The red ring is a result of a design defect in the 360. It overheats because there isn't enough room for the heat to exit properly.

And there is no fail-safe shutting down the Xbox 360 when it reaches a critical internal temperature?

ALL computers have this, though it is usually possible to deactivate it in the BIOS.

When I purchased my 360 this summer I felt some intense feelings of regret which stemmed back to my sense consumer loyalty. I had grown up using playstation (After a brief stint with a sega genesis) and then, as any honorable playstation owner, I had upgraded to a playstation 2. True, I had dabbled in ninetendo with the N64, but after getting a Gamecube in Christmas 2002 I left the Nintendo line of consoles, never to return. Cast into the cold world, I clutched even closer to my PS2, accusing the upstart XBox of having "horrible controls" and a computerish feel.

However, when my PS2 began to scratch my discs I sent a quick e-mail to the PS2 help-line asking what I could do, only to be rebuffed by some calculating and heartless Playstation representative. As my games ceased to work one by one (first NBA Live, then Madden, and so on) I thought that I should remain loyal to Playstation, and awaited the day when PS3 would be declared free of bugs. Finally, on a warm Saturday in early August, I was shocked to find that my favorite game was no longer playable- GTA San Andreas. I cursed the heavens, the Gamestop representative who had sold it to me, and even my own stupidity. But these feelings of ill will soon focused on the one party whom I held solely responsible: Playstation.

My heart filled with scorn, I got to work researching what my next console would be. PS3 had its advantages, but the high price drove me to the enemy camp, and in late August I took up my hard earned summer job cash and drove to the local EB Games, where I purchased an XBox 360 and the latest Madden.

I have been completely satisfied with XBox 360, discovering the wonders of Halo through the use of its back play capabilities, enjoying graphics which sated any desires I might have had, and engaging in online play which exceeded my every expectation.

I consider myself a Playstation user in exile, cast aside by the cold hand of fortune and chance. One day I shall return to the Playstation, where I played Crash Bandicoot and Home Run Kings 97 for so many hours. But for now, I can only recommend that you get the XBox 360 and join me in awaiting the return of a competitive Playstation system, one which will set right the topsy turvy gaming world I now reside in.

lol, thanks for the feedback lebowski.

I stopped purchasing consoles after my SNES and my Nintendo 64.

I don't lie when I say that I have NEVER played Playstation or Playstation 2. I did however play on Gamecube, Xbox and Dreamcast. These were nice consoles, but I was a hardcore PC gamer back then. I couldn't imagine buying one of those when I could instead upgrade my computer.
