Conclusions of Trial of Anton Proust

Anton Proust was a detested man everywhere he went to. But he didn't know what he was going to face today in his last court appearance. He had carefully combed his hair, worn a shining tuxedo suit, and had a glimpse of hope on his face. He, nonetheless, did know nothing of what was going to be his final judgement for the crimes he committed, against the orders of the Great New French government of the time, as administrator of Durick Veta.

Judge Thierry Albert walked into the Court, smiled conspicuously at Proust, and then sat down on his presiding chair. He began his speech with these words:

"And today, you, Anton Proust, shall be judged, in accordance with our laws as spelled out in our Constitution, for the crimes you committed against the noble Durick Vetan people".

Then it all began...

After 3.5 hours of intense talks, tense moments between the defense of Anton Proust, composed of 3 eminent lawyers, and the accusing side, composed of families of the victims from Durick Veta, Judge Albert finally gave Proust his sentence:

"Anton Proust, in accordance with our laws, with our noble and sacred Constitution, you have been guilty of crimes against humanity committed during your Administration of Durick Veta. You will thus face capital punishment in the next 30 years, in accordance with our Constitution".

Proust, after hearing the judgement, could not believe it, capital punishment! He thought of himself as being a firm patriot, believer in the great values that make the Empire of Great New France such a great nation. He acquiesced Judge Albert with those words:

"Judge Albert, you have condemned our most cherished values by condemning me! You have betrayed our most important values, you are a traitor to this nation! Go to hell and your bloody court!!!"

Then the guards approached Proust and forcefully took him out of the Court as the sentence had finally been struck against one of the figures that had most polarized Great New French society: Some saw him as a bloody criminal, who put shame into the institutions of Great New France and only thought of his own personal interests, others regarded him as a true patriot who stood up to what they regarded as Kasnyian and Durick Vetan arrogance against Great New France.

Prime Minister Florent Andrzejewsky, upon hearing the conclusions of the trial of Anton Proust, immediately reacted with those words:

"It is a great day for justice for millions of Durick Vetans who suffered in the hands of him, but a sad day for our democracy and justice system. Indeed, it has violated the vote of our Parliament of yesterday which has officially abolished capital punishment. Thus, under decree from the Keeper of Seals, I officially declare this sentence null and void, and urge it to be changed to a life sentence, in accordance with our Constitution".

Judge Albert, who didn't have a TV at home, and was totally unaware of indeed yesterday's vote regarding the abolition of the death penalty, reacted mildly to a few journalists:

"Oh well, I can't be everywhere and know everything, can I? Then, it shall be life sentence for Anton Proust, and so be it".

Thus, Proust was going to face the remaining days of his life in a small, cold and faceless cell...

The decision of the High Appeal Court of Nouvelle-Paris had been earlier given: he shall be staying in the State prison of Labrador, and spend his life sentence there.

"The Eleytherian States is pleased by this ruling, justice has been served. We send our congratulations to the Vetan people for their victory over Anton Proust, we also send our congratulations to Great New France for serving the proper justice upon a madman, and we finally send congratulations to Kasnyia for their part in bringing this tyrant to justice."

Foreign Relations Spokesman Richard Aldersman

"Praise be to God! Justice has finally been done! May that cruel, evil man rot in his cell, and may his soul burn in hell."

"So the bastard is finally serving his time, pity the French don't have the balls to just kill him, but a slow rotting in a cell is all the better for such crimes he committed."

OOC: Damn it, I thought we'd have a real trial, with a defense, a prosecution, everything. Like Sejanus Custius! Damn it!

IC: Durick Veta officially contests this decision. We demand that he be transported to Veta for civil suits. We will than send him back to France.

OOC- In case you don't get Q's point GNF, it's that Proust, while a French citizen, is OOC a character that I created for the purpose that he has since served. Now I want him for another purpose..that as the first inmate to Sao Tome Prison.
