Xbox 360 or Playstation 3?

I've been thinking buying one of these two for Christmas (a gift from me to me), but I don't know which one to choose.

The things I know are:
- Most great third-party games will be released on both;
- Xbox does have exclusivity on games like Halo and Gears of War;
- PS3's Blue-Ray driver is a serious advantage over Xbox's DVD-HD driver;
- PS3 is more expansive than Xbox 360.

I like the following types of games: shooters (first person or third person), RPG and strategy (either turn-based or real-time).

So, knowing that, which console should I choose? (since I don't know, I will cancel my vote)

Xbox is better. Xbox Live is better than the PS online service. Also, in terms of graphics, Xbox developers generally understand how to use the engine better than PS developers, so the games look just as good if not better than PS3. We've also got better games.

Is it true you have to pay for the online service? It's free on the PS3.

What good games exclusive to Xbox are you referring to (except Halo 3 and Gears of War)?

Alright (some of these are only exclusive on the console, so there might be PC versions):

Bioshock
Halo 3
Gears of War
Mass Effect
Half Life 2: The Orange Box (I think)

Bioshock seems nice. I don't know about Mass Effect. Half Life 2 is a PC game for me, I just can't imagine playing it without a mouse

If I buy a Xbox 360, that implies I will have to buy a separate Blue-Ray driver some time in the future (and they are still very expansive).

Damn it is so complicated. If the Xbox had a Blue-Ray driver instead of a DVD-HD driver, I'd choose it over the PS3.

As for the online service, I don't care much about it. In fact, I would not be willing to pay to use it (so Xbox Live is out of question). If it was free, I'd probably use it occasionally.

PS3 is going to really start coming out in the next year. Some of the best new releases are going to be slated for the PS3, which has greater graphic capabilities.

And their controllers is 10x better.

I love my PS3, which got me and my friends busy with Call of Duty 4.

So you don't regret to have paid more for your PS3 than you'd have paid for a Xbox 360?

PS3 son! Get it. It may have gotten a slow start out of the gate, but the library it will have by the end of it's run will be far greater in number and in quality than that of the 360. Also, the first games of said library will be coming out within the next year.

In terms of processing ability, PS3 will overtake the 360 very quickly in the next year, graphics only being the tip of the iceberg. As for the price, it'll be worth it in the end (if I had said money, I would already have it..alas, I am perpetually broke...which is why I have no other system either). Besides, if price is the worry, it'll be knocked down as the manufacturing process is further refined and some features extraneous features are either removed or replaced with something less expensive.

I'll be surprised if the PS3 lasts very long at all.

Paradise I can understand your problem. I myself was a playstation man for a good while, back to the consoles beginnings. However, when the company tried to rip me off by outrageously over pricing the PS3 I decided to go with the 360 and I can't say anything bad about that decision. It's a good system and I have had no problems with it. Plus I highly recommend Assassins Creed as a good game to play, I just got it and it kicks ASS!

Assassin's Creed is on PS3 too.

And I agree, it looks pretty nice!

Think of it this way: you could get an Xbox and a Wii for the price of the PS3.

I have a feeling the PS3 may be the last game system from Sony...I see it going the way of game system of the past.

Oh please. Even if it were to fail (which it will not...a slow start is hardly a failure, especially considering the games coming up for it), that would hardly be Sony's last system. If that kind of thinking were true in the industry, Nintendo would have been out of business after the N64 came out. And before you cite Sega, Sony is far larger and with a bigger budget than Sega could ever have.

The PS3 is the Dreamcast.

It's amazing. It's got nine cores! For once, Sony has made the technically superior console.

But... it's so expensive. And I'm not convinced of blu-ray superiority over HD.

Sony games... I've never really be impressed with. They seem pretty genreric and have little replayabilty. But they are mass produced to give a huge range.

Next year will be the teller. Either the PS3 will rise up shouting "NINE CORES BITCH" and pimp slap me... or it'll slump off into a corner and die.

But personally. I agree with Maddox. NSFW.

Wii
+ Orginal, cool, fun
- Not for "serious" gamers

360
+ Decent graphics
+ Cool games (like Halo 3)
- Unorginal
- Mickeysoft

PS3
+ Technically superior
- Sony (crap games, BS Hi-fi company, have stolen every good idea they've ever had from Nintendo)
- Over priced for a console

My favourite:

Eighth Generation Console
+ Microsoft's follow up to the 360 is gonna kick the crud out of the PS3 - and probably be cheaper to.
- See all the downsides to 360
- Fictional console that doesn't exist and probably won't exist until 2009

Right now, the PS3 isn't a success so there's no point in getting one. If the PS3 becomes a success, then the consoles that follow it are going to be even better... so I still don't see the point in getting one.

Disclaimer:

While I hate both Sony and Microsoft, nothing in the above post sould indicate any kind of support for Hiroshi Yamauchi. While I like Hiroshi Yamauchi a hellava lot more than Bill Gates and anyone who's ever worked for Sony, he's still a giant douche bag.

Yep :D

As for the Blu-ray vs. DVD-HD, there are twice more blu-ray DVDs than HD DVDs. That's a clear advantage of PS3 over Xbox 360.

And before you cite Sega, Sony is far larger and with a bigger budget than Sega could ever have.

The N64 was a massive success. The playstation sold three times as much the N64... of course the N64 sold three times more than the next leading competitor, made a significant (but less than expected) profit and had a long shelf life. I still play N64 games and I still play on my friends N64 (though, to be fair, I still play orginal playstation games as well - not nearly as often but more often than I play on an actual 64).

The PS3 has a strong line up for 2008. It has amazing hardware. But right now... it's trailing at the back of the console race. It was released in 2006. Sony has sold about a quarter of the number units that Microsoft or Ninendo have.

The market has a lot of seventh generation console owners. With the PS3's price tag... how many Wii and 360 owners are going to splash out because of Sony's 2008 games line up when the eighth generation is right around the corner?

Of course, how many Sony fanboys would buy the PS3 no matter what? And more than that... there are plenty of people like Paradise out there who are sitting on the fence.

So... the PS3 might be a great success. There's a very real chance of it smashing the 360 and Wii into the dust. But anyone closing their eyes saying "it will not fail, it will not fail" is someone who's already emptied their wallet and is desperate to have not wasted their money.

I haven't bought it (or any other console) yet. I have 7 bucks to my name right now :P .

And sure there is a possibility for failure (which I believe is slim really, but thats not the issue), but to think it would make Sony fold and shut down console production an design over one bum system is hardly realistic.

Big chance PS3 will fail.

Very small chance Sony will stop making consoles.

There. Debate over.

Wikipedia disagrees with this statement citing:

October 23, 2007, 351[2] titles have been released on Blu-ray Disc in the United States (32 of those titles have since been discontinued).

As of November 13, 2007, 336 HD DVD titles have been released in the USA.

Can you back up your "twice as many" claim? Because I'm a big fan of knowing facts instead of relying on Wikipedia... but my local store has a larger HD DVD section than Blu-ray.

I wouldn't even put it at a big chance. Y'all PS3 haters have called the race too early. I shall laugh when it ends up being successful (not neccessarily more profitable, but popular nonetheless). Xbox was attacked and doomed to similar failure early in its cycle too, and it ended up making second place in the last generation's console war.
