A Prince Amoung Men-Shoot First and Ask Questions Later
Gol’bon, The Commonwealth of Zolony

The Commonwealth Tower had been inhabited by numerous men in the past. It had been the home of the Provincial Governors of the province of Zeril in the days when the Hu’fievren had ruled from Hu’fiev. The I’Hu’fievren, an odd cult like figure, had ruled from the tower after the First Zolon Civil War. Now Bruce McDaniels, the Lord Governor and Head of the Commonwealth, directed the nation from this building.

On the third floor of the Tower, Bruce McDaniels had assembled his top government officials. As Zolony was essentially a military dictatorship, almost all of these men were generals or the like, aside from a few colonial officials from Chirondom. They sat assembled in a conference room. The doors were locked and the walls were soundproof. Two guards stood at the doors. Espionage would not be tolerated in relation to something as important to Zolon national security as this.

The Lord Governor sat at the head of the table. To his left sat Bend Vena, his second in command. Bend had been one of the first native Zolons to come to his side, and had fought with him since the beginning. Bend, once a bartender in a third world nation, was now the highest-ranking general in a thriving nation.

To his right was a representative of the government in Shanghai. He was one of the few in the room without a military rank. His name…what was his name? Bruce McDaniels groped for it, and at last found it. Isaac Wright. He seemd a nice enough fellow, though he was a bit too quiet for Bruce’s liking.

What Bruce did or did not like wasn’t relevant at the moment. What was relevant were the events unfolding in the Middle East, or more specifically, Persia. The Scythirian Empress was having a child, a child whom the Scythirian Emperor planned to proclaim Hu’fievren of Zolony. Once Scythirus was finished destroying the Europeans in Georgia, the Scythirian Emperor planned to invade Zolony and install the new child.

Bruce had already made a public statement condemning the Scythirian Emperor, and Prime Minister Wilhelm von Koenig had declared that the New British Empire would not vacate the Commonwealth. That declaration was all well and good, but it didn’t do a thing to stop the Scythirian army.

“My friends, we’ve got problems,” Bruce said, addressing his generals and the representative from Chirondom. He was the only one among them aside from this Chiron representative to have a non-Zolon accent; his accent suggested Scottish heritage. “Let’s forget the possibility that the Scythirians invade and pray that the Europeans wear them down long enough that they aren’t spoiling for a fight.”

One of the lower ranking Generals interrupted him. “Sir, let’s not forget that possibility. The Scythirians and Paradisians currently have a force of twenty-five million men advancing on Georgia’s capital. They are going to win that war, and there are no buts about that. Now, sir, that force is bigger than the entire New British Army by fifteen million.”

Bruce was slightly annoyed. “Later,” he snarled, waving off the general. He went back to what he was saying. “We’ve just had to put down a rebellion. Let’s say that this news reaches the people about this little son of a whore’s birth and decide to rise up. Now, I don’t know about you lads, but I don’t trust that we won’t have to put down another rebellion.”

The assembled men nodded. Silence overtook them as they contemplated the painful future that might soon be upon them. At last, Bend spoke up. “Has the state news broken the story yet?”

Bruce contemplated the question for a moment. “I should’ve invited the Minister of Information to the meeting…” he mumbled, shrugging.

“If it hasn’t, let’s put a lid on the story,” Bend replied. “We might not be able to control the internet well enough that the story won’t reach the public, but we can at least slow the spread of it.”

Bruce nodded. Bend always was sensible. He had a sharp mind, a mind that made him perfect for government. Now, if only a sharp mind could kill twenty-five million soldiers. Now, as to that problem. “Well, now, let’s go back to the more dangerous problem we have facing ourselves. Let’s think about what happens if the Europeans lose their war in Georgia and the Scythirians decide to have their way with us.”

“Put a nuke up that raghead Emperor’s ass, just like the Veloryans did!” declared Isaac Wright in a surprisingly forceful tone. Bruce gave him a curious look, while the rest of his generals simply shook his head. Wright continued nonetheless. “Come on. The Mva’zaris nuked your old capital…Hu’fiev, was it? Why can’t use those nukes to destroy Jihammad?”

Bruce frowned. “You want to know why we can’t?” he demanded. “Because if we put a nuke up their ass, they put one up our ass. Do you understand this concept?”

Isaac Wright became quiet, mumbled something incoherent and nodded his head. Bruce went on. “Now, gentlemen, the National Defense Force can’t stand up against even a relatively small invasion force. They will be walked over if they don’t turn traitor, as they may well. Ten thousand men against the Persian hordes…that isn’t good odds. Hell, that isn’t even odds. That’s a massacre.

“Now, Mr. Wright, I understand that you can recommend directly to von Keonig that he deploy forces to Zolony. I’d like to ask you to recommend that we have two armies deployed here, as well as an airforce division and the Atlantic fleet. Can you do that?”

Wright nodded. “Um…yes, sir, I can do that.”

“I would also like you to recommend General Vena be made Supreme Commander of all forces in Zolony,” added Bruce.

“Er…yes sir,” replied Wright. “I’ll make the recommendations immediately…it will take at least a week before we can begin to deploy our forces, though.”

“We’ve got time,” Bruce said. “Just get them out there soon. We’ll be needing them.”
