The history of the O.E. world will be open-ended, but not as open-ended as on the main forum.

There are some important historical events that are definitely considered "canon" and should be acknowledged by every country. I'll describe some of them here. (Note that some of the dates seem weird. That is well, because the events described are supposed to be mythologically significant rather than strictly historical)

The start of human history is set to the year 11,557 BC. According to tradition, in that year, a coalition of gods led by the Allfather fought a great battle against the demon Satan on the plain of Meggido in the land of Canaan. There were humans who fought on each side of the battle. According to tradition, Satan was defeated and his faction banished from the mortal realm. The years 11,557 BC to 451 BC are considered the Mythological Epoch.

In 451 BC the Romans destroyed the city of Carthage. In that same year, the Mandate of Heaven was proclaimed in China, the Vedic scriptures were completed in India, and according to Maya tradition, their god Kaminal, satisfied with his work so far, left his people and returned to the other-world. This momentous year is considered the end of the Mythological Epoch, and the Ancient Epoch commenced, ultimately spanning the years 451 BC to 612 AD.

Tradition holds that in the year 612 AD, a ragged force of Arab tribesmen led by a self-proclaimed prophet, Muhammad, accidentally opened the Seals of Satan, thereby unleashing Satan's forces onto earth again. What happened next is the subject of dispute. Some claim that Muhammad defeated the forces of Satan, and this caused him to gain power and heavenly favor. Others claim Muhammad made a pact with Satan, allowing him to gain unholy power. In any case, Muhammad's army established one of the greatest empires in human history, the Caliphate, and his rise to power marks the end of the Ancient Epoch and the beginning of the Medievval Epoch, which spanned the years 612 and 1453.

In the year 845, five great Empires collapsed - the Carolingian Empire, the Gupta Empire, the Tang Empire, the Maya Empire, and the Caliphate. The only great power left intact was the ancient Byzantine Empire but even then only after a crippling civil war. This portentous year is considered by some to be the Meridian Year, the midpoint of human history.

In the year 1170 one of the most powerful rulers in human history, Genghis Khan, began his career. His legacy remains disputed.

In the year 1453, the Turks sacked Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, an event of cosmological significance that ushered in the current epoch, which, of course, people alive today refer to as the Current Epoch.

The RP begins roughtly 350 to 400 years into the Current Epoch.

That is also a tentative history of events, your suggestions for revision are appreciated.

Yes, that would work well I think.

Between the 350th to 400th years of the Current Epoch.

Old Earth is an analogy of real history, circa 1800-1850. The early to main phases of the industrial revolution.

THE HOLY EMPIRE OF ETHIOPIA

Converted to the One True Faith (Orthodox Christianity, for reference purposes) in the time of the Apostles, and the keeper of a holy bloodline stemming from the great Solomon, King of the Jews (Jesus was also part of this bloodline), the Holy Empire of Ethiopia has for centuries held its ground against tides of Pagans and Infidels (Muslims, again for reference). They have labored long in silence, cut off from the rest of Christendom. But Ethiopia has grown strong in this void. The villages, out of necessity, slowly became mobile fighting units. The men learn to kill before they learn to farm. Even women were trained to be warriors. Only the clergy, elderly, and infantile are exempt from military training. Soon, the Empire began to be able to defend itself against Muslim raiders and pagan tribes. Now, with the advent of steam technologies, Ethiopia is poised to become a new Horde, sweeping up from the south to destroy Islam, with the intention of bringing the former lands of the Apostles back to the True Faith.

Thiruvananthapuram, Thiruvithaamkoori Empire

After ages of fighting against the Gupta invaders of the north, cheer came quickly to the Malayalee tribes who had united against the foreigners whom had threatened the lands of Kerala, and won. The local rajas had come together to choose one who would lead them all to a time of peace and prosperity, with themselves as the aristocracy. Among all the Nair families, the family Kurup had served with most distinction against the Gupta. And among the Kurup generals and warriors, one stood high above the rest.

That man, was Shri Chithira Thirunal Ramakrishna Kurup, the man who would be Samraj.

Today, just weeks after the fall of their enemies, he was to be coronated, where he and his family would forever more lead the Malayalees, and later the Tamils and the rest of the Dravida to an era of prosperous glory.

The Grand Duchy of Lithuania

Posted Image

Lithuania, on the shore of the Baltic Sea, has had a very intriguing role in European development, in various ways: militarily, economically, politically and religiously. It is the oldest non-Christian state in Europe, and defeated the Tuetonic Order during the Baltic Crusade. About a tenth of the population retains pagan beliefs, while most of the populace follows a Christian-Pagan hybrid religion, formed by cultural diffusion. Only a small proportion of the societal elite are pure Christians.

Modern Lithuanians are an unusual amalgam of Catholicism and a fierce pride in their pagan past. Many will proudly state that Grand Duke Jogaila and his cousin Grand Duke Vytautas the Great defeated the Crusading Teutonic Order during the Baltic Crusades, with the help of the Polish Empire. Despite planned unification of Poland-Lithuania, several factors led to this never occuring, the death of Duke Jogaila primary among them. As a result, Lithuania never truly converted to Christianity, but slowly melted two religions together to form the hybrid Christian-Pagan religion that dominates Lithuania today.

The vast majority of Lithuanians believe in a full pantheon of gods and spirits, but view the Christian God as the most powerful of all. The Lithuanian Christian Church is seperate from the Catholic and Protestant faiths, complete with its own version of Genesis, in which Yahweh spent the seventh day, not resting, but creating the other gods and spirits to help Him. Most Lithuanians only specifically worship Yahweh, but profess a belief in a multitude of gods. Christian churches are more numerous than any pagan temple.

The Grand Duchy has not yet begun industrialization, and is an incredibly weak state. The Duchy is corrupt, the military small, and armed with outdate muskets, instead of armed rifles.

The Republic of Venice and Genoa

Posted Image

Having obtained informal independence from the Byzantine Empire to the west, the city-state of Venetia first flourished during the High Middle Ages, when trade with the Levant came to be of great importance to the west, as the port of Venice developed into the premier location for the trading of goods from the Orient. The new found wealth which resulted was largely dedicated to the aiding of the Crusades of the Roman Catholic Church, as a deep tradition of Catholicism came into being. The actions of Venetian Doge Enrico Dandolo during the Fourth Crusade resulted in the pillaging of Constantinople by crusader armies ferried across the Mediterranean by Venetian ships, and such belligerent action resulted in the Venetian-Genoese Wa, which lasted from 1352-1355, at which point Venetian troops routed the defending Genoese, bringing this region of western Italy under the Doge's authority.

In 1605, following the arrest of two members of the Catholic clergy on charges of bribery, Pope Paul V announced the excommunication of the Kingdom of Venice and Genoa. Angry citizens stormed the gates of the Doge's Imperial residence in Venice, and shortly afterward monarchical forces surrendered unconditionally to Italian Republicans, who in turn declared the Doge's domain to be "The Republic of Venice and Genoa."

This revolution, one which made the Republic the first wholly democratic nation in the world, weakened the military power of the nation and led to their defeat at the hands of the Ottomans in the late 17th century, ending Italian influence in the eastern Mediterranean. Still, Today Venice remains a trading empire of little tangible military strength but armed with coffers deeper then those of Rome itself.

Ottoman was since long an empire in crisis .Long before it had dominated all islamic people, from the Persian mountains to the Maroccan deserts . However those times were since long finished : the empire was weakened by Austria and Balcanic states at north, from beduins in Arabian desert and from Persians in its eastern borders .
However a current of reformation was spreading over the empire and the same sultan Selim III, and then Mahmud II, could create a new modern army and the bases for occidental universities .
This was done thanks to foreign advisor coming from France, country that the empire as always considered as a friend .
The main enemies of the empire is today Russia, that in a very short war has privated the empire from Crimea and his vassal, the khanate of crimea .

From the beging the Scots have had harsh lives. After being expelled from their homes lands in Ireland, they had to fight Picts, the orginal inhabitants of Scotland, who had fought off the Romans. And after their conquest of the Scottish Highlands the Vikings came apon the British Isles.

In the year 1296 the English invaded Scotland and the burtal war that followed saw the rise and fall of great heros, William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, Andrew de Moray.

History of Varyag

Posted Image

Years ago when humanity was young, groping out into the world, a demon by the name of Mal looked upon the ignorance of mankind with pity. Mal took the form of a beautiful woman and came to a man (of no particular significance) to make a Pact with him. Mal offered the man an innate understanding of the world around him, the knowledge of how things work would become natural to him, and in return (in order to repay Mal for Mal’s kindness) the man would be cursed with a curiosity that could not be sated – a burning desire to push the limits of his knowledge and explore new depths.

The man readily agreed to the Pact, and armed with this new understanding he did many things. He experimented with his crops, and found new ways of providing bountiful harvest. He turned his hand to magics, and discovered many wondrous and forbidden things. But then he turned his mind to war. And in war the man found a new master, for he excelled both in forging weapons and understanding tactics. Thus the man brought war upon his neighbours and spread his seed within their daughters, and put their sons to work spreading his doctrines. Man was pleased with the power Mal had placed within his reach, and, in a misguided attempt to honour the demon, the man took Mal’s name to be the name of his tribe of kinsman.

But Mal was not happy. It was not war and conquest that Mal desired. The man had turned himself away from secrete things and the pursuit of new knowledge and Mal was displeased with this betrayal. And so Mal set her sights to a woman. This woman, again of no particular significance, had dabbled in magics and had been sentenced to death for it when her ignorant husband had caught her. Taking pity on woman, Mal transformed into a wise old crone and whisked the woman away under the cover of night. And so, Mal made a Pact with the woman. She too would have an innate understanding of the world, only this time Mal stipulated that she should keep the full extent of her knowledge secrete – especially from men.

The woman was subtler than the man. And, while the man’s mighty tribe would be defeated and scattered to all corners of the world by servants of the All-Father, the woman’s secret covens remained secret and they insidiously spread. But ultimately, this secrecy would be the undoing of the woman’s legacy, for in order to better hide their true purpose many cults adopted the trappings of righteous worship only to forget their true purpose in order to believe their own lies. But again, the followers of Mal were spread to all corners of the world.

And so it was that Mal became disparaging with man and woman alike: for half of mankind was barbarian and the other foolish. And so Mal concocted a plan to harness the better qualities of each.

The Scattered Men of Mal and the Hidden Women of Mal would meet and know each other for the first time in when the Empire of Rome was mighty. And each took exception to the other waging the Shadow War to exterminate those they believed were unworthy of Mal’s blessings. The Shadow War was bloody, but irrelevant, and in 486 in the abandoned city of Londinim The Concord was reached – peace between both Tribes of Mal. The peace would be consummated with the birth of two heirs to both lines – and boy and a girl born of the leader of the Scattered and the leader of the Hidden. The boy was born first, and he grew to manhood and headed East for strange lands – his story is not important. The girl was born five years after the boy, and grew to womanhood.

The girl, called many names among them Guinevere, would kill her parents and lead their followers north. There, on the edges of civilisation, Guinevere brought her followers before King Ongentheow. There she would live for two hundred and thirty years, spreading her followers and the blessings of Mal among the people. It was there that she wrote the Code of Varyag. Ongentheow adopted Varyag as the name of his Kingdom, and the Code of Varyag continues to inform the Varyags' way of life to this day.

The current King of Varyag is Thorbjörn "Thunderfist" III of the Whagand Clan

****

The Varyags hold dearly to the Code of Varyag. The Code itself is a weighty Tome that informs all aspects of Varyagian life. The modern Varyags are a hardy people, little different from the Vikings of King Ongentheow’s time: they are a seafaring people of traders and warriors eager to explore the world and do battle. Varyags are known to pick fights for little or no reason.

As a people the Varyags are encouraged to disbelieve in fae creatures, instead focussing on what is practical and real. In secret halls some keep the old beliefs of Oden the All Father (and Mal the Gifter) alive, but for the most part the Varyags see themselves as debunkers of superstition and bringers of understanding – acts of god are simply seen as co-incidence, magicks as a crude application of science, and supernatural creatures no more fantastic or threatening than wild animals. The Varyags detest religion and devotion to mysticism but are eager to hear tales of bravery and battle (and so they will gladly suffer the faithful so long as they are adequate storytellers). Many Varyags offer their services as “monster hunters” – having no fear of haunted woodland or fell beasts.

King Thorbjörn, as any King of Varyag, wields absolute authority and Varyag is semi-feudal. The King alone has the authority to appoint Thegns – who serve as Varyag’s nobility. The Council of Lords is made up of twelve Thegns elected by the populous. Males of military age (16-70) and former soldiers have suffrage so long as they have not been convicted of crimes against the Code of Varyag. Women may not vote save in one special circumstance: in the event that a male of military age lives in his parents’ home and is supported by his parents then he cedes his right to vote to his mother (this cession is automatic if the male is not serving in the military and optional if he is currently serving). The Council of Lords is responsible for most of the day to day running of the nation, with the King serving primarily as a figurehead (though the King’s authority is a higher one than the Council). Any Varyag with at least one freeman who has pledged an oath of loyalty to him may call himself Knight and take the title of Sir. Bands of adventures made of Knights (and indeed Thegns, but not Lords) and their followers travel by land, sea or air in search of adventure.

The Varyags are renowned for their seafaring abilities, but are interested in all forms of transport and exploration. Recently they have started to make extensive use of steam-powered engines – particularly in locomotives and dirigibles. Airships are seen by Varyags as the pinnacle of technological marvels and are viewed as the ultimate symbol of wealth, status and martial power. Balloons sailed on the wind are also employed for a number of purposes – though vessels without a steam engine do not carry the same prestige.

Varyag infantry are primarily armed with spear-like bayoneted flinklock rifles and are apt at hand-to-hand combat. Muskets have all but been phased out of military service in favour of rifled weapons, but hand-to-hand combat is seen as being more honourable and efficient than the use of firearms. All Varyag males of military age are expected to carry a seax at all times for use as a tool and weapon. Varyag officers often carry an axe to denote their rank but Generals, Knights and Thegns favour swords.

Varyags’ praise independence and reliance on others is seen as weakness. While slavery is legal in Varyag, it is seen as dishonourable for a household to be unable to support itself and perform it’s own duties.

The nation is called the Kingdom of Varyag.
The people of Varyag are called Varyags (Varyag for singular).
Goods from Varyag are Varyagian – calling a person Varyagian rather than Varyag is equivalent to naming them a slave (usually highly insulting).
The Code of Varyag is a book that dictates how a Varyag should live their life. The basics of The Code are taught to children from a young age. The Code is looked upon reverently and to disrespect The Code is to turn traitor to the entire Kingdom (thus it is always the “Code of Varyag”, never the “Varyagian Code”). Varyags do not expect foreigners or slaves to understand or follow the code – but those that do are accorded respect.

The True God of Varyag is, of course, Mal. Who thrives on secret worship - made all the more potent by the atmosphere of disbelief. The old Viking gods (Odin, Thor, Freyja, Loki etc) have small followings, but for the most part they're not believed in (though their holdidays are sometimes celebrated as an exuse to feast, and their names are often taken in vain as curse words). Christianity enjoys a love-hate relationship with Varyag - in that the Varyags love it when Christian armies try to convert them as it gives them cause to battle worthy foes.

OOC: I wonder, why does the Prophet of Islam have to "break the seal" of Satan?

Göktürk Empire

Posted Image

The Turks had come in many waves. They had defeated the Chinese as the Uyghurs, and they had swept over Europa several times as Huns and destroyed the Roman Empire. They had come as the Golden Hord, bringing terror upon the world. They were the Mughal kings of India and the Mamluk rulers of Egypt. They were fierce warriors, and able tacticians, born soldiers.
And now the Gokturk Empire was about to bring the Turks back to power again. Not like those degenerate Persianized and Arabized fools of the Persian or Ottoman Empire, but as the true preservers of Turkic culture.
Modernizing and bringing his Empire to the top is Oğuz Han's greatest goal. He wants to jump start the Industrial Revolution in his country. But he's facing many obstacles. A great many of the people in his country are living a nomadic life, the old way of the Turks, there are several centers of wisdom, but not enough, the military needs modernization, the tribal structures are causing trouble and tension is building up between the Tengriists living in the far eastern sides of the Empire and the Muslim rest of the population.

OOC: I wonder, why does the Prophet of Islam have to "break the seal" of Satan?

A small scouting party of Arabian horsemen were exploring the ruins of the city of Babylon, where the portal to Hell was located. There in the ruined city they accidentally broke the sorcerous wards that separated Hell from Earth; demons poured out, and slaughtered the Arabs. Later Muhammad's forces defeated the demonic legions and with considerable difficulty re-sealed all the portals to Hell.

Or did they make a deal with Satan?

As you never said either way and that there was debate about it (it being the history of Old Earth).

Because I sure hope that the debate is still there, as I would not want it to have been decided either way. Because well, I liked having there be that debate. But if it has been decided...

You're right, I take my last post back. We can leave the matter up for debate.

Let's say that what is agreed upon is that Arab horsemen accidentally broke the seals of Hell. What happened next is a point of contention.

I would recommend you reread it.
The first time Hz.Muhammed (sav) broke the seal and released Satan, in now it is some Arab tribe breaking the seal and releasing Satan, while Hz.Muhammed (sav) destroyed it, or for debate purposes made a deal with it.

Not really, before it was more a mention of his forces, all he did was expand upon it, and did not say what happened either way as he recanted his statement.

So basically nothing changed, he just expanded upon it more, from saying he and his forces did this to, some guys from his forces went over here and did this.

Nothing was changed, just expanded upon.

Draxis is correct.

The first time I wrote Muhammad broke the seals, it was a shorthand for saying that his forces did so, but not necessarily himself. Sorry if that caused confusion, however nothing has changed in terms of the storyline.

If Muhammad personally led the small advance party that was in Babylon that fateful day, he would most certainly have been overrun and killed by the unleashed demons, and therefore the revelation of Islam would remain incomplete, and the entire course of history of the game would be radically altered.

However, the revelation of Islam is considered completed in Old Earth, which means Muhammad could not have personally been in Babylon that day, and therefore did not die that day.

The next RP I'm going to do, I'll write a thread detailing events surrounding the breaking of the Seals of Satan, since it is a highly interesting event that led to the establishment of the Satanic Republic, a most interesting nationstate ruled directly by Satan. :D
