Lt. Baskin surveyed his troops to see that although damage had been done by the surprise attack, it wasn't costly to their efforts. Taking cover in ditches, and building that were more like rumble monuments to what once stood there, Hegemon forces took positions and began to open fire. With debris all around the tanks and artillery pieces could not move in for closer shots, having to instead take outward positions as they opened fire.

Though there wasn't much of an urban site left of the poor city, it was still by all definitions an urban battle between the two forces. Each claimed a block and was bound an determined to keep the other from advancing. This was more so the case for the Ulganians as they were put, by Hegemon forces, on the defensive end than that of the offensive.

Standing their ground and protecting the street block of Kane that they controlled was imperative if they were going to come out victorious and truly cement their nation's name among world powers. Unluckily for them however, was the fact that this was not the first urban battle Hegemon forces had fought.

Years ago, during the gold years of Catholic Europe, the Hegemony which was then a Monarchy pledged and sent soldiers to the crusade against Damascus and the Roman Empire. Unlike Kane, Damascus was whole when the Catholics got there though by the end of the day, the Orthodox capital of the world was not the jewel of the east that it had been.

Though treachery would lead to the Africans to believe the crusades a failure, they learned so much from that war. It was passed down through the military and kept unchanged even when their country began to evolve into the Hegemony it was now. With such training now a part of the High Guard's rituals, this battle would by no means be a new experience for them.

Taking high ground when they could, Hegemon snipers began to pick off whatever Ulganian soldier that was unfortunate enough to get noticed. At the same time, small teams of no more than 5 men began to trek through the city, testing how far they could get and surprising whomever they could along the way.

-------------------------------------------

General Rossetto-Cipriani knew that the ashes and skeletal remains found in the village was his men's work. They had cleansed the village of evil, it was their duty after all. Having found captain Barnard's body, a small helicopter was dispatched. It soon arrived and took the body back to base camp where it would then be transported to a lager, and more heavily armed helicopter to be sent back to the Hegemony.

Allowing the Archbishop the time to properly cross examine the remaining villagers he deemed them worth Catholics and told the General that they could move on.

"Good" said the General "this city of Kane is only a few hours from our position and I'd like to get there before the fighting is start or at the very least before it is over"

Nodding to the General the archbishop returned to his seat in the General's jeep. The General gave the order and had his war machine running again.

OOC: Eh… things are getting a little out of order from what I was hoping for. So, I’m going to just post what I was planning on getting up anyway.

IC:

Earlier, before Hegemon forces had reached Kane

Roberts, who had returned from his meeting with Marcus Abbot earlier that morning, sat in his office in Serpentine.

“We’ve reached a new point, sir,” an aid said to Everlet Roberts. “We need to begin rebuilding the government.”

Roberts, who had taken the reigns of Supreme Chancellor not long ago, knew it was true but was still trying to keep the military from rebelling again. “What can I even do right now? As long as there are Catholics who want sovereignty and me dead then what’s the use? It will just result in more people dying!” he said, slamming his hand on the table.

Almost on cue, Admiral Mustang, General Mateljan, and a group of other top military brass entered his office. “There is someone else, you know,” Mustang said.

“Oh, and who is that? One of you?” Roberts said, sinking his elbow onto his desk.

“No, as tempting as that would be, I doubt any of us are really up to the task. However,” Mustang said raising an arm into the air, “there is one among our ranks, within the fold of Serpentine and already close to us who would be perfect for taking the reigns of the nation. There is, however one issue that would be a stumbling block.”

“If you think he’s worth it, then I’m sure we can work around it,” Roberts said.

“The young man, while extremely well versed in politics, procedure, logic, and has all the qualities of a great leader is none other than the Catholic nephew of Roland Valentine. While being perfect for the position, it would reshape this country into, what could be for better or worse, a Monarchy.”

Everlet slowly stood. “The nephew of the Great Uniter, eh? This sounds promising, and would naturally make the Catholics happy. But… would he be able to stop Hegemon forces from crafting their own government here?”

“It would be simple,” a voice said from behind the military officials. As they stepped aside, the twenty-three year old nephew of Roland Valentine, Tres Valentine stepped forward and addressed Everlet directly. “Vincent Drakus, myself, and a few other Catholics could be dispersed in the upper echelons of the government, holding a fair amount of the country’s political might, while the general government remains intact.”

“So, you would have me compromise to that point?” Everlet said, fearing retaliation from other Ministry members.

“No. If anything, the Catholic position would technically be weakened. You see, I would rule like a Supreme Chancellor should rule, and not by God’s will. While I would keep my faith in mind, it would not hamper me in the way it has Mistress Trensk, or Chancellor Whitmore from the Hegemony.”

“I think we may have something here. We have many preparations to see too, and much to do before we can make any formal announcement. Hinting at it to the press won’t be too bad I suppose, seeing as it would take the general level of shock out of the matter.”

Tres Valentine approached Everlet’s desk. “I’m glad this meeting has worked to everyone’s favor then,” he said as the two shook hands. “I’m glad I have your supports, as well as the military’s support. Having one and not the other would have been… burdensome,” Tres said with a glint in his eye.

As the group left, Everlet reflected on those last words. He would support the nephew of Roland Valentine, but what would the cost to his country be?

Several Hours Later

Tres Valentine stood on the bridge of the carrier Valentine. He enjoyed the vessel that had been named after his passed on Uncle, but not for his namesake but for its functionality. Since the war with Menhad, it has sustained heavy damage during the fiercest fighting in the Indian Ocean; however it never had to leave the fray. Loaded with cannons, 2 catapults for fighters, missile launchers, Gatling guns, thick armor plating, AA guns, torpedo launchers, and very sophisticated navigational systems it still had its uses even after all its planes shot down and torpedoes spent. While still undergoing repairs, the vessel had remained functional in intelligence gathering uses.

Making the Valentine his unofficial home, Tres had started making moves from that position to cement his name in Ulganian history. The successor of his uncle would be suitable, and the means humble enough. A coup to throw the country into chaos by disenfranchised Catholics. When the plan had been hatched he felt as though it would be a simple matter of taking the reigns and gaining popularity by the establishment. His rise to power would, of course be unorthodox but Ulgania as a state was still experimenting with politics. The people would always be there, it was just trying to figure out how to rule those people.

Tres felt as though he would be the best choice, so he took some baby steps before sprinting for victory. Several conversations with Marcy Trensk and himself had taken place during the war with Menhad. She felt like a tool, and that the political-fueled war against Menhad had become popular in their country because of the reasoning overseas for it. Had a Catholic government been in power, they argued then the war would have never occurred, and the heathens occupying the cradle of humanity, the Garden of Eden would have seen death on their doorstep much more swiftly.

It took some prodding, but Tres sewed the seeds of dissent in her mind, and she created the means, the vehicle of which he would seize power. However, two factors were needling his mind. The first being Everlet Roberts, a man who had jumped into action without hesitation and fought for their country. The second being an invasion from the South to destroy what Trensk had gotten away with. Tres Valentine had every motive to destroy her pocket of Neo-Genesianism the moment he had the legitimate means, but the Hegemony had acted first. Now, Tres was being given an unexpected gift.

There would be another way into the hearts and minds of Ulgania: saving them.

He suspected that even though there was a very direct motive to this attack, or crusade as the African media had been calling it Tres could be the country’s guardian angel by pulling a victory out of ruin, by showing Ulgania’s valor in a time when it would desperately need it. How would he do this? By forcing the fight to go to Serpentine.

Roberts wanted the stopping point for the invasion to be Kane. The bombed out shell of a once beautiful city would do wonders as a line of defense. No, that would not work for Tres though. For all intents and purposes Tres would be able to rally the military, and crush the Hegemony the moment they entered Ulgania’s borders. He could muster the willpower, determination, and logistics necessary to destroy any army that dared cross into what was now his country. However, he did not want to do that. It would make much more sense for the country to remain split, and for them to rally at the last minute and slaughter the invaders. It was the sensible thing to do, and it would all be accomplished under the guidance and careful, meticulous planning of Chancellor Tres Valentine.

Exactly how he would be pulling off this victory was still working its way around Tres’ mind. He stood stock still on the bridge of the Valentine as he contemplated things, wordlessly watching a screen showing the location of Ulganian forces, their strengths, Hegemon forces, and their strengths, all on an expanded map of the Hegemony and Ulgania. The coming days, and weeks would be costly. The Hegemony might be able to pull off all of their military objectives given the circumstances Tres was creating, but he would get the political victory in Ulgania, and that’s what really counted to him.

Let the Hegemony have their fun. They’ll be defeated military in the end, they’ll leave, and I’ll have my victory.

His only remaining obstacles were Roberts, Trensk, and the Hegemony.

Later, in Kane

Satellite communications had been reestablished throughout Ulgania, and just in time for Everlet. He had been able to rally a large force to move into Kane, but things had grown difficult since Tres had made his appearance. All the same, he was still able to begin a counter-attack in Kane.

The assembled force was still making its way to the city, and Roberts could only hope that the reserve forces already in place were sufficient to hold ground for at least another few hours. Hegemon forces could hardly batter the city, but the inroads being made were costly. One advantage Everlet was able to muster up was an entire Wing of PA-11 fighters, and PA-12 Fighter-Bombers (OOC: about 300 planes, all multirole… I’ll give more info on stats if you’d like). Unlike the fight over Serpentine, sorties were being overseen with the country’s navigational array. Squadrons of planes flew by overhead, and began to pick off tanks and general artillery pieces whenever spotted. Time was being bought for now, but the real fight would start once the divisions of mechanized infantry, infantry, and special forces pushed their way into the city.

OOC: For all intents and purposes, these are the same soldiers that fought against Menhad not too long ago. They’re battle-hardened and determined to defend their country so the only real IC advantage I think you’ll have is numbers. It’s like 40,000 special forces, 40,000 mechanized infantry, and 100,000 general infantry that’ll converge, and 25% of my armored forces + my missile launching vehicles.

Port Commendia

"Thank you for coming Mr. Roberts I do hope that this horrible conflict can be resolved as soon as possible." Said Abbot before sticking out his hand for one final handshake.

"As do I Mr. Abbot, thank you for your hospitality today" Roberts said while taking Abbot's hand and giving a good firm shake.

With that done Roberts climbed into his black SUV, and with a large convoy, passed through the first checkpoint out of the Port-City.
The air was stifling on this humid afternoon; much as it always was, and the hustle and bustle of the Curia made it all the more worse for Abbot.
Soon the last SUV had passed through the check point and Abbot took out a white cloth to wipe off the Accumulation of sweat that had developed on his forehead.
Before long Abbot was at work again, checking supply rationing, vehicle status, barrack housing and so on and so forth.
The work was not uncommon for Abbot, this is how most of his days were spent back in Bakal only less...deadly.
Soon Abbot had come to his last assignment, tactical deployment.
Abbot began his way up the stairs to the Command and Control of the base.
He reached the door after a short climb up the wooden steps and opened the door to the tower.
The air-conditioning hit him like a title wave, though even though the AC was on full blast it seemed as though everyone in the room was still sweating as much as they would out side.
Maybe it was the stress of command or the unbearable sunlight, whatever it was Abbot didn't care.
Abbot found his head Centurion giving commands and pointing out locations on small maps for some of the lesser officers.

"Hail Titus" Abbot said in a completely unmotivated tone

The Centurion perked his head up. "Hail Titus!" shouted the Centurion while giving the Roman salute.

Abbot rolled his eyes, Imperial fanatical annoyed him.

"what do we have?" asked Titus

"We have 30,000 troopers ready for Combat, sir!"

"Save me the army crap Commander, you may be highest in rank but this is black ops which means its my command and were going to do things my way."

The Centurions gaze never broke from Abbot.

Abbot turned his head back to the map that was located on the table in front of him.

anyway I believe it is time we began deploying our troops in Serpentine, they would serve their role best there as playing into a defense of the city. Send a few priests with them too I want to try to indoctri-”

Suddenly a nervous leftentnet handed Abbot a piece of paper.
Abbot had to put on his glases to read it

Hegemon forces crossed border. Attack on Kane immanent.

The telegram was signed General Mateljan

Abbot looked nervous

“is there something wrong sir?” asked the Centurion

“Hegemon forces are driving towards Kane.”

The trooper was surprised

“Do you mean for us to attack sir?” asked the Centurion

Abbot looked at the Trooper distantly

“No, were going to reinforce Kane. Begin making preparations to move out, I want at least 50,000 troopers on the field at Kane.”

With that the Centurion saluted and walked away to make ready his troops.

“Were going to meet the Hegemon host with force”

Fighting in Kane was tough, with the Hegemony taking little ground but on the same token, it wasn't losing much ground either. Street fighting was dangerous and snipers could pick you off from the rooftops or you could turn one wrong corner and been in a hive of enemy troops. Lt. Baskin was well versed in the text books of this sort of fighting, it was a battlefield he was trained to understand.

Still there is only so much training a soldier can do, only true experience can harden the soldier and make them a master. The Hegemony was holding it's ground though and making some advances on the Ulganian lines, even if they were small compared to the scope of the city. What made their job difficult was the air support they had called in which was now picking off several of the tanks and artillery pieces that they had brought with them.

"We need some of our own in the air." he said to his aid

"Sir, shall I radio for air support?"

"Do it, it'll take sometime to get here but it's better than trying to just ride out the storm"

"Yes Sir" said the aid as he got on his radio and order in the attack to base camp. Base camp then sent the order back over the border to the Hegemony. Though the Hegemony was hoping to keep it a primarily ground campaign they had their navy and air forces on high alert for just such orders. Pilots at the nearest air bases along the border were strapped in and order tot he sky.

In all it was a total force of some 200 fighters of the JAS 39 Gripen
and T-45 Goshawk designs. They were a smaller force than the Ulganian fighters yes, but they were an older air force with the experience of time honored training on their side. They might not completely defeat the enemy but they'd keep the enemy busy, leaving the ground units to preform their duty without air interruption. They would arrive within the hour.

Ulganian troops, hardened by determination and from operations in Menhad, and in years previous to unification, against themselves had come to know urban warfare. However, while fighting against the Hegemon forces could not be the immovable object needed against the unstoppable force. While perfectly succinct in tactical urban warfare, the soldiers and commanders on the ground were unable to hold their ground. The only real advancements were made by the Special Forces divisions that had entered the city.

Within these divisions were groups of combat engineers who made advancement of the Hegemon forces impossible. While it would keep Ulganians from moving, their operations were enough to force Hegemon forces into finding alternate route after alternate route, making them eventually filter into extremely dangerous territories ridden with snipers and trip mines.

None of the fighting was honorable, and the city, already laid to waste by Marcy Trensk orders was nothing more than a series of obstacles and death traps for either side. Everything in the city made the fighting slow going, but people were dying all the same. The disorganized movements on both sides, forced by the expanse of ruins caused plans to change all the time made movements nearly impossible. A block could be held securely by no more than two or three soldiers with a sniper above them for a day, but a force of twenty or thirty Hegemon soldiers moving to strike a target could overwhelm them with almost no notice. Then, after fighting in a different part of the street Ulganians could return to that block.

Nothing was definite in that city, except one thing: Ulganians were being outnumbered. Holding their ground valiantly all over the city, after time they were becoming isolated, outnumbered, and were running low on resources. Ammunition and food were taken from any dead soldier from both sides by Ulganians. The reprieve the air force gave them was gone within hours of it starting as aerial counterattacks ensued, making the fighting that much more painful and difficult on the ground.

For Everlet, the line of defense he had been counting on was evaporating before him. He had sent over a hundred thousand Ulganians to their deaths it seemed, and for what? As the order to retreat was issued in Kane, Everlet, as well as the government made to evacuate to the fortress of Desert Command once again. He knew safety could be assured out there, and that considering the narrow-mindedness of Tres the outcome of Kane meant nothing. He would seek a military or political victory in Serpentine, no matter what the cost was. To Everlet, this gave him perfect reason to do to him what Tres had done earlier.

Before leaving Serpentine, Everlet contacted several generals and field commanders that were supposed to oversee operations in Serpentine, and ordered them to redeploy to Desert Command. Roberts refused to let Tres Valentine turn the city his uncle had built into rubble. The Catholics would probably set up a new government and fall back, out of Ulgania while Tres let their appointed government take up matters. Father Estharus and Vincent Drakus would naturally be a part of it, but it meant nothing to Everlet. He was likely going to have to resign his position soon, and most likely to General Mateljan. None of this was appealing to Everlet, but it was the country’s path, not his. He would save Serpentine and allow fate to determine the rest.

“What’s the meaning of this? Why is Roberts pulling my people out of Serpentine?” Tres shouted as he entered the bridge of the Valentine.

“Sir, he did it very quickly. He’s moved back to Desert Command and he’s taken a contingent of the forces deployed to Serpentine with him,” General Mateljan replied.

“So be it. How are things progressing in Kane?” Tres asked, more docile this time.

“Slow. The urban warfare of course took its toll on both sides. Hegemony forces are going to be limping along for a while after what we were able to do to them,” Mateljan said with a small laugh.

“You fool, that was Robert’s doing. He knew we would lose in Kane after I pulled forces away from him so he improvised. If you ever plan on replacing him you’re going to have to learn to do that,” Tres growled. Mateljan may have been thirty years Tres’ senior, but Tres always felt as though he was ordering a small child around.

“Yes sir, of course sir,” Mateljan said. “Is there anything else I can do for you?” he asked.

“Yes. There are two things actually. Inform Roberts I would like to meet with him. It’s vitally important that I do. His actions have forced a change of plans, and the only way to fix this is to see him personally.”

“What do you plan to do, sir?” Mateljan asked.

“I plan to kill him.”

“Why not have his plane shot down, or to have him assassinated?” the general asked.

“Don’t be so naïve. That man probably has more loyal body guards and military support that anything of the sort would be useless. However, if I see him personally, it would be more than effective. You see, he doesn’t believe I have the tenacity to kill him. By now he suspects that these days are his last in the military and in politics, and that he’ll have to resign. So, with this in mind he countered my move to let Kane fall by pulling forces loyal to him away from Serpentine, and to Desert Command. If he wishes to stay alive now, or to save face with his forces, he’ll have to meet with me if I request it.”

“Wouldn’t it be more effective for him to just refuse to meet with you?” Mateljan asked.

“Of course not. He’s been striving for peace and unity. He’ll do anything to bring everyone together, even if it means making personal concessions to me. Denying a meeting with me would polarize our sides and split the country even more. No, if anything he’s going to want to wait until the Hegemony do their damage and leave Ulgania to itself. If he’s allowed to remain a factor until then, I’ll probably be assassinated myself.”
“I understand sir. And the other task you had for me?” Mateljan asked.

“Locate Marcy Trensk.”

OOC: Sorry been on vacation, did you get the memo :P j/k

IC:

Though it was slow, the fighting in Kane began to die down until the final shots were fired and everything fell quiet and the smell of gunfire was replaced with the smell of the dead and smoke. Though it was impossible to think, Kane was even more devastated than before the engagement began. If Kane was a thriving city before, no one could ever tell that now.

Lt. Baskin was tending to some of his wounded when an honorable guest entered the hospital tent and stood before him. Noticing something was blocking the light, he turned and then quickly stood to attention and saluted.

"General Rossetto-Cipriani sir, it is good to see you have made it"

The General saluted back, removed his hat and then shook the Lieutenant's hand.

"Well Baskin, you seem to have done all the work for us" he said, a bit disappointed he had not made the engagement in time to do some fighting himself. "Your men both wounded and lost will receive high honor for this day I can assure you of that"

"We only ask to continue the fight until the last of the schismatics are dead" said Lt. Baskin. "It is what they deserve for standing against the one true faith in blatant defiance."

"But of course, everyone will get their chance to see the schismatics burn for their heresy" said the General. "I have brought more medical supplies and doctors, if you are done here I would like you to join me and review the plan of attack."

Doctors began to file into the tent, Lt. Baskin washed his hands and face, dried himself and then picked up his own hat and followed the General. They walked over to a small building barely standing, which upon arrival the General claimed as a command center while they stayed in Kane. Tables were set up, communication with base camp and home were open, and maps of the area were being studied by the other Commanding officers of the General's 3rd Legion.

"Well Lt. Baskin, with your success here we have only the main objective to take. Serpentine, the capital of Ulgania and I think we can all agree that it will be 5 if not 10 times more difficult to take that this defensive line the Ulganians drew. What I have in mind, is taking the city through three offensive lines, one coming from the south, and the other two from the est and west respectively. This will leave the North exposed and if executed properly will recreate the perfect funnel to push retreating forces threw. Remember residence of the city are secondary targets, it's this new Catholic government that we are here for. They are the ones who will burn for this heresy, the population can hopefully be saved from their sins."

The other officers looked over the map and then at Lt. Baskin since he was the only one among them who had engaged the enemy thus far. Knowing that they were looking for his input, he gave his approval to the plan.

"I believe with our full force, we will be able to take these schismatics General. You plan is sound and the Catholics after all took a good beating here today. We shall have our victory."

The Lieutenant saluted the General and the other followers followed. The General saluted back and then dismissed his officers. They would spend the next day or so preparing the troops for battle. The wounded and dead would be flown back to base camp so that when the Hegemony left Kane there would be only the dead of the enemy and the ghost town left behind them.

Hegemony soldiers withdrew from Kane. Vicious fighting had taken its toll on the already ravaged city.

General Mateljan overlooked the scene. Having arrived earlier in the day, he ordered an incursion force to do reconnaissance of the city. The result? Nothingness.

The large man sighed deeply. Kane had indeed been a splendid city. Peaceful, wealthy, and the most honorable of Ulgania’s people had lived in this city. Its streets and markets resembled the atmosphere of Dresdon, Germany before WWII. Had this city not been harmed by Marcy Trensk, it would have remained a true gem of Ulganian culture and magnificence.

However, there was nothing of the sort left. An official evacuation of the city left nothing left before the fighting started. Of course, as was the situation in all devastated and lawless territories looting had occurred. Trensk had destroyed the city, but not the people. Now, with the people gone fighting had moved unhindered. Mateljan quietly gazed at the city from his view atop the hill outside the city limits, and solemnly turned away.

“Make sure we get intelligence on every single movement the Hegemony makes. I don’t want them to take a single step north of Kane without us knowing.”

With that, he strode away from the scene and left. This small field HQ had been established for recon, but once it was apparent nothing could be gained from keeping tabs on the forsaken ground they fell back to the defensive perimeter around Serpentine. Mateljan had now taken it upon himself to make sure the defenses in the capital were much more substantial than Kane. As was the way of things, news of Ulgania’s defeat in Kane had reached every corner of the country, and countless numbers of civilians were filtering their way out of Serpentine.

There were still legions of forces at Mateljan’s disposal. Combat engineers in Serpentine prepared for the worst the Hegemony could pitch. Plans were being laid for the siege of the city, and every route of advance of the enemy was being considered, while every route of escape was being drawn up. Hopefully the campaign would end in Serpentine.

I pray to God that it does… said Mateljan as he climbed into a helicopter en route for Serpentine.

----

“Sir, I believe one of our informants has located Trensk,” one of Tres’ aids said, as he quietly entered, and in turn exited his office.

Tres stood quietly, and left the room he had at least labeled as his office, and made his way to the bridge of the Valentine. Entering, he motioned for everyone to be at ease, and said, “Where is she?”

“It seems she has been hopping between different locations in Terrel-Ulgith and Serpentine. She’s assuming we’re on her trail and she’s making it very difficult. Mind you, she still has a powerful number of followers in both cities. Moving between them must be difficult for her, but she has managed it while we have been distracted.”

Tres smiled a thin smile. “Make sure she stays in Serpentine when the Hegemony strikes. I’ll be waiting there for her personally.”

Moving Hegemon forces was like moving a herd of elephants both for the size of the group and for the speed at which they were able to move while in formation. When the capital city, the prize of their campaign was growing close, the herd began to split. One group flanked to the right, the other to the left and a third, commanded by General Rossetto-Cipriani himself continued straight on.

It was noon by the time the city came into sight by all three groups. The General took in a good breathe of the air even though he choked a bit on it. Heresy was thick in the air everywhere your nose could turn in his opinion. Standing, he looked through his binoculars at the city, watching as workers hurried their defenses. No doubt the entire city was by now littered with barricades and other walls meant to stop his victorious march to the capital building.

"Archbishop Nolan tell me in your honest, religious opinion, do you believe God smiles on us this day?" ask Antonio.

"God smiles on us always General." said William with a slight smile as he straighten his robes. More so, I should think however, when it comes to days like this when we the righteous stand on the eve of striking down the agents of Satan and restoring God's glorious Church to the lands of his own creation."

"That is all I needed to know Archbishop, thank you" said the General. He sat down in the jeep beside the Archbishop and then extended his hand for the radio. The aid in the front passenger seat handed it to the General.

"This is General Rossetto-Cipriani, all forces begin the attack."

Those words echoed over the air waves for what seemed like an eternity to the officers serving under the General, but in truth it was only a few seconds. Within Serpentine it was like any other peaceful day, at least as peaceful as it had been since this whole ordeal irrupted. The people knew war was coming their way whether they were told or not, it's a feeling all of God's children get when death comes calling.

The first shots were perhaps the deadliest the city had ever suffered. In a instant, homes went from pleasant dwellings to infernos of hell's fire as artillery shots began to rain down on the city. Soldiers took up their positions as hegemon forces began to show themselves over the horizons almost in every direction.

"Knock, knock" said the General to himself. "Anyone home?"

“Mistress, the Hegemony prepares to strike Serpentine today. Are you sure it’s wise to be in the city?” Marcy Tresnk’s driver asked cautiously as he wound through the deserted streets of Serpentine.

“Tres has everything and everyone at his disposal focused on preserving the city right now. I’m hardly on his to-do list.”

“I trust your assurances, Mistress. We’re here,” he said as they entered a small tunnel near a subway.

The tunnel led to a larger room that used to be a subway station, but as time went on and technology improved had been abandoned, but not destroyed. Beyond it was a short abandoned subway tunnel that lead to another station that was buried beneath rubble, but dug out by Tresnk’s followers after Tres took power. It made for a great hiding place in the depths of the city, but this time they had company.

They approached the entrance to the buried station, but saw several Saber agents (OOC: an intelligence group that I’ll elaborate on later) waiting for them, guns drawn.

“Down, on the ground, all of you,” one of them shouted. One of Tresnk’s bodyguards made for his gun, but was quickly shot, as well as the other bodyguards who made for the agents.

“Enough!” Tresnk shouted at her people. “This is useless. We could all be dead in a split second if they wanted to kill us,” she said. Stepping towards the agents, with her hands in the air she addressed them. “It seems you caught up with me, congratulations. Who sent you? Valentine or Roberts?”

“Shut up and come peacefully and quietly, or we’ll just make things a lot harder on you later,” one of them said as he holstered his gun.

Within the hour, the group arrived at the chancellery. It was a site Trensk hadn’t seen for a long time, and hardly recognized. Fortifications had been erected to the tune of a blast wall, several sand-bag protected machine gun positions, and several anti-air positions. She hardly had time to take in the site as she was forced inside the building.

The interior of the chancellery hardly looked the same either. The halls, once ornate and decorative were bare and dank looking. After a quick walk through, it appeared the military was planning on the possibility for a room-to-room fight for the complex.

Tres is desperate. No one would see to these sort of preparations if they didn’t think their lives depended on it, she thought to herself.

Eventually she arrived at what was once her old office.

“He’s waiting inside. Just go in,” the guard said as he removed her handcuffs.

Considering the situation, she had no clue what to expect once she was inside. However, what she saw was beyond her wildest dreams.

Tres Valentine stood over a body, with a decent amount of blood covering his clothes and some of his face. He looked up at Trensk as she entered the room, and rolled the body over, walked behind his desk, and sat in his chair with a clear view of the western sky.

“Everlet!” Trensk cried. “You shot him!”

“Of course I did. I can’t go on having this kind of competition, now can I?”

As if on cue, several blasts sounded to their left. Hegemony forces had entered the city, hitting from the south.

“You’re expecting them to set up a new government, aren’t you?” Marcy asked.

“Now that’s a hasty conclusion,” Tres said.

“No, it’s not. The three most powerful political figures in the country are in this room right now, and one of them is dead. Another is the prisoner of the third, and the third is also the only one who the Hegemony would ever allow to run this country considering the three in charge. That, and considering the changes to the complex, you’re expecting a fight to the bitter end.”

Another series of blasts, and the roar of planes overhead, finally followed by several hissing noises, and more blasts shook the room.

“Very astute observations,” Tres said, turning in his chair to face Trensk. “You really screwed up my plans for taking over this country, Marcy. You decided to complicate things by calling yourself a Neo-Genesian. You brought about a level of hate this country had never seen, and should never have experienced. But, as the old adage goes,” Tres said, closing his eyes and letting a smile creep across his lips, “whenever a door closes, God opens a window. You closed my door, but God opened a window by having the Hegemony invade.”

More blasts and now bursts of gunfire could be heard. Bullets sprayed about, mortars could be seen arcing across the city. Above, Ulgania’s ace pilots were matching wits with the veteran Hegemony forces. All around the city, Hegemony forces battered Ulganians back, house by house, street by street. The fighting eclipsed Kane in every aspect. Making any advance could cost either side an entire company of troops. Ulganian missile launching vehicles could smash an entire unit of tanks just as easily as they could be discovered by wondering units of Hegemon infantry and destroyed. Ulganian snipers picked off any soldier who dared to even show their face in their line of fire, but were just as susceptible to being the victims of a well-aimed shot from a tank. Both sides faced the brutal onslaught with valor, but as push had come to shove many Ulganian units were being forced north as the three lines of attackers began to converge on the chancellery complex.

“You could have rallied the army though? Why didn’t you? You know the Hegemony will win this fight, just like in Kane!” Marcy cried.

“Oh, you’re right, I could have. I came out from the shadow of my uncle, and walked the path of a humble Genesian Catholic. Everyone wins! But, there was still the other one. A wild card named Everlet Roberts who rode the high horse of morality and all that was right. He kept the allegiance of many of my generals, and severely stretched my already taxed resources. For that, he has paid the ultimate price,” he said, waving a hand towards the limp body on the floor of the office.

“So, you got us both to come here when it became obvious a military victory was out of the question?” she asked as some sort of ordinance slammed into the chancellery, causing the entire building to rumble, and for many of the volumes of books to collapse from their shelves around the room.

“Marcy, you seem to have figured it all out quite handily. I’m proud of you, however that comes with a catch,” he said, drawing a gun from inside his jacket. “You can’t tell me you haven’t expected this,” he said as he took aim.

By now, it was obvious that soldiers were running for their lives beneath Tres’ window. Hegemony forces had blasted through the defenses and had entered the building.

“Tres, it doesn’t have to end like this,” Marcy said. “You don’t have to kill me! What would your uncle do!?”

“What would he do indeed?” he asked rhetorically as several people ran by in the hall. “My uncle, who was the Great Uniter, the savior of Ulgania. No, living in that kind of shadow means nothing to me. There are many greater ways to thrive in this country. I just need to grab the power. It shouldn’t be hard. It’s there, for the taking!” Tres said, with a laugh.

“Then if you want it so badly, why don’t you take it? If it’s yours, why don’t you just finish the job and take it!” she shouted as Tres over the sound of automatic weapons spraying in the hall outside.

Tres lowered his gun. “I don’t need to do a thing from here. I don’t need to lift a finger, to say a word, or to even look at you.”

With that, the door was forced open.

“The schismatic!” a soldier shouted. “Kill her!” he yelled as a handful more streamed into the room. Tres didn’t even bother to watch as Trensk was kicked from behind, and forced to the ground. He didn’t watch as the Hegemon soldiers murdered her.

However, he did look up to address them when they moved on towards him. “There, you have your schismatic. Your business should be finished now, shouldn’t it?” he asked, smiling at them.

He was held at gunpoint for several minutes until a high-ranking Hegemon officer entered the room and surveyed the bodies of Trensk and Roberts.

OOC: Yes, I just summed up an entire battle during a conversation.

NRE, I don’t really know what you’d have your officer say in this situation, so take it away.

OOC: Certainly couldn't have done much better myself, although burning Marcy at the stake would have suited the Hegemony a bit more. Still, a job done is a job done

IC:

It was a long and hard road the Hegemon forces had trek through the capital of Serpentine. Many, many good and faithful Catholics now laid dead throughout the streets of this foreign capital. More were left in Kane, so much bloodshed that it was sour the heart of the unfaithful. To the Genesians however, the blood was of the purest and was the only water holy enough to wash away the sins of the city and bring about communion once more.

Lt. Baskin was given the honor of leading the men upon the Chancellery building, perhaps the most fortified location in the city. Taking the parameter was their first hassle but was eventually taken as troops flooded into the hallways. Knowing little of the building's layout and due to enemy positions made within it's halls, Hegemon forces were made to go room to room to get to their objective.

The objective was of course met with the breaking of the door and the entering of the Chancellor's office. Marcy was of course an image that the Hegemony had made their soldiers apparent of, Tres however was a face they knew nothing about. Rushing in the forced him to the ground, as for marcy, she was shot several times throughout her body. She was on the floor dying when Lt. Baskin entered the room and looked upon her broken and bloody body.

Leaning down to her head, listening as she choked on her own blood he said softly in a whisper only she could hear, "may God have mercy on your soul Marcy Trensk, for we this day could not." It was the last thing she heard as the last breathe of life floated away from her torn body. The Lieutenant had Tres held a gunpoint where he had fallen for several minutes while the General was called in.

General Rossetto-Cipriani entered the room and surveyed the body.

"She wasn't armed, she could have stood trial for her crimes and burned." he said finally "the church won't be happy, but at least the job was done"

"Sorry sir" said Lt. Baskin "there was no way of knowing, the other was armed so we could only assume she was"

"No worries, you did fine Lieutenant" said the General as he moved over the Tres. "I can assume he is no longer armed."

"No sir" said the Lieutenant.

"Good" said the General with a smile on his face as he looked down on Tres. "No sense asking your name, I'm sure we'll find a government file in here somewhere. Take him into custody with the others. An get out flag flying over this blasted building. It's time the schismatics know we've won."

The General's orders were carried out. Tres was lead out of the building, looking at the flag pole while he was lead out, he watched as the neo-genesian flag was lowered and the flag of the Hegemony was raised with a salute from it's soldiers. It's dark purple fluttered in the breeze as it soared high on the pole.

Around him he could hear as the gunshots and explosions seemed to die out around him. The bursts were happening at a much more spread out rate. The Ulganian forces were losing, some where even surrendering all together to simply end the bloodshed. Some did it in hopes of going home to their families, others did it to save the capital from the same fate as Kane, most however were just tired of fighting. First between themselves, then against the Hegemony, it was all so tiring.

A truck was waiting to take him away, as he was loaded up he caught his last vision of the city scape around the Chancellery building. People were being forced out by the Hegemony, names were being taken, people were being tagged, and then lead away to large trucks. No doubt going where ever he was being taken to as well. It wasn't long though before Tres found out where he was being taken. The ride in teh truck was short, even though they had taken on other passengers along the way.

Camps were being erected along the outskirts of the city, citizens were being herded into them like cattle. He could tell they were being divided but under what criteria he wasn't hundred percent sure. Being that he was found in the Chancellery building, he was man a person of great interest and was given quarters a bit nice than the general public. Within him were various other government workers they had survived the attack and had been picked up by the Hegemony.

Night was soon falling upon the city and a meal, if that was what it could be call, was issued to the prisoners. A prayer was made with everyone forced to participate and then loudspeakers were moved in. Though it was visually broadcast as well, the only thing the Hegemony provided was the audio. It was a message from the new Governor, or so he fashioned himself, of Catholic Ulgania. His words pierced many citizen's ears as he gave his speech.

"Citizens of Serpentine, I am General Antonio Rossetto-Cipriani and as of this moment I am declaring marshal law over the liberated city of Serpentine. Until such time as all schismatics cane be found it will be necessary to house you in the quarantine camps. I alone shall act as Governor of Serpentine until such time as the Hegemony can help you to rebuild a government. I can assure you that once you have been cleared by the church, you will be allow to return to your homes."

"Until then however, it is my dearest hope that we can all work together and weed out these evil agents of Satan so that Ulgania can stand united once more in front of God and his Holy church, the Genesian Catholic Church. As first order of business it is my pleasure to announce to you that the heathen, Marcy Trensk was put to death today for her crimes against the Holy Mother Church. Her attempt at creating a schismatic sect here in Ulgania was foiled. Her body will be burn at the stake at sunrise tomorrow, along with other high ranking officials captured during our liberation of the city."

"Second order of business is, starting once mass is over tonight, the task of confessing of sins and re-communion with the Holy Mother Church. It is our greatest fear that schismatics still walk among you. That is why, one by one you will met with the priest we've provided, confess your sins as all good Catholics should, and then the process of communion will begin. It is my hope that all Ulgania isn't as vile as Ms. Trensk was however, we will know soon enough."

"I shall leave you know to your dinner, bibles will be passed out soon and mass, which will be lead by our own Archbishop Nolan will commence shortly."

With that the loudspeakers were cut off and the people were left to enjoy the food that was provided. As promised they were all then lead to a common ground where there were all forced to sit on the ground as the Archbishop took to a recently built stage and began the mass which lasted several hours. Upon returning to their camps, people were systematically being weeded out and taken to small tents. Tres could only assume that they were make-shit confessionals.

He himself would never find out, as he was taken to his own tent, and told to go to sleep. Guards were posted everywhere, there was no use to contemplate escape. Morning came with a rude awaking as an oder Tres was not familiar with seeped into his tent. A guard soon entered and told him to get dressed. He was then escorted out of the tent, where the oder was soon given a name, burnt flesh. Obviously several Ulganians had already failed the Hegemony's test of loyalty to the Genesian Faith and were burn at the stake for heresy. Many more stakes were being erected at Tres was lead to a small car and loaded into the back seat.

The car was driven out of the camp, and back into the city, back to where Tres had been capture, back to the Chancellery. It looked the same as he had left yet now it was crawling with Hegemon officers and Hegemon soldiers. The long back trench coated officers had made themselves at home within the various rooms of the Chancellery building. The Chancellor's office was were Tres was lead back to. The doors had been fixed over night, the guards gave a slight knock on the door. The voice inside allow them in.

The floor had been clean, though the stain was still present in Tres mind. General or rather Governor Rossetto-Cipriani was seated behind the desk that Tres himself had found comfort behind just the day before. Looking up from the paperwork in front of him, he motioned for Tres to be broke before him and sat down. After seating him the guards were instructed to leave the room. The General looked Tres over a few minutes as he sat behind the desk. Finally, he broke the silence that had fallen on the room.

"Your former government has done quiet a job. There is very little records left in this building. Though I'm sure there in the city somewhere and that my soldiers will find them, it is simply easer to get information straight from the source, or so I have found. You were the only one with a gun on you in this room therefore we can only guess that it was your gun that killed Everlet Roberts. Now it is just a question of where you were working with Ms Trensk to kill him or if mis Trensk was your next target. But hey, lets start with a easier question, what is your name?"

OOC: Simple answers are overrated ;)

IC:

Tres smiled thinly. Now was his opportunity to, as the late Marcy Trensk had so loudly shouted the night before, to take what was his.

“You know, governor, a great man once called this his office. It wasn’t all that long ago that he sat where you are sitting now. He was the one who brought this nation together, who stitched together the fractured sides of this country and created a single state, free from war, famine, strife, you name it. He was named the Great Unifier before he died.

“And as I said, it wasn’t long ago that he sat in the very seat. That’s exactly where he died, as well, by the hand of Marcy Trensk. She shot him, and stood exactly where I stand now. That man, however shared with me another connection,” Tres said, as he started to move about the room. “He shared the same blood as I. Oh, he did have Orthodox blood in him, but I do not. That man was my uncle, Roland Valentine. However, I have chosen a different course than he. However, to keep things simple, for now I will say that I am his nephew, Tres Valentine, a Genesian Catholic who wished for nothing more than to take what was rightfully mine from that whore of a woman. You see, I plan to arrogate this land. It was once my uncle’s, but he let himself be struck down by that woman, and that woman is the reason you are here. Now, she is dead, and that which was once my uncle’s now lays bare, ready to be taken. Governor, I, Tres Valentine reunited this nation. I took away power from Trensk, and eliminated another source of trouble that, if given the chance would have turned the tide of battle and swept you out of this country.”

the General Chuckled a bit, smirking even before shuffling some papers.

"Mr. Valentine I am a humble man who follows the word of God as he himself has seen it fit to be written for us lowly men to read. As such, I will not debate on whether or not our victory was because of superior might or because of back room politics we could not have known of. The fact of the matter is, the Hegemony won and that places me in charge."

The general leaned back in the chair.

"However, understand that the Hegemony's only concern throughout this entire war has been the possibility of another schism within the Catholic church. The Hegemony broke and invaded the sovereign borders of Ulgania not for conquest but for liberation from the schismatics. That was a our goal at the beginning and it is still our goal now that we have secured a victory. It is a goal, Mr. Valentine, that has almost been met. Ms. Trensk is dead, many of her officers are dead. The church has only to weed out the rest of the populace turned by Ms. Trensk to complete our mission here."

The General turned his attention to the window.

"Already, by orders I have begun a systematic withdraw of forces from this country. You see Mr. Valentine the Hegemony has no long term goals in Ulgania. Sure we will spread the Genesian faith as far as we can, but once we've decided that the schism threat has been crushed, we're leaving whether you're a devout Genesian state or not. The Hegemony simply has better things on it's agenda to spend money on that Ulgania."

"That said Mr. Valentine, the Hegemony is not a foolish government. It fully understands that this region must be stabilized before we can leave, less we leave a void to be fill by who knows what sort of group. You're a polarizing force Mr. Valentine and those under your command that we got to talk, spoke highly of you. That is why I have made the recommendations and have received the orders to help you establish a government here. You're Genesian Catholic and of course that can only help."

"We know that once we leave, anything can happen to this country. You may very well become a Muslim nation, heaven forbid, but frankly the Hegemony simply cannot at this time concern itself with such things. What we can and do very well intend to do is supply your people with the tools of reconstruction. This will included everything your new government could require, save for military supplies. Your industrial sector from what we can tell was mostly unharmed during your civil war and we therefore conclude that you and your government can afford for your own re-militarization. "

"What the Hegemony will provide for is food, water, and the supplies to rebuild shelter that was lost. It is the Hegemony's hope that such hospitality will help to have the Genesian faith spread. Again, in honesty however, the Hegemony has no concerns over the affairs of your nation. Now I am ordered to remain here until we've be able to interview every citizen in this region. Organized as we are, this should take no more than a week. Once we've concluded our study and found that all schismatic elements here have been destroyed, we will formally hand over the government to you."

"Until then however, you're free to operate an informal government here, making what preparations you feel necessary to have a working government ready to take back this region of Ulgania once we're gone."

The General rose from his seat, walking to one side and then point back to the chair.

"This of course includes housing your new government and giving it the space to operate. We will give you special passes to move about the citizen and the region freely. You may have whomever you want brought to you, and so long as they have passed their interview, they shall be released and given the same clearance you have to help operate your informal government. Is there anything you would like to request of us at this moment?"

“I am thankful the Hegemony has kept its nose to the stone in its efforts. It seems as though everyone involved has gotten what they want. For now, rebuilding the government is of prime importance. There are a few people who I would request to be brought forth to assume duties. One would be Vincent Drakus. He used to be Prime Minister, and defected away from Trensk early on, right after she declared Neo-Genesianism. Another, General Mateljan. You should be able to find him in Terrel Ulgith.

“The rest of the government should already be in your custody. I already personally saw to the suspension of portions of the constitution that could be used to subvert stability in the new government. Once the chancellery’s directives return to normal, things can more easily be phased back into a state of normalcy.

“Also, if your goodwill spreads than perhaps Genesianism may as well. I warn you though, Roberts did allow the Combine from Ukabanea to enter Ulgania, and reinforce the Orthodox views in the country. For ever Catholic in Ulgania, eight Orthodox followers pop up. I personally with this effort the guidance of God though.”

Tres paced to a chair in front of the desk. “Now, tell me, after this war ends, and Hegemon influence wanes in Ulgania, how would a partnership between our nations sound? The nation, while not completely Catholic is still run by a government that has Catholic interests at heart. It could be of beneficial nature. It’s nothing committal, but still an offer.”

The Hegemony is not opposed to operating an embassy here in Ulgania once we've left" said the General as he positioned himself to the other end of the desk. "Though we traditionally keep to ourselves and prefer to only interact with nations who have overwhelming if not total, Genesian majorities we are interested in keeping the lines of communication open between our government in Acropolis and yours here, in Serpentine."

"That said, this uneasy friendship will stay as such and even deteriorate should your government prove itself to move away from the church and it's teachings. However, so long as a strong Genesian presence is felt here in Serpentine by the Hegemony, then we'll continue to keep an ear open for your government. We don't like to tolerate Heathens, orthodox or other and would certain fund any campaign against them should your government request it. However, given the state of the times we'll tolerate them here, again only so long as Genesians are in the government."

"As for your requests, so long as they are within the old Catholic zone of influence here in Ulgania, the Hegemony will be able to find them and have them brought here. Should they be on the other side of the civil war conflict, the best we can do is send communications for them to come as well as offer for their transportation. If you wish to and believe a personal invitation made by yourself will help to get them here, then we can provide you with the equipment to do so."

"I see to it that the rest of the staff you have requested is released and brought here as well as the departure of my staff from this building. We'll continue to operate here as well as in our base camp to the South until our operation is complete. Is there anything else that I can assist you with Chancellor Valentine?"

The General addressed Tres in such a manner to show his sincerity that the Hegemony had no intention of staying as well as a small sign of respect to the new leader of Ulgania.

The General was good to his word, in a weeks time from allowing Tres' to begin establishing his government, the Hegemony slowly but steadily withdrew it's forces until at the end of the week, a Saturday actually, there was but only a handful of soldiers remaining. In the detention camps, the smell of burnt flesh was abound. It was something the Ulganians would take time to get rid of.

The Hegemony was nice enough to take down what stakes remained erect though many were used so many times that they themselves collapsed burnt to a crisp. The church had done a thorough job of interviewing and finding the guilty. Though it was likely many innocent people did die at the hands of the South African Genesian Church, the Archbishop would never admit it. In his report all were found guilty in some way, many in multiple ways, of sins against the church and humanity.

On the last day the priests went out, going door to door and passing out bibles. Soldiers accompanied the though it was not necessary. As promised, many buildings were reconstructed with the Hegemonies help and with the authority of the new chancellor, an embassy was constructed. Though not yet complete, it would be within another few weeks.

The General met with Tres one last time, handing reports of what the Hegemony had done and what they promised to continue to help with even though they were official leaving the area. A diplomatic core would be dispatched soon to act as Ambassador to the Ulganian people for the Hegemony. When the small conference was adjured the two men shook hands and then the two took a ride to the airport. With a final salute, the General bordered his plane and left Ulgania. With the southern base camp disbanded, the finally troop carriers taken to the sky and the General's personal plane, with the Archbishop on board now on it's way home, the Hegemony's involvement was finally over.

How Ulgania would go on from this time forward, only time could tell. So long as they abide by the Hegemony's request, and crushed schismatics were they may crop up, the two nations would have no further hostilities.

OOC: Ok, the country is yours again  It has been fun though, thanks for the opportunity. B)

OOC: Yeah, definitely. I got my literary itch out of the way with it.

I copy/pasted all my IC stuff into MSword and it came to 60 pages, and 26,000 words. Pretty much what I thought it would be haha. Great, now I can move on to other things... like expansion
