Vorendia

The Story

Once upon a time, there was a world far away that was not too dissimilar to our own. In it lived a great number of people of many different races. Their world was rich with resources, but they often fought battles to conquer each other's lands. Over time, they began spreading out and expanding into new lands, forming great empires. Massive wars were waged, kingdoms rose and fell. This strange world was called Vorendia.

The Game

This is a Fantasy RP that anyone can join provided they will play it and follow the rules. It does not depend on your NationStates nation, however it may have many similarities. There are five different races that players can choose from, and these three races will be decided by the players at the beginning of the game. (think humans, elves, and orcs, just for an example) From there, players will choose one origin, or starting point for each of the races. These origins will be where the players will start from in the first phase, and in the other phases it may act as a sort of holy city or place of great historical importance or something, depending on how the game is played. (think of them as "cradles of civilization") The entire game will be very open to change and mainly player made.

There are four different main phases to the game. In each phase, the players will have to do something different. Explore, Build, Conquer, and Live. Each of them are explained below.

The Phases

1. Explore

The players will play the role of explorers who will search out the land, fend off wild animals, and discover the secrets of the world of Varendia in the name of their race. In this phase, players will decide what the terrain will be and where natural resources will be located.

2. Build

The players will play the role of tribal chiefs or similar positions as they attempt to band the tribes together into nations. In this phase, players will stake out their plots of land and begin interacting, whether competitively or cooperatively.

3. Conquer

The players will be in control of their nation as it strives to dominate the world with military might, economic power, or diplomacy. In this phase, players will be able to take full advantage of the resources in their land and will have to compete or cooperate with one another extensively to conquer the world. This phase is the most like NationStates and will probably be the longest.

4. Live

The players will be in control of a single individual as they go about their daily lives in the world. This last phase is loosely defined but will be heavily dependent on the outcome of the other phases to determine the way this one is played.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

You can start posting questions and comments as soon as you want and we can begin designing the races and deciding origins immediately. But remember that eventually the thread will be heavily edited to make sure that it stays clean and non vital and OOC posts will be compressed and/or deleted to save space once they have served their purpose. In the end, this thread will look like a cohesive story that one could read straight through without any confusing OOC banter.

Ultimately, this is about having fun and cooperating to make a good story, so make that your number one goal at all times in whatever you do in here.

The Races

Valdaermen

A tall and strong people, the Valdaermen are seen as bold and tough warriors. Adult men grow to an average height of 7' (2.1 m) while women tend to be slightly shorter. Men are often hairy, and have long hair and beards, while women's bodies tend to be naturally hairless and the hair on their heads grows shorter as well. They have an average life span of 70 years.

Not very social creatures in habit, they are rugged individualists and prefer solitude or quiet communion with small groups rather than large social gatherings. They are a sea-faring people and share a love for the open sea more than anything else. Their spoken language is relatively deep and slow.

They developed seaworthy ships early in their history and immediately began sailing across the world. As such, they have some of the best cartography and sea charts of all the races. Their weaponry is usually large, heavy and needs massive amounts of force to wield. They rely on brute strength and unrelenting forward advancement to win their battles.

Florans

A wise and patient people, the Florans are treelike in appearance and unlike the other races, actually evolved both sentience and sapience from plants instead of animals. Though they can pick up their roots and "walk," they usually spend their time with their roots firmly planted in the earth. They create most of their food through photosynthesis but must still supplement their diets with protein occasionally. They range in height from anywhere from 3' (1 m) when they are first cut away as buds, to 8' (2.5 m) when they are extremely old. They have an average life span of 150 years.

Very social creatures, they are almost never far from one another. They communicate solely by touch, being able to transfer messages through cell contact, and when large groups are interlinked they almost lose their individuality completely as they merge into a single hive mind.

They had little need to advance scientifically as their bodies are resilient to weather and the elements and naturally provide almost everything they need. However, they did develop a sort of natural movement technology, in which they lift their roots out of the earth completely and wrap them around and through wooden wheels, usually made from non-sentient trees. In doing this and moving their branches to catch the wind, they can pick up speed and move several dozen times faster than just walking. They tend to use planned strategies and traps when fighting.

Zugwai

A strange and mysterious people, the Zugwai are pale, have leathery, hairless skin, and have no discernable ears or nose. They have big, black eyes and large foreheads. Typically around 3' (1 m) to 4' (1.2 m) in height, they are short and very thin with relatively oversized heads. Little is known about their reproductive system, and even less about their childhood. It is estimated that they have a natural life span of between 50 and 100 years.

They are very isolationist and almost nothing is known about their societal structure or social habits. Preferring to live away from other races, they have developed a unique and secretive culture. They seem to speak very little and yet still know what one another are thinking, prompting many to believe that they may communicate telepathically to some extent.

Their technological advancements are largely unknown, but they seem to be vastly different from that of other races. For example, they have a form of lighting similar to modern electrical bulbs, and yet have not developed agriculture and still live in relatively primitive housing. They prefer pacifism, but when they are forced to fight, they are known to be fierce and agile warriors.

OOC: So long as the races don't include "orcs" and elves" then count me in. I don't mind humans. I don't mind a races like orcs and elves... but really... we need to use some of our own imagination here...

Any. Even ripping off H.G. or going with Angels and Demons would be less corny than elves and orcs.

New Ones get's my vote though.

Of course. That was only an example. What would be really cool would be if someone of the more artistic of us could actually draw examples of whatever races we make up. But I guess first we need to design them.

By the way, until otherwise stated, (like, until we actually start), everything in here is OOC.

Nope... well, not that I know of. I've never played DnD. But I might have read it somewhere and it got stuck to my subconscious mind. But, no, I did not consciously steal it from a source book.

I like the idea of having some sort of brutal, ogreish, disgusting race as one of them. Maybe an industrious, reclusive, mysterious race as another. And a third I'm not so sure about, keep the ideas coming.

And btw, thanks to everyone who said that they're interested. ^_^

The second one is quite similar to the nation I am thinking of, but I'd like them to be humans lol. It will factor into a specific part of the roleplay.

Hmmm... Maybe a race quite similar to humans, perhaps more dwarflike though, but not necessarily in stature... I'm not quite sure what I'm trying to say...

Got a link or pics or description or something for those of us who are less familiar with it than you are?

Hmmm... short green men. No more details than that? Or should we just start with them and build a race from them as a rough guideline?

EDIT: By the way, I googled "vorendia" and nothing came up. Must of just been my own imagination. :D

Hmmm... personally, I don't really think it would be a good choice for a race... but I'm not too picky about it. We can put it to a vote or something. Let's keep rolling out the ideas first though.

Brainstorm:

Furry, humanoid, rabbit beings. Big Long ears. Developed sense of hearing. Live in underground burrows initially. Herbivorous. Highly industrious, build lots of crazy cool towers out of the dirt, and tons of underground caves and whatnot. I've been playing that winter bells game just a little too much... but still, oh, and also, slightly shorter than humans. Fairly reclusive, preferring to hide in caves. Did I mention they were furry? Long ears!! Name?

Jet black skinned, lizardlike people. Shiny black skin, slimy or wet, have tusks? horns? spikes? some sort of strange protusion? Live in wetlands? Trees? Jungles? Good with wooden weaponry? martial arts? Stealthy? Developed sense of smell with tongues like snakes? Kind of like humanoid salamanders? Name?

Slightly larger than normal human sized people. kind of like giants, but smaller? Good at seafaring. Physically strong. Muscular. Tough. Kind of like vikings. Good with metal? Better sight than other races, but not as "feely" as others. Tough, did I mention that? Umm... I dunno... Name?

Just some ideas. Critique the hell out of them.

EDIT: Also, could an admin or someone give me mod powers for just this thread if possible, if not, then the alternative universes forum, so I can eventually be able to edit all the posts in this thread?

Hmm, Pookahs, Pikians, Leporids, Lagomorphs, Comeys, Gomphisians (my favorite, a giant pre-historic rabbit)

Mungs. I just like that.

I'm interested, don't have time at the moment but since this is still OOC I not worried. I really don't have a "race" in mind as much as I have a culture. Unless they just simply do not fight I think I'll bring back the Ganosians for this (obviously a bit different from the ones we've seen on here before).

People from the islands who speak an odd language and trade. They look humaniod with no facial hair, nose, or discernable ears. They have pale, pale skin and are a bit of a mystery to the rest of Vorendia. They're basically our version of the Chinese.
