The Triumph of Orthodoxy

Glorious and holy news greeting the King of Sicily. George Palaeologus had been sitting quietly at prayer when his servant announced to him that he recieved a message from Cyprus. God had been merciful. The news had been glorious. Another Roman people had thrown off the yoke of their opressors and restored righteousness. Immediately he contacted his nephew, his wife's brother's son, Constantine Monomachus, the King of Cyprus.

When the two monarchs conversed, they exchanged tidings of their movements of liberation. Glad tidings they were: few members of their family lived. But their mission was not yet over. Still the Orthodox people were scattered. Many still lived in bondage. Those who were free were disorganized. And Georgia bled.

Together the two monarchs drafted a petition to the Emperor of all the Russias:

"Might and Magnificent Sovereign, Sacred and Holy Emperor,

We as Romans and Orthodox Christians greet with news of our liberation. We have thrown off false governments and infidel tyrants in order to restore lawful rule to our lands. We greet you with the news that Sicily, Sardinia, Africa, and Cyprus are now free.

But we fear for Orthodoxy. Seeing the torments we have suffered, we fear. Seeing the troubles in Georgia we fear. We thus beg you, our beloved master, the reconciler of all men, the righter of wrongs, and One Sovereign annointed by Christ to rule the Earth, to do this. We beseech you to summon a great meeting of all the Orthodox leaders of the world, to gather in a city of your choosing, for the purpose of Orthodox unity.

Beloved in Christ,

George Palaeologus,
By the Grace of God, King of Sicily, Sardinia and Africa

Constantine Monomachus,
By the Grace of God, King of Cyprus

Paul, the Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias was sitting quietly in his study at the Winter Palace of St. Petersburg. His day in Moscow had been, like so many days before it, a stressful one. Georgia was bleeding, good Georgians, good Christians were dying and he himself harbored doubt. A grave and heavy load had been bestowed upon him since the collapse of Rome.

He could not let the Christian people down, that was why he took the thrown of the Orthodox world. Yet, he wondered now if he was truly ready, if he was really ready to take such responsibility, to carry the church on his own shoulders. While sitting there deep in his thoughts, a servant entered the room. The commotion broke the Tsar from his thoughts, he welcomes the servant in. The servant bowed and then handed the Tsar a letter.

He opened the letter and almost immediately began to be filled with delight. He got up and went over to a desk in the room. He could barely contain his excitement as he wrote a response.

Great Kings of Orthodox,

It warms my heart beyond words to know that your great struggles have seen victory. To know that your great Kingdoms, models of Orthodoxy have been liberated from the evils that would look to suppress you, brings hope to my heart that good can overcome all odds.

Your fears are just. I too look upon the Orthodox world and fear that I have fallen short of my duties to the Roman Empire that I have sworn to preserve. The war in Georgia has taken a great toll on my heart. However, to know that you great Kings have survived to tests of God and triumphed over the evil that would suppress, gives me a new sense of hope that the Orthodox church will succeed.

For this reason I give you my sworn world that I shall call upon the entire Orthodox World to come to St. Petersburg, to my own Palace, to discuss Orthodox unity.

Beloved in Christ, your sovereign,

Tsar Paul Georgovich Romanov II
By the Grace of God, Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias

Our Nation, even though secular and strictly separating State affairs from religions, has a big interest in developing relations with the Orthodox world.

The Republic of Great New France is also home to a vibrant Orthodox community of more than 1.9 million people from different origins.

We would take it as a great honour to have the possibility to attend those conferences via an observer.

The Ukabaneans cannot, and should not be allowed to join in this conference. They ally with the pagans of Scythirus and the God-haters of Nag Ehgoeg to wage war against Russian Georgia. For us to allow them a representative at this meeting would be the height of imbecility.

His Majesty,
King Constantine I Monomachus of Cyprus

Quaon will send an observer.

Alexanderhaven agrees with this sentiment. The Combine of Ukabanea must not be allowed to show their face at this celebration of triump.

The emperor expected as much, though if our request were to be approved our representatives would not come on behalf of the combine but rather would represent the orthodox church in ukabanea as the empire keeps a strict separation between church and state.

Ukabeana ought to end its war of conquest against Georgia if it expects to be accepted back into the bosom of the Orthodox Church, though we will wait for the ruling of the Emperor of the Romans before we pass further judgement.

As Great New France and Russia have never had ill will against one another in the long history of the two nations, I will allow an observer to be sent.

It is only after careful consideration and long deliberation that I have decided to deny the neo-Orthodox church of Ukabanea from sending a representative to this conference. Let this not reflect as a view of the Orthodox church that the Ukabanea people are not worthy of returning to communion with the Orthodox community but rather as a precaution for Russian security. The reality that the Combine is allied and makes war against Russia in Georgia cannot be overlooked and since neither of our two nations have ever had diplomatic relations, we cannot help but worry that the Emperor could use an invitation to such a conference as an opportunity to strike at my life or the lives of any important Orthodox leader that may attend, whether the neo-Orthodox representatives are willing participants in such a plot or not.

Know that it saddens my heart to turn way Orthodox Christians from this conference and that is was no simply decision made. It is my deepest hope as well as the Patriarch's that one day Ukabanea and Russia may restore peace between them and that the good and faithful Orthodox Christians of Ukabanea can once again join their brothers and sisters of faith.

OOC: Well we've given this thing a few days, so I guess we should kick it off. Unless you've been told you can't come, chances are you can. So even though we're moving on to making our entrances, don't feel you can't come just because you haven't asked. If there's a doubt in your mind as to whether or not you'd be allow to come or welcomed to come, then just PM me.

The Winter Palace, Saint Petersburg, Russia

Few expenses had been spared to decorate and prepare the home of the Tsar for this grand celebration of Orthodoxy. For over as week no everything within the palace was subject to the most thorough cleaning it had had in a long time. Banners of the Orthodox Church and of the Russian Empire, the new Empire of faith, were hung throughout the halls of the palace and along it's exterior. All as a symbol of glory and power to the church and the Empire. Something that was in need at this time when Russia worried daily over it's Georgian children.

The war had taken it's toil on just about every aspect of Russian society and life, especially the Russian check book. Still, in a belief that his nation needed this just as badly as he did to help life spirits and renew a sense of faith in the church and the Empire, the Tsar spared little expense for this celebration. This included security which was put on an all time high at the palace, in Saint Petersburg, and at the major airport for which the great Orthodox representatives would be arriving to.

Dressed in their Imperial dress uniform, the soldiers were not only an continuance of a symbol of Russian might but also a homage to the glorious past of Imperial Russia that dates back to some of the finest Tsar to ever rule the great Empire. They flanked the Palace square on both sides, as well as hallway within the palace. They also had a great presence at the airport, where beautifully restored white Rolls Royce's, the same car the Tsar himself had used on his trip to Chirondom, were parked one in front of the other, waiting for guests to arrive.

The Tsar himself was dressed in his own Imperial Military dress uniform. The breast of his coat adorned with all the metals and rank insignias afford to the Marshal of the Imperial Forces of Russia. The Tsar himself was not looking his best. He was a man that had already gone through a lot in his lifetime. He had already been through one assassination attempt an survived. He had taken on the role of the Roman Empire, an Empire that at it's high was one of the most powerful in the world, as well as protector and Tsar of the Orthodox faith. Most recently his trouble deepened as he now constantly worried over the efforts of the Georgian campaign. This added to the regular stress of running the his country only went to age him far beyond his nature years.

Still with all the age that now was packed on to a man only in his late 40s, there was still a stern and majestic figure. A man that commanded respect and had a warmth about him that invited many to be his friend. He waited patiently in the entrance way of the palace where he would great all his guests. They would then be escorted to the ballroom where tables were set for the conference. Along with himself, there would be Tikhon II, Patriarch of Moscow and All the Russias, Photius, Metropolitan of the Caribbean Exarchate, and a host of other important Bishops of the Orthodox Church.

With the weather being some of the finest Saint Petersburg had seen in sometime, the stage was now set for one of the greatest celebrations and most important conferences of the Tsar's life.

King George of Sicily, Sardinia, and Africa arrived at the conference with his wife, his son and heir, and his brother-in-law, Prince Leo the Blind. Several major nobles and retainers attended with them as well. Finally they were accompanied by a church delegation headed by the Metropolitan Archbishops of Sicily, Sardinia, and Africa.

The delegation from Cyprus was led by the young King Constantine I and Archbishop Epiphonias IV. Accompanying those men were six guards, two priests and a few of the most prominent noblemen in Cyprus. Along with this Greek delegation came a strangely out of place Arab. The man seemed to be trusted by both the King and Archbishop, though a few Russian guardsmen gave him suspicious looks.

When Constantine caught sight of the Sicilian party, he smiled at them and drew his delegation nearer. While he had no met any of these people before (save Leo, though Constantine of course did not remember that), they were his family, and he would do his best to form some sort of bonds with them.

Yermak Timofeievich, representing the steppe delegation, rode into the city with his retinue of 10,000 horsemen. The Host's embassy must have stretched for miles without end. Each one was dressed in his finest costume. The delegation reflected the cossacks' ethnically diverse membership. Cossackdom drew people of every skin color and shade from every corner of the Earth, who were more than likely misfits in their native societies, but found, on the endless steppe, one war, and one purpose, under the steel banners of cossackdom.

Yermak himself was wearing a 4-foot tall fur hat composed of the skins of several hundred small tundra animals, including voles, minks, and rabbits. At his side was Hieromonk Leontiy, the spiritual counselor of the cossacks. Leontiy was holding up a gold-encrusted Bible with his hands, and endlessly chanting an Orthodox prayer in a monotonal voice. He was almost shouting, over the din of the thousands of cossacks riding behind him, their bayonets and guns rattling.

Each 5 cossacks held aloft a giant flag, representing various things to be represented, including cossack regiments, the Holy Trinity, the Holy Wisdom, &c. The movement of the cossack banners, not one of which was not threaded with gold and silver threads or even studded with precious gemstones, glimmered in the sun like a flowing river. The sight was impressive indeed.

The arrival of King Hannibal II was without fanfare, and quiet. He had never been one for pomp and circumstance, and as the Orthodox leader of a 60% Catholic nation, he didn't feel he was worthy of such shows anyway. He had come out of duty to the former Roman Empire, his home, and as an Orthodox monarch, with the interest of speaking with his allies.

He was frequently sent out on missions like these, where he held as much power as Romano had decided to give him. He had no authority to sign any treaty, or make any promises. Romano had recently begun to keep him on a tight leash. It suited him. However, his advisor, Jorge Medrano, had full power to sign a treaty, which Romano must confirm.
