. The Ghosts fight in the forests, on farms, and in villages while assisting their NATO allies in fighting the enemy. Unfortunately, the Russian government complains to the United Nations that the Americans have interfered in their affairs, and eventually they send in their army to aid the South Ossetian rebels. The U.S. cannot hope to stop the Russian Army from invading Georgia, so the Ghosts slow down the invading forces so that their allies can evacuate. Eventually, the Ghosts are all that's left of the U.S. forces in Georgia, and they evacuate by SH-60 Seahawk helicopter on the rooftop of the American Embassy in T'bilisi, just barely avoiding the Russian forces. The Georgian government flees to Geneva and sets up a government-in-exile. Sadly, with the fall of T'bilisi, Georgia surrenders and is forcefully incorporated into the RDU.

If you go back a few generations, I'm Georgian. In fact, my great-great grandmother grew up in the same town as Stalin (Gori), and in fact knew him. In addition to this, I am American. I have no reason to sympathize with the Russians (well...actually...maybe some Georgian pogroms might be reason to...). But-this is completely Georgia's fault. Completely and utterly Georgia's fault. Their President is an idiot.
