Food Poisoning; Anybody know anything?

Just as the topic says, anybody know anything?

My GF and her parents got sick from some sort of food contamination. From what I understand the doc said they were fine, but to be on the lookout for dehydration from the vomiting and diarrhea.

I've had a similar incident with my own family a long ass time ago with similar Side effects, anybody have any information regarding the sickness?

PS:

I already know about the three primary infection sources; Chemical, Viral, Bacterial. I was hoping for something a little more detailed from someone with perhaps some experience in this sorta thing.

An interesting philosophy but if you contract a toxin that kills you, your body storing any information regarding how to combat said toxin would then be moot.

Luckily, that is not the case here (Praise be to God), so your philosophy holds.

Well, food poisoning isn't likely to be fatal. Even in serious cases, (most first world) hospitals can treat it with reasonable ease (assuming it's bacterial). (Viral and chemical poisioning can be more difficult to deal with, but it's not worth obessing about - unless you eat a lot of fugu :P.)

I'm not going to write an essay on food poisoning, but I wouldn't be worried about it. If you want to give more specific details or ask a question I'll answer it (or ask a doctor at my hospital),

God, when I worked in the Loop (Central Chicago) I must of gotten food poisining once a month from the resturants there. Their food was delivered underground half the time through rat-infested tunnels, and everyone down there knew how to pay off health inspectors, so the "quality" of the produce and meats was always questionable, even at the 4 star places. I always ordered food well-done, but it doesn't mean they thuroughly washed the lettuce. Just part of big-city living, that's what I thought.

Generally, if you cook your food well enough, and wash your produce well enough, you won't experience food poisoning. However, I blame the recent outbreaks of e-coli on illegal immigrants shitting on the food for revenge! Just my untrusting nature!

Indeed, down here its the seafood to watch out for, they can conatian all sorts of chemicals and bacteria. Mostly shrimp which are bottom feeders, along with clams.

I never eat uncooked shrimp.

You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sautee it, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo, pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried, pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich...

I find this interesting. When I eat shrimps, which I love, one of two things happen:

1. Nothing.
2. An incredible attack of paricarditis (sp?) where for about three days I have such an aweful pain in my chest I can barely breathe. I can't lay down because the pain is worse, and the last attack I had was so bad I really was contemplating blowing my brains out to relieve the pain!

Needless to say, I do not eat shrimp any more. My doctor said that paricarditis is not chronic, and canot be triggered by shellfish. I called him an asshole, and found a new doctor. I don't know if it has to do with where the shrimp are from, or what toxins might be in them, and they are always cooked so it isn't a raw thing. I NEVER do sushi!

Now calamari... that's the only seafood I genuninely enjoy. Man I wish I was eating some calamari right now... maybe with some onion rings...mmm... oh god... oh yeah... that's the stuff... tastes soooo good... I think I'm going to...

And I love fried perch. Use to be the staple of the Friday fish fry, but for some reason they've switched to cod, which I don't like as much at all!

Rainbow trout, pan fried! That could be my favorite sea food.

Wait, orange roughy, poached in orange juice. lemon juice and mandirin orange slices, then removed to a warm platter while the juices are reduced to a thick, thick sauce to pour over the fish! Yum!

Wat, wait, wait! Back to the trout, done over the grill with mesquite charcoal, oh yeah, my mouth is watering!

Oh yeah. Food poisoning - anything caught in the Chicago River will do that.

No, iodine sensitivity isn't related to pericarditis (which we studied on thursday, interestingly enough). But if your doctor was incompetant enough to say there's no such thing as chronic pericarditis then I'd say misdiagnosis might have been on the cards. Assuming diagnosis via physical examination or a chest x-ray rather than blood cultures or MRI (and given your age demographic and BMI) it'd be an easy mistake to assosiate chest pain caused by an adverse reaction to iodine for pericarditis - especially if they treated it with painkillers and anti-inflammatories.

But yes, viral infection is the leading cause of pericarditis - and eating bottom feeders is a good way to expose yourself. But still... assuming the food's been cleaned and cooked... that's some nasty-ass shrimp you're eating if it's still packing enough virus matter to dick with your heart.

(Disclaimer: Not a doctor. Can't sue a person for taking random advice found on a internet forum.)

Also... bleh. I dislike fish a lot. And lobster. Because lobster tastes like a cross between shrimp (gone off turkey flavour) and fish.

Lol, I mainly stopped eating seafood because I got headaches. But now, if I even walk past the fish counter I start to retch. It's quite gay and embaressing lol.
