The Sutekh Conflict Erupts

Silence.

It was silence that breathed over the expanse. Twas the dead of night and within the empty and shifting sands there stood not a soul.

Until that silence was broken.

The desert air was suddenly radded by the scream of MiG-25 Foxbats screeching across the land in their low pass. Among several such locations an occurance could be seen. The jet fighters were on a course so that they could intersect across the southern portion of the Sutekh landscape and present their payload to certain military targets.

Several days before armored reconnaissance vehicles, transported on the earlier laid transportation trails set across the aforementioned landscape, had made their way across this chosen landscape to select targets of particular military importance. Some of these were not lucky enough to return.

Among the more interesting sites were several storage facilities as well as a collection of infantry barracks and supply houses. Each wave of the Foxbats were on their way to a certain, prescribed member of these targets.

Behind them, moving at a far slower rate, was a series of transport planes and ground based APCs that provisioned for the forward assault. Zeelar had decided to attack with it's hand heavy first - a hand that if successful would make the rest of the war quite easy. However if it was not, it was a hand that Zeelar could not replace.

The subsequent waves arrived at their destinations. To this they began to proceed to hammer down what they could - air-to-ground missiles were quickly launched at military barracks. Other facilities received converted air-to-air missiles and other such fodder on a lesser status. The pilots, whether successful or not, were extremely careful in one respect - they were not to hit any target that was considered "illegal."

Hospitals, command posts, and any civilian areas were left totally untouched and largely unparsed. Soon the MiGs would adopt a 'cloverleaf' flight pattern - particularly useful as whatever force was mustered against them was mustered. Despite this, surely not all of these planes would find themselves flying back home.

Eight large propeller driven bombers would be approaching along with the transport and support aircraft, ready to clear the way for a paratrooper endeavor. These would make quite the fattened calf among targets, being largely unguarded...

To travel alongside the APCs were various armored craft in a 'delta' formation for the security of the troops they guarded. Though they were in a state of fine repair, they were largely a sorry sight - called out before their due and some were of designs that passed into obsolescence. Zeelar's original plans originally called for the power of the individual fighting man. Should they be deployed, these would be a formidable force, however the armored vehicles that they play the stead of were certainly not.

It was unfortunate for the initial Zeelaran strike against Sutekh-Te-Ankh that the southern borders fostered the most military presence. The legions recalled from the northern Congo had returned a couple days prior and were already organizing the protection of the kingdom. The strike was met with readied surface-to-air missiles, striking down jets that dared bombing raids against the camps and installations that surrounded Ramatan, the southernmost Sutekhite city.

It didn't take long for the Sutekhites to scramble their own fighter jets from nearby airbases to swarm and repel the Zeelaran MiGs. While damage had been dealt to Sutekhite military posts, the Zeelaran airstrike was chased from Ramatan's airspace. Still, the infantry and armored forces remained at their perimeter guard of the city, expecting the next wave of attacks at any moment.

With the destruction of the air assault, the oncoming Zeelaran ground forces halted their progress. Almost immediately camps were set up, forming yet another home away from home for the Zeelaran troops. Along with this, several mind fields began to be produced along their perimeter.

The soldiers approached via the Exarchate. Roads, and railways, all were open for Hispanic use, courtesy of their membership in the GTO. It was all under wraps of course, no one knew the Exarch had signed the treaty, but it was the perfect way to attack the unsuspecting North. Satellite images, as well as Zeelar intelligence, showed Hispania that most of the defenses of Sutekh-Te-Ankh were located along the southern region, and the North was relatively undefended. What a better site to attack from?

Major General Ignacio Pinochet checke dto makre sure all was in position. Infantry, tanks, helicopter support. No major air strikes were planned yet, but they were fueled up and combat ready back in Zaragoza.

All they awaited was an order from the Zeelarian high command. The Hispanic government had already authorized an invasion. Pinochet hoped it was soon, before their presence was realized.

Long range artilary pieces had rolled up to these forward implacements and encampents over the evening. While each base only received a few, the amunition they received along with them was in relatively large quantities.

To these, the southern portion of the nation was again attacked. However, this time they did not do it with men. Rather, the long range shells were being hurled in numbers at the bases that not so long before eradicated the Zeelaran air assault.

Furthemore, several large, though conventional, surface to air to surface styled missles were launched, in an attempt to target the Sutekh encampents.

Hispanic officals would find, however, an ominious message left by Zeelaran agents. Only one word was upon it - Go

4:30 am, Exarchate-Sutekh border

“Chicos, prepararos. Ya es la hora.”

“Que pasa, capitán?”

“Pero, eres tonto? Que, crees que estamos en África para el fin de semana, unas vacaciones? Dios, mió, hay que atacar a los locos en Sutekh.”

“Oh.”

“Eres tonto, te lo digo enserio. Todos! Vamonos! Cojan sus armas, que sois parte de la primera división. Tendréis ustedes el gran honor de ser los primeros Hispanioles de entrar en Sutekh.”

“Si, señor!”

Quote:

"Boys, get ready. It's time."

"What's up, captain?"

"What, are you stupid? What, you think we're in Africa for the weekend, a vacation? My God, we have to attack the crazies in Sutekh."

"Oh."

"You're an idiot, seriously. Everyone! Gear up! Grab your weapons, you're all part of the first division. You guys have the great honor of being the first Hispanic troops to step into Sutekh."

"YES SIR!"

Hispania managed to avoid the hassles of declaring a state of war by acting under Zeelarian orders, and under their banner. Despite that, it could be clearly seen as the hundreds of tanks ran across the border into Sutekh-Te-Ankh that a foreign power had gotten involved.

The wave was slow and precise. First, helicopters were sent in, scouting the desert terrain for villages, towns, or military outposts. Soon after, tanks followed, accompanied by a thousand troops each. This would form the first strike force. It was concentrated on the north-west corner of the country, seeming much like a leak had sprung into the country. The light tanks were well suited for this style of war, the soldiers trained for the desert.

Ignacio Pinochet looked from his AWAC at the movement below, and uttered a smile. This as his first major conflict, and it seemed to be going off well. No major resistance, yet. But it would not be that easy. He was sure of it.

As combat progressed in the south, Sutekh-Te-Ankh was retransfering its returned forces throughout the country. The numbers of Pharaoh's Legions in the south dropped as the kingdom slowly rounded out its forces equally to properly defend its borders. Sutekh-Te-Ankh's lightly guarded north would not remain lightly guarded for long.

Back at the front with Zeelar's artillery assault, the Sutekhites retaliated in kind as SSMs were returned against Zeelaran positions. While neither side could see the whites of the others' side, artillery blasted through the sky leaving long trails of smoke. The battle, really, seemed like a coward's fight. Sutekhite bombers were scrambled to raid the enemy lines, dropping their payloads on the encampments.

Northward, very little action was being taken against the Hispanics, land mines that had been placed regularly each year on Sutekh-Te-Ankh's borders taking care of the advancing infantry and armor. The only vehicles the Sutekhites targeted were the airborn helicopters which Sutekh-Te-Ankh reacted to with its SAM battery.

The Pharaoh in his palace wasn't even sweating.

Imperial troops from New Medea were not finished mobilizing when Zeelar struck. Their involvement in this war was a courtesy gesture to the GTO, so they were not particularly rushed to show up at the front lines. It seemed that the Zeelarans had stalled at the border anyway, so there was no real motivation to be expedient. However, the extra time taken to prepare would ensure that Imperial troops would be better prepared to combat the Sutekhis when they arrived. With the banner of the Quintiliana flying high, troops trains began to carry the first few regiments of soldiers to Timbuktu, where they would disembark and begin the march through the Sahara to Sutekh. Hopefully the GTO would save a few pagans for them...

With troop movements towards the north, Zeelaran commanders no longer saw the need to remain still. Artilary fire however would continue, in constant retaliation of the missles launched at themselves by the Pharaohic Legions.

As soon as these bombers were scrambled, MiG Foxhounds along with light fighters were scrambled in retalation to strafe the oncoming planes. And with this, the earlier transports began to grind foreward again.

The advance was slow, as mines had to be carefully located and extracted. They had already lost two light tanks, and almost eighty troops to the mines, and the Hispanic regional command was not willing to risk more lost lives before entering a major conflict. Helicopter recon was also decreasing as SAM sites brought down eight. The good news was that using triangulation, the Hispanic intelligence corps had located a grouping of SAM sites, the destruction fo which would enable the military to steadily advance forward. Two whole divisions were sent with artillery and the bulk of the tank force to take out this location and open a path for air travel.

Meanwhile, airstrikes were ordered and underway. They had gone around the north, through the western border, and managed to lay damage to several towns and villages in that area. The bombing was meant only to demoralize, and caused no real strategic gains.

Furthermore, transport craft ferried 10,000 troops to join the Zeelarian front down south. The Blue Division, as it was known, would operate directly under Zeelarian command.

Like the northern border, the southern border was also lined with land mines. The Pharaoh had always deemed it an applicable way to curb down on illegal immigration. Its usefulness in war was only a bonus. Thus as the Zeelaran transports moved forward, they found themselves hampered by the same difficulty that the Hispanics had come across.

On both fronts, Sutekhite activity increased, primarily using its airforce to deflect its enemy's air raids on both ends. Infantry and armor were mobilized at last, moving in close enough to hit the approaching Hispanics and Zeelarans with mortar fire and semi-automatic guns. Sutekhite tanks rolled through open lines to take pot-shots at the already inundated approaching invaders.

Sutekh-Te-Ankh, while isolating itself from most of the world was not without its formidable defense. The Exiled Kingdom would remain standing.

As Zeelaran progress again halted, demining tillers were called in to break a path through the mine field. Though the progress behind these treaded vehicles was slow, it was continual progress were as there would be yet another bottleneck in the advance.

As the air war continued between both powers, Zeelar began to implace several conventional long range artillery weapons that took advantage of the closer proximity to the Pharonic forces. Though these were not as explosive or large as the missile batteries, this form of artillery was inexpensive to provide munitions for and those munitions could be provided for quite quickly. Thus a line was attempted.

The Blue Division remained at the ready.

Most of the land mines lay behind the Hispanic force as they passed into more heavily populated zones of the northern counties. Placing mines in this area would have hurt the civilian population, so Hispanic generals decided to move quickly through to enter their first town. Few casualties occured because of stray land mines, but morale was hurt because of those few. Meanwhile, mortar rounds landed among the troop squadrons, killing some, but the range at which they were launched rendered most of them ineffective. However, they too did their part to scare the Hispanic force silly, as well as bursts of fire from far off villages or hills. By the time the force managed to pass the land mine, 3,400 Hispanic troops lay dead from mortar rounds, mines, and gunfire. They had yet to touch a pagan soldier.

But that was behind them. Bombers coordinated with fighter squadrons and conducted air raids over the northern cities. Smoke and fire could be seen from the Hispanic position, signalling towns and cities. With the land mines behind them, they could now operate more easily, and they secured a medium-sized zone called the Green Zone. Aircraft would now be able to land here, allowing tanks and more men to enter the country and join the smaller expodentiary force of 30,000 already within the borders. Within an hour of securing the position, the first group of reinforcements had arrived by helicopter.

OOC: I'm a bit too lazy to draw up a map at the moment.

IC:

The general artillery fire continued in southern Sutekh-Te-Ankh lands, close combat still yet to come. This troubled the Sutekhite military commanders, finding the Zeelarans to be too overly cautious. Still, as the enemy lines came carefully through the southern minefield, the Sutekhites continued their battery, hoping to destroy the invader morale as much as possible.

Up north, it was found to disconcerting as the Hispanics secured a zone within the borders. No doubt; however, that after the minefield, artillery, and air battery that morale would be severely weakened. The Pharaoh's forces would continue the teaching of their lesson that the kingdom was not willing to allow outsiders destroy its culture. Thus another airstrike came to raid the Hispanic positions, payloads targeting the camps being erected around Sutekhite villages.

Over the hill, an assembly of Sutekhite infantry and armor was formed to take back the so-called "green zone." With the continuing support from the air, this crusading force would sweep over the area and crush the intruding Hispanic presence. They were proudly led by the bravest, well-trained men in the Pharaoh's legions, the Typhonic Warriors.

A Typhon general raised his ceremonial khopesh and ordered the assault. Numerous tanks and armored battery rolled over the hill with stampeding platoons of soldiers.

The air above swarmed with fighters, bent only on keeping bombs outside the zone. Down below, attack helicopters, previously thrown off my SAM sites, began to patrol the zone. The anti-tank weapons wuld serve many uses against any incoming assault.

Meanwhile, artillary had managed to be set up around the perimeter of the three square mile zone. As AWACs above showed incoming assault teams, the artillary pounded into the pagan positions. Combat engineers frantically set up barbed wire and tank stoppers at the perimeter, but only managed a few areas before enemy fire drove them away.

It would be a tough battle, but one the Hispanics could win. The men dug in their heels. Their low morale went by the wayside. This was clearly kill or be killed. And one thing was for certain. Dying in the desert was not an option.

Amor positioned itself first to inundate the enemy with heavy battery, blasting enemy lines with small explosions. The Sutekhite jet bombers joined into the fray, dropping larger payloads upon the challenging Hispanics. It was their home turf that the Hispanics were intruding on and thus the Sutekhites had the home advantage.

After these initial assaults, the infantry lines charged towards the enemy camp, firing off their guns and rifles. The hill swarmed with them, and using the terrain obstacles for occasional cover, moved ever closer to their prey. The "green zone" would be crushed under Sutekh's holy boot, and the invaders cleansed from the land.

The fighters patrolled above as usual. No major attempt had even been tried to dislocate them, the enemy sending bombers directly to their jaws. Only a few bombers managed to drop their payload. The bigger problem was artillery. That was raining hell on the men, who had little cover. But, suddenly, it stopped, and shouts could be heard from the enemy line. They were charging the zone.

The bombardment had been bad, there was no doubt. Hundreds, if not thousands, lay wounded to a side. But, there seemed to be hope. The pagan fools were charging them. Captain Tebas motioned towards his brigade. They ran forward to the perimeter and got behind the mounted machine guns that had survived, firing thousands of bullets a second into the charging infantry. They stood no chance. Tebas couldn't even believe it. He was laughing. Who the fuck CHARGED against a machine gun?

They managed to take cover here or there, but this was a desert. You don't charge in a desert. Even they knew that.

The offensive never reached the Hispanic lines. Dozens of Hispanic troops lay dead from enemy fire, but it was clearly one of the worst ideas most of these soldiers had ever witnessed. Charging a machine gun. Tebas could not help chuckling to himself.

The charge stopped when the machine gun fire began, and the Sutekhite lines gathered behind available cover. They were in close enough range now from the charge to specifically target the enemy soldiers. Jet fighters came in above to provide cover for the bombing raids, targeting Hispanic aircraft. The Hispanic Captain may have thought the Sutekhites fools, but now the fools were behind stray buildings, desert trees, and rocks, sniping his men.

Back in the armored division lines, a tank was radioed about surviving mounted machine guns. The gunner rotated the tank's main cannon and took aim of the specific area. With a loud bang, a large shell sped straight for the machine guns.

Morale of the Zeelaran troops would not be crushed however, at least not as of yet. As anti-personel mines started to take their toll however, the initial waves of mineclearers were to be broken. And this spirt began it's fatal trickle down the troops.

Finally, with the mines totally behind them, the Zeelaran armored vehicles began an assault, en masse. The newly elicited troops taken from Sutekh's exploits elsewhere on the continent would now be met with moving artilary pieces and tanks that were attempting to clear a path for the troops behind them. Some began to break rank, firing streams of bullets as they engaged the Pharonic Legions.

Slowly but surely, the Hispanic troops began to leave the front, making their way for a town only about a mile behind them. The rest of the army had finished crossing the land mines, and had set up a defensive perimeter around that town. The green zone was lost.

Little by little, the troops gave way to the slowly advancing Sutekh troops. Artillary fired from the new Hispanic base provided cover for the retreating military, and mobile SAM units, as well as Hispanic jets, kept the airways clear. It had been a heavy loss at the Green Zone, with nearly 3,000 dead Hispanics, but they were prepared to dig in. They had four divisions left at home yet, and an economy much stronger than the Sutekh. They would survive a war much better than the pagans could.

Back in Hispania, the Second Air Fleet turned to the skies, prepared to begin major bombing raids and to reinforce the First fleet.

OOC: Actually Sutekh-Te-Ankh's economy seems to be a bit healthier, Hispania. It's not stuck with a 100% income tax.

IC:

The Sutekhite legions held their well-fortified lines against the Zeelaran approach. Gunfire echoed throughout the surrounding desert as the brave soldiers took shots against the marching enemy. The perimeters of Ramatan were well defended and would not be allowed to fall. Morale had not wavered, the Sutekhites having not taken as many losses as their enemy.

Air support of the southern battlefield was superior, having maintained control of Ramatan airspace against Zeelaran jets. The skirmish of the heavens could be heard from above over the gunfire and explosions that rocked through the desert. It was a proud place to be if you served in Pharaoh's Legions.

Back in the north, Pharaohs legions were able to push back the Hispanic forces. The "green zone" was taken and more military personnel organized and moved from nearby to secure the area against further attempts by Hispanic invaders. Like in the south, air combat filled the skies but was not as decisive as the south, remaining at a stalemate.

The next march for the Pharaoh's infantry and armor legions would take them further to the northern border where the majority of Hispania's armies lay. Several generals met within a building in the liberated "green zone" to plot out the next course of action. It was decided that in the dark of night, they would send a division of Typhonic Warriors into the enemy camps and assassinate ranking officers. This would be a further blow to the Hispanic morale.

OOC: From an RP standpoint only: You said you were isolated, while I have just signed the Barcelona Accords. My economy, RP-wise, though not necessarily NS-wise, would be much stronger than your own.

About the assassinations. I'll let a few, literally, by, but I've been playing losses lately and don't want to lose my officers.

The war in North Afriaca was becoming increasingly concerning to the interests of the GTO as a whole. Sutekh was holding up with a weak fight, something that was expected by Caronicilia analysists. The situation, as predicted by Caronicilian military officials, would unfold as follows:

Quote:

SCENARIO:
Zeelaran forces fight the much larger Sutekhite forces via an invasion from the south. They are complimented greatly by Hispanian forces coming in from the north using railways in the Exarchate of Africa.

OPENING STAGES:
Zeelaran forces will make a strong push into Sutekh, facing only small amounts of initial resistance. Hispanian forces will make a somewhat slower advance into the nation. The Sutekhite military machine, however, will soon mobilize to its full potential, and the fight will become more two-sided.

COMBAT STAGES:
A game of shifting will occur as Sutekhite forces engage the invading GTO members. The participating GTO states and the Sutehite forces will push back and forth towards eachother's lines, however the isolationist Sutekh will begin to crack as the GTO forces gain more momentum and supplies from other member states.

CONCLUSION:
Total victory will find the side of Zeelar and the nations vengance will be found. The death of their vice president will be put to justice.

The Caronicilian outlook on the war was bright. It was a wsie investment, in the eyes of Caronicilian officials. That's why the following message was sent to all GTO states waging war on Sutekh.

SECRET

"To the GTO member states currently waging war against the state of Sutekh.
The pagan monsters have spilt Zeelaran blood unprovoked. They will surely pay. In order to enasure that justice is served, we offer an opening of our arms markets to the states engaged in battle with Sutekh, fully. We offer land systems, small arms, limited numbers of infantry equiptment, and vehicles for the sake of the fight."

OOC: This can be found in the thread "Arms depot" in American Continent.

The Zeelaran army was having great difficulty penetrating, especially with this air power. Accompanying the air war now were several older planes, usually used in a suppportive structure. Rather now they were used as 'hunters' - when dogfighting was occuring between high speed modern jets of both sides, these slower planes would enter the combat. Being of such a lower speed they would be more elusive targets. This planning of course only worked for so long before the Sutekh air force would develop an effective counter to it.

Missle launching vehicles would soon join the fray, now having been mobilized from the path that Zeelar had taken so many casulaities to pave. As the line of the Sutekh forces so strongly stood, these vehicles began to rain shells down on them.

Nightfall had come, and on both ends of the war, battle had not abated. Sutekh-Te-Ankh was determined to guard its borders from the threat of the outside world, and with its vast armies, it would do just that. Nightvision goggles aided Sutekhite troops in spotting their enemy in the desert night. Jets continued to fight overhead, the dogfights becoming more confused with slower moving aircraft.

A general at the nearby airfield peered over the shoulder of a RADAR technician at a blipping screen. He stroked his chin in thought for a moment and pointed. "That isn't advantageous as they think it is," he said. "Anyone can point a highspeed missile at them and they won't be able to outmaneuver it. It's like trying to run through a firefight wearing a paper vest in place of kevlar.

"Send orders to fire heatseeking missiles at the damn things and bring them down."

Back at the northern front of the invasion, Sutekh-Te-Ankh sent out its covert team of Typhon Warrior assassins to creep into the Hispanic camps. A master of all forms of combat, a Typhon Warrior could be compared to the ninja of Feudal Japan. Covered in black to blend in with the night, they crept into the perimeters of the enemy camp to target the ranking officers of the enemy.

Each Typhon Warrior would have a varying degree of success or failure, but nevertheless this would be a further blow to Hispanic morale.
