OOC: Making a Bio-Weapon out of a virus that will inevitably kill millions is not going to sit well with a lot of nations if they ever find out, you know...

OOC: Oh my dear, misguided soul... if only you knew of the weapons I already have.

OOC: I guess I am being hypocritical, officially lethal chemicals research is banned in Eleytheria, but I am secretly producing Kolokol-1 and Cyanogen chloride gas.

OUTBREAK!

At 11:00am EST this morning, the new plague broke out in the city of Charleston, West Virginia. U.S. Marines and Goreprime Enterprises Special Operatives were immediately on the scene wearing bio-chem warfare gear. The outbreak was quickly detained, and one Eleytherian national, a tourist, was determined as the source of the virus. All the infected were hastily rooted out and detained, transported to an undisclosed location.

As of now, Charleston remains under lockdown, and no one is allowed in or out of the city limits. The military is under orders to apprehend anyone found breaking this quarantine. Thanks to the wonders of the Beast Chip manufactured by Goreprime Enterprises, the military is able to locate anyone via satellite who goes against the government's orders. The rest of the United States has nothing further to worry about this infectious disease. The government has seen to it that your safety is maintained.

However, if you see anyone on the street that is showing symptoms of the plague, immediately stop in your tracks and remain at least a hundred yards from the person. Next find a phone and call up the authorities and report the infected citizen. There will be an immediate lockdown of the area afterwards and troops will arrive in bio-chem warfare suits and detain infected citizen. Furthermore, all citizens suspecting that they themselves are showing signs of the plague are to immediately turn themselves in to the proper authorities. Anyone infected who does not turn him or herself in and continues refusing to do so will be considered a terrorist and will be charged with the full extent of the law.

So far Alaska remains clear and free of the plague, and will continue to remain so as long as Goreprime Enterprise's regulations on travel and health are met. Despite this minor setback in Charleston, West Virgina, the U.S. remains safe.

The blood samples made it back to Velorya without incident, from whence they were whisked off to several separate labs. However, instead of developing a vaccine, which could be bypassed by a mutation of the pathogen. Instead, the engineers and scientists decided to reverse engineer some members of the virus population into select virophages- pathogens that fed on other viruses. These would be specifically engineered to attack members of the Plague population that didn't share the same mutation. These "hunter-killer cells" would, once incubated in a host, seek viruses to replicate with instead of human cells. Therefore, they would be essentially harmless to the host. Now, all they had to do was engineer the virophage and infect the entire Veloryan population with it...

The European package had somehow reached Draxis, rather than Scandanavia..it was unknown of course who or what would open the package..or if it would ever be opened at all...

OOC: The purpose would be for it to kill any mutants in its own population along with all the others. Thank God for the long incubation, though it doesn't really matter. In truth, you'll see where this goes.

Plague Blog:
Day Three
By Alexander Haverfield

Our hospital's gotten another influx of the infected. CBC's saying that there's about fifty million infected people now. Considering Veta's population, that isn't too bad. Senate's evacuated to Ottawa, but President Jason's refusing to leave. He's sent his family to Ottawa, though. He's a good man. I'm glad I voted for him.

I heard of some outbreaks in the US. Bastards deserve it, after what they did back in the early days of Veta. It's gotten everywhere: far out of North America, everywhere. I heard some rumors that the Germans got it. I don't think any nation in Asia or Africa's got it yet, though.

People's Parliament's trying to pass a law declaring martial law (makes sense), forced quaratine of infected people (makes sense) as well as euthanasia of infected people (NO!). I doubt it will get past Senate, though, but if it does, Supreme Court and the President won't allow it. I voted vehemently no to it. Those English bastards. I'm starting to think those old men might be right.

It still hasn't gotten into Ontario yet, either. I don't know how. I heard some rumors that NLA members were shooting anyone who got near the outskirts of Ontario. The government wouldn't allow that officially, but I doubt they'd try and stop it. Everything's such a mess. Heh, I wonder, according to the great libertarian scholars, who would be initiating force-the shooter or the infected. Heh.

I gave in and let them administer anti-biotics. I'm not dead yet, so maybe it's doing some.

Alexander signing off.

After monitoring the situation for sometimes, oZ Corp. Enterprises would like to offer the Caronicilian government assistance in helping to fight and cure this delay epidemic. Our Pharmaceutical department is one of the best and largest chemical and biological testing and manufacturing centers in the world. We employ only the best and brightest scientist equipped with some of the finest and oZ exclusive technology. If given permission of the Caronicilian government we would like to immediately send over specialize "Hazard Teams" to collect samples as well as some of the inflected and transport them to one of our hospital ships currently located near North America within the Atlantic Ocean. We promise only the highest of care will be given to the infected and nothing will be done with them without express consent from themselves or their next of kin. It is our deepest hope that once we have some knowledge of the virus we can begin to administer drugs which will be able to delay the effects of this plague until a cure can be found. Understand our services will of course be free of charge since we are a company dedicated in helping our fellow human beings.

We of course accept the generous offer of the Oz corp. We hope that they can reach real solutions to the problem, and find an effective way to kill the bacteria as fast as possible. It is exceedingly crucial that we find a cure, or else soon their may no longer be a significant population in Tann Ziel to speak of. As such, we give full authorization to the Oz Corp. to give their own shot at attempting to find succesful antibiotics to combat this strange disease.

Meanwhile, Goreprime Enterprises was already quickly working on a way to find the cure. The infected citizens and Eleytherian national from Charleston, West Virginia, were taken to a highly guarded concentration facility in a forest along the shoreline of Lake Erie. Already microbiologists were quickly toiling over the virus samples, testing different methods to treat the virus.

The infected were kept in isolated cells and only given the bare, daily sustenance to survive while the plague tore and ravaged their bodies. Five individuals had already expired from the disease and their bodies were quickly cremated to prevent further infection to anyone else. The scientists and doctors spent most of their days in decontamination suits as they worked on the plague and its victims from Charleston.

Occassionally Dr. Francis Cornelius would call in via vid-screen from Mt. Weather to check on the progress of the cure. He was constantly dismayed at the slow advances his men were taking.

"How is the progress today?" Francis asked during the most recent check-in. "I hope you've made a few more significant discoveries this time."

"Well, doctor," the head of the installation responded, "we have managed to find that this version of the plague is resistant to most forms of antibiotics. Unlike the Red Plague; however, antibiotics does not aggravate the progression of the disease. Instead, they're merely inaffective. We also tried citric acid, just in case, but that showed no results either." Everyone in the conference room laughed.

"So you've found nothing that hinders the virus yet?" Dr. Cornelius inquired.

"Not yet, doctor, but we'll get there eventually, no doubt about it," answered the installation head. "We have the best experts our nation has working on it. We'll be the ones to find the cure."

"Well double productivity... time is our enemy," commanded Francis. "As we talk, thousands die needlessly throughout North America. Potential customers gone and lost to us." He then disconnected the transmission.

ooc; Is this the Bubanoic Plauge or something else?

Because if its Bubonic, simple anti-biotics will end the epidemic. Silly bacterial infections.

OOC: From what I gather from Caron, it's basically a mutated version of Bubonic, extremely deadly and hard to kill. Ask him more information, not me. He wants the virus to go on for a while, eventually I will release a medication that will very slightly slow down the plagues effects on the body, but not stop it.

Plague Blog:
Day Four
By Alexander Haverfield

Well, looks like this is it.

I've been getting diarhea, I've been getting the black swells, I've been sweating. I'll be dead in a day or so, I'd wager, unless they get this cure out fast. To anyone reading this blog: wish me luck in the next life.

The plague's reportedly gotten into Ontario. This is not good, not good. Nothing major, a few isolated cases...but you know how quickly a few isolated cases can destroy the entire region. They've started opening the quaratine hospitals there too, now.

oZ Corps, some Asian medical company, has said that they are working on a cure. Might be good if they hurry up with it, if you know what I mean. Karna Veta has said it's gonna work with the Corps. I don't know how succesful they will be.

They say that, while this strain of the plague is more lethal than regular bubonic plague, it's not 100% lethal. I could possibly survive it. Futhermore, I might no die tomorrow. I might hold on for a few days, and by than they might have a cure. Maybe.

There's so many things I want to say, but I don't know how to say them. Mom, Dad, Sara, all of my family-I love you. Please remember that. To my friends-looks like this is it. See you on the other side. Good luck.

Signing off with great remorse, Alexander Haverfield.

Day 5 of the official outbreak of the Plague - Republic of Eleytheria-Duo

Plague death counts were now sky rocketing in the country, in 3 days the death tally went from 3,713 to a staggering 12,544. The plague seemed to have delayed effects, but once infected the onset of death is rapid.

First infection may go undetected for as long as week, after 5 to 7 days the virus begins to show its true colors, within 3 to what is believed to be 25 days, the victim is dead. Mortality rate of the infected is believed to be as high as 85%.
------------------------------------------------------------
35 Kilometers Southwest of Kimmirut, Medical Research Facility

Scientists were hard at work studying the plague, tissue samples revealed the bacteria to multiply at an alarming rate, tests in mice seemed to show that the virus turns the immune system against itself within 4 days of infection, which is responsible for the deep puncture wounds as the body begins to eat itself.

It is this self cannibalism of the body that actually feeds the plague, essentially, the body rots away while the victim still lives. Though generally the nerve damage is too extensive to feel much pain other than dull aches.

"Mark, this is interesting" one of the Scientists said as he was peering through a microscope

"What is it, Jacob." his friend replied

"Look at this!"

Looking through the microscope, an ugly little worm like bacterium came into view.
Posted Image

"All right, what am I looking at? It appears as if they have slowed down reproduction. Wait a minute ... what did you hit them with?" Mark said, stunned at what they had discovered

"This here." Jacob said as he lifted up a small brown bottle filled with a nasty silvery gray substance.

"But this is toxic to humans as well, we cannot administer this shit to humans, Jacob!"

"We do not have to, listen, we need to isolate exactly what active ingredient is killing the bacteria, if it is a combination we find the solution, if it is still toxic to humans we find something to add with it to lower its toxicity to the infected people but not to the virus. This is our best hope so far, lets stick with it for now."

"Jacob, it's still not killing the virus, its just slowing it down."

"Wouldn't you want to be treated with at least something to give you hope, Mark? This may slow down the plague long enough for us to find the cure and lower the death counts, think of the thousands of lives that could be saved!"

"And how long do you believe it will extend the survivability of the infected?"

"I do not know, it would depend on how long they have had the plague, new victims could possibly even fight the plague off all on their own, I know it would lower the mortality rate but I am not sure by how much. As for late infected people, maybe a week, give or take a few days."

"All right, we'll begin testing, but I have to take this with my superiors first. Get to work."

"Yes, sir. It will take at least a week to prepare anyhow, hold off the criticism that long, and I can begin some basic tests"
------------------------------------------------------------
Kugaaruk City, Eleytheria-Duo

People in the city were still quite healthy, and plague infections were very rare. Extreme caution was being taken and anyone found with the plague were immediately quarantined.

However the Veloryans at the embassy barricaded themselves in, to ensure the people inside did not run out of emergency supplies, uninfected men in Hazmat suits brought supplies up to the front doors of the embassy, crates wrapped in thick plastic and barrels filled with fuels to keep furnaces, stoves, and emergency generators running.

Secret meeting

Representatives from three multinational corporations, Oz Corp., Anglo-American Corp., and Karna Veta Corp. met to discuss how to find a cure for this plague. Judas Camizu was present, as ever, as a 'consultant.'

"I have heard rumors that other parties are developing 'virophages' and some sort of spiffed-up, sience fiction antibiotics. It all sounds like a steaming pile of bullshit to me. But I wouldn't know better. So tell me, Doctor, is this the sort of strategy we should be pursuing? Do we even have the capabilities to pursue this cure?" Mr. Vesalius inquired. Vesalius was the chairman of Anglo-American.

Judas Camizu replied, "It has been established beyond a doubt that this plague is caused by a newly discovered strain of bacterium, which, as the discoverer, I have tentatively named Pylobacter judascamizu." The others snickered and Camizu continued: "Since we are dealing with a bacterium, the antibiotic strategy is most likely to yield results, although currently the plague microbe is resistant to all antibiotics available to mankind. Development of a new antibiotic regimen may take years if not decades."

"Well, that's rather useless," said Vesalius. "If this is going to take so damn long, I'd rather not invest any money in it. Let some other dupe lose a hundred billion dollars battling this windmill bug, while we make a fortune building the coffins for all the plague-ridden corpses."

Mr. Wren, CEO of Karna Veta Corp, said, "Coffins are better business anyways. They're always in demand. Cures, on the other hand, become obsolete once everybody is cured."

"Ah, but the immense strategic value of controlling the source of the cure can not be overstated," Camizu said.

"What is your plan then? How can we attain the cure in the shortest amount of time and least amount of money? Didn't you say this is going to take years and decades?" asked William Scott, CEO of oZ Corp.

"Oh, we may take the necessary steps to maximize the chance that the whole process takes years and not decades, " said Camizu. "The problem hampering our research is that we simply don't know where to start. There is simply not enough data about possible successful immune responses to the bacterium. Therefore, I have devised a .... 'radical' research strategy. We must infect a large population: hundreds of millions of people or more. Then we will let them die off, per the natural way of things. But! - there will be a few survivors, a few lucky ones for whom Nature has found a way. Whether these lucky survivors have developed antibodies in their bloodstream or have non-compatible cell receptors allowing them to survive the disease - Nature always finds a way. We can then harvest these individuals and obtain data from their blood and their bodies. Such data will prove invaluable for understanding the nature of this disease's interactions with the body, and give us insight into how it may be cured."

"Where will we find these hundreds of millions of poor bastards to infect in the name of science??" asked Vesalius.

"We can unleash it in central Africa, where anarchy is still rampant and there is no central authority. Therefore, as the people start dying, no established government will be provoked," replied Camizu. "I have already arranged for vast numbers of rats to be infected with this disease; when we release these rats into central Africa, at a convenient location, it will spread to humans. We will establish several bases throughout the river basins of Sub-Saharan Africa, where our researchers can monitor our little epidemic, and seize any potentially valuable data specimens."

"How much will this cost?" asked Wren.

"I would estimate anything up to $1 trillion. That is a rather conservative estimate, given the vastness of this operation. But as I already said, the potential rewards, should we be successful, are not merely financial."

"A wondrous plan, Doctor. But you do know, if we carry out this plan as you have described, we will verifiably be the greatest sinners and evildoers in the history of mankind," said Vesalius.

Camizu smiled cryptically but did not respond.

Vesalius then said, "Well, it is done then. Let us bring the plague to Africa!"
