Monday morning, on the way to work, we stopped at the CVS Pharmacy so I could pick up a perscription for Licinapril, my medication to lower my blood pressure. Getting out of the passenger side of the car I tangled my feet in the shoulder strap of my briefcase (sitting on the floor between my legs) and managed a graceful fall to the pavement, wacking the palm of my left hand, and then my arm against the blacktop. Blood blisters in the palm area, severe scrape on my left arm. No biggie. At work, I continued to drink coffee, dehydrating myself after a weekend of play in the hot sun, and apparently my blood pressure medication was particularly powerful, lowering my blood pressure to a delightful 65/40. At the same time, my blood sugar took a nose-dive down to about 70. At about 11:00 I left my desk to sneek outside for a smoke. The next thing I remember was staring at the back door of my office wondering what this place was. Eventually it dawned on me that I worked there, and went in to my desk where I tried many, many times to unlock my computer, to no avail, as I had totally forgotten my password. I then got up and wondered around the office aimlessly for a while, totally disorientated until I ran into my boss, who led me back to my desk and called an ambulance. In the ambulance my BP was 70/45 and my blood sugar was 65. It was now 1:00 in the afternoon and I had no recollection what had occurred between 11:30 and 1:00. I also had a nice bump and scrape on my head and a broken rib on my left side. I arrived at the U. of Michigan hospital, was all hooked up to monitors as they pumped 1 liter of saline solution into me and my BP rose to a delightful 104/70. They planned to admit me for tests and observation. Don showed up (my boss called him) and we sat there watching the monitors, until he left around 5:00 to feed the dog. I was still on a guerney in the hallway waiting for a room at 6:30 all hooked up to monitors and with an IV in me whan I felt the very strong urge for a cigarette that accompanied my getting really pissed off for being ignored (when I first got there they did a CT scan of my head to determine I did not have a concussion, and an x-ray of my side to determine I did have a cracked rib, but did not have a punctured lung). So, I stood up and started pulling all the needles out of my and tearing off all the monitor leads, went to the desk, told them I was leaving, and called Don to come get me. I went out to the street and had several cigarettes while I waited. The next day we went to my doctor who explained that a combination of my medications and dehydration caused the drop in blood pressure. I have since stopped taking two meds, the Liprinipril for my blood pressure (and to help prevent kidney problems) and the glipiside for my diabetes. My blood pressure last night was 107/70, and my blood sugar was a nice 102. This morning, my BP is 135/80, a bit high, but at least now we can start looking to find the right dose of the BP meds. I am back at work and feeling just fine. Now, my guess is my wonderful insurance company will not cover the ambulence ride because I left the hospital against the advice of my doctors. I say fuck that, as no one should be left sitting in a hallway on a damn guerney for 6 hours being ignored, unfed and unattended (and all hooked up so they can't go out for a cigarette)! And for what? So a bunch of med students at the University hospital can take turns trying to figure out what my problem is? No thank-you! |

Phew. When I was reading this my thoughts were: "Oh crap... he's lost a foot... or gone blind... or lost a foot and gone blind! And had a heart attack!" If you're fine, put that at the start of the post old man! You guys have a crap healthcare system though. In the UK, you'd only be left alone for four hours before being taken care of. |

Ugh that sucks. Trying screaming at your insurance company to cover expenses if yu get stressed again. That kind of venting definitely helps |

You had to wait 6 hours AND you don't get free healthcare. Now that is ridiculous. We moan about waiting times and we don't have to pay! I didn't realise you were a smoker though. So am I! :) |

There are a lot of things I do that you shouldn't. Smoking is one of them. Although if you must have a vice, there are worse things - yet from what you have told us, smoking is not your only vice B) ^^ :P :shy: |

No, smoking is not my only vice. Right now, I'm really high as a kite and I lost half a gram as well (that is half a gram of coke) and that cost me £50 (that's a $100 for you Americans). Yeah I bought a gram and it cost me £50 and I went and lost half of it and believe I'm sooooooo pissed off. Like unbelievably pissed off and I have work in 3 hours! I think I'm just gonna stay up, I'm contacting everyone I know haha! And this took me like 15 minutes to write! I wish I could take a picture of my pupils and you would all see! :) |

Glad your okay. I've learned that the hospital is a place requiring patience... A lot of it. The day they found my Brain Tumor was something like this 6:30 AM-Get there and check in for CT scan 7:00-Scheduled time for scan 8:00-Actual time for scan 9:00-Doctor looking at results 10:00-Doctor looking at results 10:30-One of the most awkward moments of my life, oriental lab technician trying to tell me and my mom that something is wrong, i have a something in my head... After about 5 minutes with 2 translators, we learn I need an MRI 2:00-MRI ... ... ... ... 8:30-Finally meet with my Brain Suregon who goes over MRI... 15 hours in the hospital when you find out you have a tumor isn't fun. ... Now I can understand you ripping out all your hook-ups and leaving, I felt like doing this quite a bit... I really really can't complain about American Hospitals though, I had an effin brain tumor and I was out and home functioning 5 days after my surgury... Crazy... And I never want to go back to a hospital ever ever again. Ever. Screw that. |

Here we go with the nose sugar again...... :P You know what I don't get about smokers, it can be the hottest day on record and yet STILL I'll see people smoking. I've never understood that, but living in a state that was one of the country's most popular (still may be) for the exportation of tobacco, I should be surprised at all the smokers around here. Never been a fan myself. Edited by NRE, Jun 22 2008, 12:51 PM.

Interesting fact: If you visit your doctor and he says "You should stop smoking" he is allowed to bill you $10, because "Counseling against smoking" is considered a chargeable service by American insurance operations. There are a lot of other hidden fees in the doctor's office to be aware of too although I can't think of them off the top of my head. |
