The PSU now realizes that in its current state of neutraility it will never be able to survive through this war. Germany has made attacks on Polish soil and as such the PSU will not let such raids go unheeded. The Polish Separatists Union now declares war on the Empire of Germany.

The granting of military access to a nation at war with your neighbor is not a hostile action? Germany welcomes this state of war, so that it might put a forceful end to the gross hypocrisy of the Polish.

-The PSU offers no formal response-

There was no question in anybody's mind that Çerdoné's military was superior to any single enemy combatant if they were to be taken alone- the scenario, however, happened to be different. Çerdoné was faced with the hostile armies of Quaon, Menhad, Germany, and Belgium, and had to be on its guard in case Pascoag decided to invade as well. This state of multi-frontal warfare greatly compromised the Çerdon war making capacity, and were now testing the very fabric of Çerdon society.

In Germany, the operation still moved well. Lübeck was now considered a Çerdon-administered city, which was pleasing. Resistance had been fierce, but in the end was pushed away. The population of the city was still hostile and non-compliant with the invaders' rule, but the Çerdons managed to maintain their hold regardless.

The Çerdon navy had its handful as well, effectively being charged with the task of securing the entire Baltic Sea on its own, with assistance from Porcu and the rest of the allies, of course. German submarine operations were becoming immense annoyances to supply lines, though they had yet to deal any truly devastating blow. Çerdoné of course countered by producing more and more submarines of its own to counter the German threat. In addition, Çerdoné mined huge portions of the Baltic Sea quite randomly, and sent the charts of mined areas to the allies so that they would not be mistakenly targeted.

In Quaon, things progressed smoothly. An army of 200,000 Çerdons, with some Porcuian aid as well, now stood outside of the gates of Minsk, with a 95% chance of attaining victory in that city. An army of 300,000, with substantial aid from Porcu, was now poised to take Kiev. Victory over Quaon rested on this army- it would be a close struggle, but the results would determine the war.

Things on the home front, however, were not going as planned. Riots broke out in Çerdoville, the city of two billion. Protests against the deaths of soldiers, the break from isolation, the endangerment of European security, and the corner the country had backed itself into were popular. Police had their hands full trying to manage the increasingly militant population. Prime Minister Chevalier's approval rating had plummeted rapidly.

One active force in ensuring the political instability of Çerdoné was that of the Communist Party, headed by Robert Niépcé. He had contacted the Quaonians at the start of the war, and pledged to aid them in their quest for victory- he was even promising to overthrow the government in an effort to increase Quaonian influence. He had come to top the Çerdon most wanted list, however kept hidden. In the time between now and the establishment of a Communist Çerdoné, he sat back, fueled the fires of protest, and stayed hidden from the watchful eyes of the government.

"Work is the curse of the drinking classes."

Maximus Verus sat around the crudely built fire that he and his fellow tank crewmen had created in order to heat their rationed coffee. Not particularly appealing to the eyes the food ration had all essential food groups, providing maximum nutrient content, and also included a small packet of coffee powder which was to be mixed with water that the soldiers also received a daily ration of.

The scene was picturesque, a Panzerkampfwagen IV behind four men huddled around a small fire enjoying the best they could their army-class coffee with a sun that had just set moments ago, the red-orange tint still in the western sky but mirrored by the onsetting black of night and the bright stars that accompanied it from the East.

The Swiss-Roman Security Forces had performed well up to this point, the vast majority of offensive action being handled by Çerdoné, and while that was just fine for many within the army Lieutenant General Laraque was hoping that the soon upcoming battles for Minsk and Kiev would finally prove to all of Europe that the Swiss-Roman Security Force was something not to be taken lightly. And while one voice inside Laraque's head told him that his men would perform beautifully and that there was nothing to worry about in terms of training, equipment, or morale ever the flip-flopping pessimist/optimist another voice told him that these men had never seen real battle before and it should be expected that they get tossed around before finding their footing.

Varus gazed around the fire and then above his head, listening carefully to the sound of approaching Porcuian and Çerdon fighter-bombers who were most likely heading off towards Kiev. Varus knew that it was only a matter of hours before the new orders would come over the radio, calling him and his fellow crewmen to another uncertain day...

The column of FT 9 tanks proceded quietly crossing the bridge on the Elbe, the only point where some troops managed to hold the other bank .
There a Regiment of the Ducal guards held the attacks of an entire German Brigade, with a desperate determination .
The Major Prezlas, now the only superior officer of the regiment ( the colonel and the lieutenant colonel had been killed some days before ) saw the approaching tanks as did the Germans, taht started to fire at the bridge .
The Major shouted to the nearest company :" Cover them ! I want one pelothon with me to advance, go ! "
The group advanced fastly and took cover in a hole, forcing the Germans to fire there .
Meanwhile the Marslavan tanks crossed the bridge and fired their first shots, destroyng the German AA in the other bank .
The enemy withdrawed fastly to reorganised in another place .

" Now that the German offensive has been stopped, we need to take back the important industrial basin near the Elbe . Although the main industries are in Plzen, there are some iron and coal basins in their area, that may prove very useful for them .
The attack will happen in a limited front of 15 km and I want all the heavy artillery there, it will be a hell for the Germans .... "
Told general Kuhn at his staff .
" Are there some rectifications to do ? " he asked then .
" Sir, I think the aviation is insufficient to cover all the troops " said a colonel
" It's true, but we will ask to our Mircanian allies to collaborate with some fighters and Porcu or Cerdoné will surely help us with some planes . It's true that we have only one hundred fifty efficient fighters now .... colonel ! " he stated
" Yes sir "
" Call immediately the Cerdonian and the Mircanian commands we will ask some aerial support and I hope they will find a way to help us in some ways ..... "

OFFICIAL STATEMENT OF PRESIDENT ADAR

"The massacre which occured in Polish territory is an act of cowrady and evilness by the German forces that attack not only our military forces but also a neutral country which is linked to our nation by a strong fiendship. The Separatist Polish government considered this as an act of war and joined this stuggle together with us, Cerdoné Marslava and Porcu.
Thousands of us died fighting against a superior and coward enemy that attacked them from the sky. But here's our response to all of this.
I want to announce my last ececutive order. We are calling for a GENERAL MOBILIZATION. Weapons factory will double productions and other kinds of factories will also produce every kind of supplies or matirial our forces will need.
Our National Guard, alerted a month ago, completed its readiness preparation and now it's ready to protect the country so that the majority of our active forces will be deployed against the enemy. We are also planning to bring the number of our soldiers to about a million men and women. Exactly! Women will be allowed to join the army and fight together with men if they want.

But after an hard defeat I'm also nnoncing a victory of our strength gainst the German oppression machine. Our division have tenaciously defeated the german garrison in the enclave of Theurusia. However we only captured a small part and a number of them escaped in the countryside looking for refuge among the few families of german-origin linving in the region. We are not intentioned to comb streets and houses because we love our populace and those are techniques use by oppressors like Germans and Quaonians and we won't start oppression our own people looking for several dsperate soldiers.

Today is the day of changes. Lets start working together and togere we will bring us closer to victory!"

Our military is fully mobilized and a good 350,000 young poles, nearly a quarter of our military forces, are ready to open a new front in Germany. We would like to consult you on the idea of a joint Campaign with the sole intention of Capturing the capital of Germany, Berlin. This will, of course, cost many lives in the process requiring both of our militaries to invest more lives into the war effort if the Kaiser is to be knocked out.

We would like this offer, unfortunately the enemy is too strong to ettempt a quick and large scal invasion of bGerman territory. Yes, we may try to advance in German territory but we cannot think of making huge moves into Germany territory without the support and the soldiers of Cerdoné.
We think that the main objectives of this campaign on the Germany-PSU border is to defend the currnet borderline at all costs and to advance in German territory if possible. Our expeditionary army has been hardly hit by the Germans and we are reorganizing the units and healing wounded soldiers that can return to fight. Replacement vehicles and more units are coming from Mircania also because of the "General mobilization" ordered by president Adar.
In a few times we will have 300,000 well trained Mircanian soldiers including armoured and helicopter support. We need you to provide air cover with your fighters in event of another large scale bombing like the last one because we will send fighters too but most of them will be kept to defend our air space.

We wait for a reply and in the mean time our units are reaching the villages and towns on the PSU - Germany border, camping there and coordinating with your units stationed there. We would also lke to to start strrenghten the border defences with fortifications like bunkers and phillboxes that will make defence easier

Canton Rouge

Within a matter of seconds, all hell broke loose within the Canton Rouge Royal Palace, with a once tranquil regal setting exploding into a violent series of gunfights and explosions with the arrival of 1st Brigade of the 501st Commando on the scene. From the direction of the rising sun, dozens of Belgian helicopters swooped down in droves towards the utterly surprised Cerdone forces guarding the perimeter of the Royal Palace, unleashing a lethal malestrom of rocket, heavy machine gun, and cannon fire on the unsuspecting masses.

Entire columns of stationary Leclerc tanks parked outside the walls of the Palace were obliterated by salvos of Milan II anti-tank rockets fired from the weapons racks of assaulting Eurocopter Tigers, turning the once impressive sight of Cerdonian armor into a smouldering line of scrap metal. The heavy shells of Olekerion 30mm cannon smashed easily into the armor plate of lighter armored vehicles and bivouacs of the landborne footsoldiers present at the scene, slaughtering dozens of lives in minutes. With the heavily armored Tiger attack helicopters laying down a ferocious fusilade of fire on the still dumbfounded foe, the initial wave of Belgian Puma helicopters began their slow descent into the courtyard of the Royal Palace, their cargo of Special Air Commandos firing down on the beleagured foe as they approached the ground.

Lieutenant Ingram, perched slightly behind the safety line of the Puma helicopter he was riding in, immediately snapped into attention as the silhouettes of enemy soldiers came into his sight, lowering his modified FN 2000 assault rifle to unleash bursts of fire towards the Cerdonian forces. Beside him, a trio of Commandos responded in kind with the loud report of their P90 submachine guns, spraying several dozen armor-piercing 5.7mm rounds into the unfortunate bodies of two Cerdonian guards who failed to flee to cover in time. As Ingram's helicopter neared the dropzone, the men of the Special Air Commando quickly unlatched their safety hooks from the Puma's main safety line, reading their weapons for combat.

The helicopter had not even touched the ground when Ingram gave the order to dismount.

"1st Brigade!" bellowed Ingram over the cackle of gunfire, waving to his team of men within the helicopter, "501st! DIS-mount!!!"

Two burly SAC operatives, each wielding a large bullet-proof ballistic shield on their right arm, sprang firstmost into the confusion of the courtyard-turned-warzone with pistols in their hands, dropping into a crouching position before the opening of the Puma's transport bay to better cover their comrades. A few bullets struck the thick ballistic shields with a clearly audible *thunk*, effectively stopped from reaching their mark by the strength of the bulky material of the defensive object.

Ingram, leaping down from the helicopter's transport bay, quickly moved behind the two "shield men" for cover, followed by the remainder of his twelve man squad in a matter of seconds. Peeking his head over the safety of the two large shields, the Lieutenant fired several rounds of 5.56mm from his assault rifle at a group of panicky Cerdone troopers guarding the main entrance into the Royal Chambers, taking out a pair of enemy combatants and allowing his squad the opportunity to disperse into better cover.

Several squads of SAC operatives were already beginning to land within the courtyard alongside Ingram's men, quickly turning the tide of the gunfight overwhelmingly in favor of the Belgian Special Forces personnel. Above them, Colonel Callard's gigantic Osprey aircraft/helicopter could easily be seen getting in position for dropoff onto the roof of the Royal Palace, providing support fire for the squads in the courtyard with its twin .50 caliber machine guns.

"Zeus... Zeus..." called Ingram through his intercom headset, invoking the call sign of a Eurcopter Tiger pilot in the air, "Request immediate fire support on the entrance to Her Majesty's Royal Chambers... ASAP... Encountering fierce enemy resistance in the courtyard..."

Cerdonian reinforcements, pouring into the couryard through the main door of the Queen's Chambers, quickly moved to position with FAMAS rifles at ready, prepared to end the most unwelcome intruders with a heavy assortment of massed small arms fire. One Cerdonian Officer could clearly be seen ordering a machine gun crew to fire towards the dismounting Commandos from the distance, and was eventually dropped to the ground by a spray of gunfire courtesy of a Commando's P90.

Within seconds, the entrance to the Royal Chambers was nearly obliterated by a barrage of dumbfire rockets and 30mm cannon shells, wiping out the entire flood of fresh Cerdone troopers with its intensity... and leaving the way open to Ingram's men...

Suddently, on the river Helbe, a cannon begun to shot, the another, then an entire vbrigade and finally a whole heavy artillery division shot to the German positions in the other side of the river .
Th ebombing lasted three hours and destryed the surroundings creating giant holes in all the ground .
Then there was a sad silence .

Major Prezlas looked at his watch, it was one P.M ( apparently time for have a lunch ), he then stared at his men .
" Well guys, let's advance ! "
The whole brigade advanced covered by smoke shells and surprised the infantry brigade just in front of them, taking the first line .
However when they attempted to advance further, they were stopped by an intense machinegun fire .
At least they had taken position in the other bank of the river .

Mircanian troops on the PSU-Germany border had finised digging trenches, building barricades and heckpoints with amoured and cavalry units always ready for any attack.
Now the provvisorial defensive net of trenches and barricades was ready and Mircanian troops were ready for every kind of attacj. Ground troops were ready to fight and there were artillery units in strategical points and anti-aircraft vehicles positioned everywhere and hidden under camouflage nets.
This time the Germans couldn't try to attack like the last time. The Mircanians had radars that could detect enemy aircrafts and missiles hundred of kilometers away and missile batteries ready to shoot down enemy planes. There was also a larger air cover with more Mircanian fighters and the whole PSU air force.
The only way the Germans could attack was on the ground and the soldiers were wainting for this moment.
Replacement soldiers filled the favancies left by casualties and the 23rd Infantry divisioned was reconsitued, too. With the general mobilization have more vehicles was easier and now the Mircanian expeditionary fore in the PSU had more than 300,000 spread out all along the borderline working together with the polish army and a second line of fortifications as bunkers and phillboxes was beign built by the polish 3 Kilometers away.

Tanks of the 1st armoured division were spread all along the defence line and some of them were also hidden covered by camouflage nets in nearby bushes and woods. Centauro tanks destroyers were guarding every checkpoint and main barricade. Every armoured vehicle was enclosed with sandbags, steel nd every kind of metal wrecklage that could be useful to add horizontal protection to the vehicle.
Laser signal were also positioned in a straight line 500 meters from the trenches. Everyone and everything that crossed those lasers would active alarms and to pevent animalrs to pass there the lasers were sorrunded with nets and even if with the nets the lasers could be visible there was no way the Germans could pass there without beign detected several hundred meters from the defenses.
Minefield were also positioned near the trenches and only Mircanian and Polish soldiers knew were the mines were.
German soldiers had to work hard before penetrating the frontline.

The Menhadien troops deployed to Quaon and Germany where helping, the veterns of many wars gave aid to their allies the best way they knew how, killing enemy soldiers. The fighting was terrible as ToK soldiers tried to hold their homelands against Çerdoné, no quarter was given, none was asked for.

The Menhadiens also sent in air support, fighters played a deadly version of tag, but every one was it, and you tagged them with a missile.

Meanwhile in the Baltic, the Menhadien navy was assembled, and now ready for action the Menhadien fleet sailed towards their target, Çerdoné's fleet.

German Headquarters, deep below the streets of Berlin, were filled with the sounds of war. Men shouted in soundproofed bunkers, and typists clattered away while phones rang through all hours of the night. However, despite the perpetual chaos the war effort carried on, although deemed an honorable failure thus far.

On the Mircanian front the Germans had decided not to advance, instead digging in and maintaining a stalemate, a victory in itself due to the meager manpower left after Marslavan and Cerdon engagements. However, fresh troops from Menhad were en route, and the front appeared to be stable.

In Marslava, similar issues had forced Germany's advance to grind to a halt, and once more the High Command had consciously decided to hold up further offensives until some sort of static front could be won in the north. However, massive counterattacks had led to the retaking of one bank of the Helbe, leaving the two sides temporarily frozen thanks to defensive superiority and the aid of geography.

Cerdone had waged an effective if plodding war, slowly advancing outward from Lubeck. Germany's only advantage lay in the sky, but with the Luftwaffe's higher-ups fearful of surrendering even this advantage air operations had been limited to brief strafing on all fronts, with the majority of Germany's heavier aircraft located in the southeast. On the seas the German fleet was struggling to survive against Cerdon ships, but submarine tactics had begun to take their toll. As the gross tonnage of the kills grew, Cerdon troops were overheard complaining about meager rations, and ammo depots established in Lubeck suburbs were not as lush as Cerdone might have hoped.

The war was far from being won, but it had not been lost.

A Prince Amoung Men-Shoot First and Ask Questions Later
Mariam Yurkova had not been born in Quaon. She had not survived the revolution. She had not cheered when the declaration of war on Scythirus had been issued, though it directly affected her. Mariam Yurkova was a Georgian from Gori. During the Quaonion encampment in that city, she had fallen in love with Sergeant Peter Yurkova. He had been wounded in the bombing of Gori and had been sent back home to Quaon, and had brought Mariam with him.

They had been married soon afterwards, in Peter’s native Minsk. Mariam had become a nurse at the local hospital and when Peter recovered from his wounds he went back to work at a munitions factory. They had been content with their place in society. Then the war with Cerdone had started. Peter was not called up to serve, for which the both of them had been grateful. However, the war had a horrible way of sticking its ugly head into places that it shouldn’t.

A week ago, a Cerdon bomber had destroyed Peter’s factory. He had been killed in the attack. Mariam had been shocked; she really did love Peter, and Peter was her link to the Quaonion world. They had hoped to have children. They had hoped to perhaps move to Kiev. They had hoped for a great future under the Communist Republic and then some man hundreds of feet in the air had pressed a button and ended that future.

Peter hadn’t been very religious, but Mariam had seen to it that he received a proper Orthodox funeral. The funeral had been a very quiet and bitter one. Peter’s younger brother was fighting near the Baltic (she had never met the man) and Peter’s parents and sisters generally detested Mariam. After the funeral was over, they said not a word to each other and skulked off to their respective homes. The next day, the army had begun encamping at Minsk.

Mariam had had no choice but to go back to work. She could not take any time off for mourning when she was in such a critical profession in a time of war. Her hospital received injured soldiers every day. Some of them were beyond help, others in the same state of affairs that her husband had been after Gori. She did her best to help them, even those who were truly beyond help; she acutely knew the pain of losing a loved one, so much so that she would not wish it on her worst enemy.

Three days later, her hospital had been graced with the presence of Comrade Prime Minister Marco Casmiro, who was leading the forces. He was supposed to be raising the morale of the troops. He smiled at Mariam when he passed her by. She had been patching up a leg wound at the time. He also smiled at the soldier. He said a few words of encouragement, shook both their hands, and promised them victory

Two tense days had passed since that promise of victory. They had been tense days. More and more men were being brought the hospital and air bombings were increasing. She had been overworked, but she did not mind it all that much. It kept her mind off Peter.

Now it was early in the morning, just before dawn. An air raid warning was sounding. She forced herself out of bed and threw on a shirt and pants, making her way to the door. She was going to her neighbor’s home; he had a basement. The family that lived upstairs in her row home (they were both factory workers, thus making it efficient for that family to be paired with the Yurkovas) was walking down the steps to join her. The Bercues. They were nice enough people, though they had been slow in taking a liking to the Georgian immigrant living downstairs; they were a bit xenophobic.

Ivan Bercue carried a small pistol. What he thought he would do with it only God knew. He was a middle aged with arthritis who had fired a gun once in his life, and that time missing his target by a significant margin. Even if he was a decent enough shot, he’d never get a chance to take one against the invaders.

“Here we go again,” Ivan grunted, annoyed at being disturbed in his sleep. He groaned and made his way for the door. “Come on, come on,” he barked at his two female companions. His wife approached the door, as did Mariam. However, they never did make it to the door. Artillery shells began pounding at the street. As Mariam heard one hit the ground, she recoiled from the door in fright, save her life in the process. Both of the Becues were blown to pieces by a shell. Mariam’s eyes widened as she looked upon the remains of her former neighbors. She turned away, feeling sick.

The next several hours passed by in a blur. She dared not go outside; there were far too many shells and bombs falling all about for that. She stayed as far away as possible from the windows. Guns were firing in the distance. It took her a while to realize that meant the Cerdons had entered the city. When the realization hit her, she began sobbing.

The gunfire drew closer, ever closer. Soon enough she could hear the moans of wounded men. The war was coming down her very street. Grenades were let loose with wild abandon; bullets penetrated windows, the whole world was going to hell. She heard a scream, a terrible scream. A man was bleeding to death outside her blasted in door, by the bodies of the Becues. The Cerdon who had hit him had stopped firing. He must’ve moved on.

The soldier moaned, clutching his chest. In addition to his chest wound, he seemed to have taken a bullet to the leg. He was in a bad way.

Mariam couldn’t keep her eyes off him. He would die unless she helped him. She might die if she went over to help him, a stray bullet might hit her…but she couldn’t leave him. She crawled over to the man and, keeping her head down, pulled him away. Once he was securely in the house, she ran to her room to get some medical supplies. She returned with bandages and began to stop the man’s bleeding. Once she had done so, she moved him to her bed, where he would be more comfortable. She sat by his side, bringing him water whenever he needed it.

He did not say a word. He seemed too disoriented to even recognize where he was. He managed to gulp down the water he was offered, and let out an occasional moan, but that was the extent of the human interaction. Mariam hadn’t bothered to check his dog tags; his name was immaterial to her.

He was a young man, probably twenty-five or so. Perhaps he was a veteran of Georgia; he was old enough to be. Perhaps he wasn’t, and had enlisted to fight for his homeland. Perhaps he had enlisted to kill foreigners. Perhaps he had enlisted because he had nowhere else to go. Mariam didn’t know. What she did know was that she would not let this man be another casualty of the cruel war that had taken her husband’s life.

At last the man began speaking. His voice was raspy and he spoke in Ukranian, a language that Mariam only barely understood. However, she made out one thing he said: “Thank you.” She smiled, offering him water again. She began speaking in Russian, assuring him that everything would be fine. He nodded.

After a few minutes more of hesitant conversation revealed his name to be Joseph. She hadn’t been able to make out his last name; his voice had slurred it, and Mariam thought it rude to ask him to repeat himself.

After half an hour of mild conversation, he began talking about his family. Over the sound of men dying and bullets flying he explained how his father had fought in the revolution and had convinced him that it was his patriotic duty to enlist, just before Georgia erupted into war. He hadn’t been forced to serve there, thank God. Rather, he had been placed on reserve. He had married his sister’s best friend a few weeks before this new war broke out. She was from Draxis. His mother had died in the initial bombing of Kiev, and he was angry as hell over that fact.

Eventually the gunfire began dying down. Mariam hoped that meant the Quaonion forces had driven the invaders out of the city. She heard the sound of a man yelling and left her bedroom. There was a man in a Cerdon uniform shouting something in a foreign tongue at her. Quaon had lost, she realized. The soldier seemed angry, then turned around and called for one of his fellows. This one spoke broken Russian, and asked Mariam if any Cerdon or Quaonion soldiers were in her home.

Mariam knew these men were search her house regardless of what she said, so she told them the truth. Cerdone, as far as she knew, respected the rules of war unlike the Scythirians. She might hate these people who had killed him husband and her neighbors (their mangled remains had apparently been pulled away in her absence) but they would treat Joseph with a modicum of respect.

She opened the door of her bedroom for the two soldiers. There Joseph lay. He looked up and saw the two men. His face went red with anger. He reached for his sidearm (Mariam hadn’t thought to take it from him). “Joseph, no!” Mariam shouted, running to get the gun away from him. She knocked his hand away, and he did not attempt to grab his gun again. After a second, she realized why. The Cerdon, the one who spoke Russian, had filled him with lead.

Anger swelled in Mariam. Now these butchers had a face, a face that she could spit at, claw at, shoot at. The two men turned around, apparently not caring about what Mariam could do. She clenched her face, desperately in need of revenge. She reached for Joseph’s sidearm and BANG BANG BANG BANG the bastards were dead. She threw down the gun and began crying. It was over.

"Work is the curse of the drinking classes."

Maximus Varus gazed over the modern architecture of the latest city to fall into Çerdon-Porcu hands from his comfortable place inside his Panzerkampfwagen IV. The last few hours had been the hardest test for the Swiss-Roman Security Force so far in the campaign against Quaon.

Unlike their Çerdon counterparts, Porcuian military doctrine specifically called for "innocent civilian deaths to be kept at a minimum" and so far in the limited time the Swiss-Roman Security Force had been sent to Quaon civilian deaths were thought to be close to zero. The Swiss Roman Air Force had been operating longer in the war than the army but took the policy of only attacking known military instillations, while leaving the task of general bombing runs to Çerdoné.

With that in mind it was up to men like Varus to clear out the city of resistance and continue to pave their way to victory. After the heavy artillery bombardment, units of the 12th Armored Division of Porcu moved into the city and began their job of clearing every street corner, every apartment, and every room of enemy soldiers. Swiss-Roman infantry lead the way with tanks following and soon were able to claim their first victory as they managed to wipe a cafe clean of Quaon troops.

Varus gazed out of his tank's optic sights, trying to locate any dense areas of enemy troops. Receiving nearly continuous radio traffic Varus managed to keep his focus on the battle while listening for calls for assistance. Rumbling down a side street Varus soon noticed a Quaonion machine gun nest located on the third floor of a building. Varus decided to try and take the nest out himself before radioing both Çerdon and Porcuian infantry. Ordering the driver to stop and put the tank in reverse, Varus was able to raise the Panzerkampfwagen's 120mm cannon enough to where he could hit the nest with a direct shot. His actions didn't go unnoticed, however, and by the time Varus ordered the gunner to fire part of the building had been blasted apart without any sign of the Quaonion soldiers. This wouldn't last as the walls of the second floor began to crumble under the shock of the blast and the weight of the debris of the third floor. The Quaonion soldiers had tried to quickly exit the building but had only managed to make it one floor down. With four enemy soldiers within range of the tank's machine gun, which was wielded into the turret, Varus quickly grasped the trigger and squeezed. Poor bastards didn't have a chance.

The battle, although lasting several hours, seemed to conclude rather quickly in Varus's eyes and soon most of the fighting had died down, with sporadic gunfire becoming the new norm. Eventually Varus lead his Panzer down another street with housing complexes on both sides and feeling relatively secure he opened the commander's hatch and stood, the morning air still having a cool feel despite the smell of blood, gunpowder, and whatever was currently burning.

Gazing down the street he noticed he noticed a pair of Çerdon troops enter a house that had had its entrance blown apart by an artillery round, its crater laying only a few meters away and serving as a blatant reminder. Moments later he saw them exiting and when he heard the quick succession of gun shots he had to do a double take, not believing his eyes the first time. Varus was close enough now that he could clearly see that it was a woman who had killed the two soldiers.

Varus looked around but found no other Çerdon troops, the two must have separated themselves from their company, and quickly ordered the tank to a stop. Against the advice of his fellow crewmen Varus exited and hopped to the ground not to distant from the enraged woman. Keeping in mind that she had a loaded gun Varus kept himself in the open, not wishing to surprise her. With hands extended he was easily able to get the woman's attention. Swiss-Roman children learn four languages naturally, French, German, Italian, and the official language Latin, but as helpful as Russian could have been at that moment Varus knew none at all.

Making sure to keep his hands up Varus crept closer and tried to communicate to the woman. He quickly cycled through the languages he knew, including the little Swedish he remember as a kid, but to no avail. In return, the woman responded in Russian and so for the moment being Varus seemed to be stuck in a bad situation. Resorting to something he knew would be comprehensible beyond a doubt Varus slowly pulled his pistol out of the holster and dropped it at his side, kicking it towards the woman.

Varus was relieved to see that she in turn lowered the gun she held and allowed him to draw closer. Hoping that the Swiss-Roman reputation had preceded him Varus gazed inside the house and noticed the dead soldier laying on a bed. Feeling a sudden rush of sadness and respect Varus unconsciously began to pray the Hail Mary. After a few moments, he exited and called his fellow crewmen to help him bury the body in the grassy area behind the building.

The woman noticed this and without any orders to help followed the men back out to the tank, grabbed a shovel off the back storage area, and helped dig. The job was finished in less than fifteen minutes and after a short pause for prayer Varus left to retrieve the two Çerdon soldiers, who despite their actions deserved a traditional burial. The woman, whose spirits seemed to have improved dramatically during the last fifteen minutes, suddenly became angry and spouted off in a quick succession of Russian, none of which Varus or his men understood.

The next two took a little longer due to the fact that the woman did not lend her assistance but soon the last Çerdon had been buried, their dog tags collected, and their souls prayed for. Ordering his men to take the shovels back and to ready the tank, Varus turned to the woman and quickly said goodbye, reaching for her hands and placing his commander's cap in her hands. Although she wouldn't understand he told her that he could easily acquire another and that she should head West, eventually to make contact with Swiss-Roman and Çerdon units.

With that he bid her farewell, climbing back into the turret, and waving momentarily from the commander's hatch before turning around and heading off down the street...

Catholic Europe, then the Amish. Nag Ehgoeg’s route into Europe.

And, in this case, Germany.

Nag Ehgoeg had been… slow in providing aid to Germany. Nag Ehgoeg had no interest in either the ToK or the Madrid Pact winning this war – in fact the longer it was drawn out and the more destruction wrecked on Europe, the better as far as Nag Ehgoeg was concerned. If a front opened that would cause harm to Hispania, Nag Ehgoeg had no qualms with withdrawing their aid to Germany and switching sides.

Not that Nag Ehgoeg’s aid would be worth much, not in the grand scheme of events. The Dominion had other concerns than a war in Europe.

Nagian troops had plenty of experience fighting against Hispania and Menhad – and experience fighting side by side with Menhadiens and the Germans – and this experience gave them insight. The Germans had master tacticians and experienced generals but so the saying went – every little helps. Aside from tactical advisors, the Nagian deployment in Germany was limited to a single chopper and twenty fighting men – elite SMART soldiers. No formal declarations of war were made and a modest effort was invested in secrecy – in the midst of the war, it was unlikely anyone would be watching Nag Ehgoeg for involvement in Germany and the government had plausible deniability. Still… it would be unseemly for Nag Ehgoeg to be seen helping the ToK after the Swiss had buddied up to them and with Hispania’s Caspian insult a fresh scar on the Nagian government.

OOC: I'm having fun reading this but I don't wanna jump in. I did promise the Kaiser aid though... so here it is. This is likely to be my last post in this thread though.

TOP SECRET MESSAGE
To: Cerdoné High Command
From: Mircanian High Joint Command

Our defence line on the Polish-German border has been enstablished successfully ando now 350,000 Mircanian soldiers are deployed there together with Polish forces. Intelligence reports that the risk of a German offensive is decreasing.
We are sending you a small contingent of 50,500 men formed by 4 Marine Infantry brigades, 1 motorized infantry division and 1 mechanized infantry division (including also 1 armoured cavalry battalion equipped with 20 Centauro tank destroyers). This units will be brought to the harbour of Lubeck by a cargo fleet which will be escorted by our navy. Once in your territory our troops will be under your command.
Later our fleet is going to start patrolling the Baltic sea and carrying out sea blockade of the port of Stettin together with the Marslavan navy. We also request the support of a battle group of the Cerdon navy in case of aggression by further Menhadien ships in the area.
Meanwhile our fleet carrying the contingent has already left the port of Danzig en route to Lubeck.

1st Mircanian Fleet
The Baltic Sea

Captain Vincent Rodrigo was the commanding officer of the Mircanian cruiser HSMS Adriatic which was in the vanguard of the Mircanian fleet.
This cruiser was one of the most powerful ships in the Mircanian Navy. Armed with an 127 mm gun turret and three 76 mm rapid guns that could be used successfully either against naval or air targets, its firepower was huge even without counting 12 ship-to-ship missile launchers and 1 SAM launcher positiond at midship and finally 1 octuple ESSM (Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile) launcher mounted on the bow.
3 Phalanx CIWS systems could shot down incoming enemy missiles and act together with the 76 mm guns that could fire radar-guided rounds able to intecept enemy missiles or aircrafts.
Advanced SONAR systems, anti-submarine missiles and torpedoes and 2 ASW elicopters could protect the ship and the fleet from enemy subs, locate and sink the target.
The Adriatic was the first of 5 powerful ships of this class in service with the Mircanian navy and captain Rodrigo was ready to bring the ship into battle. He prepared himself and trained and waited this moment for 25 years of service in the navy and was looking forward to detect enemy ships on the radar and launch anti-ship missiles on the targets. However at the moment the main task of the fleet was to escort the cargoes to Lubeck and then move towards Stettin and start blockade operations and as expert officer captain Rodrigo also knew that fighting the enemy in a naval battle without the support of Marslavan and Cerdon navies was a suicide mission that even the whole Mircania fleet couldn't afford to carry out.

The vanguard was made up of 2 cruiser (USMS Adriatic and USMS Bering), 3 AEGIS destroyers, 3 frigades, 4 corvettes, 7 missile boats and 3 U-212A class submarines.
The main fleet was formed by 1 amphibious assault carrier (USMS Ulysses), 2 cruisers, 4 AEGIS destroyers, 2 Kidd class destroyers, 5 frigades, 5 corvettes, 10 missile boats and 2 U-212A class submarines together with 3 assault landing ships, 4 tanker ships and more than 20 cargo ships.
Air corver was provided by Ulysse air group's AV-8B Harrier II jets and Mircanian Air Force Su-33MK Flankers and the submarines escorting the flet were trying to detect enemy subs either with pasive sonar or with active sonar pings which unavoidly would detect further enemy subs

The Marslavan fleet hurges the Mircanian fleet to join it in its blockade of the harbour of Stettin .
We have indeed managed to blockade the entrance to the harbour without encountering too much resistance : they are too busy fighting the Cerdonian fleet, but we need to solidify our positions .

The fleet finished landing Mircanian troops in Lubeck and while the coargos, now empty, were going back home with a small escort the main fleet joined the Marslavan navy ouside the harbour of Stettin.
Mircanian and Marslavan submarines kept searching for enemy submarines all around the area and every search looked negative, until now.
Air cover was always huge with Harriers and Flankers of Mircanian forces and MiG-30 fighters of the Marslavan carrier Boguslav IV and the AEGIS systems of Mircanian destroyers always alerted.

Mircanian ships also started coastal bombing on military targets with 127 mm and 76 mm guns positioned aboard every ship of the fleet. Obviously this was just to weaken enemy supply lines and large-size targets because without anyone scounting on the ground the fire of the guns couldn't be precise enought against armoured and infantry units.

Quaon was on the verge of collapse. With the capture of Minsk complete, Cerdoné now only had Kiev to worry about, and the Communist "Republic" would be thrown out of the war, democratized, and in fact turned into an ally. But the march to Kiev was a long one, and would prove to be a difficult throw. With only 300,000 men mobile for the invasion, the forces send by Cerdoné were undermanned for such an operation. A bulk of the communist forces had been built up there, ready to defend their capital city from capitalist invaders.

So far, momentum had worked perfectly. Cerdoné was destroying its enemies in the war against the ToK. This momentum, however, was dying out, and the effects of this were becoming more and more clear. Cerdon armored divisions were slowed dramatically by disruptions in their supply lines, and they made quick targets for Quaonian hit-and-run forces. In addition, the Cerdon airforce was spread far to thin for it to accomplish much of any task.

Forces in Quaon were subject to horrid treatment by the local citizenry, and the strategy adopted in Germany of "making the enemy pay for the war" was failing miserably. Quaonians simply would not give up their goods to invading soldiers. Because of low levels of supply, a rebellion even broke out from low-level soldiers fighting in Quaon. They were put down quickly, of course, and the sources of the rebellion were court marshaled, but the act was symbolic of the reversel the Cerdon war effort was making.

Back home, things weren't much better. Cerdoville, a city with a population of nearly two billion, was growing restless. Citizen protests had become a daily occurance, and were now accompanied by militant rioting. Niépcé and his communist party came out of hiding, with the realization that the government had its hands full. It openly preached about the wrongs of the war, and promoted support for the Quaonian government's expulsion of invaders. The communists criticized allied governments, pointed out atrocities committed by Cerdoné's own government, and, worst of all, did open battle with the police in the streets.

The economy was collapsing as a result of Cerdoné stepping into a conflict to big for even its britches. Cerdoné was fighting a war against an entire alliance, and most of its own allies were so small that they required Cerdon subsidies to fight on.

What had been working so perfectly now threatened to fall apart.

What was happening on the German front was not far from what was happening on the Quaonian front. In fact, it had been even worse. While the populace was less difficult in providing resources for Cerdon troops than in Quaon, the military of Germany was aided by the militaries of other ToK states as well. This mad Cerdoné force itself to stand against a multitude of enemies.

While it was true that Germany was distracted on fronts on three of its flanks, this was not a high comfort. Stalemates had been established on the other fronts, and this left Germany free to hack away at Cerdoné in the north. The result was bad.

After brilliantly capturing Lubeck, Cerdon troops attempted to advance towards Hamburg. This attempt failed miserably. Cerdon troops made their way to Hamburg, and were bombarded heavily by both artillery and Luftwaffe support. By the time troops made it to Hamburg, they were to weakened to do anything of significance, and were quickly defeated, with prisoners numbering near 100,000. The disaster of Hamburg proved to be another reason for Cerdoville to protest.

Germany's supply situation made it look like the Quaonian front was a land of plenty. German submarines had destroyed Cerdon shipping to Lubeck. Depots were not as vast in their supplies as had been previously hoped- what this meant was that the troops in Germany were to fight armies superior in number to their own without proper supply.

The war was turning itself around, and Cerdoné's prospects for victory finally looked as though they may be challenged.

As bad as things were in Cerdone, such could not be said of Austro-Bayern.

Munich went to sleep peacefully--albeit cautiously--every night, and arose each morning as of yet untouched. The same could be said of the rest of the Confederation.

The atmosphere was tense, but nonetheless unified; through the obvious political upheavals of recent days, and through the fighting, the citizens of the Confederation held together. Some would say it was just general patriotism. Others would say it was naivety.

But one thing was certain: there was solidarity at least because the Guard was on the front lines.

And if the Guard fell, so too would Austro-Bayern.

*

"We're running out of time!"
"We're ahead of schedule!"
"I don't like this. I don't like this at all."
"We need to redouble our efforts!"
"We're overstretched as it is!"

From one perspective, the Central European campaign--the "Austro-Hungarian War", as it were--was the brightest spot in the entire war for the Madrid Pact. The Confederation Guard had achieved total surprise and was even now marching on Budapest. "Europe's Finest" had--thus far--tossed aside Hungarian resistance forces like toys.

But as well as it was proceeding, there remained the nagging feeling that the Confederation just wasn't doing enough to help its allies.

Of course, there was the question of what several thousands could do against several millions...

...but, then again, wasn't Hungary proving what, indeed, could be done?

Moreover, the Confederation had to keep its involvement contained. Taking on Hungary was already a daunting enough challenge--but Germany, or Quaon, or Hispania, or, worse yet, all at once?

There were thoughts floating around... thoughts that eliminating the TOK's weakest member by way of the Madrid Pact's weakest member--not that the Guard, of course, considered itself weak--was little more than a sideshow, a stunt, a pointless charade.

Italy and Austria-Hungary in the First World War... so long ago... and how ironic that...

And one that might cause the larger war effort to fail.

Or would it?

Nixon's Presidential Victory Speech Excerpt

Posted Image
President Richard Nixon, forefront, with Vice-President Decius Scipio

"Honorable ladies and gentlemen of the Senate, foreign dignitaries, members of the press, and most importantly my fellow Porcuians. It is with great happiness that I stand before you today, re-elected and re-energized, and I look to sharing many more pleasant moments with you as I have done in the past...

...Porcu stands at a juncture, one which may be the toughest it has faced in recent memory, and there are only two directions this Republic can take. One is towards victory in this war which we fight alongside our allies as true companions and believers in the ideals of democracy and liberal progressivism. The other direction is towards defeat, allowing the members of the authoritative Treaty of Konigsberg to expand their influence across the continent ruining the hope that every member of society has at an equal opportunity to succeed and become whatever they put their mind to. I believe that this war is so much more than one alliance against another; this war is one way living against another. Individual freedom versus none at all. The right of exercising your opinion free of reprisal versus facing imprisonment and death for merely opening your mouth against the state. Porcu stands and fights for the freedom and liberty that every individual has been given to them by the grace of God.

I have read over various news sources that have painted the Swiss-Roman Security Force as a tyrannical, uncivilized mess of men and machine. Thank goodness, none were Swiss-Roman news outlets. I have stated before that the way Porcu will approach war will be radical, in the sense that at no point in time will the mass targeting of civilians be acceptable as a means to an end. The Swiss-Roman Air Force has recorded only 2 civilian deaths, both of those individuals were contract workers for the Quaon government and were present at a munitions factory when it was bombed. I cannot express enough my gratefulness and praise for the Security Force's steadfast discipline in adhering to this policy, for I know that even our allies's armed forces have not ever adhered to such a policy. Which brings me to praising the bravery of our allies's men in uniform. I would like to thank all the men serving under the banners of Çerdoné, Austro-Bayern, Mircania, and Marslava; your effort has been noted and you have the full support of Porcu behind you...

...Having noted that public opinion in Çerdoné is rapidly falling Porcu will increase its already large pledged aid amount to nations such as Mircania, Marslava, and Austro-Bayern. The ToK obviously knows of Çerdoné military strength but they should not underestimate Porcuian economic strength, for as long as there is money to buy guns and equipment the effort will continue..."

Porcu High Command

"Çerdoné is falling apart, her troops are becoming disillusioned, and it seems that at any moment the front could collapse..." noted Field Marshal Louis d'Marcque. "Could our men possibly stabilize the front should Çerdoné be forced out of the war?"

"It is difficult to tell, sir" responded General Gaius Lappius. "Quaon has quickly degenerated into a guerrilla-warfare quagmire and without plenty of men at our disposal we cannot possibly replace Çerdon efforts..."

"How is Operation Mountain Ice coming along?" d'Marcque asked looking to change the topic if only for a brief moment.

"Well, sir" responded another general, this time Luco Matto. "All escorts are ready and Air Marshal Maxentius has given the orders to the Air Force to commence bombardement...Hopefully, we can shift the pressure on Çerdoné away from Quaon and knock Germany a blow..."

"Hopefully..."

COMRADE PRESIDENT LUKA FALAN'S RADIO ADDRESS:

"Comrades, it is with a heavy heart that I address you today. The city of Minsk has been taken by the forces of the capitalists. Our armies have been forced to retreat. Figures on casualties have not yet been tallied, but I offer my condolences to those who have lost loved ones in this terrible war. Those young men and women are the heroes of the Communist Republic, and their spirit will not be forgotten. As long as Quaonions live, we shall honor their sacrifice, and will shall never let our motherland fall.

"For that, is what we fight for. We do not fight overseas; we do not fight for plunder, or territory. We fight for our very existence, the very continued existence of the Communist Republic. They have bombed us, they have shot us dead like dogs, they have butchered us. They have killed men, women, and children. They have killed Germans, they have killed Hispanics, they have killed too many to count.

"I will not lie to you, comrades. Our situation is dire. Not only do they declare their illegal Republics, which are a scourge on all civilization, they march to Kiev, with the intent to bash us into submission. They call themselves liberators, but I ask you, what sort of liberators bomb civilians? What sort of liberators attack a free people?

"They are not the liberators, comrades. The Cerdons, the Porcuians, the enemy. They are capitalist pigs who will stop at nothing to see their perverse political ideology take power throughout Europe. If they defeat us, who will they turn to next? Yshurak? Russia? The Swiss? The Cerdon government is a stain upon the world. They are not liberating us, comrades. We will liberate them.

"As I speak, the Communist Party of Cerdone is attempting to stop the corrupt government of that nation. It is attempting to rid itself of the capitalist oppressors who attack us today. They shall be succesful, and Cerdone will be liberated.

"We shall hold at Kiev. We will not take one step backward. We shall hold at Kiev and allow them to take not an inch of that city. We shall fight them, we shall kill them, we shall defeat them. We will then push forward and liberate the parts of Quaon that they occupy, and then liberate their own nation.

"Comrades, Quaon shall never fall. The Quaonion people will fight against any odds and we shall be victorious. This is Comrade Falan, signing off."

The Çerdon government had found itself in a very difficult situation. The sum of its total interests had outgrown the country's ability to defend them. Çerdoné's front was falling apart. Once the first cracks of deterioration showed, the crack grew and grew until the entire front threatened to fall apart. What had been initially calculated as a swift victory was disrupted by German submarine operations and uncooperative locals. High Command officers were fired rapidly, which led to new generals replacing them- in turn, this threw newly promoted officers into the shoes of field marshals and theater planners. The result was an increasingly incompetent staff.

Quaon's leaders had noticed this weakness, and threatened to "liberate" Çerdoné from capitalism. This fueled Niépcé's operations. His operations got closer and closer to Çerdon government offices, until eventually there was fighting on the steps of the Capital Building itself.

------------------------

Albert Liniet was a low ranking officer in the Communist Party militia. He'd joined out of hate for the war. His family had been devastated by the conflict, and was not able to function normally. As soon as Niépcé's militia began its attacks, he joined out of contempt for the Çerdon government.

Now, he was going to commit the ultimate operation- the assassination of the Prime Minister himself. Toussaint Chevalier was currently heading a session of parliament. As soon as that session ended, he was going on a plane to Porcu to meet with President Nixon. At precisely 3:00, the meeting was adjourned. As expected, the Prime Minister left the parliament house.

And, as according to Liniet's mission, he shot the prime minister three times in the head. Chevalier's body hit the ground immediately, and he was dead. Police tried to reach the scene in a hurry, but were blocked by Communists who had decided the time to seize power was now. Liniet sunk into the crowds, and was let to go free.

--------------------------

Reactions to Chevalier's assassination were mixed. Some cheered it, expecting an end to the war as a result. Others jeered it, claiming that the instability already found in Çerdoné would lead to a seizure of power by a radical party, or a complete occupation by a foreign power. Either way, one thing was certain. Change would be happening within the next few days. Critical, critical change. The death of the Prime Minister merited a snap election. It was unclear what the results of such an election would be, with the country in such turmoil.

The only thing that was certain was there'd be changes.

--------------------------

Çerdon soldiers were now at Kiev. News of the prime minister's assassination had hit them hard. People back home did not support the troops, and the morale of the armies had burned out. The country's war effort was now broken. Most of the men no longer wanted to fight. They wanted to get back home to ensure the safety of their families.

But, that would be desertion. Officers cracked down hard on their troops, and forced them to march on, punishable by a swift death. These officers realized their dire situation, and needed to capture Kiev as soon as possible. It wasn't likely at this point.

The tired army had lost 120,000 men on their march to Kiev. The causes were sickness, guerrilla attacks, marshaling, and suicide. The force of 180,000 men reached Kiev, unwilling to fight any longer, and launched their attack at exactly 0800 hours. The war rested on this critical battle. If it was lost, the army would undoubtedly be captured or dissolve by its own accord. If it won, the war would be swiftly negotiated to an end, and the status quo would likely be reestablished.

Either way, Çerdoné's war would end by the end of the month. Or so it was hoped.
