Leader: Count Rudolph "the Bastard"
Seat: Brasov

Origins

Originally the fourth son of the duke of Hanover, Rudolph served as a pain in the side of his father, who was plagued by mockery within royal circles of his alleged origins (the result of a tryst between the duke and a prostitute of the city by the name of Ingrid). Having no legitimate claim to his father's lands due to low birth rank, Rudolph instead joined the Holy Roman Emperor's forces as a knight.

However, his low birth rank and questionable origin led to the Emperor's ultimate refusal of his services, instead encouraging the young man to join in the migration of a group known as the Transylvanian Saxons to an eastern region of the Hungarian Empire, having been invited by local lords of Hungary in hopes of obtaining a workforce immediately capable of establishing towns and developing both mines and agricultural regions within Transylvania.

Rudolph did just this, migrating to this region of Eastern Europe and rising to become the leader of a small, primarily Germanic town nestled in the Carpathian Mountains known as Brasov. Shortly after this improbable rise to prominence, Rudolph was knighted by the Miles Militis de Deus after allowing them safe haven within the walls of his blossoming city during the religious order's notorious battles with the anti-Christian elements. The Miles Militis de Deus also established a garrison within the town and constructed Citadel Brasov, a castle which commands control of the surrounding valley and countryside, and bestowed upon Rudolph the title of Count, which was confirmed by the Hungarian King Stephen I in the first year of his rule.

Population: 43,000

Established by Germanic peasants prior to the arrival of Rudolph's mission, the county of Brasov was born of the town itself, a small village in which regional farmers held biweekly markets in order to sell their goods. These business practices resulted in its gradual flourishing, with further Germanic involvement and the arrival of Miles Militis de Deus resulting in the gradual encompassing of the surrounding region. The majority of its inhabitants work the land, having accepted tenant positions offered by Count Rudolph. The surrounding river systems have allowed for limited trade, yet fear of the surrounding countryside and the dangerous groups within them have limited any economic flourishing which may have taken place, with the majority of the county's citizens residing within the walls of Citadel Brasov, which shelters a city of 20,000 inhabitants, including the Count himself.

Nestled within the peaks of the Carpathian mountain range, Citadel Brasov was originally constructed by the Miles Militis de Deus as one of a string of large scale, permanent fortifications meant to ensure that the barbarians to the east would not advance beyond Transylvania. However, its location in the middle of a number of river valleys led to the development of large scale farming efforts directly next to its walls, with surrounding towns quickly being rendered subservient to the occupants of the castle as a result of its sheer size and garrison capabilities. Originally a set of sparse fortifications, the castle was gradually expanded as Rudolph coordinated with the Miles Militis de Deus, eventually encompassing the surrounding hillside and various hamlets located upon it. Today the Citadel is home to a population of 20,000, with the Miles Militis de Deus maintaining a permanent garrison under the control of the Count of Brasov, whom the Miles Militis de Deus selected during its construction.

Total Forces: 1,850 men

350 Miles Militis de Deus

Technically the Knights Hospitaller were chartered in the 11th century (1099), can I have them? :P :P

OOC: Well, the game begins in 1001. (Consult this thread for more info: http://z3.invisionfree.com/nationstates/in...showtopic=5569)

WHen the time comes however, you could associate with the Crusader orders.

Another idea is that you could create a fictional military order, dedicated to fighting the ongoing wars against the Pechenegs and Cumans. Your military order could even be the prototype for the future foundation of the 3 Crusader orders in Jerusalem.

OOC:
I was going to post on that, but TC has beaten me to it. The idea of designing an early military order to war against the pagan is an excellent one.

Also, lebowski, you will have to edit certain references to Kings of Hungary in your backstory, as we are in the reign of St Stephen, the first King of Hungary.

OK, I've settled on creating a new military order with a primarily religious mission statement, to be called the Miles Militis de Deus ("Knights of God" in latin I believe). I'll post a description/history within the day. Thanks for the idea guys B) .

The Miles Militis de Deus are members of a religious order, "Sarcalogos Vernula", established by Bishop Burchard of Worms in the Holy Roman Empire. Originally charged with the duty of guarding the Cathedral of St. Peter during its construction, the order soon became deeply involved in Burchard's battles with the notorious Duke Otto of Carinthia, a traitorous member of the royal family who was repeatedly charged with protecting heretics and other enemies of the church.

Eventually, in the year 987, Burchard requested that the Miles Militis de Deus engage in forceful negotiations in an attempt to dispose of Duke Otto, and the order moved east into the region of Transylvania in an attempt to establish defensive fortifications surrounding the duchy of Carinthia.

However, soon after invading the region of Carinthia the mission statement of the Order of Miles Militis de Deus changed. With the baptism of St. Vladamir the Great in 988, Prince of Kiev, the knights were now charged with maintaining a connection between this eastern kingdom and the westernmost regions of Catholicism, making their stay in Transylvania a permanent residence. Soon multiple monastery's developed in order to spread the Catholic faith, and the Miles Militis de Deus invested a great deal in the creation of Citadel Brasov, a mountain castle and town which would operate as the hub for all operations within the Transylvania area.

Led by Sir Albert, Duke of Pomerania, the Miles Militis de Deus today guard against foreign incursion and defend the Holy Roman Emperor's land claims, with their Transylvanian Chapter officially headed by the Count of Brasov, yet for all practical purposes taking orders only from the Leader of the Transylvania Order of the Miles Militis de Deus, the Emperor of the the Holy Roman Empire, and the Pope himself.
