I found this on wikipedia, and tried to find the error. Can you? I bet Paradise will, heh.

Let a=b.
Square both sides: a²=b²
a²-b²=0 ... [1]
(a+B ) (a-B )=0 ... [2]
a²-b×b=0
a²-a×b=0 ... a=b, so substitute a instead of b.
a(a-B )=0 ... [3]
[2] and [3] are the same expressions: a(a-B )=(a+B )(a-B )
divide both sides by (a-B ): a=a+b
a equals b: a=a+a
divide both sides by a, 1=1+1
1=2
Therefore, 1+1=1+2=3

"Divide both sides by a-b": dividing by 0.

"Divide both sides by a-b": dividing by 0.

That's it.

I don't think that's just an error; it is a sin. In fact, I believe that if you divide by zero, then demons drag you straight to hell when you die.

Is an asymptote a direct portal to hell?

Yes, they are the modern version of the caves and caverns and gaping chasms that used to lead into hell in the days of old.

That's slightly more impressive, but more confusing, than my simple 1=2 proof.

Really, fooking obvious.

In the APL programming language, you can set a system variable to get one of three results:

Option 1 - a/0 = Domain Error
Option 2 - a/0 = 0

There is also the possibility of setting a system variable so that:

Option 1 - 0/0 = Domain Error
Option 2 - 0/0 = 1.32564e23 (largest number available on the system)
Option 3 - 0/0 = 0
Option 4 (my personal favorite, and what I think should be the correct answer) 0/0 = 1

Now, arguement - why shouldn't 0/0 = 1??

0 can go into 0 an infinite number of times, thus saying that it is equal to one is wrong.

Law one of math : Any number divided by itself = 1
Law two of math : 0 divided by any number = infinity
Law three of Math : You cannot divide a number by 0

Which law applies to 0/0??

0/0 = x, x can be any number and doesn't have to be one or infinity.

0/0 = x --> 0x = 0

x can be 0, 1, 5, infinity, anything.

I believe I was taught that 0/0 is still dividing by zero and therefore illegitimate.
