Scythirian intelligence had known the location of Bruce McDaniel’s bumper for a few weeks; one of McDaniel’s staff was a Hu’fievrenist loyalist, and had made contact with a Scythirian spy two months back.

Even if Scythirian intelligence had not been so aware of the movements of the Head of the Commonwealth, almost a million soldiers, the vast majority of the Chiron army in Zolony, had amassed at the city near the bunker, Eaglewood, ready to face the enemy.

The city was located on a hill, making it a desirable location to defend. The Scythirians of course vastly outnumbered the Chirons 8-1, but this was the New British Empire’s only chance.

Soldiers loyal to Her Majesty the Empress looked to the east and saw the imposing army of Scythirus, assembled and advancing upon Eaglewood. They went as far as the eye could see…the Persians were a force to be reckoned with. The Chirons furiously set up machine guns and barbed wire, under fire from mortars all the while.

Bruce McDaniels watched from a safe distance. He was a former intelligence officer; he might be able to fight in an enclosed area, but he couldn’t fight a war.

On the other side of the hill was Ock’on Bulda, sitting next to a Scythirian general in a jeep. Both of the generals knew this was the end of the Zolon War, within days of its start.

Taking continual strikes against the infantry forces that continued to march onwards, those planes that had not yet been shot down continued to fire ordinances against the most unprotected, common-type soldier targets that could be found.

As the raid came to a close, it was deemed to be too risky to make any inflight fueling preparations. Those in the worst of shape, of those few planes that remained, did in fact eject over Eaglewood, hoping that they would be treated honorably by their allies. The remainders perished, sacrificing themselves as permanent testaments to the Australian will.

Having had to withdraw the remainder of the flotilla from the area, to the relative safety of the waters south of the Holy Catholic Hegemony, a decision had to be made. Colonel Atreyu Waluyanu was put into the position of commanding the forces abroad, and given the field promotion as Acting Brigadier. It was decided that C-2 Greyhound craft would be rallied in their intended Carrier-on board-Delivery role. This could allow the Emangu Defense Force to more readily mobilize, and lessen the difficult distances between home and the battlefield that were causing such distress.

As supplies, fighting vehicles, and troops were properly stacked into the aircraft, a flight plan that would take them over unclaimed land and through Zolony's back door was planned, avoiding unnecessary fire. This having been said, Lightening class fighters were to accompany the sortie, making sure no harm came to these craft. Or, at the least, trying to minimize it. Enough losses had been taken as it was.

Waluyanu decided that a hold out in Eaglewood was the best tactical defense point, and it was there that the troops were concentrated the most heavy per the plan.

The Scythirian advancement suffered very little from the Emanguan air strikes. Aside from the fact that the force they assembled was vast, they also possessed the sufficient anti-aircraft fire and aerial support from their aircraft carriers anchored off the coast to turn back most of the assaults. Now the great legions stood outside Eaglewood.

Artillery bombardment of the city began almost immediately. They'd shell the military positions with prejudice, the thunderous noise of war echoing across the landscape. Teams were sent ahead to gain a way into the city so that they may acquire their targets and end this war as quickly as possible. The Chirons fought back valiantly, but the Scythirians numbered significantly more and were skillfully trained in warfare.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No response was received from the Chiron forces. This caused much concern aboard the Kiru Taoese command ship, but the fleets moved on. Eventually they would come across the scene off the Zolon coast, and much dread filled the hearts of many sailors that moment. The sea was clearly dominated by the Scythirians and the Kiru Taoese would have little possible chance to get past them.
A number of Scythirian ships moved in to take on the assembled fleets from Kiru Tao, ready to make mince meat out of them. The Kiru Taoese prepared for the worst. If things truly got bad, they might have to retreat.
From: Lord Governor and Head of the Commonwealth Bruce McDaniels
To: Kiru Taoese Naval Command
Retreat from Zolony. The Scythirians thoroughly control the coast and any attempt to land will simply result in the slaughter of your troops.
The Kiru Taoese were partially relieved to see the response, but in partial dismay to see its content.
Not facing much of a choice with the mammoth Scythirian naval forces bearing in on their position, the Kiru Taoese fleets turned to evasive maneuvers. After a number of shots from the enemy, the Kiru Taoese ships moved as quickly as they could away from Zolony.
Bruce McDaniels couldn’t get away from the horrid stench of gore. He couldn’t look back, couldn’t look at the destroyed city occupied by the Scythirians. He couldn’t look forward either, to see his men retreating, their honor besmirch. He looked at the ground as he hurried away from stray gunfire still coming from the enemy. At last, he found a small ridge, where he could take cover and catch his breath.
He sat on a rock, desperately trying to catch his breath. He grabbed his canteen and took a chug, letting the water cleanse his dry throat. His eyes, however, were not dry, rather, they were moist with tears barely kept at bay.
He was accompanied by his bodyguard Tomaya Gre’gora, a Zolon. The guard looked at his commander, pleading for some sort of direction, some sort of order that could turn the tide.
Bruce shook his head. “We’re finished, Tom.”
Tomaya nodded. He took a seat next to his commander, looking somber. He nervously played with his rifle, wondering whom he would use it next on – the enemy, or himself?
“We have the men to keep fighting…” Bruce said, not addressing Tomaya but rather talking to himself. “But…I already took Zolony through one war. I can’t subject her to another. We have to surrender.”
Tomaya grimaced. “Sir, do you think Zolony will be as bad as it was…before? When we had the constant wars with Harumf and Flumes, the famines, the killings?”
Bruce didn’t answer. “I did everything for Zolony. I gave my life to Zolony. Those Persian fuckers call me a colonist. I fought for Zolony! I brought her out of a god damned depression, I brought her out of tyranny, and I get the fucking Emperor of Scythirus invading and telling me that I’m a tyrant. Fuck it!”
Both of the men were silent for a moment. Then, the silence was broken by the sound of Scythirian artillery being fired at the fleeing army.
Bruce McDaniels died twenty minutes later, when shrapnel from an exploded shell pierced his brain. Tomaya Gre’gora managed to escape to the east, where Vena’s army continued to put up a fight. He fought in two battles before sustaining a wound to the crotch. He survived the wound, but later committed suicide.
OOC: This will be finished tomorrow.
Considering the fact of the Emanguan air attacks, it looked grim for these troops as well. However, Emanguan soldiers who had been able to reach the city fortified themselves the best they could. Brigadier Waluyanu began to set up abandoned rooms in damaged buildings as machine gun posts and emplacements, while other rooms were secured to treat the wounded and dieing as they came. With carts of extra, hand fashioned, LAW rounds, being moved around by hand it began to look much as the Battle of Berlin did. However, these Australians were not going to give up the fleeting dream of a continued status quo in Zolony.
This small band dug in, at the long outskirts of the city, to continue its defense to the bitter end. In a stirring speech to his troops, Waluyanu looked to his men and said
Quote:
The body is clothing. It is but weak textile. Made of treads of blood and flesh. The soul however, is the person that this clothing wears. None of us need fear death. Death is simply that clothing being torn off. The soul is then free to enter the clothing of a newborn, and be free from this bloody conflict. Your sacrifice here will be remembered by the Gods; have no fear of that. To be killed here is simply to live forever. Every moment remember that I, too, am with you.
Snipers and explosives experts continued to utilize hit and run gurillea tactics long into the night while the automatic weapons still rested in capable hands. It was hoped that this desperate, last ditch defense would hold out against the nearly unstoppable Scythirian military. With news of the Kiru Taoese being unable to land on the shores reaching to them, it seemed as though there was nothing left to fight for. Emanguan forces began to fight in a manner to simply kill as many victorious Scythirian troops as possible before being killed, regardless of the tactical value behind this.
Several moments later, Waluyanu was killed at the butt of an assault rifle while desperately fighting with his sidearm.
In the end, the remaining few Emanguan troops threw down their weapons and rose a white flag over the small, shredded apartment that remained their only vestige. They prayed that they would be treated humanely.
It had been a month since the victory at Eaglewood. The British forces had since been continually forced back, deeper into the interior of Zolony. Some were captured; Ock’on, much to the chagrin of his Scythirian counterparts, insisted that they be taken as prisoners of wars, rather than be slaughtered. What remained of the British forces were disorganized and hardly able to oppose the Hu’fievrenist might. Only General Vena continued to put up a fight in the north-east.
The war was over, for all intents and purposes, and now, it was officially over. The Chiron Prime Minister had signed a peace treaty with the new Zolon government, granting Zolony independence, apologizing for the colonization, and sending reparations to the Zolons, all in exchange for the prisoners of war captured by the Scythirians and Zolons.
Now the time for warfare was over, and the time for nation-building had begun. The first order of business was choosing a new capital: the heretic city of Gol’bon had been burnt to the ground, while the old capital, Hu’fiev, had been destroyed by a nuclear bomb years earlier, and, besides that, was far too close to Vena’s forces for comfort. The city of Kel’tuda, on the coast of the province of Uri, had been chosen instead.
Scythirian forces had begun leaving Zolony; now Zolony would require an army of her own. The Swords of the Hu’fievren, under General Hi’o Vendor’zic, of course existed, but they were poorly trained and more likely to be loyal to their general before their government.
Rather, Ock’on would have to revive the martial spirit that had allowed Zolony to exist as the greatest power in Africa years before. It would be difficult; millions of men would have to be trained and equipped, but, with the help of the Scythirians and the rest of the Dominion, it was possible.
He would also have to revitalize the economy. Under the Chirons, the economy had been doing well enough, but the war had hurt it badly. Zolony was assured of Scythirian handouts, but those wouldn’t last forever.
But for the moment, he needed to show his face to the Zolon people. Thus, he had arranged for a broadcast to the nation, from a hastily assembled capital building. He had never been one for public speaking, and was very, very nervous. His speech had been entirely written by one of his aides.
Security was tight. Only the press and his most trusted generals had been allowed into the press room. The new Zolon government had not yet gotten around to nationalizing the news services; soon enough, many of those in the room, taking his pictures and taking notes, would be out of a job.
Ock’on took a deep breath and approached the podium. Cameras flashed about him. He awkwardly enough.
“Today, I address Zolony, our great homeland. I address Africa as well, and I address the world.
“In the last month, we have forced Chiron forces have been forced out of our homeland, with the help of our Scythirian allies, whom we all owe the greatest thanks and appreciation. Yesterday, a peace treaty was signed with the Chiron government, officially ending the Zolon War of Liberation. Zolony is free and independent once more.
“This news may come as a shock to you, and I of course mean the Zolon people. In the last decade and a half, we have been through three wars. We are all a bit shell-shocked. Many have lost friends and family to these horrible wars. Zolons have fought Zolons.
“For a decade and a half-“
At this point, he was interrupted by a hacking cough.
“Excuse me. For a decade and a half, we have been without the guiding light of our God and ruler, the Hu’fievren. Those fifteen years have been the worst years in the history of Zolony.
“I cannot, and we as a people cannot, blame those who fought on the wrong side. We all were blind, cut off from God. All who fought against us should know that they will be granted clemency for their actions. The Hu’fievren has returned.
“My grand-son, the son of the God-Emperor of Scythirus, is the latest incarnation of the Hu’fievren. Upon his sixteenth birthday, this incarnation will be fully realized. Until then, I shall serve as Regent of Zolony, with he as the A’Hul Prince.
“For the benefit of Zolony, I ask that her great martial culture be revitalized. I ask all able-bodied men to enlist in the armed forces. With the help of Scythirus, let us be a strong nation once again.
“But a nation cannot thrive on battle alone. We must push forward with our economy. We will build an industrial Zolony to put any other state, be it African, European, American, or Asian, to shame.
“If we do all these things, olld Zolony is reborn. We shall be a great nation once again, my people. The evil ‘Commonwealth of Zolony’ is dead. Let the holy African Confederacy of Zolony be reborn.
“And yes, I speak of the African Confederacy of days past. Now, I speak to Africa. Zolony will be refounding that Confederacy, and all states in Africa are invited to take part in it. Let Africa be united.
“Beyond that, let Africa be free of imperialism. Africa is for Africans, as ordained by the holy Almighty at the dawn of time. Colonist nations and cultures must vacate Africa.
“I thank you, and I pray to the Almighty for the well being of the A’Hul Prince until he can take the mantle of Godhood, and for the wellbeing of the nation, and for the wellbeing of Africa. I hope you all will pray with me.”
With that, he stepped down from the podium.
OOC: So, that’s it. I will finish up the war in the northeast and the subsequent invasion of Flumes when I get back. See you guys.
