Okay, so I'm in a college-level music theory class, and, for the most part, there isn't much more for us to learn. So: my teacher has dropped hints that we're going to write a major composition, possibly for our respective ensembles (band for me, I play tuba), possibly ending up with him helping us publish it.

So, I put forth a query to you all: Were I to write a symphony, what should I write it about?

'Symphonique No.1 in Bb Minor, Ode du le Norris'

I've been trying to write a minuet for tuba, triangle, and pack-a-day smoker.

It sounds terrible.

You could write one about any of the Rps your in, using musical notes to underscore the main themes and plots of the story.

well, as a pack-a-day smoker, I would be happy to hack up a few for the cause.

Minuet and trio for four tubas and double reeds. Double reeds, of course, without the use of oboes and bassoons!

I've never liked the spelling of Symphony. <_<

My suggestion for the topic is quite simple, write it about something that you can easily fill up a symphony about... No, but seriously, something you enjoy, or are knowledgable about is the way I would go...

I say you pay tribute to the wonderful music of silence. You play a single note, and let it die out slowly, before basking in the power of silence afterwards, and then ending with another sharp, loud note. In this way, you do minimal work, but still are seen as an intelligent artist full of creativity and ingenuity.

I think John Cage did it.

4'33

4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence.

I think you should rewrite a full score to "Spring time for Hitler" or compose someting based off of a real war.

"His Master Al Qulaa now performs his piece "Crimean War in A Major" with the help of the trans-siberian orchastra,"

Or make a national anthum for one of your countries :P

kk, I've got the assignment, 150 measures, 20th century-style.

A kid in my class took a sharpie and blindly threw dots all over the paper.

That's an actual compositional technique called Aleatory Music.

It also sounds terrible.

This is exactly why most serious music of the late 20th century sucks big time. Wait, the Indiana Jones Theme is 20th century - upper part reversed, lower part inverted, overlayed! You're done!
