I am so extremely angry!!!!!!! And sad, as well. I just found out from someone that a poor little kitten, not far from where I live, was massacred who knows how many times by the wheels of cars smushing it. My friend was so taken with pity and grief for the poor kitten that he buried it in his backyard. HOW CAN PEOPLE BE SO CRUEL!?!?!!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! It disgusts me, humans do....I wish some of those people would be run over by cars themselves, so they know how it'd feel.... That poor thing.....*goes back into sob corner*        |

When I lived in Miami, about once a month there would be a news story about someone trying to cross I-95 and getting run over, and then getting run over by the next 20 cars! No one would stop. Now, if that's how they treat humans, what do you expect with kittens - now I know that is no condollance, but people can be pretty thoughtless and self-centered. |

Hit and run with no one helping... Also, I now technically know a murderer. About two weeks back a former childhood friend (former because he moved away when I was seven) killed his grandfather who lived in the same town as me. Shotgun to the back of the head at a close proximity. This was also the same story that was being used by an editor at work to describe to me how to cover a "hard" news story. (Not hard as in hard to cover). That was a weird day at work. |

Life is cheap, at least Animal life is cheap, to Americans. This is a self-centered soicety, and if it doesn't affect you then you shouldn't care. I find that disgusting. I hunt, but when I kill something I end up eating it, I don't hunt merely for sport. Yeah and this morning I saw a kitten that had been ran over, in a parking lot, if I had a shovel with me I would have buried it, I would have moved it but I would rather avoid possible germs and getting blood on me. |

I don't want to defend the automobilists, but sometimes animals (usually wild animals where I live) cross the street and you can't do nothing to avoid them. It's not unusual to see dead animals on the road, and you cannot really distinguish a dead cat from a dead groundhog... |

Yeah, there have been time people have died trying to avoid animals. Personally I'd rather live than die over a kitten. Also down here we have Armadillos(the wiki link, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armadillos) They are really dumb, and they can carry leprosy, so I leave them on the road. |

I don't know anything about armadillos, so I will give you the benefit of the doubt. Here, we have mostly groundhogs and skunks. In some cases, you will also see dead raccoons across the street, but it's not as common as the first two. |

I don't want to defend them either, but to add to what Paradise said, the first thing I learned when I took driving lessons was not to stop or swerve for animals because it would endanger you or other people and most animals usually get out of the way. But this is still a sad occurance. |

An animial is not a human. First off, I'd rather kill an animal than inconvenience a human. Second, killing animals isn't murder. If I'm driving and there's a kitten in the road... it's gonna eat tarmac. And in the UK, that's fine and legal. Here's where I break the law: I'd stop the car and go back to the animal. Now, whether I pick it up and bury it or (and let's face it, this is the more likely one) sling it in the back of the car to BBQ later, I'm breaking the law. If the thing is still alive, killing it or moving it to take to the vet are ALSO both against the law (but I'd kill it... BBQ road kill... I'm making myself feel hungry). That said... I respect Al's point of view. If you want to care about animals, more power to you and don't let jerks like me hold you back. |

QFT. I do not believe in cruelty to animals when there is no need, as it reflects negatively on the person committing the act, not because I believe the animal has any rights (I am fully for KFC doing whatever the hell it wants to its chickens as long as it's not gonna kill me). Would it be better if a person swerved to stop from hitting the cat and killed a kid walking home from school? |

Indeed. What's the point in being cruel to animals? Unless you've got a good reason (like being able to eat, wanting to save/make money or wanting to protect humans), being cruel to animals is just dumb and a symbol of low self esteem. |

Pretty sure it's dogs. I think that the cat-eating thing is an urban myth. Could be wrong though... |

My biggest beef (no pun intended) with the roadkill issue is when it comes to domesticated animals, though I certainly would like to avoid them when possible, I don't usually feel 100% bad if I do hit them because the first thing that comes to mind is "where is their owner?" If you're going to have a pet, more power to you because I for one have no real interest, please for the sake of people driving keep them off the road. That said, deer is real big here. It's never unusual to hit a deer, especially in rural areas. I've come close, but no cigar. My dad on the other hand  well it made for an interesting story. Hey Paradise, have you ever come across a Moose? Edited by NRE, Jun 9 2008, 05:56 PM.

Not mooses, but deers yes (although they usually don't come in the urban area, so you must go in the rural area to hope seeing one). AFAIK, mooses are mostly on the northern shore of the St-Lawrence river. |
