Imperium of Constantia

On the planet of Constantia, there is one legitimate authority, the Imperium of Constantia. Aside from that, there are only rebels against that authority. Within the Imperium, it is a subject of legitimate debate whether legitimate governments can exist on other planets. The majority of learned scholars would argue for the negative position.

Within the Imperium of Constantia, there is one legitimate authority, the Domnitor. Aside from that, there are only criminals who violate his commands. For more than four thousand years, the Domnitors have reigned over varying stretches of land on Constantia. They have gained and lost land during that time, but the Domnitors themselves are an unbroken continuity from even before that time. As far as men know, the Domnitors will last eternally as long as men breathe.

Rain poured down across the Imperium, reminding all of the might of God. Within the Imperium of Constantia, it rained heavily and often, as long as the weather was warm enough for precipitation to take the form of rain. It was said among the people of Constantia that the weather reflected the mood of the Domnitor. It seemed that the Domnitor was rarely happy. And why should he be happy, when so many souls were still lost to rebellion?

"Every man must be subject to the Domnitor for his salvation." They all knew that tennet, and it was said that even those oustide the Imperium knew it. Even in an age when mortal lifespans had grown tenfold, men still died. And thus, they still yearned for life after death. Historical records, kept by the learned scholars within the Citadel--the Center of all the World, charted history back nearly nine and a half thousand years. Perhaps half of that span had been enlightened by the Imperium of the Domnitors. Prior to that period lay a forgotten waste. Where did man come from? What came before? Nobody knew.

The Domnitor knew. Or so it was said. According to the learned scholars' lists, the first Domnitor was annointed seven thousand and seventy years ago. Ristu had spoken to him, it was said, had assured him that God had not forgotten man, had instituted the Reign of the Domnitors, and the Holy Rites. It is said that within the Domnitor's heart are kept secrets of what came before, which are passed on solemnly from father to chosen son, never to reach another's ears. The Domnitor seemed to know all, and they had saved man from the reign of violence. All dates were counted in the Years of the Domnitor.

More than two thousand black years lay between the earliest recorded history and the annointing of the First. More than two thousand years the Domnitors struggled with mortal princes and false prophets before establishing Heaven on Constantia. These were known as the Night Age and the Dawn Age. What followed was the Great Day, in which man now lived. What preceded was unknown, but it was generally understood that there had been a fall from a great height, that man had once known something but had now forgotten. What it was, only the Domnitor now knew.

The Night Age had been a period of horrors, the learned scholars said. Ancient secrets lay forgotten, and man was ruled by his basest instincts. The Dawn Age was said to have been a greater age, for the presence of the Domnitor. Man progressed in wisdom and stature, and the Domnitors struggled with the Princes of the World for Dominion. The Great Day was Paradise, for the Domnitors now ruled in glory. The Twilight would occur when the Domnitors had established rule over all life. Then, Ristu would innaugurate the Eternal Day.

Within the Citadel lay the Antonia Fortress. Antonia was said to be the beloved of the First. The Antonia Fortress was the seat of the Domnitors, the axis upon which the whole universe turned. The Citadel itself was vast but well planned, the glorious and perfect City, the pinnacle of mankind's learning and civilization. Then there were lesser cities along the shores, vast tracts of less populated land, and sacred grounds dedicated to Ristu. But the whole Imperium moved as one organism, guided by the Domnitor for the will of God Ristu.

"The Armies of Constantia are a fearful scourge," it was said. Mighty beyond compare, the Black Legion guarded the borders and prepared for war endlessly. It was said that one day it would bring the Reign of the Domnitors to every part of Constantia. At the same time it was said, that the Black Legion must be grim missionaries, and to take the Good Word to the rest of the worlds.

The learned scholars of the Citadel knew that man lived on other worlds, and even lived without the Domnitor. Few others knew of this. The orthodox opinion was that this was an imperfect state that would be fixed before the Eternal Day. The heterodox opinion was that men on other worlds did not require the Domnitor. Debate was allowed, among the scholars themselves, but such questions were not for the masses.

Other lands and other worlds lay outside the Imperium of Constantia. But this did not dismay the Domnitor. His forefathers had suffered worse things. The Great Day, he knew, would soon be over. Twilight was coming, and the Eternal Day would soon be revealed.
