Ok... much like every OS... I've come to the conclusion that every web-browser sucks. Here's the run down. IE Do you use it? – Yeah, not that I’m proud of it, but I use IE at least once a week. More frequently if people are having trouble with my websites and this forum so I can see things from their perspective. Rating out of 10 – 5/10. Pros: 1) Compatibility. All major companies – even tech geeks like google – use IE. As such, almost all websites are optimised for IE. Same for plug ins. 2) Mickeysoft. Because you are using windoze (and, statistically speaking, you are using windows), IE can share the common protocols it has with Windows Explorer. Meaning it runs faster than all the competition browsers. Whether or not this is a noticeable difference depends on your computer set up. Cons: 1) Compatibility and Mickeysoft. Because IE is sooo widely used and uses so many common protocols just about every virus you’ll come across on the net has been tailor made for IE. Yay. Even the “secure” versions. 2) Lack of innovation. IE has tabbed browsing? Wow. Great. Three f-ing years after the competition. What’s next? Torrent downloader? Built in chat? Seriously mickeysoft... do something original rather than rip off your free competitors. Use that money drain you call R&D to do something other than steal ideas. 3) Toolbars. I mean, WTF. IE is easily the least customable of all the browsers. If you want to get it to do something vaguely different/efficient you need to download some bloated toolbar. If you can find a toolbar with the functions you want. Firefox Do you use it? – Using it right now bitches. Making this post from FF. That said... until recently I was using FF only a little more than IE. My economy calculator (will be releasing the Alpha version... after I finish this post) relies on FF (though I might adapt it to make it work across more than one browser. Rating out of ten – 6/10 Pros: 1) Extensions. Get your browser to do what you want it to do rather than what Bill Gates (the man who said “I see no reason why computers will ever need more than two megabytes of RAM”). Wonderful. 2) Greasemonkey. Technically, Greasemonkey is an extension. But god-damn! Put your own Java Scripts into your web browser. Change the look of web pages. Ad links where there was not links before. Change colours. Append additional information to pages. 3) It works. FF will display your pages. It supports all your major add-ons. Tabbed browsing. Basic pop-up blocker. Cons: 1) Memory bloat. Ok, so FF is a third party application. It was basically clobbed together in some guys basement. I don’t expect it to be as slick as IE. But come on. I have FF open right now, just idling (doing nothing) while I type this post in word. It’s using 50% more system resources than my browser that I’m using to download high quality video from. 2) Memory leaks. I’ve yet to use FF3... but experience with FF2 and FF tells me that FF’s hogging of my computer’s memory is not just due to running inefficient code. But it’s using actively bugged code that’ll continue to use memory even after the program has been closed. Using IE is making a surgical incision into your systems resources. Using FF is stabbing your computer with a shank then leaving it to bleed to death. 3) Lack of functionality. Basic FF does the least of all the basic browsers. It also takes up the most harddive space. In order to get FF upto the functionality of Opera (see below) requires installing no less than six extensions. All coded inefficiently by guys in their basements, all adding to the huge memory load of FF. Great. 4) Really, really, really annoying fanbase who insist that it’s the “best browser” who refuse to listen when you state that out browsers can replicate all the functions of FF. Opera Do you use it? – No. Ok, that’s a lie. Opera was my browser of choice. The 9.5 beta saw constant use, whenever I was online, Opera would be what I was using. I’m using it now, purely as a torrent downloader. Rating out of ten? – 1/10 Pros: None. Cons: 1) Doesn’t work. Since the “stable” release of Opera 9.5, the thing crashes every five minutes. It’s impossible to load imageboards. The cache functions are totally borked. It forgets preferences every time the browser is closed. It doesn’t correctly import favourites. 2) Working Opera has a lot of functions. And while it’s not as customisable as FF, it can handle custom java scripts that the user wants to input and has “widgets” which are... a watered down version of Firefox extensions. Broken Opera doesn’t seem to want to process these. Safari Do I use it? – No. Rating out of ten – 3/10 Pros: None that I can see. Cons: My experience of Safari is limited. But the time I did get to use it, it failed to load three websites correctly and lagged like hell (despite being used on a Mac). It also didn’t seem to do anything FF and Opera don’t. Plus, like all Mac BS, it’s bundled with software you probably don’t want (iTunes). And, my personal favourite, is how it’s the least secure of the four main browsers. Even more easily hacked than IE. Now that’s an achievement. **** Your thoughts? |

FireFox. While bloated, it works better than every other browser I've tried. |

I never liked Firefox; something would always happen to annoy me. As a result, i uniformly use IE over Firefox when given the choice. I liked Opera 9 better than any IE version. I never took the time to re-download it when I got this new laptop about a year ago. So I haven't tried the new version and since it apparently doesn't work, more power to me.

I'm kind of a FF Elitist. Also I find it to be hilarious that IE 5 and 6 are more secure than recent releases, and yet FF is still more secure. The lastest beta releases have been amazing. Very noticeable increases in speed, and great performance with NO crashes. Sure it's a little bloated, but right now (with 8 tabs open and a load of extensions, and maybe a dozen greasemonkey scripts going) it's only taking 58 megabytes of RAM. If anyone ever complains that something like firefox is taking up just 58 MB, then there's something wrong. Besides, I have 2 gb of RAM with Vista (however I managed to get RAM usage from 40% when idling down to 25% B) ) Used to use Opera. It's the most secure out of all of them at the moment. Safari doesn't suck. Time Space is cool as a concept, but is really insecure and a memory hog (but still, what more would you expect from the world's first 3D web browser? haha) Steam/Winamp need to stop trying to make browsers. It makes me cry a little seeing them... |

AOL owns Netscape, and they officially discontinued service of it. No more finding official releases of it, but I'm sure there's more than one smart programmer working on a homebrew version in some lonely basement somewhere. |

Opera 9.5 for Mac works flawlessly, Nag. As a matter of fact, it solved the Photobucket-not-uploading issue I had with 9.27. Speed Dial is an exclusive and awesome feature. 10/10, IMHO. |

Speed dial is AMAZING. Definately one of the features that sets Opera apart from other browsers. Of course, in 9.5beta Speed Dial worked. 9.5"stable" refuses to import my Speed Dial preferences (along with any of my favourites arranged into folders). |

Yeah, right as 1 PM EST rolled around Mozilla.com and getfirefox.com went down... my only guess is they were flooded by people trying to DL it and couldn't handle the traffic. Everything's fixed now, and you can DL it any time. They're trying to break a guiness world record for number of downloads or something... judging by the fact they couldn't handle the bandwidth earlier they'll break that record haha. Really, they should have set up more than 3 mirrors. |
