The County of Sânpetru Posted Image "Iron is our voice." ***** The House of Sânpetru Head: Radu the Grim, Count of the Sânpetru Hill and Voivode of the Mountain Clans Seat: Sânpetru Hill Radu's ancestors were shepherd chieftens in the Southern Carpathians before they led the mountain clans north into the valleys of Southern Transylvania. From the time of Radu's great-grandfather, Peter the Merciful, the family took Saint Peter as their patron. Radu's grandfather, Stephen the Roman, settled his people among the rural Vlach communities south of the Mures river. During the lifetime of Stephen and his son John the Pious, several rural communities and villages banded together to form a small confederation. John built a fortified town on the Sânpetru Hill which became the family's ruling seat. With the breakdown of the First Bulgarian Empire and the wanderings of various nomadic tribes, Radu's realm has largely stuck together out of purposes of defense. But where his father and grandfather were leaders of makeshift arrangements driven by need, Radu has inherited a tradition of lordship and has developed a sense of entitlement, calling himself "Voivode." With the coming of the Magyars and others into the region, Radu will likely have to defend his position. For that purpose, he had begun the construction of a stone castle in the nearby mountains. Quiet and rarely smiling, the Voivode Radu is called "Grim" because he never laughs and always seems to have a solemn look on his face. He tends to observe his surroundings and other actions, and to listen carefully to all his advisors, before making decisions, rather than speaking a lot. He is young, in his early twenties, but never impetuous. Of average hieght, he has a hardened warrior's form, dark hair and eyes, and a dark complexion. He has recently married Zoe, a Greek noblewoman from Constantinople. The lords of Sânpetru have traditionally used the sigil of an eagle, symbolizing their claimed Roman ancestry. The bird also symbolizes their right of rule. Sânpetru County Population: 86090 people, including knights and men-at-arms, peasant farmers, townsfolk, and mountain shepherds Lands: Sânpetru Hill dominates the valley between several ranges of the Carpathian mountains. To the east, south, and west, Sânpetru lands extend into the mountains but the borders are ill-defined. To the north, Sânpetru lands cross the Mures river and continue into the mountains. The whole county consists of several mountainous regions with a river and valley in the central portion. Posted Image Despite the presence of some old Roman roads that ease travel and communication, Sânpetru County is still largely undeveloped. Most of the population reside in small rural villages and survive as farmers. Additionally, there are still shepherd communities in the mountains. The Sânpetru Hill town is the main settlement, and supports craftsmen, merchants, and the Voivode's emerging administrative apparatus. The town also houses the county's professional men-at-arms, though many of these will be moved to the castle when that is completed. The county's main industries are wool production and leather tanning, though iron has been mined in the region since ancient times, and iron mines are being developed as well. Small fortifications have been built in various mountain passes, allowing for ease of defence against forces from other parts of the region. Additionally, a castle is being built near Sânpetru Hill. As Radu's family have been known as "eagles," the castle is colloquially called the "Eagle's Roost." Built into the side of a mountain, the castle is being designed to be easily defendable and to host the county's fighting men. North of Sânpetru Hill is Deva, the other major settlement of the county. Deva was originally a walled town on the south bank of the Mures River almost directly north of the county seat, but it has also been further expanded. In the reign of John the Pious, a bridge was built spanning the river, allowing for the county's expansion into the northern bank of the Mures river. Now the town includes districts on both sides of the river. Furthermore, towers are being constructed on either side of the Deva Crossing, allowing for the defense of the bridge, and for the collection of tolls from travelers. The church in Sânpetru County is headed by Cyril, the Bishop of Sânpetru Hill. Cyril is a Greek cleric, and is subject to the Patriarch of Constantinople, but not to any intermediate archbishop. The Bishopric of Sânpetru Hill uses the Byzantine Rite, in the Greek language. Furthermore, Cyril has begun to discuss plans for the construction of a monastery near the Eagle's Roost. Radu has agreed under the stipulations that the monastery be dedicated to Saint Peter, and that its construction begin after all the County's current major construction projects are complete. Comital Army Total Fighting Men: 4124 Knights: 216 Light Cavalry: 508 Swordsmen: 1334 Spearmen: 826 Archers: 1240 The professional military class is drawn from the ranks of minor Vlach nobles and knights from the west, as well as the trained men-at-arms retained by the Voivode and his barons. Most of these professional fighting men live at Sânpetru Hill or Deva Crossing, and most of those at the Sânpetru Hill town are being moved into the Eagle's Roost as it nears completion. Additionally, small forces are present in various towns and positions in the county in order to raise levies if necessary and to guard the mountain passes and collect tolls. Additionally, perhaps another four thousand men can be raised in time of war from the ranks of peasants, mountain clans, and town militias. These are either untrained or have a small amount of training but they can be used to bolster the Voivode's forces in times of need. ***** Members of the House Posted Image |
