Hispania had reached the borders of the province known as Madrid. Millions of Andorrans, and the Rafzakaeli mercanaries, were trapped on the other side. At 8:00 pm, on May 1st, 2008, Hispania offered the Andorrans the right of surrender. They refused. --------------- "We should not exclude the nuclear possibility, Romano." "I will not nuke my hometown. I will not see a WMD detonate on Iberian soil." "A nuclear weapon would save millions of lives. They are holed up in that city like rats. Many will die in this war." "The union of states is a bloody affair - I will not destroy Madrid. Order the attack." ---------------- Safe within Hispanic lines, artillary began pounding the city garrisons. Several outlying villages were completely reduced to rubble, to make room for the impending attack, while some of the most populated centers of Madrid were stricken quickly. The artillary was careful to avoid areas of historical significance, and of cultural identity. As a result, the Andorran government quickly relocated major field hospitals to these centers, taking advantage of the Hispanic desire to occupy a preseved Spanish city, rather than a pile of rubble. After nearly a week of constant bombardment all through the province, Hispania was prepared to move forward. The largest force would attack from the Northern Sierra (Sierra Norte, Map 2) while smaller WRK supporting forces would attack Jarama and Guadarrama. A secondary Hispanic force would attack Tajo in the south, in the same numbers as the Northern Sierra offenive. The Andorran Free State was trapped in all directions, and there would be no escape besides surrender. Again Hispania offered surrender to Andorra and the Syndicat. If they accepted, the lives of millions would be saved. If they refused, the Seige of Madrid would surely make Tbilisi look like a minor skirmish. This affair would be amongst the bloodiest the world had ever seen. |

Madrid had been surrounded by the enemy. Across the country, Andorran troops had fought valiantly to keep the Hispanics out, but eventually nearly the whole of the Andorran armed forces had fallen back to this city of culture, to make one last stand against the forces of Hispania. The resulting battle would soon prove to be the bloodiest the world had ever known. An army of over ten million patrolled the province in the name of Andorra- meanwhile, millions of Hispanic and Roman troops came to the offensive. Throwing the forces of The Synidicat and the residents of Madrid into the equation as well, this battle would be more epic than any in history- and with both sides equally as determined to come out on top, the only peace would be called after every last man from the other side had perished. The Hispanic offer to surrender was laughed at. Andorra was ready to defend Madrid at all costs- now was the final battle, and it would prove to be one hell of a show. The world's eyes turned to Iberia. |

It was a calm sunny day when Hispania recieved the rejection of surrender from Andorra. In the skies, high above the cloud line, Hispanic bombers roared across the province, dropping millions of leaflets unto the city below.
Artillary fire began again, striking the city, as Hispanic forces crossed the Andorran borders, and begun the Seige of Madrid. |

The Syndicat administration had long since declined to surrender. None of the Directors, nor Ostankov, were pleased with this decision, but business came first; and nobody would hire mercenaries who turned tail and ran at the first sign of trouble. So-called "valuable presonnel," along with any aircraft and IFVs left intact, had been evacuated just before the jaws of Hispanic air superiority closed over Iberia. First Sergeant O'Neill was back on his home soil, but it didn't sit easy that he had to leave his men behind. They had been stripped of their weapons and armor - the Syndicat guarded its secrets to a fault - and left only their training and raw skill, which was not unformidable. |

Spain was an old land. Known as Hispania in the Latin tongue and Iberia in the Greek, she had an ancient Roman heritage and before that she had been under the domain of the Punics, until Carthage gave way to Rome. For all these reasons, the affairs of the Spaniards bore a particular interest to the Romans, though many accused the Romans of meddling in affairs that were not their own. But either way, it came to pass that in those days when the Spaniards were fighting amongst themselves, the Romans sided with the King in Aragon and not the Republic in Castille. The reasons for this were quite obvious. For one thing, the King Hannibal was of Roman heritage, and he reigned over a land that was commited to the Roman heritage. Secondly, George, who was King among the Romans, had wisely obeyed the words of Eusebius who recognized that polyarchy was merely anarchy, and for this reason chose to intervene on the side of the monarchy. The Aragonese, who are properly named the Spaniards, fought to establish the unity of their country under lawful authority. The Castillians, who are properly named rebels, fought so that they may tempt other nations to open strife the Our Lord Jesus Christ. For this reason also, the Romans were obligated to side with the Spaniards. In doing so, they fought in a manly way, full of valor. On the other hand, the rebels were characterized primarily by a womanish spirit, hardly having the courage to face their betters. For this reason, they were quickly assaulted by the Spaniards and the Romans and driven into their citadel, which was known as Madrid. At this time, the rebel commanders, disgusted with the manifold cowardice that marked their cause, were determined to make a showing of bravery so that at least in defeat they might be recognized as Spaniards. So the final battle of the Spanish War was a bloody one. But first, a few words regarding the city of Madrid. The city seems to have been founded as the town Matrice by the Romans, in ancient times. However, there are stories of its habitation in older ages, and for this reason many folk legends have spread about it. However, these seem to be little more than wives' tales, and do not merit repeating here. It suffices to say that by this time, Madrid had grown into one of the largest and most splendid cities in all of Spain, and for this reason, it was an ideal bastion for the rebels. But the Romans had assembled a mighty force, and coordinated their assaults with the Spaniards, they entered the great city. |

Posted Image The ground rumbled as hundreds of tanks entered the province along the major highways in the north. For the first mile, it was easy going, but alas, the Andorrans had finally decided it was time to make a stand. The Hispanic advance had barely gotten started before it was bogged down against enemy fire. Rows after rows of mobile artillary and tanks fired into the enemy lines. In front of them, and around them, squads of infantry men were prepared to fend off any frontal assault on the mechanized lines. Rocket attacks were the only real danger, but hundreds of snipers scanned the enemy lines, taking out most would be anti-tank infantry. This isn't to say they stopped them all. As the hours crept by, a vehicle along the line would take a direct hit, and be incapacitated. The squadsmen around it would disperse, and join up other ones. All the time, however, Hispania continued a strategy of constant forward movement, even if only an inch at a time. While the first mile took under ten minutes, the second took the greater part of half a day. It would be this way all the way until Madrid, a constant battle for every last stone lying between them and the Republic. Villages along the way would not be searched by the active armed forces. Rather, Hispania had developed a strategy of bombardment of all but the most important historical landmarks. The majority of the villages in the region where nothing but rubble now, and no longer supply depots for the advance Andorran guard. But Romano's insistance on preserving historical sites soon created a natural problem, and it was not long into the war until medieval warfare became a common site - armies giving seige to enemy garrisons, holed up in castles, or fortresses along the landscape. This was a sight not seen in centuries. Even as Cerdone landed men in Quoan, the Seige for Madrid was merely getting started. By the end of the first week, the Hispanic troops had advanced exactly eleven miles into enemy territory. Several thousand were dead on either side. |

OOC: My computer is being strange right now, sorry for the weak reply. Hispania's armies may have been advancing towards Madrid, but it was a long journey there. Men were being slaughtered as fast as they could be seen, and the Hispanics made easy targets for the massed defense of Madrid Province. Andorra's armies had taken it upon themselves to defend this small territory. Now, the army of a state that was formerly amongst the world's top ten powers was heavily concentrated and infuriated in Madrid Province, Andorra. To the outside world, it looked as though the fight for Andorran sovereignty was already lost. Even the northern allies had appeared to abandon their Iberian brothers. Things did not look good. Thousands from each side had already perished- and the West Roman advance had not even reached its full potential. Andorra's men continued on bravely. Faced with constant bombardment, they had to come to grips with heavy losses both before and during battles. |

The war was slow-going, but the situtation was quite bleak for the Andorran Free State. Even as the Republic of Lithuania announced its independence, and Cerdone seemed to be leading the Madrid Pact to a huge victory in Northern Europe, the combined Hispanic-WRK advance left Southern Europe a shining bastion of ToK victory over the Madrid Pact. The invasion had thus far lasted less than two months. In that time, the Andorran military, having once been heralded as one of the strongest in the world, had collapsed, and was now huddled around the last remnant of Andorra - Madrid. Against all odds, Hispania had won, and Romano would not allow that to go to waste. When it was cloudy enough, Hispanic bombers flew over Andorra, taking advantage of the ground-based Anti-aircraft's blindness. Powerplants were bombed, railroads destroyed, and the Andorran people found themselves mostly without electricity, fuel, or much food. You cannot shuffle the army, and a large portion of the population into a tiny space with no reinforcements and expect to hold out long. If Hispania really desired it, they would merely stand around the country, starving it into submission. But that would take time, time Hispania did not have, for the Cerdonian military machine seemed unstoppable, and they needed a quicker victory. Without electricity or fuel, most hospitals failed. Hispania became an angel of mercy for injured soldiers, and reports of Andorran men simply discarding their guns and running to Hispanic lines for food, and medical treatment had surfaced. Morale was running low, and while Hispania alone probably couldn't beat Andorra militarily, it certainly could create the illusion that it had - profoundly. Had it been wintertime, the Andorran people would have been forced to surrender the minute the last power plant in the city was bombed into dust. Gunfire now became a common sound throughout the province, as the sounds of battles reached the city from all directions. Artillary had blasted most of Madrid into a shell of its former self, only the Old City remaining intact, and the last major hospital in the old Royal Palace at the center of that. Soon enough, however, Romano gave the artillary permission to strike that. If these men were going to use history as their shield, then so be it. |

OOC: I'm going to jump ahead a few weeks in the timeline, to when Cerdone falls. IC: There was no aid coming from the north. Cerdone had fallen. It had been a bloody affair, but Hispania had cornered what was left of the Andorran army into the city of Madrid. They halted their advance. No resupplies, no aid, no food, no fuel, nothing was coming. They would simply wait until Andorra surrendered, or until internal revolution forced it to. In Barcelona, Zaragoza, and Cordoba, the war was already over, and the Hispanic crown had unified the nation at last. Celebrations lasted al through the night, with massive displays of fireworks. Approval ratings for Romano and the Falange skyrocketed. Their people were at last one. From every city to every village in Hispania, from every garrison in occupied Andorra to the frontlines, there was only celebration. At that time, in a last wild frenzy, the Andorran government chose to attack. It was a powerful offensive, aiming at attacking the northern lines and breaking through to the coast. All that was left of the Andorran army flooded the northern section of the city, and at the strike of midnight, charged the celebrating Hispanic lines. They easily tore through, and quickly made their way across the northern half of the province. But they had left their home unguarded, and Hispania took advantage of that fact. Even as the Andorran military won a series of victories in the north, the Hispanic flag paraded down into Madrid, and by the end of the night, wove proudly over El Palaccio Real, the last bastion of Andorran power, and the final seat of its government. The people, if not the military, were defeated, and Hispania quickly set out to stop the rouge army operating out of Northern Madrid. In the meantime, an emergency session of the Hispanic National Congress passed several new laws, and announced its intention to hold elections.

(OOC: Dunno if this should be here, but whatever...) IC: Posted Image Although we are disappointed to have seen so much bloodshed in this conflict, we are glad that the Kingdom of Spain has taken steps over the course of the war to reduce casualties and war crimes to a minimum. And we are also just simply pleased to see that Iberia is finally at peace once again. Thus, the Kingdom of Vespery, having come out of a fairly long period of isolation, hereby recognizes the new borders and territories of the Kingdom of Spain as legitimate. We do ask in return, however, for the recognition of the Iberian Peninsula as not merely Spanish, but also Vesperian, and that our two nations can share the peninsula in peace. |
