"Very well, since there don't appear to be anymore questions for Samantha, she'll be taking us out to the Vostok station," said Ivan Prigovosk in a satisfied tone. He stood up after the guide and let her lead the way back outside. Two of the other Yshurakans seemed to be conversing about Arthur Greywolf's incredible theory with chuckles. "Wasn't he the same guy who suggested the possibility of discovering ancient architecture in this frozen wasteland?" one said slyly. "Y'know, when we sent the science team before they disappeared?" "Yeah, he was," the other said. "Pretty wild ideas he has." Both laughed as they passed the subject of their discussion. Suddenly Arthur would feel a comforting pat on his shoulder. "Don't let them get you down," someone said in a Kiru Taoese accent. "I thought your theory was pretty cool. It reminded me of the sorts of ideas you see in a sci-fi manga." The Kiru Taoese man gave him a handshake. "I'm Takahashi Sugichi," he stated in introduction. "Chief investigator for Kiru Tao. Like every other government involved, we are most concerned about the possible military presence on this continent. My government's pretty confident we'll get to the bottom of this." Eventually the sizable investigation team was loaded back into the Sno-cats. Samantha Tizigorcski drove her vehicle into the lead, and the truck-like behemoths rolled off into the snow and ice on their treaded belts. The journey to Vostok would not be a short one and there would be no telling what they would encounter on the way, so the combat personnel that Yshurak and Russia brought were on full alert to watch the passing horizons for anything suspicious. OOC: Beyond this point, characters are mortal and expendable. Many will die on the way. Don't get too attached. Edited by Comrade Queen, Jul 24 2008, 07:23 PM.

Greywolf nodded in earnest, smiling at the recognition, no matter how it was delivered, "I thank you for your kind words. They truly mean something to me. I trust that you are in some way armed? I am assured that this mission will not be without its dangers, and therefore, I equally trust that you are not in requirement of any weapon." He leaned in carefully, "However, if you are, you should come to me. There is a reason that I wear this long poncho. Not only is traditional among my people, and it is decorated with our art, but it is also a good cloak for concealing things. If you have need, I can trust you. I know that." |

The Nagian team zipped across the frozen landscape in apparent silence. In truth they were communicating with each other via headset radios, softly mumbling to each other as they inspected their snow tools. |

While in their sno-cat together—some of the Kiru Taoese had decided to ride with Arthur—Sugichi nodded, patting where his holster was strapped within his parka. "Of course I'm armed," he said, answering the question. "I never leave home without my gun." |

The last Sno-Cat in the convoy contained two Sicilians and a Sardinian, a Russian, a Hungarian, and a Nagian. Dr. Michael Piroddi, the Sardinian, was driving the vehicle. After they had been travelling for some time, he no longer could see the vehicles in front of him. “We’ve taken a wrong turn,” he said flatly. “You’ve taken a wrong turn,” one of the Sicilians responded sharply. The other Sicilian scanned the outside nervously. He had been the navigator. The Hungarian attempted to radio in to the rest of the expedition, in hopes of finding their way back to the convoy. Each attempt resulted in only static. Something seemed to be blocking the signal. As he kept trying to get a signal, the first, hot-tempered, Sicilian started to voice his concerns. “Must be all this damn snow,” the Sicilian expelled. His name was Salvatore Greco. “I swear,” he continued, “I thought this place was supposed to be like a damn desert. You know, no precipitation.” “It varies,” the Nagian pronounced matter-of-factly, “Some parts of Antarctica, especially the coastal areas, have high amounts of snowfall, while much of the interior, including our destination, is under desert conditions.” The second Sicilian gazed down in shame. He said, “So that means I’ve probably turned us the wrong way.” Before any of them could respond, the Russian, who had heretofore been silent, spoke. The Russian had been trained as a sniper, and Yshurak and Russia had made sure that every Sno-Cat had at least one trained gunman on board. “I see something,” he said. His eyes were keen from his sniper training. Travelling closer, they saw a glint of colored fabric: a Russian uniform. The Russian began making preparations to stand up, go outside, and investigate. It was debated whether all should got out or whether only a few should go out into the snow. Finally restlessness won out, and the entire assembled team gathered their gears to step outside to investigate. The Russian went out first, and approached the object. It appeared to be a body wearing a Russian uniform. It seemed safe, and he signaled the others to approach. They rushed toward him, and soon they found that his judgment had been mistaken. The earth and snow and ice had been strong enough to hold the one man but collapsed quickly under the weight of six men, who then found themselves within an enclosed cavern. ***** Ixion held his listening device up against the stone wall, hours later, straining to hear what the researchers were saying. At about that time Sisyphus and Tantalus entered the room, the latter carrying several packs that had been left outside when the investigators had been trapped. “Well?” Ixion asked. “No luck,” Sisyphus answered, “They aren’t the ones we’re hunting for. Just the dupes.” “I searched the pack,” Tantalus commented, “Nothing much to remark. But some of their food is in here.” Ixion nodded. The trap had worked, though he would have preferred other quarry. Sisyphus turned to Ixion. “What about the cavern? Is it secure?” “Yes,” Ixion responded, “Our preparations will hold; they have tested the walls. We can let them out or go in to get them, but they should not be able to get out on their own.” “Should we interrogate them?” Tantalus asked. “No,” Ixion responded, “I am listening to their conversations, and I have confidence that if they have discovered anything of importance, I am sure they will mention it. Also, we want to release someone back with the planted information, so we do not want them knowing of our presence. The Doctor will kills us if these suckers find out about us before we find out about the real enemies.” ***** Six men sat in a cavern. They took turns sleeping, and some of them carefully ate the portions of food that they had with them. The Russian was reading aloud and translating a note in his native language that had been found on the body. Only portions of the letter were readable: “…planted an oasis in the desert… recovered flora for testing purposes…oh holy Theotokos death incarnate…outside of native habitat…it is unclear what perverse science allow for such a revival…Boris insists that it was a relict population in a newly discovered green zone… artificial, must be artificial…smilodon evolution’s freak…hope somebody’s reading…” The body, and it had once been a human body, had been mauled and even partially consumed by something. For some time they discussed the remarks. After several days, the rations were running thin. The Sicilian, Greco, had started to snap at those whom he thought were eating too quickly. Others seemed like they might start fights… but they chose to conserve energy instead. All the while, the Russian clutched his gun tightly. ***** “Where are you going,” Tantalus asked Sisyphus. “I’m going to feed them,” Sisyphus responded. “Ixion said that he wanted them alive, to leave with the false information, remember?” “Ixion also said that they were not to catch a glimpse of us. If you can get the food to them, they’ll know what’s up. And Ixion won’t be too happy.” “Fuck Ixion, the Doctor won’t be happy. And that won’t be good for any of us. So no food then.” At about that time Ixion entered the listening area. Silently he put his listening device to the wall, and after withdrawing it, he asked, “what was that about the food?” Tantalus responded, “No food. If we feed them they will know.” Sisyphus asked sharply, “So if want them to live should we let them out now?” “Not yet,” Ixion remarked sharply. “Look,” Tantalus laughed, “that cavern is full of meat. Whoever wants to live will live.” Ixion nodded. Let them test these investigators. ***** It would be weeks before the two surviving remaining men were released to find their team and report what happened. They had discovered some tantalizing and disturbing hints about the secrets of the cold lands before the antarctic winds blew open a hole in the cavern. But would either man ever be willing to narrate what had happened in the cavern? |

It didn't take long for the convoy of sno-cats carrying the investigators to notice that they had lost track of one of their own. Their progress had halted and two of the vehicles were sent out to search the immediate area for their companions. Hours passed before the two sno-cats returned to the camp. They had no luck in finding the lost investigators. "Antarctic wilderness is very dangerous and easy to get lost in," Samantha had commented to Ivan. "I've tried getting them on the radio, but no one is responding. Unfortunately, the worst could have happened." Ivan merely nodded before he organized everyone to resume their journey. It took roughly a week to reach Vostok, with intermittent campsites stretched out across the icy, desert expanse between the lone station and Oasis II. Eventually arriving at the seemingly abandoned station that stood not far from the frozen lake of its namesake became a certain sight for sore eyes. The trained Russian and Yshurakan gunmen spread out to patrol the area while the rest of the international team of investigators moved into the station itself. What they found was a certain sign of struggle. The various doors within had been battered open with significant force, revealing that someone had forced their way in. Other clues were the numerous bullet holes that riddled various walls and tables within the station's eatery and connecting hallways. What seemed most curious of all; however, was the complete absence of blood or bodies. "Someone has cleaned up the scene of the crime as well as they could," Sugichi said, crouching down to feel over a number of holes that passed through the floor. "Someone doesn't want us to know what actually happened here." There were grim nods of agreement all around. Suddenly there was a noise heard from the kitchens. Everyone's attention was drawn toward it. "Let's go check out what that was," Ivan said before leading the way in. Just as enough people filed into the kitchen, all saw the door of a food closet swing shut. Ivan ran over to it and opened it wide, handgun cocked and ready. He looked around at the shelves and then down at the floor. His eyes were wide and surprised. It was Dr. Mikael Erkko from the missing science team, covered with month long hair and beard growth. He was mumbling something incoherent as he rocked back and forth in a sitting position on the floor. He turned his head to face Ivan then, and then let out a terrified scream before trying to scramble behind one of the shelves, bringing it crashing down in the process, food spilling everywhere. Ivan lowered his gun and holstered it while two other Yshurakan investigators moved over to restrain the mad Dr. Erkko. "I saw them! I SAW THEM!" Dr. Erkko shouted frequently as he struggled against the restraining grips. Ivan was about to ask who he saw when one of his gunmen came into the kitchen from outside. "Sir, you really need to see this..." the soldier said grimly. Ivan looked at him. "See what?" "We found something out on the field of ice," the soldier replied. "Something... unusual." "Take me there," Ivan said. He looked to the rest of the investigators that came with him into the kitchen. "See that Dr. Erkko is well taken care of. I want him coherent for when we question him later about what transpired here." With that, he let the Yshurakan soldier lead him out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ivan stared at the deep, circular depression in the ice and the charred, burnt exposed earth underneath. Such a feature within the Antarctic was truly an unusual one. He had to rub his eyes with his gloved hand to convince himself what he was seeing was real. "You say... its how big?" he asked. "We measured it to be around ten meters in diameter," answered the gunman that stood at his side. "I've... never seen anything like this." "Nor I," responded Ivan. "Take as many pictures as you can. I'll get the more scientifically inclined among us to examine this site." |

Vera Kurchatov was sadden. For months now she held out on the belief that her sister was alive. Finally making it to the labs all hope was crushed. Secretly she mourned inside for her dead sister, yet he actions outside were of a woman composed, yet filled with rage for what had happen to everyone in the labs. When Ivan return from outside, Vera approached him. "Have we learned anymore from Dr. Erkko?" she asked. Ivan shook his head no. "He must know more than he is letting on, we must press him hard to remember." said Vera. "Has anything else come up of any great interest?" |

"I have a number of people looking after Dr. Erkko," replied Ivan Prigovosk coolly. "Anyway, yes... something has indeed come up. Our armed escort has discovered a curious, melted depression in the ice a couple dozen yards from the station. The earth at the bottom looks like it was burnt by some kind of heavy radiation. "I want our scientific experts to have a look at it... figure out what may have caused such a thing." |

Vera Kurchatov shook her head in agreement. "I'll have my experts begin testing with your science team at once. I can't image anything legal be able to make such a mark up here. Perhaps some kind of bomb left over from some war? Perhaps some country was using this area as an illegal testing zone. We must find out what happened here." Vera continued to get check-ins from the rest of the Russian team that had come with her. By now everyone had had their chance to comb the entire facility and no one found anything other than Dr. Erkko and the slight signs that something happen and someone was trying to clean it up. Finally Vera got information they distressed her even more than the idea that her sister was in fact gone. "What do you mean we can't find the Sicilians?" she asked a lieutenant. He informed her that they never showed up with the rest of the group and radio contact proved impossible. "Damn" she said "Well then go the garage of the station, they should have at least one or two snow cats of their own. Check them out and if they still operate well enough, re-track our route and see if you can find them. I won't be responsible for losing more life out here." The soldier saluted and then assemble a team of four to go with him. They checked to garage to find that indeed the two snow cats of the facility were still there. After checking them out, they found that they were in fact still operational. Checking their map, they headed back out following the same route that had led them there, going back to Oasis II. Little did Vera know it would be the last time she'd see them. She herself then went on looking through the facility, hoping to come across her sister's personal quarters. |

OOC: What's going on with that? IC: The Nagian team was on edge, glad when they reached Vostok. The unexpected loss of Vibius Artorius to the wilderness so early in the expedition had raised tensions – the Nagians insisted on driving or navigating in the sno-cats they were travelling in. Atius and Horatius were most interested in the giant crater. Whatever caused it was a matter of great interest – the first thing the Nagian team did was take geiger counter readings, deciding to continue the investigation into the craters origins from there... Modius and (the surviving) Artorius, on the other hand, were busy examining the bullet holes. Lacking a forensics lab, definitive answers would be hard to find, but an examination of the damage could be used to assess what types of guns were used... which might help pinning down a culprit... No-one on the Nagian team was concerned about the Sicilians, and they were all content to let someone with better social skills handle Dr. Erkko... Edited by Nag Ehgoeg, Aug 15 2008, 02:14 PM.

Ivan Prigovosk saw to assigning a number of scientists to the mysterious depression in the Antarctic ice. Two Yshurakans, one Russian, and the Nagians checked it out with a Geiger counter. What resulted was the discovery of an alarming amount of localized radiation. The counter revealed a level of 500 to 600 counts per second within the circle of charred earth and melted ice. Such a level was dangerously lethal to humans during prolonged exposure, thus the scientists wasted no effort in climbing back out of the depression. Upon doing so, the counter immediately dropped down the scales toward safer, normal levels. Whatever happened in that depression seemed to be localized to that spot. Now they could only wonder at the cause. Some manner of new nuclear weapon? One Yshurakan looked at the other. "I feel fine. Do you feel fine?" A nod was his answer and he looked at everyone else. "How about you or you? I don't think were in there longer than a few minutes...." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Samantha Tizigorcski watched the two Russians hurry off with two sno-cats into the distance with complete dumbfoundedness. She didn't approve any sort of venture. As the head guide of this investigation effort, no one was to go off on their own without her approval. Considering they were Russian, she knew immediately to confront. She caught Vera Kurchatov in one of the labs, looking over the data left behind by the missing science team. "Vera!" The Russian woman turned her head to face the guide. "What do you think you're doing, sending out people by themselves?" demanded Samantha. "The Sicilians are missing," Vera answered. "I sent out the soldiers to look for them." "I know the Sicilians are missing!" Samantha shrieked. "Everyone in this damn international team knows the Sicilians are missing! They were in the sno-cat that got separated from us a few days ago, remember? We searched for them for a few good hours but couldn't find them! I even tried radioing them. You're only risking the chance of us losing more people. What were you thinking?" Vera simply stared at her blankly. The woman was under so much stress over her sister, she wasn't thinking clearly. Sam turned around and left, exasperated. Quickly she tried radioing the two men Vera sent out, but received nothing but static for her troubles. Sam quietly cursed the situation. Such incompetence would get them all killed. |

"There might be a Hazbot in the station somewhere," one of the Yshurakans said before leading the way back. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Samantha's eyes widened at the fragmented words over the radio. There were survivors from the lost sno-cat after all. She attempted to let them know help was on the way. "Do you read me? This is Samantha Tizigorcski. Two sno-cats have been sent out to look for you. Help is on the way. I repeat, help is on the way! Over." She took in a brief breath of relief. Perhaps Vera hadn't acted foolishly after all. She bit her lower lip, feeling guilty for chewing the woman out. She turned around to apologize and tell Vera of what she had just learned. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kiru Taoese investigators, Takahashi Sugichi, Katsunoya Shiki, and Nakagura Kadu, were looking over Dr. Mikael Erkko in the bunk room of the station. The clearly traumatized man had been muttering incoherently throughout the hours they had been watching him. Eventually, the things he was saying were starting to make sense. "...the soldiers came..." he mumbled. Sugichi blinked, and leaned forward. "Soldiers? What soldiers?" "...Americans... came with guns... broke in and...." Dr. Erkko shivered on the mattress. "And what, Dr. Erkko? What did the Americans do?" Sugichi asked, probing further. "...killed EVERYONE!" Kadu held Dr. Erkko down as he tried to leap from the bunk. "Oh god... everyone's dead.... I hid underneath the station. ...They didn't find me. Been alone here... ever since...." The devastated man began to cry. Sugichi looked to Shiki. "Tell everyone that we may have our answers at last." The woman nodded and hurried out of the room. |

Dr. Artorius was working in the corridor outside of Erkko's room when Shiki bustled out. Recieving the news, he relayed the information to the other Nagians over their hand held radios. Once people had gathered into the station's bunk room, the interview with Dr. Mikael Erkko continued. He was wrapped in a blanket and handed a warm cup of coffee. Graciously he sipped from it. "Dr. Erkko, are you sure it was Americans you saw?" Ivan Prigovosk asked, standing at the forefront of the group. "No question..." Dr. Erkko mumbled in response. A bit of warm coffee dribbled down his beard. "No question about it. I could see the appropriate marks on their parkas...." "I want there to be some certainty," Ivan said, "so I'll need to know this. Currently there are two nations claiming to be the United States of America. Can you clarify for everyone which it is?" Mikael nodded briefly. "The original one, currently run and operated by Goreprime Enterprises. The markings, I saw the corporate logo above their national flag. There was no mistaking... the combination." A grim expression crossed over Ivan's face. This implicated a very powerful and difficult opponent. He glanced to the rest gathered within the room. "Any other questions for Dr. Erkko?" |

The Tutchone professor stood slowly, exhaling carefully as he looked to the one before him. It was a careful balance, he thought, to handle this kind of thought. Looking about carefully, he tried to examine the man relative to this enclosed environment, hoping to place some sort of psychological revelation as an epiphany to the situation. That being said, there was nothing to be found by this thought. Rather, he had only increased his own confusion. |

"No, No" said Vera as Samantha confronted her a second time with the apology. "You were right to yell at me, I am not all there in my head. The lost of my sister, the reality of it I mean, has clouded my judgment. Perhaps sending those soldiers out was more of my attempt to find my sister alive out there somewhere more than it was to find the missing team." Vera's eyes began to fill up but she refused to cry. There was a mystery still to solve. The time to mourn for her sister would come but it wasn't here and now. Wiping away the few small drops of tears she had, she smiled. " I promise to not make such a rushed decision again without you discussing it with you first though I am glad to know that my actions may save that party after all. I pray that those soldiers will find them and bring them to us soon." The Russian soldiers were hours out into the wilderness when the broken message came over the radio. Quickly they responded in Russian, hoping to get a response. They kept the radio open, trying everything they could to boost the single while the repeated their message, leaving only a few minutes between the repeat for a response. Using the single, they followed a new course hoping it was more correct to where the missing team was. They'd need another message from the Sicilians and the others to ensure they were on the right track. "Yes, Yes" said Vera after hearing Dr. Erkko's story "what did they want, what information could have have gathered or had that would have....." Vera stopped for a moment when she realized what the Americans might have wanted. The Team had radioed that they had seen the jets, could the attack have been to shut them up, destroy the evidence that they were there. She finally discussed these ideas with the others before continuing on to question the doctor. "Dr. Erkko, tell me where did you see the jets you reported? Did you have any idea where they came from or were going?" |

The Russian soldiers were relieved when a message finally came from the missing team. Keeping their comrade on the radio, they used the signal as a compass, triangulating their position and finally coming to the rescue of the missing team. Carrying them into the snow-cats, they quickly got them the emergency heat packs and blankets and then began a trip back to the rest of the group. Not exactly sure of their location, the Russians again began sending out signals in hopes of someone back at the station picking them up. While they began to trek away, one of the Russians turned to the snipper and asked him in Russian. "What the hell happened out there?" |

Dr. Mikael Erkko nodded, eyes wide and bloodshot. "Yes... as Vera's postulated, I don't think the Americans wanted anything aside from silencing us," he said, peering back toward a nearby window fearfully. "The jets we saw; however, according to our guide, came from the southwest of this region, further inland. They were heading north as far as I can guess. "I cannot imagine what they could be doing out there to resort to such tactics...." |

Professor Arthur Greywolf was pensive for a moment before turning about, "I take it, then, that would suggest that these actions are actually those actions of their Government. If they are, this could be far larger than any of us originally postulated. Recall the very begining of these events. We conjectured anything. Are we any further? Have we really ruled anything out? No." |
