IIRC, the Daily Mail is a tabloid; is that right? And did this actually happen? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1031784/Schoolboys-punished-detention-refusing-kneel-pray-Allah.html |

It happened http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/feedarticle/7631043 The teacher was "disciplined"... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/2264139/Teacher-suspended-for-'punishing-children-who-did-not-pray-to-Allah'.html Personally I would've favored mob violence against Islam in the cities and industrial towns over this incident. That's a class action lawsuit of unimaginable proportions if I as a teacher dared force a child to mimic a religious ceremony. As part of my curriculum, the State of Mississippi requires exposure to the major world religions in 7th grade World History. While I can teach what a devout Moslem is supposed to do, I would never deomonstrate it. Simply put...lawsuit. You are teaching religion or imposing religious beliefs on my child. There is a neighboring school district to mine that is involved in a lawsuit dealing with religion in the classroom, and so far it doesn't look too good for the teacher involved. |

Nothing wrong with teaching religion... it is however morally wrong to teach Islam. |

TC: How can it be morally wrong to teach Islam? I have nothing against the teaching of a religion from an objective point of view, but the way the legal system is set up; we walk a fine line between exposing and "teaching" religion. If you cross it and get busted, it is you who will pay the price. |

Islam is an evil force in the wrong hands, just like any other religion or ideology. As for this incident, it's a complete smack in the face to freedom of religion. This teacher should be fined and fired. Edited by Hastine, Jul 9 2008, 01:35 AM.

And in other news, the Middle East is in an uproar...this time, young blogger named Tristan da Cunha referred to Islam as "an evil force". Here's Katie Kuric with the latest. Thanks. I am reporting live from Saudi Arabia and currently they are buring flags bearing the image of Tristan da Cunha. There are also reports of mass rape, murder, and computer smashing to compliment the already horrid sand storm in this desolate, but oil rich dump. Local cleric has said that "Tristan da Cunha will endure a jihad". He has called upon the faithful to purge the "evil force" with TC. Back to you in your air condition studios! But Vespery, you are correct. Any religion can be perverted if placed into the wrong hands and the teacher should have been fired for that. But that is in England, not the US; currently American schools are trying to adopt the model France has - secular state. As a teacher, I have take extreme caution when wearing my crucifix or praying during my planning period. I am a government employee and a student could easily say I am teaching my religion on him by practicing my faith in a public setting, government property. It is a VERY screwed up court order as it stands now, imagine what it will be like tommorrow! |

I had absolutely no idea that this had occured. And yes, the Daily Mail is a very right wing, reactionary and racist/sexist/homophobic paper. You shouldn't read it. |

Ok you're really asking two questions here... The Daily Mail is - by definition - a tabloid. However, tabloid is a misleading term. There is a high level of political bias in it's content and wording but the Mail, the Guardian, the Independant (wut?) and the Express are the most reliable of the tabloid papers. The Mail are definately a creditable news source - so long as you know their biases and can compensate for them. I'm not saying take it word for word - they're a little sensationalist - but they don't make this stuff up, and they don't make things up. If you want news then the Telegraph and the Times are the two news sources that I would bank on for the facts with the Sun for the common man's view (the Sun is a tab' through and through). Sun, Sport and Star - the three S'es. These are the British Tabloids. The rule of thumb is that crediable papers have black title fonts and the unreliable ones have red titles. After that... It is allowed in the UK to demonstrate religious practices. We do not have the written seperation of church and state the US does. The Queen is still (technically) head of the Church. It is, obviously, not allowed to force these practices on kids in class. 'Course, Britfag kids are little sh*tes. I don't know this story, but I imagine it went down like this: Enthusiatic white newly qualified teacher: "Ok kids now let's see how muslims pray! Yay! But instead of just showing you, let's try it together! Kinestic learners learn by doing! I'm making the lesson interesting! YAY!" Little shite: "F*** you faggot! I aint peeing to no muz-limb arsehole!" Teacher: "You'll stop being disruptive and take part in the lesson or it's detention." Shite: "Yeah, but, no but youcantgivemedetentionfornotpreeying that is lieke soooo unfair! And yeah, but inevawantedtoprayanywayandthatislike well a breach of mah human rights! Do I look bovvered? Are you Allah's bum-chum? Are you his bum chum? Are you a bummer? Are you giving me detention so you can bum me? You're a rude mother f***er. But yer real cute though, I'd like to go down on you, suck on you. Line up three other guys and make out like a circus seal! Ahh! f***in' faggot. I hate guys. I LOVE WOMEN!" |
