Agreed. Also, because this is a military tribunal, there are five judges, led by the Supreme Arbiter Hugo Kessmann. No jury. |

Our Government would like to send a team of 5 judges from our Supreme Court to oversee the trial of Anton Proust going in Kasnyia. We hope to hear a favourable response from our Kasnyian friends. Roger Rouhana, Keeper of the Seals, Minister of Justice of the Empire of Great New France |

Finally, the judges, led by Supreme Arbiter Hugo Kessmann, entered the courtroom. Their faces were non-descript, their behavior purely military presicion. Though they were judges, they were also officers, and acted as such before this rather large military tribunal. Immediately, the bailiff called the court to rise. The judges then stood before their chairs. Supreme Arbiter Kessmann- Be seated. And with that, everyone took their seats. OOC- Gonna need help in rnning a military tribunal here... |

Five minutes passed, Anton Proust pleaded not guilty, and the Judges asked the prosecution to make its opening statement. Charles Hubert stood up and cleared his throat. “Good morning, your honors. I am Attorney Charles Hubert and I am here to see justice done. This man, Anton Proust, stands accused of genocide, murder, illegal possession of chemical weapons, and illegal seizure of power against the Empire of Kasynia and the New Republic of the Quebec-Montreal Corridor, now known as Durick Veta. “It is clear that Anton Proust has committed these crimes. Anton Proust was appointed illegally by the socialist movement in Great New France. Do not let the defense fool you into thinking that Proust’s actions were legal as he was the leader of Occupied Veta: he was not, the Emperor of Kasynia was. I ask that you review the facts of this case, and see what is in plain sight: that Anton Proust is guilty of these crimes he is accused of." |

After Justice Pierre-François de la Cour heard the statement of Attorney Charles Hubert, he couldn't stay silent and thus said the following: "Greetings to all of you from Great New France! My name is Pierre-François de la Cour, and I'm the First Justice from the Supreme Court of the Empire of Great New France, based in Nouvelle-Paris. I will do my utmost to defend vigorously and with passion Anton Proust, and to attack the unfounded accusations that he did so-called "war crimes" during his administration of Occupied Durick Veta. Anton Proust is a man of peace, courage and determination. Attacking him is in a way, a certain insult to the ordinary people of our nation, and for us, it is not only a case to defend him from baseless accusations, but also to defend our nation from the slander it is being the victim of by nations across the world. I would also like to say that I condemn my current government for his treatment of Anton Proust, which is further denial of our most cherished principles of patriotism, heroism in war and difficulty, and determination. The Socialist government of Florent Andrzjewsky has in a certain way "sold" our nation to these powerful conglomerates, powerful nations such as the Empire of Kasnyia that never cease to insult or slander the good people of our nation. We also condemn the way this trial has been done, which is effectively judging a foreign national: we will continue, make no mistake, to defend ceaselessly Mr. Proust against those that attack his leadership, that is all I have to say for now, thank you all". |

OOC- Waaait a minute. You're having a member of your government defend him even after they themselves found him guilty? And Q, the man you are speaking of is Justice Minister Ferdinand Haagen IC- Supreme Arbiter Kessmann- Mr. de la Cour. You are within a Kasnyian military court. As such, you WILL exert discipline in your behavior. Slander this court again and I shall hold you in contempt. You were to make an opening statement defending your client, nothing more. Kessmann then shuffled his papers. Supreme Arbiter Kessmann- Councilor, if you would call our first witness... |

“I call Field Marshal of the Kasynian Armed Forces, Ruprecht Danz to the stand, your honors,” Charles Hubert said. The Field Marshal walked to the stand and was sworn in. Charles began his questioning. “Mr. Danz, is it correct that you are a Field Marshal?” “Yes, I held the rank of Field Marshal.” “Did you fight in the United States of North America-Kasnyian war?” “Yes, I did.” “And after the defeat of Durick Veta and the subsequent occupation, where you the Commanding Officer of the Kasnyian military base in Toronto?” “That is correct, yes. I was the CO of the base in Toronto.” “During your time as CO of said military base, who was the President of the Quebec-Montreal Corridor?” “That would be Thomas Nickolas Bird, General of the Vetan National Liberty Association.” “And was Thomas Nickolas Bird recognized as President of the Quebec-Montreal Corridor by Kasnyia?” “Yes, he was.” “Than, would I be correct in assuming that he would have had diplomatic immunity in Occupied Veta?” “I believe he would.” “Where were you on the day of the death of Thomas Bird?” “I was in the Toronto Base.” “Could you please tell the court what happened that day before Thomas Bird’s death?” “In the base?” “Yes, Field Marshal.” “Well…it was a slow day. I was reading through a few reports on the situation in Eleytheria-Duo. At I believe 1:30 PM, I was told by a subordinate that Mr. Bird was being chased by French police while attempting to reach the Toronto base. I was unsure of what to do at first. At 2:00 PM, French forces began trying to barricade all the entrances to our base. Five minutes later, I saw an armored car ram the barricade. Emerging from it were Mr. Bird and a few guards-I’m not sure of the number of them, because of the chaos of the event. You see, French soldiers were firing rapidly at Bird and his men, and Bird’s guards were returning fire with AK-47s. Bird ran up to one of the guard’s of the Toronto base as I exited said base. The guard attempted to stop the shootout, but as I approached a French soldier fired upon Bird. The bullet hit him in the back. The French soldier took aim for his head, but I stopped him before he could fire. Bird than revealed the crimes that had been occurring under Proust. He than died. The bullet had hit his left lung.” “Do you remember Bird’s exact words?” “Yes, I do. You see, I wrote down what he said. He slurred a bit because of his pain from his wound. He said, and I quote: ‘These Frenchies…they’ve been starving and slaughtering my people-they socialist were harassing the capitalists, and then when the Emperor came to power, they’ve been harassing the non-capitalists. They shot some Jews shouting ‘Christ Killers!’ I saw it with my own eyes! Send-send out an observation team now! Please! Don’t let my death be in vain.’ He than died.” “Did you send out an observation team?” “Yes, I did.” “And what were their findings?” “That Mr. Bird had been truthful. The conditions of the Vetan people were horrid. French soldiers were harassing and assaulting people. People were being executed for the pettiest of crimes, which was illegal as France did not have the right to try individuals in the occupational zone.” “And this was happening without your knowledge before Thomas Bird’s death?” “Yes, it was.” “Can you tell the court what happened to the French soldier who shot President Bird?” “He was arrested by my men and interrogated.” “What did he reveal?” “That Bird had been illegally placed under the Kasnyian equivalent of an Order of Execution by Field Marshal Anton Proust of the French Occupational Forces. He also revealed that Proust had ordered the illegal execution of several other civilians in the Occupied territories for the “crime” of speaking out against the French government, socialist movement, or Catholic faith. Once we received the reports from the Observation Team, he attempted to escape the Toronto base, resulting in him being shot.” “Did you contact the Kasnyian Government about this incident?” “Yes. I contacted the Viceroy of Pacifica. He was unsympathetic and did not particularly care about this incident. I than contacted Field Marshal Poole and told him of the events. He in turn contacted the Emperor.” “What did the Emperor do about this news?” “He publicly order the French out of Occupied Veta and had decided to give the Vetan independence once they signed a treaty of non-aggression. He ordered the evacuation of the Toronto military base.” “No further questions. Your Honors, may I present the transcript of the televised conversation between the Emperor of Kasynia and Anton Proust, in which the Emperor ordered the French out of Veta?” |
